Kaylee's POV
I sucked in a deep breath, the details of Daniel's last statement shocking me to the bones. If someone had told me that today was going to turn out worse than yesterday, I would have doubted it. What happened to my neighbor's advice? She'd told me to be hopeful, and look forward to things changing this morning. I had held onto a tiny glimmer of hope in my heart, and had prayed that it would come true, so why the hell did Daniel just hand me divorce papers?“What?!” I stuttered, too stunned to react. “Daniel, what is this?”
“Tell me you can still read.” He scoffed and Liliana chuckled from her seat. “What does the letter say?
“Divorce.” I muttered half to myself than anyone else. Even calling out the words didn't make it sound real enough. No, there had to be a mistake somewhere. “No, no, no Daniel. There has to be a mistake somewhere.”.
“If you need time to take it all in,” Daniel's voice was cold. “I'll give it to you. Read through it for a couple of days, I'm sure you'll final grasp the concept.”
Without anything else, Daniel stalked out, leaving me gaping like a fish out of water. I stood there, rooted to the spot and I probably would have stayed there for much longer, had someone not broken me out of my reverie.
“Isn't this sad?” I blinked, just to come face to face with Liliana. The snug grin she had on her face was infuriating, but I wasn't even in the right frame of mind to frown.
“Just look at you.” She continued, her tone mocking me. “You've really had a series of shocking events since yesterday, will it ever end? I have no idea, but there's one thing I want to tell you, leave Daniel alone.”“What?” I gasped. She was too close for comfort and her request was definitely one that didn't sit right with me. “i don't….”
“You don't need to do anything.” She snapped. “Just stay far far away from my Daniel.”
“Your Daniel?” I stuttered, unable to believe she had just said that. “What the hell is that supposed to mean?”
“It means he's not yours.” Pointy fingers dug into both sides of my jaw. A burst of pain spread through my face, and for a moment all I could see were the red shade of her nails. “You've had him for quite some time now. You trapped him in this stupid marriage against his will but now that he has reconnected with me, we're going to make sure we kick you out.”
“You're nothing but a worthless piece of trash.” She yelled suddenly, her fingers digging into my face. “All these years and you couldn't give him a child.” She spat.
Somehow, that was all the motivation I needed to break free of her grip. A million and one responses rode on the tip of my tongue, each one wanting to break free. I wanted nothing more than to give her a piece of my mind, she deserved it after all.
However I chose the high road and made my way out of the room instead.“Where are you going?” Liliana called out to me. Instead of indulging in her antics, I decided to be the bigger person. “I'm not done with you.”
“But I am.” I shook my head. “Just leave me alone.”
“Does the truth hurt so much that you can't take it?” There was mockery in her voice. “Is it such a bitter pill for you to swallow?”
“Good day, Liliana” There was no need to waste any more of my time with her. If I had known just what she was up to, then maybe I would have tried a different approach. I had barely taken a step forward when something happened. One minute I was on my feet, and the next Liliana had shoved into me, pushing me to the ground.
I collided with the ground immediately, my stomach coming in contact with a sharp corner on the floor. Red hot pain shot up my body, before searing deep into my bones. A gutteral cry slid past my lips as I writhed in pain. My vision blurred and I could feel the life slowly seeping out of my body. It went on like that, until the cold hands of darkness blanketed me whole.
The last thing I remembered was seeing Liliana’s smug face before everything went dark.§§§§§§§§§§§
I had woken up, but I wish I didn't. My body felt numb and for the first time in my life, I wanted to feel something, even if it was the same pain that had landed me here in the first place. Especially after the news that I'd just heard, I needed to feel something.
“You're awake,” a woman in a white coat said and I gulped, swallowing.
I placed a hand on my stomach and looked at her expectantly. My face fell when she shook her head.
“I'm sorry ma'am.” she said. The worry and compassion in her eyes should've given it all away, but I didn't want to believe it. “We tried everything we could, but your child didn't make it”
Of all the things that could happen, why did it have to be that? My baby had been the only thing that could have kept me going. Memories of a life we could have spent together flashed before my eyes, and before long, I was crying. The salty liquid rolled down my cheeks, as my heart broke all the more. If I ever needed a sign that I was bad luck, then this was it right here.
“Well, well, well.” I heard and my eyes snapped up to meet his. The moment my gaze fell on him, I just knew more trouble had arrived. “You're finally up. How do you feel? How do you feel knowing you would never be a mother?”
“What? Your slut pushed me! This is all her fault.” I shrieked angrily struggling to sit up but the doctor held me firmly in place.
She glared at Daniel and pointed at the door. “I have to ask you to leave sir. All this negative energy is bad for the patient.”
Daniel scoffed and ignored her as he continued insulting me. “You're a barren wasteland, Kaylee, there's no need Liliana.” he spat, pure hate in his eyes. “Your womb is nothing but a rocky ground that can't hold children and I'm more than glad I won't have to deal with you for the rest of my life.”
Daniel hurled a few more insults my way until the doctor threatened to call security.
He spat at me before walking out hastily. The doctor shook her head in disgust and sent me a pitiful stare. “I am very sorry for your loss ma'am but I have to see to my other patients.”
I faced the other side staring at the wall as I cried hard, mourning the loss of my child.
I don't know how long I stayed like that for but suddenly I heard the door open and footsteps coming towards me.
“Kaylee?” I raised my head to the sound of my name. Even in a million years, I never thought I would see him again. “ What are you doing here?”
“Hayden?”
Hayden's POV I slowly made my way to the ward the nurse had just pointed me to. It took a while, but with the help of the doctor, she finally agreed. I took one glance at myself at the mirror hanging on the wall. Yes, she had just suffered something any woman shouldn't have to, but I couldn't help but look presentable. If I didn't look serious, then there was no way she was going to take me seriously. I stopped at the designated ward and sucked in a couple of breaths before knocking. I pushed open the door and perhaps if I had known what was waiting for me on the other side, I wouldn't have been in such a hurry. The brown haired woman wasn't who I was expecting to see, not even in a million years. We'd lost contact for the longest time, so what were the odds that she was here. “Kaylee?” Her head bobbed up to meet mine, and I didn't miss the surprise in her eyes.m. Just like me, she never thought she was going to see me again. “What are you doing here?”Who would have thought
Kaylee's POV I stared at the mirror in front of me, my reflection staring back at me. If I was being honest with myself, I would say that I didn't look too bad. At first, I didn't even want to dress up. When dad had brought it up, I had turned down the idea immediately. After I'd walked into the house when Hayden dropped me off, I went straight to apologizing to father. Unlike how I thought he was going to react, he'd welcomed me with one of the biggest bear hugs I'd ever received in my entire life. However, that sweet demeanor disappeared the moment I told him about Daniel.Father never liked Daniel and when I told him everything he did to me,I knew it took everything in him to not go and shoot the blasted man in his balls. He was pleased however, when I told him I was going to get a divorce. To celebrate, he decided to throw me a party, the very one I was dressing up for.I ran a hand over the invisible creases on my black dress. It was a little black number, with a corset bustier
I stared at the huge vase in front of me, currently being held up by two people. They'd been holding it for quite some time now, and honestly, a tiny part of me was beginning to feel sorry for them. Why? Because the case was damn heavy. But even at that, I couldn't bring myself to drop it off at any corner of the room. I needed to find the right spot to keep it because everything had to be perfect. “Could you move it to the left please?” Amidst the busy background of the living room, they shuffled to the left, before waiting for my verdict. “No, take it to the right.” It still didn't fit any of those places and a small frown made its way to my lips. After thinking for a couple of seconds, I finally decided.“Just leave it where it is.” The duo heaved a sigh of relief as they dropped the vase to the ground. I had no idea why I hadn't noticed it before, but it looked perfect in its new position. “Can you two check on the refreshments please?” With a nod and bright smiles on their fac
Kaylee's POV I froze, completely rooted to my spot. My ears buzzed with Daniel's last words and no matter how many times they echoed in my ears, I just couldn't make any sense of it. “What? My skin buzzed with more than one emotion, none of them positive in anyway. My stomach churned and I felt something stir in the pit of my stomach. “I don't understand.” Daniel said nothing and his stance made me all the more nervous. I could feel the eyes behind me boring holes into my back. I was sure they had a million questions on their mind, the same way I had mine too. “You're joking.” I burst into laughter. Honestly, now that I thought of it, it couldn't be more than a prank. Daniel was known for playing a couple of pranks now and then, even when they were extreme and I wouldn't be surprised if he chose to play one today. “This has to be some kind of prank. Am I right guys?’ My laughs turned into a nervous chuckle as I turned behind me. I was hoping for even the tiniest bit of support
