Calix’s POV.

Mate!

The world around me stood at a standstill as I watched her from atop the cliff, under the blazing afternoon sun.

A butterfly fluttered in her face and she brought forward her hand and it perched on her. The innocence when she smiled and talked to the little creature tugged my heart with warmth. She is kind and beautiful.

More than anything, I wanted to stay back and watch her. I could watch her all day and not get tired, but not today. I am on a mission. I am out for the head of my enemy and nothing is going to hold me back.

So with one last glance at my mate, I reined my horse in the other direction as I prepared for the descent down the cliff, only to hear my mate scream. It is with shock that I flung around and searched for her and she was no more on the bridge.

Where did she go?

Adrenaline coursed through my veins as I scanned the perimeter for her and I noticed a grapple in the rive

Calix’s POV. Just like last night, they climbed down from the bed and seductively walked to me. I’d forgotten they were here– perhaps, didn't expect them to still be here after last night’s escapade. This morning after Mr. Westley relayed to me the news of Alpha Thane’s voyage to Cathena, I’d ordered for my horse and cloak right there in the courtyard and hadn't bothered re-entering the castle. Amidst the protests of my cousin and beta, had mounted my horse and set for Cathena. According to Leia, going after Alpha Thane is a bad idea while Han on the other hand, wanted to come with me. In all, my mind was made up. I was going after Alpha Thane and I was going alone. I was already looking forward to his head in my hands, not knowing of the perfect distraction the moon goddess’d planted for me out there on the cliff– the sight of my mate. Was it fate that she’d suddenly fallen into water? I could still see those blue eyes and how they stared into my soul,

Emily’s POV. Something cold and wet landed all over my body. “Wake up!! Who said you can oversleep here?!” the clatter of two metals that followed keyed me into further panic. I jolted awake, rolled on the small bed and fell with a thud on the floor. A small cry left my lips, but I quickly recollected myself off the floor and staggered. My gaze settled on the scowling face of my host as she continued to clatter the metals to my face and then stopped. “That will be the last time I wake you up, Emily Blakesley. Here, we rise before the sun even hints at the horizon. Am I clear? Have I made myself clear?!” she barked. “Y-yes, ma’am,” I stammered. “Good.” She turned and gave the metals to someone else in the room. For the first time, I noticed two women with us in the room, one was holding a bucket which dangled in her hand perhaps to emphasize on what she’d just done. “Strip.” My host ordered. Without even blinking, I peeled the wet dress off my body and stood, naked,

Emily’s POV. My eyes fluttered open. I jerked to a sitting as my gaze settled on the chubby figure of Madame Severine. “How are you feeling?” she asked, shuffling further into the room. “I am feeling better,” I lied. With those hawkish eyes, she scrutinized me. A smile touched her lips but it quickly morphed into a frown. “Is it true, that you refused to eat?” she questioned, her voice dripped with derision. “I-I’m not hungry,” I stuttered and avoided her gaze. She scoffed and stepped away. “Suit yourself. Remember to wake up early tomorrow, early to bed early to rise.” She stopped and glanced at me, and then climbed into her bed. It was a matter of time and her snores filled the room. Gently, I laid down on my bed and dragged my gaze across the open window, as the sky darkened into full-blown nighttime. A howl broke out in the air– Randolph and the men patroll

Emily’s POV. The world around me twirled to a stop as I stared into those pools of brown eyes. My heart began to thump so hard I was sure it might just explode from the frenzy. He was here! He was wearing a dark-blue tunic underneath a black cloak and his hair tousled in the breeze. Slowly, he stepped away from the trees and walked past me. I flung around and watched him strode toward the river. He stopped, and clasped his hands behind his back. Grabbing my dress, I joined him and together we stared at the river– at the waves as they rolled on. That undeniable pull was there again, the desire to throw myself into his arms. I tilted my head to steal a look at his face and he tilted his head and caught me. I blushed terribly and brought back my gaze to the water before me. “It was you, right? The stranger who saved me from drowning the other day?” I spoke to him for the first time, and glanced at him. He wouldn’t spare me another glance bu

Calix’s POV. The plan was simple— to invade the hamlet, eliminate as many of Alpha Thane’s men as possible, kidnap the princess, and be gone within the blink of eye. It was that simple but as I emerged from the forest and stared into her beautiful blue eyes, I almost canceled that plan. That brings me back to yesterday evening. I watched as my beta and the men trained in the tiltyard from the rooftop. Footsteps echoed behind me and it was Leia. “Hey.” She smiled as strolled to meet me behind the parapet. “Hello.” I replied and glanced at her, she was wearing a purple satin dress and a white muffler. Exhaling, I brought back my gaze to the men below. “So, you’re still going on with the invasion plan?” “Look, Leia!” I cut her off. “I do not want to listen to any of your pity stories or anything about forgiveness.” I growled, glaring at her. “I’m sorry,” she whispered. “So what are you going to do

Calix’s POV. I plummeted into the water and missed a large rock by an inch. Expelling rings of bubbles, I searched the deep and saw her drifting away unconsciously toward the bottom. A few anxious strokes, I got to her, and realized she was bleeding from her head. Cursing under my breath, I propelled us to the top and broke out from the water. Taking a deep breath, I saw my men running down the cliff all shifted into their lycan forms and I glanced at the woman in my arms; I lifted her from the water and howled. I swam to the shore and tried to perform some resuscitation on her like I did the last time under the probing gaze of my men, but none of that seemed to work. My thoughts were all jumbled up even as I collected my cloak from Han, shredded out a part and used it as a bandage around her head. “My lord?.. My lord?” Han interrupted via the mind-link. “We need to get her to a physician in Tyr before it's too late.” He was right. I guess he figured out how much I wasn't

Leia’s POV. “...I won’t let history repeat itself. You’re not coming with us!” Calix’s words cut through my heart like a two-edged sword. I watched him take the men with him, and they left for the hamlet of Cathena, leaving me behind. Crying has never been my thing, but as soon as they left, I hurried to my room, screamed my heart out and lashed out on a few furniture. And then panting, I realized I can actually take up matters in my hands. My cousin, Calix, had instructed the few men left behind to keep an eye on me– but it is I who had my eyes on them few minutes later as I sneaked out of my room and tiptoed toward the underground of the castle. Unlike Calix who was only five years old when this castle and Tyr were attacked by Alpha Thane’s men and we were relocated to Nirian, I was ten years old. I know this castle better than him and the lycans he has assigned to keep watch over me. Panting, I glanced at the long passage at the two

Leia’s POV. Ripping out a large chunk of my cloak, I darted to the river and soaked it in the water. I ran back to him, dropped to my knees beside him and with trembling hands pressed the clothe against the gash on his chest. A raspy groan escaped his lips. His eyes fluttered open, those pools of liquid brown– they locked on mine and then they fluttered and he closed them again. I ran back to the river, washed the clothe and headed back to the forest. This time around, I cleaned up the wound on his shoulder but the wound which was obviously a bite wouldn’t stop bleeding. I applied pressure just as my searching eyes found some marigold plants. I hurried to them, plucked some and began to chew them and applied the poultice on his wounds, holding them up with strips of cloth from my cloak. And then my gaze fell on his member. Good grief! I didn't realize he was naked until now. I peeled off my cloak and covered him up. His skin was burning, and yet he shivered beneath my touch.

Emily’s POV. As soon as he left, servants scurried into the room and cleaned up the mess of the broken bottle—they took away the wine glasses, table, and chairs, and I was left alone again. My legs buckled and I dropped to the floor with a soft thud, my gown forming a loop around me. At last, the tears found their way, pouring like soap from my eyes and soaking my clothes; the more I wiped them, the more they came in torrents. A howl filled the air. Sniffling, I gazed up at the night sky, recognizing who it was. There was so much sadness laced in that cry, that broke my heart. Another howl broke into the air and I jerked to my feet. I scurried to the window and gazed at the courtyard below, hoping to get a glimpse of his lycanthrope, but all I was met with was foreboding darkness. He was gone and headed off to goddess knows where. An ache pushing my heart, I plummeted to the floor again and rested my head on the ledge of the window. He has been gone only for an hour yet, I mi

Calix’s POV. She didn't believe me. No matter how hard I tried to explain things to her, she refused to believe me. The weight of her accusation crashed through me, twisting into waves of fury. I strode out of the room and pranced down the hallways of the castle, my hands clenched into fists as I battled to keep myself from shifting. Not here...I told myself, the sight of me was already terrifying enough to the servants who scurried away into hiding as I approached. I need not terrify them with the presence of my lycanthrope. As for my beta, Han, luckily for me, he’s retired for the day, so there was no one to bombard me with questions about why my dinner suddenly ended. Arriving at a corner, my mate’s voice resounded in my head. “Stop lying!” I slammed my fist into the wall, the force rattling the stone and spraying specks of dust onto the floor and my shoes. Why does she think I’m lying? Do I come off to her as a lowlife who would try to manipulate her with falsehoods?

Emily’s POV. Adrenaline shot through every nerve in my body. I stared at the door, wondering who it was this time around, holding onto whatever that was left of my sanity. The tall portal swung open and absolutely no one but my mate strode into the room. A sigh of relief escaped my lips. It's fascinating that someone who brought chaos of my life was capable of bringing me so much peace and comfort. Just a single gaze at him, I melted with warmth for him and a soothing calm washed over me. My heart accelerating on its own volition, I watched him linger at the door as though held in a trance at the sight birthed before him– at the sight of me. “You look gorgeous, angelic, breathtaking,” he said. All three words just to describe me? I blushed terribly and fought to hold his gaze. A tomato couldn't compete with how red I became. “Thank you,” I said and lowered my gaze to my dampened fingers. He strode to me and brought forward his hand. “Would you give

Calix’s POV. I sipped from my glass and continued staring across the open window of the castle’s living room. I tried not to think about her words this evening– the fact she tried to remind me about her rejection in the forest of Cathena. I understood she rejected me then so she can escape, she didn't mean any of those words. I can tell by whenever I held her in my arms—how her heart beat fast and her breath hitch. She longs for me as much as I longed for her. “A few days ago, more than anything you wanted nothing to do with her,” Han reminded and pulled me out of my thoughts. “What changed?” he asked. “You should ask the moon goddess,” I replied and turned around. My gaze fell on my beta standing in the middle of the room also holding a wine glass in his hand. “I have never seen you this happy, my lord,” he hinted. Shrugging, I gulped a mouthful of my drink. “Isn’t that what our mate is for? To complete and make us happy,” I said.

  • Haunted by the Mysterious Alpha   CHAPTER 23

Emily’s POV. Reopening my eyes, I flung myself around and my gaze fell on him standing behind me. My cheeks flushed with embarrassment as I realized I’d been caught sniffing his clothes. “N-no, you’re not,” I stuttered, suddenly unable to hold his gaze. It wasn’t until I looked up and into his eyes that I found them darkened with something primal–something I dared not to say. The room charged with something unruly and sizzling, as he crossed over to me and stopped. “Are you sure?” he asked, even his voice was now husky. I swallowed and nodded. Holding his gaze burned me with the desire to throw myself into his arms and crush his lips with mine; those full succulent lips. I could only imagine what it’d feel like to have them move over mine, to have them trail wet kisses down my neck. Damn it! Wetness pooled more and more in my underwear. “Yes,” I answered when I finally found my voice and looked away. “You know, if there’s anything you need, you can as well tell me.” “

  • Haunted by the Mysterious Alpha   CHAPTER 22

Emily’s POV. It all started when he ended the kiss, strode out of the room, and shut the door behind him. My knees buckled, and I sank to the floor. Fresh tears filled my eyes as it dawned on me—I would never be accepted. Nobody seemed to care about how I felt; how their words cut into me, or how their actions sent me into a spiral of despair. Sobbing quietly, I wrapped my arms around myself, trying to hold myself together but his scent lingered in the air, a cruel reminder of the mate bond that should have been my solace but instead, has become my torment. Is that why he haunted me in my dreams? And stabbed my wolf? “Do you think I have not heard the rumors about your mentally unstable self! Who do you think would be stupid enough to want a wolfless girl for a mate?!” his words at the riverbank echoed in my head. Regardless, I stared at the door, half-expecting him to come back and tell me he’d made a mistake, to hold me, and erase all the pain he’d inflicted on me. But he n

  • Haunted by the Mysterious Alpha   CHAPTER 21

Calix’s POV. A mixture of shock and fear ballooned inside me as I took in the broken earthenwares, the flipped-over mattresses, and the torn bedsheets scattered about the place. My gaze traveled over the droplets of blood on the floor, and the incoherent writings on the wall. But none of these bothered me as the sight of my mate hurdled in a corner laughing at herself, her hair was disheveled, and her hands streaked with blood and grime as she clutched a knife. “By the stars and shadows! Somebody stop her!” Mr. Westley clamored. My lungs struggled for air, my heart pounding in uneven, frantic beats as Han and the guards behind me scooted forward and soon, were upon her. They wrestled with her, wrung the knife from her hands, and pinned her to the floor. “Quick! Get some chains and keep her restrained before she harms someone!” Mr. Westley clamored again. Words failed me. I watched as Han hurried out of the room and my gaze was back on my mate– this wasn’t the girl I kissed so

  • Haunted by the Mysterious Alpha   CHAPTER 20

Calix’s POV. The desire to rip off my clothes and shift into my lycanthrope rippled through me as I strode out of the sick bay and shut the door after me. Gnashing my teeth, I leaned on the door and growled. I can’t believe I just kissed my enemy’s daughter, the one person I’d vowed to destroy. Dragging a breath, I signaled at the guards stationed at the door and while they locked it, I strode out of the hallway, hurried down the stairs, and soon hit the foyer. Proceeding to the terrace, I took a deep breath wishing I could flush out the intoxicating scent of her which seemed to follow me wherever I went. Sulking under my breath, I proceeded to the royal garden, to one of the white wooden benches, and sat. Fvck! How did I get to this point? All I wanted was to come back to Tyr, spend some time with my people, take revenge on the alpha who destroyed my home, and then go back to Nirian. Never did I see this coming, that I’d end up desiring; not in the littlest bit; the daug

  • Haunted by the Mysterious Alpha   CHAPTER 19

Emily’s POV. In an endless, boundless, thick veil of darkness, I soared. Time didn't exist here, everything stood at a standstill. I floated, weightless, thoughtless, with no idea of where I was– Am I dead? And then my lashes fluttered open and I welcomed the sharp rays of an afternoon sun. A groan seeped out of my lips. Where am I? What happened to me? My throat was as dry as the desert and my vision was blurry. I shut my eyes again and when I reopened them, the room I was in blurred into focus. High stoned walls, a massive arched window, inset with diamond-shaped panes of leaded glass from which rays of the sunlight oozed, a wooden polished shelf on which stood vases of dried flowers, a mortar and pestle, forceps, scalpel, bone saw, hooks, and needles. There was a side stool just close to the small bed I’d woken in, and there were two other empty beds. The room had the faint scents of beeswax, herbs, and the lingering smoke from the hearth. Slowly, I tried to sit up an
