Wade

It was sad enough that I wanted to make sure to honor Mari's request for me. It was the most difficult thing to do but I stayed out while the nature of my job was diverted in seconds. I was handling the list lamest part of the job. It wasn't because the supervisor wanted it but someone had told him to do that to me. It was something I was expecting. Then, if my day was terrible at least, Mari's shouldn't have a problem. I thought of going to see her but then, I realized that it might be too far-fetched since it was my first time here. I wanted to make an Impression, so I would be able to find an underlying problem in these people. Probably, find a loophole that they were hiding.

Most of their crimes were at home but still, there must be something that they were up to. I wanted to make sure everything made sense to me. I was thinking of finally letting Mari in on the secret but I had a feeling that she was going to defend her family.

No one defends the ones that are finally going

WadeI couldn't wait for her because of how angry I was. I tried to calm down after everything I had discovered at night. There was nothing to say to her. I understood why she had lied. I had never handled things subtly because of the lengths these people go to, just to frustrate her, all I could think of was returning the favor. If she had told me, there wouldn't be an exception. That's how much I hated them and their actions. The actions of her family were reflected in the people she claimed to work with. It was sad and heartbreaking. I finally got to work and as usual, I was stuck doing some clerical work that wasn't due until the upcoming weeks, trust whoever was doing it to frustrate me even more. I just did it, I was okay with bartending, there was no way I wouldn't enjoy this. Enjoy the same thing that I might use in bringing down whoever decided to do this to me. It was only a matter of time. In no time, I heard a bang on the door. I was in the copy room, making a few copi

Wade The door to Marianna’s room where we sleep opened briefly before shutting with soft click but I didn’t bother to raise my head from the papers which I was looking through. Everybody knows better than to step into Marianna’s room and deal with her ‘uncouth’ husband. In fact the only person who would dare to step into her room would be Marianna herself. I ignored the door and my wife for now. In as much as I would like to pay special attention to my wife and not her step mother but that woman has been stepping on my nerves recently so I needed to pay her a little attention. One which would serve as a reminder that my wife now has someone who would go to war for her. One who was only held back by his wife words. Now if only I can see the connection between the payments and the financing, I know that there was something extra going on but I cannot see it. Marianna’s warm touch burst through my body like an electric shock as she brush against me while leaning to see what was t

Going downstairs to wait for Marianna while having a daily verbal word exchange with her family was the new normal for me. And this morning was not any different from how the rest of the mornings usually go. I step into the room, they frown their faces and wrinkle their noses like they smell something putrid and I ignore their existence like I usually do because they are not worth my attention. I ignore until one is stupid enough to make herself my target. The dumb one for today is Cynthia. And she started sly this time around which I completely respected. She mumbled into her cup. “His wife is not yet around yet he has the guts to sit here and act like we are equals.” I scoffed and didn’t bother to lower my voice. “I married someone whose bloodline owns this house. You, you are the free interloper, because you are the adopted child. Shouldn’t you have more grace and act right at the very least.” Cynthia lips dropped opened at my words only for me to reach for the tea in fron

I felt my heart sink further in my chest with each passing hour. It didn't help that we were all scattered outside the emergency room, watching doctors and nurses mill about without once glancing in our direction. It had been five hours already, five long dreadful hours of endless pacing and agitation. I was learning new things today— that I could feel so strongly for another person, that I, Wade could feel something akin to anxiety. To make matters worse, there was absolutely nothing I could do for her. I couldn't exactly order specialists to be flown in from all over the world to attend to her, neither could I order for her to be moved to the VIP ward. All that money sitting in my back account and yet, the only thing I could do was pace and hope. If anything happened to Marianna, if anything... My thoughts were disrupted by the sound of approaching footsteps. It was a doctor on purple scrubs and a short white coat. His mouth was set in a thin line and his hair was disheveled, giv

The stillness of the room was enough to send my thoughts on a downward spiral. There was nothing wrong with her, she was simply asleep. I knew this in my head but my heart would not stop going haywire.I took her tiny hand in mine and caressed her fingers, letting my mind transport me to our kiss, to her smiles, to the moments I had stared at her as she slept, holding myself back from touching her and smelling her hair. The sudden twitching of her fingers threw me out of my reverie. I stared at her, wondering if I had imagined the movement of her hand in mine until her eyes fluttered open ever so slowly. "Marianna." I breathed out and that single word held relief and gratitude and happiness. Her eyes were red and as they rolled in their sockets, her features took on a look of confusion. She turned her eyes on me and to my surprise, they misted over. "Are you okay? Are you hurt anywhere?" I asked quickly in rapid succession. She opened her mouth slightly but didn't say anything, ma

I hated being here just as much as I hated being in Marianna's family house. But at least I could have fun there by engaging those fools in a drawn out battle that I would eventually win. Here, it was always the same old. The too high, white walls, the endless grounds that stretched for miles and miles, the fountain that spat water with a solemn serenity. The stillness. It was easy to become immersed in a world far removed from reality here. I sighed as I stared up at the gigantic black gates with the roaring lion head sculpted on top before I pressed the intercom. An automated voice inquired of my identity and after flashing my ID at the cameras and stating my name, the gates rolled aside to reveal the edifice within its confines. Nothing, absolutely nothing had changed. My Bugatti Centodieci was still parked in the driveway exactly as I had left it. The guards on their black three piece suits were still scattered all over the grounds, staring directly ahead without once blinking

I stared at Marianna. There was a tiny smile on her face and it was such a beautiful, beautiful thing to see. "I don't want to fight with you. We are a team." She had said when I struck a conversation with her earlier. And just like that, our fight was forgotten. I still thought it was best to move out but it was even more unbearable having to stay angry at her and be given the silent treatment. "Me too. I don't like fighting with you." I had replied. It was difficult to talk with her without wanting to kiss her lips and touch her hair and pull her close. This morning, she had startled awake from a nightmare and I had held her while she caught her breath. After that, it was easier to talk to her. I'd asked if she wanted tea or water and while she sipped from her glass of water, she had confessed that she didn't want to fight me. It surprised me how much those simple words warmed my heart, how much relief I felt after she had said the words. Now, she was sitting before the vanity

I ran my fingers through the lush fullness of her hair. It felt silky and soft, but there were other soft places I wanted to place my hands on, to feel and to caress. I gently angled her neck and swooped down on her lips, tasting the bliss in her tongue and her lips. I bit down on her lower lip, lingering for a moment to get lost in the moment and she let out a low moan. It felt like music to my ears. "Wade." She breathed and the world fell away at my feet. This was heaven. I knew in that moment that there was no use holding myself back anymore, pretending that my gazes didn't linger on her lips, her chest, her waist, acting like I didn't want her so desperately that it hurt. I ripped off my shirt with a ferocity that surprised even me while she circled her arms around my neck and stepped backwards until she was backed up against the wall. I abandoned my vain attempt at undoing the belt on my pants and went for her dress. It was easy to take off because it was strapless and I watc

"You're going to wear out that glass." I barely heard Allen as I continued the methodical action I'd been engaged in for the past ten minutes. I'd told him I was here to see him but that was only a half truth. In actuality, I wanted to get my mind off things and get out of the way of Marianna's family. I knew that her father was already spinning tales of how I was trying to drive a wedge between his tight knit family and force Mari to move out. If I stayed at home, I wasn't sure I could control myself and Marianna would not like that. "Wade, please." I looked up at Allen, mid swipe. He had on that exasperated look he usually wore when someone was making things difficult for him. "What?" I asked, setting the sparkling clean glass on the counter top. "You're in my way." He replied pointedly. I shuffled to the corner and watched as he pulled out a bottle of whiskey. "I thought you quit this place for good. You don't even care about the revenue anymore." I clicked my tongue as I re

I was frustrated. I was on the verge of pulling out my hair but somehow, I still managed to keep my cool. Usually, I wouldn't care even if someone was desperate to sabotage their life, but this time was different. This time, it involved Marianna and I was convinced it was my duty to make her see reason. We were standing once again in the hallway that opened into the stairwell. I was not sure how we got here anymore and why we decided to have our shouting match here, but I was too fed up to care. "You didn't want it, so I put up with it. But it's getting ridiculous." I stressed, my voice already stretched to breaking point. Why was she so stubborn in irrelevant matters? "Wade, please this conversation was over a while ago." She replied folding her arms across her chest. It saddened me how she was not willing to see things from my point of view and it annoyed me that I would end up succumbing to her decision. If push came to shove, I would stand by her side no matter what. The only

MARIANNAThe loud burst of murmurings surrounded me and I stood beside Wade, unsure what to say or do. I turned to look at his face, to check for a hint of humor, but there was none. He was dead serious. "Wait... Wait..." I lifted a hand to calm the surrounding chaos but the noise did not quieten down until Wade brought a hand down heavily on a nearby table. A hush fell over the staff immediately as they turned their eyes back on him. "Like I said just now, you're fired. Please clear out your desks." He reiterated, his gaze lingering especially on Mr. Hawthorn. "Wade, I need a moment with you." I said as quietly as I could manage. I expertly avoided the stricken faces of my employees and led him into my office. It was one thing to want to help me but firing my staff was an entirely different thing. "Don't you think you're going too far?" I asked barely waiting for him to shut the door behind him. "No, I don't think so." He took his seat on the sofa directly in front of my work d

MARIANNAI bristled silently within me. It was common knowledge that everyone wanted me out, but it had not occurred to me that they would come so brazenly. If I dropped out of the inheritance race, then I was being basically ousted from the family. I balled up my fists, willing my brain to think of something, anything that could deflect their attention from me. I already knew it would be futile to try and plead my cause, to explain that for a dying subsidiary like the one I managed, five million was an unimaginable feat. They already knew all this, they just wanted an excuse. "Why must she give up?" Wade's voice was like a ray of sunshine on a winter morning. It made me calm immediately. All eyes turned on him but he was already positioned in a fighting stance, his jaw tightly set and his eyes locked on Cynthia across the table. "Stay out of this, Wade." Kennedy snapped but Wade didn't give him the luxury of a response. "I asked, why she must give up?" "Because the revenue..."
