“I’ve already told you, I don’t want it.”  I growl in frustration at my uncle.

“Gabe, your dad worked really hard to build relationships with the locals, and he would want you to continue his work.” He says.  “Listen, I get that you felt like you had to step away from all of it.  You didn’t have it easy with the crazy shit that happened to your parents but this is your home.  Your rightful place is as Alpha of this pack." my uncle has been trying to keep the pack together hoping that I will take his place as the Alpha.  "Just do me a favor and think about it ok.”

He wasn’t wrong when he said crazy shit happened to my parents.  My dad's death was just the final straw for me though.  It all started with my mother.  My wolf, Theo made his first appearance when I was 13.  I was in the car with my mom driving home from school.  That day was the day my dad, the next in line would officially take over as Alpha of our pack.  There was to be a ceremony, and mom and I were running through my responsibilities for the evening.  I hear a voice in my head tell me to brace myself.

“Brace myself for what mom” I ask.  Puzzled, my mom looked at me and suddenly, a vision came to me.  A little girl about 8 years old, with red hair, falling to the ground.  She turned to face me regaining her balance on one knee.  With her head still down, and her arms holding her abdomen, she raised her head in defiance.  Eyes blue as the sky, I could see rage in them.  The air around her seemed to implode into her, building and inhaling the energy around her until I could see an iridescent haze surrounding her like a halo.

In a fury, she thrusts her hands forward and I feel an invisible force rushing at me, then I feel myself being thrown back like I got in a shoving match with a Mack truck.  The next thing I remember is waking up in the hospital.  My dad told me that my wolf came while my mom and I were driving causing her to veer of the road and into a tree.  My mom died instantly, and I was thrown from the car.  Several members from our pack were following close behind as was the custom for the family of the Alpha to have an entourage.

My uncle was the one that found my wolf laying in the grass near the car.  The injuries that I sustained from being thrown from the car forced the shift back.  I broke three ribs, both arms and cracked my skull.  If I hadn’t shifted than my wolf wouldn’t have been there to heal me.  So, it was a real catch 22, if he hadn’t come the accident might not have happened at all.  Yet, he was the only reason I survived.

My mother was human.  My dad loved her, passionately.  Who wouldn’t?   The woman was a saint.  The love that they shared was different than what is expected of pack members.  He rejected his mate; it was a huge controversy.  My dad’s choice taught me that at the end of the day, we have a choice.  Not everyone is blessed to have a soulmate, that perfect person chosen for them by some eternal being.  Hell, some people have soulmates that are just terrible people.

My dad never recovered from her loss, when she died, all pack political ambitions died with her.  His dad never forgave him for giving up his place as Alpha.  Because I was so young, my dad made me swear that I wouldn’t show my wolf until I was of age.  Typically, a wolf doesn’t appear until 18, but it has happened earlier in some cases.  He feared that because of the circumstances surrounding the appearance of mine, the loss of my mom, my dad stepping down, he told me that he feared that I would be killed.  With my mother being human, a lot of folks figured that I wouldn’t have a wolf at all, so it hasn’t been that difficult to keep Theo a secret.

I was 16 when they found my dad slumped against the tree that my mom had crashed into years before.  No one has ever told me the details surrounding his death, according to the local sheriff’s office it is still under investigation.  My grandfather told me it was suicide.  I think that my grandfather had something to do with it.

“I’m not going to change my mind, I’m not interested.”  I respond.

Situated on the remote end of a plot of land belonging to the pack for more than a century sits a large three-story contemporary mansion. The pack house is modern, and has all the bells and whistles, conference rooms, office space, 17 bedrooms, 8 bathrooms, a fancy security system, full kitchen, the works.West of the house is a path that leads to the previous pack house. Its older, and doesn’t have a complete gym for training, but it does have running water and electricity. It was my home, the only place I ever knew, and it’s where my mother is still present. Everything in this house belonged to her. A three-bedroom farmhouse with a wrap around porch. My mom loved the country style of decor, and its functionality. She made everyone feel at home here,

I quickly get dressed and shove my knife in its sheath tucking it into my boot. I grab my keys and the jar that was left at my door before I walk out of my room, making my way to the lobby. The same young lady is at the desk, and she smiles brightly when she sees me walk in. “Is everything alright with your room?”, she asks. “It’s perfect Melissa” taking time to look at her name tag this time. “I do have a question though. I found this in my room. Maybe whoever was here before me forgot it, and was wondering where I can get some more?” I ask. “Oh, I’m not sure where that jar came from, but I do know where you can get some more. There is a guy out on the market road north of town that keeps bees. He sells it at the local grocery store.” She replies. “You know, it’s kind of a local tradition for a guy to give his sweetheart a jar of honey. Maybe you have a secret admirer.” “Well, that wou

It's a slow night at Sherry's. The last customers left about an hour ago and Joe has been huffing and puffing in the kitchen. He's taking extra care to make as much noise chopping extra prep items for tomorrow. By the smell of it we have enough onions to last the next month. I don’t know what has gotten into him lately, but it seems like he does everything he can to be obnoxious to get Sherry’s attention in an effort to go home. I’ve talked to her about switching him to days, but she says that the daytime cook is a single dad and doesn’t have anybody to watch his kids at night. Joe's usually pretty chipper till about nine o’clock. That’s when he turns into the grouch, we all know and love. The one that takes his time picking the strongest smelling onions to chop up loudly and throw pans in the storage area. Sherry walks out of the office and looks at me with a questioning look. I shrug my shoulders and go back to washing the beer mugs. It’s 11:30 when Sherry asks, “Ya’ll rea

I walk to the door and just as I am about to open it, it swings open and tall slender man steps out. I can feel his disappointment at the realization that I am headed inside. From the looks of it, and the smell of him he is likely the guy that works in the kitchen and is heading out. It doesn’t surprise me when he says, “honey, I hope you’re looking for liquid lunch cuz the kitchens closed.” I put on my warmest smile, he has kind eyes, and I don’t want to keep him from whoever he is trying to get home to. I can feel the devotion and love radiating from him, and I know that he cherishes them. Before I have a chance to reassure him, I step inside the door and freeze. As soon as I see him, I know that Lily was not bullshitting me. He stands up and faces me. He is tall, taller than me, a lot taller than me. I’m six feet tall and he has to be about 6’7”. His long golde

I want her. Badly. I don’t just want a midnight romp though. I never want to have a day that I don’t see her beautiful face. I want to know what it is about her that makes people feel at ease when she is around. The minute she walked in that door everything changed. Not only for me, she is my mate, so that is a given. I suppose part of me knows that there is a tether between us that I won’t be able to resist, but Joe leaving the kitchen when someone has come in. He wouldn’t normally do that. He prides himself of his work ethic. Not a big deal though. We all have our off days, so I didn’t think anything of it. Sherry leaving me to close the bar without her I didn’t see coming, but the real kicker was Frank and Josh. Those two crotchety old bastards don’t care about anything but their lawn, their wallets and closing Sherry’s Bar. For one, they are frequent customers here and they know the price of a beer. They wouldn’t fall for what she pulled with the daytime bar tender L

“It wasn’t your fault, you know that right”, I say to him feeling his sadness, mixed with guilt. I can feel his hurt and I want to take it away. I can, but that would never truly heal him. It would all come rushing back out of nowhere. A memory, something familiar that reminds him of the thing causing him pain will have it all come rushing back with a fury. It would be worse, cruel even. He lowers me back down so that I am standing in front of him.Worried that I stepped over a boundary I look up to him searching his eyes for what I should do. I open a boundary just a little bit to see if I can get a hint of what he is feeling. Maybe I can do some damage control, and salvage this, whatever this is. He raises his hand to the back of his neck and forces a smile. I can tell whatever it is, it’s a sensitive subject. “I’m sorry,” I tell him “That was probably int

Driving around waiting for the pull, I feel around in my head for Lily but she still hasn’t returned with any news. It’s after noon so Gabe has been missing for almost twelve hours. Out of nowhere Lily pops into my head telling me to turn right; now. I slam on my brakes and almost miss the turn. The car behind me honking its horn in protest to my sudden diversion. “Lily, what did you find?” I ask her. “Nada from the guy that snatched him, but lucky for us Gabe knows where he is.” She tells me, explaining that she was able to contact a very pissed off inner wolf.“Ok, where is he?” I ask. “There is an old barn about a mile up on the left. He’s in there” she tells me “But Hannah, I think you should call the deputy, these people are dangerous” she warns me. “How many are there?” I ask her. “Two, but Hannah,

I hear a strangled howl from below the floor under Jeff. Looking at me they both make a move to grab me. Dodging Jeff and snatching the other guy’s wrist I twist him around and shove his face into the grill of the tractor. His head making a sickening thud and he falls to the ground down for the count. That was too easy. I turn to face Jeff and he is on me before I can dodge him again. He tackles me to the floor and lands on top of me. He stinks, like halitosis and mildew. He maneuvers his legs so he is straddling me and grabs my neck with both hands choking me. I use my arms, thrusting them up between his breaking his choke hold on me and knocking him off balance. I am able to jump up before he has time to recover and kick him in the face as hard as I can. Twice. With them both out cold I reach down and remove the laces from my boots, and hog tie them both. The timing of my birth was used as a distraction to overthrow my father, one of the great fae Kings. My mother, father, and three older siblings were murdered by an uncle who coveted my father’s position. If it were not for the actions of a brave young maiden named Charlotte who took me and switched me with a human child who had been still born, I would have also been killed that day. In retrospect, growing up I always knew there was something wrong about the people that I knew as my parents. Curiosity got the best of me when I was a fourteen, sneaking into the file room during one of her many doctors’ visits I wasn’t

When he senses my presence, I see his certainty that I am a threat to his mate. It is evident in his fight to maintain control of his wolf. When I tell him that I don’t intend any harm to his mate I am being sincere. I imagine that he believes that I am taunting him, but I have other things in mind for her. She believes that I am telling the truth and told him such. She is right there are more pressing matters than some basic hunger that her blood ignites in the very nature of a vampire, and I have walked the earth nearly two centuries. I suppose I can’t blame him for his own instinct to protect her. The history of the relationship between our species’ is at best volatile. I watch as she does her best to calm him, and I have to say that I am in awe at her strength. It’s not a physical strength it’s something within her very soul. I will certainly be pooling some resources to find out what I can about her. I

Detective Small, I learned while in Dallas, is nothing short of a psychopath. His partner Detective Ryan was a good person who put trust in him as her partner, and it got her killed. His talent for pinning murders on members of society he deems to be unworthy was horrifying. I approached Detective Ryan with some information and hoped that she would take it seriously.I’m guessing she shared the information I provided her with him, because the next morning I discovered that she had been killed in what seemed to be a tragic accident. I suspected that it was Small that had been corrupt but I wasn’t sure. I knew there must have been something in the information that connected him to the crimes, and Detective Ryan must have figured it out.My contact found evidence that someone in their department was doctoring reports, intimidating, and killing witnesses, and a laundry list of things to get a false conviction on several cases

I finally started coming back to reality, and I can tell that it is still dark outside. My eyes flutter open and I don’t recognize my surroundings. Super. The room I am in is small, but it looks like it belongs to a teenage girl. Posters are hung on the wall, a small desk across from the bed I am on has books stacked on one side, and papers scattered over the top. The smell of dust and time fills my senses and there are big wooden block letters hanging on the door telling me that I am in Mara’s room.“You’ve GOT to be kidding me.” I say to myself knowing exactly where I am, but I don’t have any idea how I got here. I jump out of the bed and storm toward the door. I go to wretch it open, I’m angry, but its locked. I move to go out of the window and discover that they have bars installed on them now. Who the fuck does this woman think she is? She has got a lot of nerve.&n

  • Hannah   Chapter 28 - Unknown

The wolves served their purpose. Too my surprise they made my job much easier, though I am certain that they did that inadvertently. Hidden in the woods just out of sight I watched the interaction between my target and the distractions I hired to assist with my task. She spoke to the nomads, a plea not for her own life which caught me off guard. There was an honesty in her, as if she was truly trying to protect them from something. Obviously, she doesn’t know what these creatures are capable of.I watched from the cover of the trees as the energy pulsed into her. What began as a gentle pull from the environment around her slowly built, the apex reached heights even someone like myself couldn’t have imagined in my wildest dreams. I must admit, it was terrifying. I’m no stranger to the terrible things that most people don’t know exist. Hell, I’m one of them. In that moment, this woma

“Christine, I gotta run over to Gabe’s real quick and grab my phone.” I shouted through the kitchen as I made my way to the door. She was getting the rest of the kids in bed. Most of them had settled, so I felt she and Alicia had it covered. I was walking back to the pack house with my phone when Lily came crashing through my thoughts in a panic, ‘Hannah run!’, but it was too late. The first one came bursting out to the woods on the eastern side of the pack house and ran towards the huge window that looked out from the living room. I thought that for sure the glass would shatter from the sheer size of the matted and filthy wolf running at full speed, but it only bounced off with a yelp before its lifeless body fell to the porch. I knew it was dead because I opened my mind and all I felt coming from it was an emptiness. Not the thrum and hazy fog of unconsciousness. It’s comrades thought

  • Hannah   Chapter 26 - Gabriel

As Hannah looked around the table at our lively group I wondered if her abilities were overwhelming her. She seemed to be looking at everyone intently. Maybe she is trying to sort through everyone’s emotions, I reasoned with myself. ‘Gabe, listen to her heart rate. It seems different like when she first saw us.’ Theo said. What does that mean? Honestly, I was too preoccupied with the beautiful woman standing in front of me to pay attention to her heart rate. Obviously, Theo wasn’t.‘Her heart rate is always stronger when she looks at us, but when she saw us the first time it was different. Like it skipped a beat synchronizing with ours.’ As he told me this I listened for her heart and heard what he was talking about. As she looked around, first at David and Alicia, then Melissa and Marcus, a slight jump in her heart rate, barely noticeable. ‘It did the same thing

  • Hannah   Chapter 25 - Hannah

With everyone in the pack house, I decided that it would be best if I closed myself from everyone’s emotions until I was more comfortable. This is something that I do when I anticipate being in a large group setting. I will start being completely closed off, and then person by person I will open up. Sometimes a person’s emotions are so strong that the intensity is overwhelming.Usually it depends on the context and is entirely circumstantial. Its like when youre listening to the radio and a commercial comes on. The volume seems to have raised significantly, or if you’re watching a movie when the action scene seems much louder than the more somber scene. Dealing with human emotion and the presence of so many, it can be a lot to deal with. The complete absence of emotions assaulting my brain can be helpful when I need to relax, so I decided to wait a while before feeling everyone out.As everyone sta

Greg came in to her life when he brought his sister in law to the clinic for her monthly check up. She didn’t think anything of him at first. She thought he was married to the women he came in with. Hannah was six months old, and Julie proudly hung a picture of her on her desk in the reception area. “Cute baby” he told her looking right into her green eyes. She felt flustered at the intensity of his gaze but politely thanked him and asked if he was excited to meet his own little one. The woman with him burst out laughing when he looked at Julie with a puzzled expression.“Jeez Greg! Leave it to you to hit on someone at the prenatal clinic!” the woman beside him said. “He's my brother in law sweetie, my husband is out of town and Casanova here insisted on bringing me to my appointment. He’s a gentleman I promise.” She managed to choke out through her laughter. “oh lord!,
