Before entering back to the room filled with guests, Isabelle saw a person coming out of nowhere, blocking her way in. She startled for a second but immediately started to smile when she saw who was in front of her.
‘Oh, Ted, hello!’ she said softly and smiled a little embarrassed remembering Shawn’s words while they were dancing.
‘Congratulations, Isabelle...’ he said in a strange tone. The look in Ted’s eyes was a bit disturbing. ‘Thanks for the invitation to this important event...’
‘It's a pleasure to have you and your family here. Marie and Lucy went above and beyond to make it special for us and for all of the guests too,’ she added smiling. ‘I hope you are enjoying yourself...’
‘Oh yes, it’s quite… pleasant. I am sorry to have lost sight of you during these last months. I would have loved to see you again before taking this step...’ Ted finished drinking the champagne and stared at her insistently. He came even closer to Isabelle than he should have. ‘I found out what happened to your father, but before I could come to visit you, you were already here, at the Graysons’ villa…’
‘Yes,’ she replied, looking around for some kind of an escape from this situation without being rude, ‘they have been very nice to me and invited me here...’
‘Shawn especially, from what I've heard... At the party, you couldn’t look at him without feeling repulsion, and now... Your logic is a bit strange, dear Isabelle...’ he added trying to keep his balance.
Isabelle felt someone's hand on her shoulder and turned quickly, thinking it was Shawn. She faced Dr. Peter Jones. In the past few weeks, he had been away, at the ‘New York-Presbyterian Hospital’, to help an old friend organize the neurosurgery department and to hold some seminars. But he had promised Isabelle to attend her wedding, even for a little time. Seeing him hugging Isabelle, Ted mumbled something and then walked away.
‘Wow!!! You’re gorgeous!’ Peter said admiring her from head to toe. ‘You are one of the most beautiful brides I have ever seen,’ he added kissing her hand.
‘You’re exaggerating! Peter, I'm so glad you're here! Let's go find inside and find my husband. I have to warn him that he just lost the bet. You arrived just in time to make me a winner!’ Isabelle replied laughing.
‘I have literally a few seconds to say hello to your husband, but then I have to run to the hospital... Duty calls!’
They approached Shawn saying goodbye to Billy who was getting ready to go to the airport. Peter asked for a ride and Billy gladly accepted. Isabelle was sorry to see them go, especially Billy, who had been absolutely fantastic during that week. After Chris left the company, keeping the promise made to his wife, Billy had taken his new role very seriously. This meant traveling very often.
Marie, Chris, Lucy, and Shana joined their small group. They were what Marie had been calling ‘the extended family’, given what they had been through together the past weeks. Peter said goodbye to everyone, promising to call as soon as he had some free time, and went away with Billy.
After Billy and Peter's departure, it was Lucy's turn. The stressful week was beginning to get the better of her and she wanted to go home and rest. She was staying with Shana, so her granddaughter helped her to prepare.
‘My sweet girl, we will stay in touch, all right? And after your honeymoon, come and see me,’ Lucy said hugging her. ‘I am so happy for you... Seeing you with the man you love, married to him, it’s such a joy for this old heart,’ she added again and stroked Isabelle’s face.
‘You are so dear to me, Lucy. Never stop being my angel, even if we are not leaving in the same house anymore,’ Isabelle whispered kissing her old hands.
‘I’ll never stop, baby girl!’
Isabelle said goodbye to her and Shana. It was so strange to see Lucy leaving without her. There had never been a moment in her life, happy or sad, when Lucy hadn’t been next to her. And now, she was leaving her to go and stay on the other side of the city, in someone else’s house. She had to do something for Lucy, to show her all her and appreciation. Isabelle decided that when she got back from the honeymoon, she would go and see the lawyer. Once she will get the money, Isabelle would give half to Lucy. This was her money too, the payback for all those times she had been insulted by Andrew, that she defended her from her father, for all the times she had protected Isabelle and her dreams.
Marie approached Isabelle and took her aside. She wanted to say goodbye to her in private, away from everyone. Isabelle had become not only part of her family but part of her heart too.
‘What is it, Marie? Are you alright?’ Isabelle asked slightly worried.
‘Yes, sweetheart, I am. I’ve wanted to say goodbye since you and Shawn would be leaving soon. I am sorry to see you going away from this house, I got used to having you around.’
‘I will never be too far away to come and see you, you know this, right?’ Isabelle asked Marie, squeezing her hand to comfort her.
‘When you and Shawn get back from the honeymoon, come and see me at the foundation. I would like to work with you on a couple of projects very dear to my heart. I know you’ll love them too. What do you say?’
‘It’s a done deal!’ Isabelle exclaimed and the two women hugged each other.
After greeting everyone, Isabelle and Shawn got into the car and went to their love nest. She could not wait to be alone with her husband, to start their life together. Shawn took her in his arms and, as the tradition requested, he carried his bride over the threshold. Once inside the house, instead of letting her down, he held her tighter, kissing her gently. Their first kiss in their new house.
‘Welcome to our sweet home, Mrs. Grayson!’ he whispered, sending shivers down her spine.
Shawn's eyes captured hers, and Isabelle was able to read everything he was thinking, everything he wanted to do with her that night, and all the other nights they would spend together. Being in love with him made it so easy and what she saw was so passionate… Isabelle’s heart was beating so fast that she could hardly breathe or speak or even think for that matter.
‘I love you! I wish you could see how much...’
He interrupted her by slightly touching Isabelle's mouth with his. It was a brief gesture, but its simplicity touched her deep inside in a way she never thought was possible. And his words almost made her cry with joy.
‘I know it all so well, my love! I feel the same way too.’
Isabelle smiled and then looked around to see their home. She had never been there before. On the kitchen counter, there was a basket full of delicacies: different types of cheese, caviar, champagne, fruits, and dark chocolate, Isabelle's favorite. There was also an envelope with a greeting card, signed ‘The French Graysons’.
‘It’s from Richard, Christine, Frannie, and Diana,’ she said smiling and feeling nervous for no reason in particular. ‘With all our love. Bonne chance!’ Oh, so lovely of them!’
Shawn carried Isabelle's suitcase into the bedroom and then went back to his wife. She opened the box of chocolate and tasted one. She closed her eyes and savored it. Shawn took her in his arms and kissed her mouth slightly.
‘Exquisite!’ he whispered, touching Isabelle's mouth with the tip of his tongue. ‘Better than the wedding cake... Hmm… so much better because I can taste the chocolate directly from your lips.’
Isabelle smiled and felt the urge to abandon herself in his arms. But she wanted this time to be different from the other times she had made love to him. And she already knew what she had to do to make that night special for both of them. Shana had helped her find the right… outfit.
‘Shawn, sweetheart, just stay here and relax for a bit... I will be back in a second...’ she said in a very vague tone.
‘Where are you going, baby?’ he asked puzzled.
‘I have a surprise for you... Wait for me here, please,’ she added and after giving him a light kiss, she disappeared into the bedroom.
Shawn opened the champagne bottle and poured some into two glasses. Thinking about the night he was preparing to spend with Belle, he smiled, took off his jacket, and threw himself on the couch waiting for... his wife. She was not just a warm body, like the other women that he had been with, but she was also an intelligent, beautiful, wonderful woman and she was all his. He still could not get it into his head that he was married to Isabelle.
‘Love, I am waiting for you!’ he exclaimed looking towards their bedroom. ‘Do you need...’ But Shawn stopped when he saw Isabelle's pale face. ‘help...’
She was there, in the doorway. Isabelle was still a wonderful vision in ivory, but all the excitement from before had turned into... pain. She was holding in one hand an envelope and on the other, a couple of... photos. Her gaze was filled with painful, silent questions. She shook her head in total disbelief.‘Belle!’
When Isabelle opened the door, Marie just held her breath. The woman in front of her was extremely pale. The smile that lit her face earlier had been replaced by a gruesome mask of pain. Isabelle’s eyes were red from all the crying and she was walking around like a ghost. The wedding dress was gone and her old clothes, the ones she used to wear before, were back in.
She took the suitcase, closed the door, and followed Marie to the car where Chris was waiting for them. Marie told him the address and ask him to drove them there. The entire trip, he couldn't stop mumbling, counting the ways he was going to make Shawn pay for what he did to Isabelle.
This damn building… this damn apartment… Shawn pulled the car in front of the ‘crime scene’, Danielle’s house. The moment he set foot out of that infernal place; Shawn promised himself never to return again, not even for a simple visit. Danielle tried to play him and she almost had her way. He had an idea of how malicious, how vengeful she was, but by sending the photos to his wife, Danielle pushed this sick game to another level. This madness had to stop and she had to pay for all she had done to Belle and to him.
He didn’t want to talk to Danielle about what he had just seen. Her choices were hers alone. At least now things were clearer. And all Shawn wanted to do was to go home, to his wife, and try to fix everything before it would be too late. He put the cellphone in his pocket and ran towards the car. Finally, he had all the answers to all the questions. It was absolutely necessary to go back home to his Belle and show her that video. He got behind the wheel and before starting the engine, he began laughing like a mad man.
The intense light of the morning sun forced Isabelle to open her eyes. She had managed to doze off on the couch, but she was feeling more tired than before. The pregnancy she had just discovered was already showing off the first symptoms. This and the stress of the last days were making her feel so sluggish, so worn-out.A lot of emotions and mixed feelings took over her mind and without trying too much, she remembered what happened the night before. The thought of Shawn filled her heart with so much pain and
Without waiting to be invited in, Shawn slipped into the apartment. Isabelle couldn’t believe her eyes. He was truly there, incredibly gorgeous, showing no signs of... pain, suffering, or regret for what he had done to her. No, nothing of the sort. Shawn was as beautiful as ever, charming as a snake looking well-rested and his scent started to torment all her senses.
Isabelle found it hard to breathe. Why wasn’t her body listening to her head? Why wasn’t she able to pull away from his lethal embrace? Shawn didn’t love her, he simply wanted to show her that he still had control over her. He wanted to show her that he could snap his fingers and she would fall at his feet. God, how she wanted to abandon herself in his arms and stop hurting... How she wanted him to tell him everything about the baby, to tell him that she can live without him...
Isabelle's cheeks changed color. He smiled. Even now, after all this time, she was getting embarrassed easily whenever he would get pretty… aroused. She was his woman; he had done things with her that he hadn’t done with another woman. Shawn had told her things about him that others didn’t know. Isabelle was the keeper of his life. Unfortunately, their sexual life suffered a slight change since she had the baby. He knew it would happen, he knew that Isabelle's hormonal swings could lead to this point, but it was so difficult being next to her and not making love to her. Every night he was sleeping beside her, holding her in his arms, kissing her, caressing her, speaking to her softly, but that was about it. Between the two of them, there was a delightfully painful game of coddling, caress
“Marie, sweetie...” Chris's voice brought her back to reality. Their boys were calling the old couple to join them on the lawn. Rosa and Julia, the new cook, had already gone out onto the terrace and brought fresh lemonade for everyone.“Where were you just now?” Chris asked curiously.“I was taking a walk amongst our memories,” she replied in her usual simplicity.“I hope you relieved only the good ones,” Chris added. The look in her eyes and the bright smile on her lips made him understand understood that she just took a walk amongst some wonderful memories. He kissed her hand and helped her get up from her chair.“Come on, let's join our kids and talk to them a little before dinner. Let’s hear what are their plans for the holidays.”&n
On Villa Mimosa’s terrace, Marie and Christopher were sitting, chatting, and looking at the adults and children who were laughing, talking, and playing on the lawn and in the small treehouse. The image of the Grayson Trio, with their spouses and children, made Marie smile proudly.“Three generations of Grayson under the same roof and at the same time...” she whispered trying to hold back the tears. Chris pulled her lightly towards him and kissed her temple. Like his wife, Chris too was very happy to have everyone there with them. The opportunities were extremely rare, especially those of seeing Richard, Christine, and the girls back to the States for a vacation. But after all that had happened at Audrey's birth, all of them had started to appreciate their family time much m
The prison… This was a very scary place, but Isabelle took a deep breath and gather all her courage. She was determined to find out who Nathaniel Stevens really was: a lost soul or the devil himself. Once she would receive the answers she was looking for, Isabelle will finally close this chapter of her life or help him change. Her baby girl was about to come into this world and she wanted to welcome her by closing all the wounds left open and still bleeding: the old ones made by her father and the new ones caused by Nathaniel Stevens. Shawn's love had been her cure. He had given her peace of mind and had helped her trust people again, but Shawn had been able to cure the pain caused by her father only partially. The rest was up to her. &nbs
“Never!” He got up and stood in front of her. Shawn’s expression was harsh, cold. His eyes had that icy look that she had seen so many times. Isabelle had expected Shawn's reaction, she was prepared for it. She took a deep breath and tried to stay calm while talking to him.“Shawn, please... I have to know...”“Know what, Isabelle? What in the world can this psychopath tell you? Why are you allowing him to keep hurting you over and over again?”“Sweetheart, you know how much I loved my father. Before that fatal night, flaws and all, he was my hero. After he got sick, I’ve started noticing a certain behavior, finding out things about him that were hurtful. His words to me were like sharp knives through my heart.” Isabelle took a deep breath. She won’t cry, otherwise, Shawn wou
Sitting in the armchair, Isabelle was looking with sadness outside of the window. She hadn’t been able to sleep much that night, so carefully, without waking Shawn up, she got out of bed and went into the living room. She needed to think about what she had discovered since the day she went to the hospital to see Stephie. As much as she had tried to convince herself that it wasn’t true, the facts were very clear. Nathaniel Stevens was her half-brother. That merciless man that all of them had seen and known, that monster, was her father’s son. From beyond the grave, her father had managed to hurt her once more. Months had passed since she last thought of her father. Her last memory of him was a very unhappy one. But life rewarded her and Isabelle was no longer alone. She was no longer weak.
“I love you and I’ll never leave your side again. Ever!” He smiled at her blank, incredulous expression, then lowered his face to hers and sipped the tears off her cheeks.“I was ready to abandon the road to love because I thought that it had nothing to do with me. I couldn’t see what was in front of me because of my stubbornness or perhaps because of my fear of getting hurt again. So, I ignored all the signs and raised a wall between me and the entire world. Then you came and the world stopped turning for a moment. When I finally saw who you were, I felt like I was breathing for the first time. I felt my heart finally beating the right way when I saw you smiling when I looked you in the eyes. The second after, my wall was torn down by you, by your sweetness, by your love and our souls became one.”“Billy...” she whispered. “How can you say this after eve
“I want to help you and Stephie, so let me know what would you like me to do,” she replied with a sweet smile on her lips.“It’s not about me at all, it’s about Stephie only. Belle, after the doctor is going to sign her discharge, Stephie’s going to need all the psychological support in the world. She’s going to need a friend, a person who can understand what’s really going on with her. You two have been tagged by the same psychopath, so you have something in common. As much as I’ve tried, I can’t calm her down, I can't bring her back to me all by myself. For the first time in a long time, whatever I say or do to her, falls flat. She struggles to open up to me and this thing kills me slowly. Stephie keeps it all inside and she keeps pushing me away while the pain is consuming her from inside out. I can’t accept this, especially now that...”“Now that...?” Shawn added approaching his cou
It was still raining. Billy looked beyond his own reflection in the window out into the dark, forlorn night. Stephanie had a very rough night, waking up several times. She couldn’t stop crying, so the nurses had to give her a sedative to calm her down and allow her body to start recovering from the shock she went through. Billy didn’t sleep or move from her bedside. He couldn’t let go of her hand or take his eyes off her. Just the thought of leaving her for one second was too much. What Stephanie had experienced was extremely painful and Billy was afraid she might never recover from it. But the doctor said that in time love, care, attention will cure her spirit and her mind. And the baby… The news that she was pregnant, that the baby was alright, should’ve been a reason enough
