Sophia was jolted from her sleep, as if someone had awakened her out of a deep slumber, she immediately got up from her position and looked around.
Albert was leaning against the headboard, looking at her with a calm. He looked better than before. Meanwhile, Sophia was lying beside him. The last thing she remembered was sitting on the floor and leaning against the edge of the bed. When did she fall asleep and move here?
Sophia cleared her throat, she chose not to dwell on why she was on this bed, sleeping next to Albert.
“Feeling better?” Sophia asked, lowering her legs to the floor and avoiding his gaze.
Albert nodded briefly, staring at Sophia's every move with a flat expression.
"That's good," Sophia said, glancing at the empty tray on the nightstand. The food had clearly been eaten, presumably by Albert. As she glanced back, her gaze landed on the notebook resting on his lap and the pencil in his hand. He was sketching something that Sophia couldn't see clearly from her current place.
Sophia rose to her feet. "I'm sorry, I had the audacity to enter your room and didn't think to call a doctor and decided to take care of you by myself."
Albert didn’t look up from his sketching. He simply nodded and replied, his voice still weak, “Next time, don’t do anything like this without my permission.”
Sophia blinked, stunned by his curt response. “You’re welcome, Albert,” she said sarcastically. Then without waiting for his response, Sophia turned around.
“Sophia.”
At the doorway, Sophia stopped, and turning back to face him. "Next time, I'll let you die alone!"
Once Sophia returned to her room, she hurried to the bathroom to clean herself. Swearing that if she got infected, she would strangle the ungrateful man.
Back in Albert’s room, he let out a rough sigh after Sophia’s departure. His eyes dropped to the sketch he’d been working on, a sleeping woman leaning against the bed. It was Sophia. He tore the paper from his notebook, crumpled it, and tossed it into the trash. Then he lay back on the pillow, closing his eyes as the pounding in his head persisted.

After Dana found out about Albert's condition, she immediately called the family doctor to check on him. While Sophia chose to stay away after that day, she even only left the room if she felt hungry. For what? To avoid Albert, of course. And to avoid Dana's curiosity about the day Sophia mindlessly treated Albert.
It was already Monday, Albert had returned to work as usual and most likely wouldn't be home. Dana had gone to assist her husband on the farm that was reserved for the Raymond family only. Since Sophia intended to cook her own dinner today, she asked Dana to go home.
She walked towards the kitchen humming softly while putting her long hair in a high ponytail, opened the refrigerator and selected some ingredients she needed. Sophia didn't know what to cook, but yesterday she saw Dana buying meat and Sophia had a sudden craving for stir-fried meat with fresh vegetables.
It would be delicious, she thought optimistically.
Two hours later, Sophia stared disappointedly at the dish in front of her. The beef was cut into overly large chunks, was tough and chewy. The vegetables were burnt, dry, and unappetizing. To make matters worse, the dish was so spicy that just a single bite set her tongue on fire.
Sophia chuckled after biting her tongue for a long time, then untied her ponytail and abandoned the disastrous meal.
To hell with her failed cooking!
What had possessed her to attempt cooking again? She should’ve learned from her past failures. She couldn't cook! That was final. No matter how hard she tried.
Sophia was feeling increasingly gray, and she hoped the warm water and aroma therapy would make her feel better.

A bath, indeed, was the right choice.
Sophia returned to the kitchen feeling a bit lighter, but her mood shifted abruptly as her gaze fell upon Albert. Her steps faltered, and her expression twisted into a mix of shock and disbelief.
Albert stood at the counter, a spoonful of her failed dish raised to his lips.
“Don’t eat that!” she blurted, rushing forward.
Albert’s movements immediately stopped. “Why?”
“Just don’t,” she insisted.
“What, you’re not willing to share your food with me anymore?” Ignoring her protest, Albert popped the piece of meat into his mouth.
Right at the first chew, Albert immediately stopped and his eyes widened in horror.
“I warned you,” Sophia muttered, biting back a laugh.
Albert struggled to swallow the tough, fiery morsel, downing a glass of water in one gulp. “You made this?” he asked, incredulous.
Sophia nodded slowly.
“Next time, don’t even try to cook,” Albert said sharply.
Unable to hold back her irritation, Sophia grabbed the dish and threw it into the trash. Turning to face Albert, she glared at him boldly. “I’ll do whatever I want! Tomorrow, I’ll cook more meat and make it your dinner!”
Albert stepped back, eyeing her warily.
Realizing her ridiculous temper, Sophia also stepped back and looked down. Why is she getting angry in such a stupid way?
“Did I offend you?” Albert asked after they had been silent for a while.
Sophia turned her face to look at Albert again. “Not at all,” she replied quickly.
“Good. Well then, okay, I’ll cook dinner for us.”
Sophia wasn’t sure if Albert was serious, but he was.
He started cooking, handling the ingredients with effortless confidence.
This was the first time she had ever seen Albert cook and knew that he could actually do it. His shirt sleeves were rolled to his elbows. The top two buttons were deliberately undone, revealing smooth tanned skin. His gaunt cheeks, firm jaw were tightened, and his sharp eyes stared with concentration.
Albert moved around the kitchen like a professional, doing everything deftly. And watching him cook like this completely made Sophia lose focus on everything but him.
And stupidly, Sophia had been standing there watching Albert cook for almost half an hour.
“You’re good at cooking,” Sophia commented.
Albert glanced at her briefly. “Sit down.”
Sophia hesitated. “I feel bad just sitting here. Tell me what to do.”
Albert paused for a moment, seemed to think, then pointed at the dining table. “You can set the table.”
And without question, Sophia spread the tablecloth, placed all the tableware neatly, and put a vase of flowers in the center. She also lit a candle.
Noticing Albert working with the leftover meat, Sophia decided to get a bottle of wine and some ice cubes.
After everything was done, Albert carried over two plates of roast meat and the sauce he made himself, to the dining table Sophia had set.
“Don’t you need a shower? You’re sweating,” Sophia said, speaking her mind without thinking. She quickly corrected, “I don’t think that you stink, it’s just that... I think a shower would make you feel more comfortable. Yeah, right? Well, I don’t know. It’s up to you!”
Albert raised an eyebrow, giving her an odd look.
Sophia almost choked on her own saliva. “Why?”
Albert immediately shook his head. “Nothing,” he replied, pulling a chair and sitting down.
Sophia did the same. She picked up a glass and poured wine into both their glasses.
As she sipped her drink, Sophia felt the heat of the wine trail down her throat, leaving a warm aftertaste. She placed her glass back on the table and glanced at Albert, who was seated across from her, his sharp eyes meeting hers.
All of a sudden, Sophia felt every inch of her skin crawl, and her heartbeat accelerated. She realized this was their first real dinner together.
A dinner that actually felt like dinner, not a compulsion to swallow lumps of meat down the throat in a five-star restaurant where everyone was watching them with interest. The dinners they have had so far have always been filled with falsehoods and pretenses to emphasize to the media that they are still husband and wife. Yes, some people do forget sometimes, Sophia always wants to laugh every time she remembers why she was there in an expensive dress and heavy makeup to beautify her face.
Whereas now, Sophia is not wearing an expensive dress, just an oversized T-shirt and denim shorts, and a bare face. However, this felt like the best dinner she’d ever had.
Albert didn’t say much, but whenever Sophia asked him a question, he always answered calmly.
This reminded Sophia again of that night on the ship. And for a moment, she thought she saw that same version of Albert now. But every time her heart tried to melt, common sense warned her by showing her the pictures of Albert’s intimacy with many women out there.
But still, dinner passed peacefully.
No sharp words. No arguments. Just an ordinary conversation that flowed easily. Sophia was relaxed, and so was Albert. They left everything behind and just focused on the present moment.

Albert never brought his female friends home. Or as Sophia prefers to call them, his mistresses.Sophia knew Albert had a luxury apartment in the city, and she was sure that was where he entertained his mistresses to stay. Being the only woman Albert had ever brought to this house didn’t make Sophia feel special. Of course, it was only because she was his wife. But then again, the wife label didn't make Sophia feel anything more. The moment of last night's dinner had been broken from Sophia's mind when the next morning she read the gossip about the return of the blonde aka Cecile, to the arms of Albert Raymond.Sophia had no idea why anyone would actually get paid to write something like that. Don't they have other more worthwhile topics to present? What's so good about peeping into someone's affair life and gleefully dissecting a crumbling marriage? For some people, or maybe many people; it was entertainment. But Sophia would rather wish that she was just an ordinary person, someone
“I already told you, this trick won’t work anymore. It’s pointless bringing me to these meetings just to avoid the temptations of those women. To them, I have no value left as your wife.”Sophia turned to Albert and found that he was staring at her. She quickly averted her gaze, looking at the passing vehicles through the car window.“Why?” Albert asked. Why what? Sophia thought bitterly, hiding her resentment.“Why would they think that?”Sophia looked back at Albert, her gaze cold. “Obviously because you cheat and sleep with a different woman every week. Do you think my dignity as a wife and a woman means anything to them now?” she scoffed.Albert’s eyes sharpened, and in one swift motion, he cornered Sophia against the window, pinning her in place.Sophia’s eyes widened in shock, her heart racing from their sudden proximity.“If you have a problem with it, why don’t you start fulfilling your duties as a wife?”Sophia refused to let herself tremble or feel intimidated, as Albert cle
The thing that surprised Sophia was that Albert had actually booked an entire restaurant for them. She hadn’t expected him to go through with it until a waiter greeted her as “Mrs. Raymond.” Hearing the title made Sophia feel mocked. She didn’t respond or smile as she usually would.Sophia was ushered to a seat at a table that was exquisitely arranged, exuding an air of luxury and romance. It was situated next to a large glass window that offered a stunning view of the sparkling cityscape.Even so, Sophia felt a disappointment when she realized Albert wasn’t there yet.Typical, Sophia thought. He was probably drowning in his pile of work right now.
“What the hell was that?!”Sophia turned away, walking past Albert and entering the house.Albert chased after her and forcefully grabbed her hand to turn her toward him. “Answer me!” Albert hissed firmly.Sophia looked at him coldly. “What should I answer, Albert?” she asked calmly.Albert gritted his teeth. “Who the hell is that guy?! We had agreed to have dinner together, but you were busy cheating with another man.”Sophia held herself back from exploding with anger at Albert’s words.“Who is he? His name is Daniel Mateo, Albert,” Sophia replied. Her hand reached up to cup Albert’s face, gently stroking the harsh lines marked by anger. “He’s a very kind and charming man, don’t
The next morning, Sophia woke up with a headache. She stared at her reflection in the mirror and clicked her tongue in disgust at the remnants of her tears still clinging to her face.Sophia then proceeded to freshen up. Just as she was finishing, Albert’s loyal servant, Sir Harrith, informed her that she was to get ready and head to Albert’s office at his request.Sophia didn’t want to go, especially with her emotions still in turmoil, but did she have any other choice? After getting ready, Sophia went downstairs and greeted Dana, having a small bite of her breakfast. Dana protested her unhealthy eating habits, but Sophia ignored her and said goodbye.Since Sir Harrith hadn’t mentioned anything about the purpose of Albert’s summons, Sophia
When she regained consciousness, Sophia found herself in a hospital room. With the characteristic scent of the place and its silence, she slowly woke up, wincing slightly as a sudden, painful throb pulsed through her head. Her right hand moved toward her temple to check the condition of her head, but the pain shifted there instead, and Sophia realized something. She was hooked up to an IV, and her hand was bandaged. It must be broken or sprained, Sophia thought to herself. She clearly remembered the events that had occurred before. This made her look around, as if searching for someone’s presence, but she found herself alone.Sophia felt disappointed. She then spent the next five minutes staring at the white ceiling, bored,
After everyone had left, leaving only Sophia and Albert alone in the room, Sophia spoke without looking at Albert. “You don’t need to feel guilty or indebted. What I did for you was just a reflex.”Yes, it was a reflex, driven by her feelings for Albert. But, of course, Sophia would never admit that. From the sofa, Albert smiled. He tossed the bloodstained tissue into the trash can and sat with his elbows resting on his knees.“What’s wrong with you?” Sophia asked, half-grumbling. “You didn’t have to hit Luke like that just because he came to visit me.”Albert avoided her gaze. He was asking himself the same question she had just voiced.“Albert?” Sophia called
When morning came, Sophia woke up to find Albert was no longer in the room. The sun had risen high in the sky, its light streaming through the open window. Sophia sat up, feeling a slight dizziness in her head, but it was better than yesterday. Perhaps it was due to her surroundings; Sophia had never liked hospitals, and she wasn’t used to being away from home for too long.A doctor came in to check on her condition. The man said that she might be able to go home the next day. After the doctor left, a woman in a white uniform came in, bringing her breakfast and medication, then left, leaving Sophia alone once more.Sophia stared at the porridge in the bowl. Her appetite instantly disappeared just from smelling the food, but Sophia wanted to get better. She didn’t want Albert to think of her as childish or spoiled. So, with her left hand feeling numb
Sophia wore a white sundress with a ribbon decoration on its high collar, wide sleeves that gathered at the wrists, and a skirt that reached her ankles. The dress was one of Sophia's favorites, the one she most wanted to wear, but she had never found the right moment to do so. She was happy to finally wear it today.Sophia stared at herself in the mirror, wondering whether she should tie her hair or leave it down. The decision was so confusing because Sophia didn’t know which one to choose, until a loud sigh sounded behind her.Albert, who had been waiting for Sophia while lying on her bed, stood up and walked over to Sophia at her vanity."I prefer it when your hair is down," Albert said, then took the hair tie from Sophia’s
Sophia woke up with a slight ache in her body because once again she had stayed up late the previous night writing her manuscript. Every time she received a call from Albert while he was working this week, she found herself flooded with ideas that flowed from her mind. She of course didn’t waste this opportunity and quickly wrote them down, not realizing that time had slipped by and it was already early morning. But this morning was different. Sophia woke up to find that she wasn’t alone in bed. A strong arm was draped over her stomach, and she turned her head to the side.“Albert?” Sophia whispered hoarsely.Albert was lying on his stomach, half of his face hidden in the pillow. His hair was messy, and as usual, he wasn’t wearing a top, so his slightly tanned skin contrasted with the w
Even though Albert and Sophia had agreed on the terms of their agreement that night, they didn’t immediately act on it. They decided to sleep in separate bedrooms for the night, under the pretense of thoroughly reviewing the agreement. But that wasn’t the real reason at all. The suggestion had come from Sophia, who felt she needed to calm herself down before her heart burst.Sophia couldn’t contain her excitement. She even found herself doing silly things in her room just to channel her overwhelming joy.All night, Sophia bit the pillow she was hugging to stifle the screams that threatened to escape from the uncontrollable emotions in her chest. If Albert had seen her like that, she would have been mortified. That was why Sophia suggested they sleep in separate rooms, until she could get a grip on
Albert and Sophia were now both in the living room, seated across from each other on the plush white sofa that, oddly enough, only made Sophia more nervous.“Why… an agreement?” Sophia asked, confused.Albert, who was sorting through papers on the table, looked up at her. “Didn’t I already explain the reason earlier?”Sophia averted her gaze from Albert’s intense stare. “Yes, but… why?”Albert let out a sigh as he pushed an empty folder under the table, his eyes never leaving Sophia.“Because you always seem like you’re trying to run away from me,” Albert said.Sophia hadn’t expected that answer to come out of Albert’s mouth. Her heart pounded erratically, as though it were trying
“Yes, I do have a special relationship with Millie Matthew.”Albert's voice pulled Sophia out of her thoughts. “What did you say?” Sophia asked, having missed his words.Albert sighed, then sat down beside her, gazing at his wife with calm eyes. “Millie Matthew, I do have a special relationship with her.”Sophia wasn’t surprised to hear this because she had suspected it from the start. “What kind... of relationship?” she asked cautiously.“She’s my ex-girlfriend,” Albert replied.Sophia’s expression didn’t change, but inside, she couldn’t stop the sharp pain piercing her chest, just like on the night of their wedding.
The moment Sophia had been waiting for finally arrived. The dinner event ended after they had finished the dessert that Sophia had taken from the fridge. Albert liked sweet food, and usually, Dana would prepare plenty of sweets for him. So, Sophia took what was available.Sophia reminded herself that next time she invited her in-laws or parents over for dinner, she would need to hire at least three professional waiters to handle everything. She didn’t want something like today’s incident to happen again. As hosts, Albert and Sophia escorted their guests outside to the terrace. Albert and Adrian walked ahead, waiting for the car and driver to arrive. Meanwhile, Sophia and Millie were a bit farther behind. Not only that, Millie was sticking to Sophia like a leech, making Sophia extremely uncomfortable.&ld
In the end, Sophia had no choice but to follow Millie’s suggestion to cook together. This was also supported by Adrian, who said he wanted to discuss something with Albert, leaving Sophia and Millie alone in the kitchen.Millie said she would make Albert’s favorite food. With a slightly annoyed expression, Sophia chopped onions at Millie’s request, while Millie washed the vegetables, humming softly.“Sophie, how’s your relationship with Albert lately? Has there been any progress?” Millie asked.Sophia rubbed her watery eyes with the back of her hand before answering, “It’s fine,” she replied vaguely.Millie glanced at her for a moment. “What do you mean by ‘fin
Sophia couldn’t comprehend how any of this was really happening.Albert, who had been gone for nearly two weeks, suddenly returned, bringing his parents along with him. Their issues weren’t even resolved yet, and now Sophia had to face her in-laws.Was this Albert’s way of making amends for disappearing without a word? Using his parents as a shield? But for what purpose? Because if anything, it only made Sophia angrier and less likely to forgive him.“Where have you been?” Sophia hissed softly, asking Albert, who was preparing drinks in the kitchen for the two people waiting for them in the living room.Albert turned to look at Sophia. There were fain
Albert unconsciously imagined the woman in front of him as Sophia. Wearing a short towel wrapped around her chest, revealing those tempting, soft curves to the eyes of a man who would look at her with hunger. But Albert knew that the Sophia he knew would never do this. That night, when he saw Sophia crying as she tried to cover herself from his gaze, Albert had felt utterly devastated. The pain so evident in her eyes… it had made Albert furious. Furious at whoever had caused Sophia to become like that. But wasn’t he the prime suspect?Albert was so lost in his thoughts of Sophia that he almost forgot about the woman in front of him. She had now removed the towel wrapped around her body, leaving herself completely bare as she sank to her knees before him.Alb
