CH29: Hail (Abby)

I returned home to my mom later that day and found her in her office, scrolling through old photos from her travel. My mom always kept plants in the house, and I never understood exactly how she kept them so lively in our climate with the harsh weather mainly cold and wet. The plants were always lively and colorful - cheery, even - and I was glad that my mom had a hobby like that, especially now that my dad was gone.

“Mama,” I said as I walked through the door.

She turned in her large swivel chair and smiled at me, “How was your night out?”

“I enjoyed it,” I smiled back at her. Finally, a truth I could tell her, even if she didn’t know the whole thing.

“Remind me what friend it was that you spent the night at?” Her tone was still friendly but her face had become far more serious.
