“See? How hard was that?” Grandma Joan scolded Steve as they walked downstairs.
All he did was smile, of course when he came downstairs to invite her upstairs, he didn’t tell her there was something wrong with Carla, he only asked her to help him persuade Carla to go out with him tomorrow and she agreed but not without scolding.
“Thank you, grandma.” He said cheekily.
“Tsk, you this child. It would be best if you were bolder. You are a man after all.”
“I will change grandma. I have to go home now, it’s getting really late.”
“Okay, hurry up. Drive safely.” She waved him away as he walked out of their home.
The moment Steve was out the front door, he turned and looked up at the window of the dark room on the first floor which was no doubt Carla’s room. The smile on his face no longer existed, his face now cold and chilling, as he pulled his phone from his pocket and dialed a number, it was picked up after the first ring.
“Find out what happened to Carla in the capital. I want to know everything about it.”
“Yes sir.” The person on the other side replied.
With that, he hung up. If he guessed right, it seemed she was being threatened, but by who? And with what? He didn’t know but whoever it was, he or she had better hide well, because if he finds them out. They would pay for hurting her. With that thought, he got into his car and drove off.
Hours later….
In a room somewhere far in the capital. It was the early hours of the morning, the city was waking up and a man in nothing but dark jean pants stood barefooted by the floor-to-ceiling glass window, staring down at the empty streets with bright neon lights, it was the darkest part of the morning, just before dawn and the street lights were shining the brightest. The weather was cooling but in the suite on the 22nd floor where he was, a room heater was working tirelessly, heating up the room and making its inhabitants very comfortable.
He stirred the glass of champagne in his hand absentmindedly, his eyes dazed as if lost in thought. His stern but handsome face blended a contrast to his blond hair giving the tsundere boyfriend look. He was none other than Zak Redding, Carla’s ex.
The woman, Zappy, who had been sleeping on the king-sized bed behind him stirred and soon woke up when she saw she was the only one left in bed. She sat up, adjusting the edge of the white shirt she had on, to see him standing motionless by the glass plane. She smiled and got out of bed letting the oversized white shirt fall all the way to her thigh as she came to him and hugged him from behind, running her hands over his bare chest.
“Baby.” She cooed, “You’re up so early. What are you thinking about?”
Zak, as if coming back to his senses, glanced behind him, and drank a large gulp of his champagne before turning around and grabbing the girl’s waist, kissing her as he pinned her on the glass plane, his hand traveling up her exposed thigh, while the woman clung unto him.
He bit her earlobes and as if he remembered something displeasing he frowned and whispered, “So I heard Carla left town and you never thought to tell me.”
The woman froze, waking up from her stupor almost immediately, “I… I thought you didn’t care what she did anymore. After all, you are done with her right?” She looked up at him.
Zak stepped back, “I’m done with her? When did I tell you that?”
The woman was stunned, “But you broke up with her and ruined her career, what else is there to care about?”
“She hasn’t come groveling at my feet begging me to take her back. So how can I be done with her? She hasn’t come to promise to do anything as long as I just let her live. She still seems to have a lot of pride seeing she can still scold me on the phone…”
“You called her?” The woman was surprised.
“Otherwise? How else would I find that she wasn’t even here anymore? Hera Diamonds sent a letter to her house but found she was out of town, which was when I found out.” He approached her and laid his hands on her waist as if to cajole her, “Remember, I promised to give that endorsement to you. If Carla doesn’t sign the contract of termination, how then am I supposed to give you the endorsement?”
“I’m so sorry baby. I thought a woman like her was not worth thinking about, after all, she lost everything. Isn’t it better for her to run away?”
Zak felt irritated again, “Carla lost everything? Do you think her rising to the top is dependent on me alone? Carla has real talent and she knows what she wants. She has never asked me for anything, all I gave her is just like a bonus. If I hadn’t insisted on helping her back then, do you think I would have a say in all her endorsements now? She can’t totally fall if I do not take grasp of her and everything about her, including her mental state, only then will she grovel and beg.” He smiled maniacally in a way that made the woman shiver.
Only he knew what Carla was like when he met her seven years ago. She was so full of energy, and confidence. It was evident that she was destined to excel in this career, she was born a model and he had only tagged along. He needed to crush that mentality of hers, make her believe the future was bleak, make her believe that she could be nothing without him, only then..., only then would she bow to him.
That stupid therapist, how dare she let Carla leave town under her nose? It seemed she was really incompetent. How does he get Carla a new therapist now that she is out of town? He wondered with his brow crunched.
“Ba…by,” Zappy wrapped her arms around his neck and pulled him close, gaining his attention, “I know, but you have me, I can grovel at your feet and do whatever you want, of what use a stupid and stubborn woman who doesn’t know your worth?”
Who cares about Carla’s strength and talent in modeling after all, with all her professionalism, she, Zappy, still stole her boyfriend and occupied all her positions with so little effort. What talent could she possibly have?
Zappy didn’t believe a word of what Zak said about Carla, call it jealousy or anything, she didn’t care. She saw Carla as nothing but a jumping clown beautified by Zak’s wealth. Give her the same opportunity and she was sure she would excel even better than Carla in the industry and that was why she made a move on Zak. She was tired of seeing people love and respect Carla. She was tired of feeling jealous of Carla without being able to do anything to change her own situation.
But look now, who is laughing last?
“I bet I even taste way better than her.” She whispered the last part but Zak heard anyway.
“How can I know, when she’s never given me a taste.” He blurted out angrily. This was the most annoying part of the entire story with Carla. The bitch didn’t even let him touch her.
Zappy’s eyes widened in shock and disbelief.
“You don’t believe me? You think I’m lying?” Zak gritted his teeth. This was the most insulting part of his life. He was a certified playboy, even though he didn’t play recklessly as other men played. He was one and he played wisely, making sure he walked out of every relationship when he was done playing without a single blemish or stain, making him the most sorted-out bachelor in the city but Carla that bitch!
He gave that bitch everything hoping to lure her to bed, and waited patiently for seven years to convince her that he was real but in the end, the more he gave her the more she refused sexual relationships and even tried to tarnish his pure image.
What did she say her excuse for refusing to let him touch her was? Oh right, she had said, if she did, then others would think she got all her endorsement through unspoken rules.
Now that he thought of it, he wasn’t even sure who played who. Maybe she was just pretending to be kind and obedient when they were together while planning to get all he offered her for free. Maybe she knew he was cheating on her from the start and had planned to catch him, ruin his reputation, and dump him. Well, look how that turned out for her now. He smiled wickedly.
Just wait Carla, when I’m done with you…
“No Zak, I am just shocked,” Zappy replied, no wonder she was able to get Zak with such a little seduction. That girl allowed a rich gold master like Zak to roam around without tying him under her skirt? She’s so stupid.
“It’s the truth or else why would I waste my time on a thing like her for so long. I invested seven years of my time and resources on that girl and I got nothing in exchange. She dares to proclaim me as a cheater and dump me? We’ll see who dumps who when I’m done.” Zak hissed.
“So you still want her,” Zappy stated with a frown, her hands falling from his neck to her side.
“Just as a plaything. She has to pay, Zappy, and I’m going to make sure she does. When I’m done with her, you will be so pleased with me.”
Zappy laughed and clung to Zak again even though she was not happy, she couldn’t displease her new gold master. “I can’t wait to see what you would make of her, my love.”
Zak kissed her in response then whispered to her, “Find me someone who knows her well in that town she ran to and have her excluded to the extent that she runs back here. I want her to come and beg me to take her back, then the show will begin.”
Zappy smiled, even though she didn’t like that Zak was still paying attention to Carla, she was extremely happy to see her suffer. “As your lordship pleases.” She giggled and kissed his jaw. Zak immediately captured her lips and the make-out session resumed.
Steve woke up bright and early, excited about the day, he went to the kitchen of his small bungalow house and got busy making various dishes for the picnic ‘date’, he planned to take Carla on. He had an apron tied around his waist with the sleeve of his white shirt pulled up to his elbow and yes, he was in a corporate outfit today, a white shirt on gray suit pants. He knew Carla liked ambitious and official-looking men, so he was opting for that look today, hopefully, she would be impressed with him enough to consider dating him. He prepared the various dishes diligently according to Carla’s taste, a taste he had quietly gotten accustomed to in the past seven years of befriending her grandma and practicing under her guidance.During those seven years, what they majorly talked about most was Carla, her likes, her dislikes, and even her favorite foods. He took time learning how to make her favorite dishes and now when he makes them, they are almost similar to the one made by her grand
Carla on the other hand was still in deep sleep, she was mentally and emotionally drained but her sleep wasn’t so smooth, she woke most of the time from panic as she had nightmares of Zak coming after her and her grandmother falling ill from hearing of all her scandals. Sometimes she dreamt that anti-fans came to her home scolding her and beating her up. She woke up suddenly with sweat over her brows, her heart pounding fast. This was the third time she had woken up from a nightmare while sleeping, before she could breathe a sigh of relief, her door resounded with a banging knock and her nerves tensed almost immediately as she wondered if she was still dreaming or if the nightmares were becoming a reality. But she soon heard her grandma’s voice, “Carla, Steve is here to take you out!!!” Grandma Joan yelled from behind the door hoping to wake up the ‘still sleeping’ Carla. Carla heaved a sigh of relief before sitting on her bed. She remembered that no one knew that she was out of to
“We’re going to the beach first? Are there more delicacies there?” She asked this time with enthusiasm and Steve nodded.“Tourists come here for the rare delicacies.”“Since when did our small town have so many delicacies?” Carla asked in wonder, it’s just been seven years since she left, why does it sound like it’s been twenty or thirty years since she last lived here?“Well, some classmates came back to settle in the village since it became a tourist town and they learned a few things that have benefited the town,” Steve explained.“O….h,” Carla said and her mood dampened.Their classmates. She had seen and met a few while pursuing her career in the capital. Some had been very nice to her, and some made her feel like she owed them something. However they had reacted to her, the truth remained one thing, many classmates followed her social media account and knew of her situation better than anyone else. If she saw them or tourists who knew her at the beach, what was she supposed to
True to her words, the bikinis in the corner were beautiful and were her perfect size, she immediately got excited and tried on various designs. The sales attendant was shocked at how these styles fit her so well. “Ma’am, you have a really good figure. Have you ever thought of being a model?”Carla stiffened at her word, the light in her eyes dimming as she suddenly remembered who she was. She fell silent for a few seconds, staring at the bikini she had just taken off before turning to the sales attendant. “I would go with the conservative one-piece swimsuit.” She said, now a little calmer, as she also returned the bikini she had earlier picked up with the plan of trying it on.The sales attendant was shocked at her sudden change of mood. She ran their conversation through her head twice to see if she said anything wrong, and when she couldn’t figure out what went wrong she asked her. “Is there a problem ma’am? Did I say something wrong?”“No, no, it’s fine. I just think it is best to
Steve sat in his car and watched Carla walk into her home, today can only be described in two words, A DISASTER. And Steve saying that, was an understatement. What exactly did they go to do at the beach? They walked, changed their clothes, and came back? Carla didn’t even wait for them to change back into their real clothes and had returned home in her one-piece swimsuit. It was barely twelve and they were back already, did being with him make her so uncomfortable? He wondered with a sigh. His eyes fell on the shopping bag in the rear seat and he wondered if he should follow her in and return it to her, but if he did, her grandmother would ask him how the ‘date’ went and why they returned so early. She would be really disappointed to know that he didn’t confess to Carla in the end but how was he to confess to a woman who cannot stand him.Steve rubbed his forehead in frustration before he saw the picnic basket.Just this morning he had been so excited, making all her favorite food. The days went by so fast, with Steve not showing up at Carla’s home and Carla not even remembering that a Steve had visited and asked her out the day after her arrival. But she didn’t really have the luxury to think about him as her days were tormented by anxiety and fear. She couldn’t sleep well at night as she had nightmares of Zak finding her and anti-fans beating her up. By the end of the first week, she had lost weight from lack of sleep, had terrible eye bags, and had begun to feel jumpy at the slightest sound, including the sound of the doorbell. Her health was deteriorating, as she slowly fell into depression and no one knew, as she even shut her doors and stayed away from her grandmother who she was keeping her so-called secret from. But of course, her grandma knew something was wrong, she just didn’t know what it was, and neither did she notice it was a problem with her granddaughter. A phone rang continuously in a dimly lit office but no one picked it up. The room was trashed with papers and documents lying all over the floor, broken glass, and a few spots of dark liquid, which seemed like blood were in various places. The window blinds were pulled down and only a dim table lamp was lit on the table. The darkness concealed the face of the man who sat majestically on a sofa with his legs crossed and his bodyguards, who stood around him stared at another man who lay, sprawling on the floor, coughing continuously, in disgust. The man’s face was visibly beaten blue black and drops of blood were at the corner of his lips. His once expensive-looking striped shirt was now dirty and wrinkled, his hair was wet with a bright red liquid. He lay there, on the floor, breathing heavily as if he would pass out at any moment. The moment the phone rang again, he raised his head, his dull eyes shining as if he had regained hope. He looked in the direction where it was, on the flo
Carla first appeared in Terry’s office two months ago, when her scandal had just begun, and he must say he was very shocked that not just any celebrity came to him but the one he hated so much and didn’t want to help. When she came and complained of severe depression, he felt. Well, good for you. He hoped she committed suicide fast so that one would be rid of her and organizations that had used her as their ambassadors would be able to wash off its stains. These thoughts were unbecoming of a psychologist but he had it anyway and he was not ready to pretend he didn’t have it. Why was this?Carla was once a glorified celebrity model, everyone admired her works and most especially her story, of which two were the most inspiring; the first was the story of her leaving her backward village to pursue her dream, despite all odds and the second was the story of how she believed in Hera diamond’s CEO when no one did, making her rise to fame by endorsing her products. She was tagged as a bless
