THIRD PERSON'S POV

Maria Greenwood rarely gambled wrong. She was always on the winning side. She also knew she would work hard to reach her goal. She was determined and hardworking, which was why she was such a great asset to the warriors in Moonlight pack.

When she had first expressed her desire to become Luna to her squadmates, no one had refuted her. They knew there was no stronger woman in the pack.

She was the topic of discussion this morning at one of the borders of the pack. The guards there were bored. Nothing ever happened out there, but they still took no chances.

“Does anyone here think Maria will actually come back to the pack?“ One of them said, and another sneered.

“Come back? She took the easiest way out. She's a coward, and if she knows what's good for her, she won't show her face around here anymore.“

“I don't think she ran away, though. She was likely captured and can't find her way home anymore.“

“Shut up, Ted. Everyone knows you like her. I would have been more su

Luna Cecilia had a son. Kane. He was set to become the next Alpha.“Luna Cecilia, you have a son.“ I had told her, and her eyes darkened.“Kane might be my biological son, but he is no son of mine. He's going to grow up to take after his father. I want nothing to do with him.“I had been too young to know what she was talking about, but I had never been too comfortable to take on another person's position. Most importantly, I never wanted to take over for anyone. I wanted to find my own people. So one day I asked her where I came from, and she had no answer for me.We started spending a lot of time together until one night, I had been sleeping after we had our evening tea. Someone came into the room and snatched me off the soft bed and yanked the covers from me. “What's going on? How dare you come

LUCAS' POVIt was an uneventful day at work. One of those days when everything simply blurred into each other. The highlight of it was a run in the pack with Cole and my Gamma, Lane. Lane had left the pack about ten years ago to go mind his mother's pack until the rightful heir was old enough to take over.I was glad to see that he hadn't changed at all. He was still the same fun-loving boy who had left the pack. He was only two months younger than I am, but he behaved like a fifteen-year-old boy. His position was not very important to the pack, so he could be away for as long as he wished. Two days ago, he had telephoned when Cole and I were busy at work.“Yo, Luke!“ The sound of his voice was unmistakable, and I had automatically groaned. “Don't call me that, Lane. I'm the Alpha now.“ I had said for Cole's benefit. He had rolled his eyes in exasperation too. Lane has always been insufferable like that.“I know, Luke. If I don't call you that, you'll forget your mother's nickname f

ARIA'S POVLuna Cecilia has been on my mind for a while. I used to think that she had been harsh on her only son before I learned that her husband was using her son against the both of them.I know it's st*pid to think this way, but I found myself thinking about Lucas and if he would ever do something like that to me. Brielle had noticed my pensive mood.“Luna, I thought you would be more cheered seeing as you have a whole brother now.“ She teased.“I have something on my mind.“ I had confessed to her. “First, how important is it for a Luna to have heirs?““Oh!“ Her eyes had sparkled with such delight. “It's a thing of joy. To us pack members, it is an assurance that the pack will still live on. It's a sign of continuity, of permanence, and of relevance.““Oh. What if a Luna is unable to give birth?““I have never heard of such a Luna. However, I think the Luna will be impeached. It all depends on the Alpha and how important it is to him to have an heir.““I see.““Why? Why are you a

THIRD PERSON'S POVThree days later, Maria could no longer take it anymore. She had to know what would happen next. The suspense was driving her crazy. She had already confirmed that Aria had lived here. She had slowly built a good connection with her usual maid. She had left immediately after she had first confirmed that Aria lived there. The next day, she had asked her about her physical appearance. Over her next six meals, she had confirmed, and to her utter delight, the maid didn't seem to like Aria either. No one would voluntarily tell a stranger about her friend. "I don't know what spell she has them all under, but I'm going to shatter it if it's the last thing I do." Maria had made herself delusional enough to think that she was a heroine. That she was Moonlight pack's savior. Lucas wouldn't be able to resist me once the veil is off.The idea of Lucas and the whole pack being indebted to her had her so excited that she could barely sleep. "They're all going to be my slaves. THIRD PERSON'S POV Back in the Moonlight Pack, Alpha Lucas and Luna Aria were back in their honeymoon phase. They couldn't keep their hands off each other. Luna Aria was more attentive to her Alpha, and she had slowly let go of the pain and resentment she had been holding on to.Gamma Lane was the newest addition to the pack, but it was like he had never left it. He had blended in seamlessly with the group. Luna Aria was now his closest friend, much to the chagrin of the Alpha."I can't explain it," she had said to her husband after he pouted that she was spending all her free time with the handsome, charming Gamma. "It's like something I never knew I needed. He feels right for my soul.""I still don't like it." "No one's ever going to replace you. No one. Without you, baby, I'm nothing."Even her first friend in the pack had complained. "It's like I don't exist to you anymore." To rectify this, she was now having dinner twice a week with Cole and Brielle while the Alpha and Gamma w

THIRD PERSON POVMaria thought that there was no harm in negotiating the deal she had opened. She had no doubt that it would work."Let me quickly add something to the deal."Alpha Kane laughed. It was a short, wicked sound that sent shivers down her spine. She was not a quitter, she would see it through. "There is no deal, lady. You're alive because I say so, do you understand? Think thrice before you make any demand.""Thank you for your generosity. I want to be free to roam the grounds. I'm not so much a prisoner now, am I? I can assure you that I have no intention of going anywhere."That was fair enough, Kane decided. He could always kill her if she got on his nerves."You can do anything you want." He said."Thank you, my Alpha." She left in barely veiled excitement. She was taken to another room. This one was more suited to her needs. The bathroom was modern, and there were fresh clothes in the closet. She quickly had her bath and scoffed down the meal that was delivered to he

LUCAS' POV"What are you doing?" Aria asked and I jumped. "Sh*t, I thought you were sleeping." I whispered. "Why aren't you sleeping, baby?""I was," she shot me a glare. "Until you decided to stop moving around on the bed."Sorry, baby. I was going to grab a drink." I was going to sneak out of bed to answer the call I had been waiting all morning for. "Better not wake me when you come back." She warned and gave her a small smile. I made sure she had fallen back asleep and shut the door after me. I went downstairs and faced the door so I could tell if she was coming down.I dialed the number that had been disturbing my sleep."How come you're just calling now, b*tch?" I spat once he picked the call."Calm down, Alpha. I had just gotten the information, and I wanted to tell you immediately." Roy, Lane's brother, drawled. I should have known he's the same as his big brother. A genius but a very unserious one. He never takes anything seriously. Not even when I tell him it's important.

ARIA'S POV Something is going on in the pack, I decided. Brielle has been acting shady for a while now, and I can't honestly point out when she started acting up."What's going on, Brielle? You've never been this distracted.""I'm sorry. Cole was telling me something.""Oh. You know you can talk to me about anything, right?""I know.""So talk to me. You've always been there for me. Let me do this for you, right? I feel like I'm always burdening you with my problems, and I never ask you about yours. I know how selfish that sounds now.""Aria, you're the last person to claim to be selfish. I can't bear to burden you with any more when I know how much work it is to deal with the pack."It is hard work to constantly shut out other people's feelings and emotions. Most times, I have to go see what's bothering someone like that, but that's still not an excuse to neglect my friend."It's not too much at all, and you know how much I enjoy doing it. So p

THIRD PERSON'S POV Alpha Lucas stood still for a moment, trying to make sense of everything. His wolf was threatening to come out and destroy everything in sight, but he stood still and let the anger wash over him. He was going to freaking end everyone who had a hand in this. First, he walked mechanically through the house as if he were a stranger. He was looking at it like he wanted to pick out every piece of detail. His wife's scent was still in here. There was a second and third scent. The second scent was a completely foreign one, while the third one was so faint that he thought he was imagining it. But he was not. Maria had been in here, that b*tch! He stopped when he got to the kitchen. She had been cooking! Everything was laid out in perfect order except for the water that had boiled over and the soggy pasta. He froze at the sight and again forced his wolf to stay put. She had been cooking for him, and she had been taken. The only thing that would save Maria from his wrath w

ARIA'S POV The last thing I remember was sitting in the kitchen trying to fix myself something. The next thing that happened was still elusive. Brielle had offered to stay the night, and I had refused her. "My husband takes up Cole's day, so he's unable to see his wife. I can't do that to him tonight too." She had laughed but had agreed with me. She knew I was right. It was important for all couples to have some alone time together at the end of each day."If you say so. Just promise me you'll be okay. Cole told me something earlier about Gamma Lane finding a lead.""I guess he'll tell me about it when he comes back.""I can stay with you till then.""No. Go fix yourself something to eat. Your husband's got to be tired after a long day at work chasing leads.""You're right." She got to her feet and gathered all the card games she had brought with her. "I should go cook for my husband. I'll see you tomorrow, Luna.""Thank you for your help.""You know I'm down to hang out with you a

LUCAS' POV Aria has refused to leave the house. She won't be persuaded. On the second day, I had told her that her security details would multiply. She simply looked at me like I was insane."I'm not walking around with ten men.""I just want you to continue with your normal life. Don't you think the pack members are going to suspect that something is going on when you refuse to make an appearance?""Who knows? They might not even notice." She brushed me off and went into the bathroom."Not notice? Are you kidding me?" I had followed her into the bathroom, where I found her just staring in the mirror, tears in her eyes."Baby, I'm sorry I raised my voice.""No, it's not you. I just don't feel safe outside. I feel like I'm being hunted. I don't want to feel like this anymore. I hate that he can still make me feel this way." Her outburst had been expected, and in a way, I welcomed it because then I knew what she was really feeling."Come here," I had rocked her to sleep. She had drifte

ARIA'S POV I woke up slowly. Last night came slowly to me in a rush, and my lips stretched in a satisfied smile. My body was pleasantly sore in all the right places. I stretched my hand to find the other side of the bed cold. He had to be downstairs. I brushed my teeth and put on my robe before going downstairs. I stopped when I found Brielle lounging on my couch. "Luna, you're up.""Yes, I am. Am I dreaming, or are we in an alternate universe where we're married?"She threw her head back in laughter. "I would like that very much.""I felt you might." I laughed too. "But seriously, what's going on?""The Alpha had to go to the pack house. There was something urgent going on.""Oh?" My curiosity was piqued. "Do you know what?""I don't know either. Someone came to get Cole. He left me in bed before he told me to come stay with you. I think it's something serious. There are like a dozen guards outside right now.""Are you serious?""Dead serious.""I must have been more exhausted than

LUCAS' POVA loud banging on the front door woke me up, and I scowled. Who the hell would interrupt my sleep? I looked around, and it was already morning. Aria had high desire last night and who was I to deny my woman of anything?I looked at her as she stirred briefly. I would kill someone if she wakes up. Thankfully, she settled back on her side and slept off again. The banging was louder now, and it finally kicked me into action. No one would dare to interrupt me if it wasn't an emergency. I didn't step out of the house all day yesterday, and there was no call for me.I threw on my discarded jeans and rushed downstairs. It was Victor, Aria's personal bodyguard. I would be worried about her if she weren't upstairs, sleeping soundly.“Good morning, Alpha.““What's going on, Victor?“ It better be something very important.“The Beta said to get you now.““What the hell? What is he doing in the pack house at this time of the morning?““He was woken up too.““By whom?““A guard, Alpha. I

  • HER SECOND CHANCE MATE   CHAPTER SEVENTY-FOUR

THIRD PERSON'S POVThe next evening, Alpha Kane and Maria shared a glass of wine in his garden. He marveled at how well-kept the flowers were. He couldn't remember the last time he was there.“I could spend the rest of my life in here.“ She said, breaking the silence.“Except we can't.“ He chuckled. “You have responsibilities. You're going to be their savior, remember?““You're right.“ She sipped her wine and admired the flowers. He took that time to admire her. Her beauty was not something you could take in at once. Why anyone would choose Aria over her was still something he couldn't yet comprehend. Maybe Aria truly had them under a spell. He laughed. Aria was incapable of doing anything. It had to be that the Alpha was just st*pid. He glanced away before his staring would become obvious or uncomfortable. In another life, she was the type of woman he would have pursued. She had the same qualities that had drawn him to Lori. Lori was smart and ambitious. Same as Maria. The only diffe

THIRD PERSON'S POV“We have to hit her in a way she won't be able to recover from. Remove her permanently and take over.“ Maria said.“It has to be a clean job. Done in a way that she can't go back and he can't come for her.““Let's do that.“ They talked deep into the night and deliberated back and forth on their plans.“I'll forever be in your debt if we're able to pull this through.“ Kane said. He meant it, too. He didn't let himself owe people often. He hated being in anyone's debt. However, this was a special case. Not only did Maria solve his council situation, but she also indirectly delivered to him fresh blood that was enough to calm his wolf down. To cap it all, she was going to deliver Aria to him on a golden platter. “We are going to be even, Alpha. Because of your collaboration, my long-time dream will be coming true. You're fulfilling my dreams for me.““I'm happy we can help each other out.“ He was even more impressed with her outlook. It was rare to find a woman who wa

THIRD PERSON'S POV Aria found herself partly excited and partly cautious. Brielle was supposed to be pained for her father, yet she was able to be excited for a night out with her. There was something she was missing.Lucas had come with her. He had been so sweet and attentive to her that she felt seen. "Do you think you'll be able to go out? I don't want you to do anything you don't want to do." He was saying to her now."Don't worry, Lucas. I'm going to be fine. I'm trying to demystify today, right?""Still, if you do not feel like going out, we can stay home and watch something on TV. We can even watch that horrible series you like so much." She laughed. Aria had been trying to get him to watch Twilight with her for a while now. Unsuccessfully. He staunchly refused to watch something that had so grossly misrepresented their kind. It shows how much he cared for her well-being."Honestly, I'm okay." She stopped in front of him. He was perched on the edge of their bed as he watched
