Gabriel swept Scarlette up in his arms and carried her away from her attacker. She was in shock and felt cold to the bone despite the warm, humid air of New Orleans. Gabriel set her down gently on her feet and held her close. She buried her face in his chest and breathed in his familiar scent of sandalwood and leather.

"Are you hurt?" he asked, his voice soothing.
