AMBER.

“Did I satisfy you?” He asked in a gentle tone. I was still seated on his lap, straddling him as we hugged each other. “I’m sorry. I know this is not how you expected our first time.”

“What are you saying sorry for?” I tilted my head up and found him looking at me. “That was more than what I expected. It was so much more beautiful…”

His hand cupped my cheek before brushing his thumb against my skin. “I can do better next time.”

“Me, too.” I smiled at him. “I know every time will be just as perfect as it should be.”

“Thank you for waiting for me…” His eyes watered, and my words got stuck in my throat.

I was just staring at him. His vulnerability caught me off guard again, and I didn’t know how to react to the sincerity of his words.

“I can’t move to the bed. Will you be okay sleeping on the floor?” His words snapped me back to my senses.

I nodded, smiling before hugging him again.

“I can tell you to sleep on the bed, and you’ll be more comfortable there, but I want to sleep b

AMBER.“Once you’re ready to tell me, I’m just here.”“But I can tell you some things.” He raised his gaze and met my eyes again. I nodded.“Do you want to sit on my lap?” “Am I not pressing on your thighs?”“A bit, but I guess it’s better that I feel something than nothing.”“Maybe it’s not good…”“The bones on my thighs are fine. It’s my spine at the back that got hit.”I nodded.“So?” He tapped his thighs and smiled at me.“I would love to. And in case your cock wants some warmth, I’m a willing shelter.”“Amber!” A growl ripped from his throat, and it made me giggle while climbing back onto his lap. My emotions were all over the place. One moment I wanted to cry, and the next, I was giggling. But despite that, one thing was for sure: I had never been this happy. This was more than the happiness I felt when Zach confessed his feelings and kissed me for the first time. “Okay, okay. I’ll behave.”“You should, or we’ll end up fucking instead of catching up.”“Which is not a bad ide

AMBER.I had no idea how many kisses Zach had placed on the top of my head as we lay down on the blanket. He was lying on his back with his arm as my pillow while I was on my side, facing and hugging him. But I wasn’t complaining. I was, in fact, happily drowning in it. We talked about the last two years. I told him I went back to school. I went to university and took up Occupational Therapy as my course. “I’ve heard about it but never dared to ask anyone. Was it because of me that you took this course?” He asked. Before our accident, I had already planned not to continue my studies. I would focus on helping him with his pack once I became his Luna. But without him, I had no future to look forward to. I nodded in response before adding, “I was hoping you’d get to walk soon, but if not, I wanted to be prepared to help you adjust to your condition. But it seems you are already adjusting well.”His hand on my arm rubbed my skin gently. “Every day is still a challenge. Physically, I’m

Continuation of Flashback from the previous chapter.ZACH's POV.“Step down as an Alpha so we don’t need to have further discussion. I’m sure your father will be willing to take back his pack. Or give it to your Beta.”“Can you hear yourself, Alpha Grant?” I scoffed. “It’s my pack. It is not a toy that I can simply hand to anyone because I can no longer play with it.” “Did you forget what’s on the list of what makes a shifter eligible to be an Alpha?”“Of course I do! And nothing states in there that any physical disability would prohibit anyone from being an Alpha!”“Section Three, line twenty-three. An Alpha must be physically capable of protecting his pack or any shifters in times of danger, through but not limited to physical combat, transporting, and eliminating the enemy, and I could go on and on in this section.”“I can protect my pack!”They laughed, and I was starting to think I would lose my pack by the time they dismissed me. I had already lost my ability to walk, and Amber

Back to the present.ZACH. Amber was already fast asleep beside me. Her head was resting against my chest. I was not even sure if this was a comfortable position, but one thing was evident—she didn’t want to let go of her hold on me. I did this to her. She was clinging to me with the hope I would still be here when she woke up. I had no plans of leaving, but I knew I was still not absolved of my sins to her. In fact, I added a new one. I didn’t tell her about Estelle. Not yet. She just got out of her agony caused by me, and I didn’t want her to go back to that misery. I would find a way. After I told her about Alpha Grant and the blood contract I signed—omitting the part where Estelle was involved—she sat up and asked me the exact day the contract would take effect. We have 55 days. Rather than sulking or blaming me for keeping it all to myself, she came up with numerous ideas of how we could beat the contract. I listened to her, mesmerized by the confidence she was showing.

ZACH.Amber helped me prepare breakfast that we could find in the cabin, which meant home-cooked oatmeal and coffee, as I only kept grains or non-perishable food here. I would bring more if I planned to stay, or I would just let Apollo hunt to keep us full.I thought last night was the best I’ve ever had, but everything just kept getting better. Having Amber around was like an antidote to my depression. Despite the gloomy weather outside, inside the cabin was full of sunshine. She’s definitely my sun—my whole universe revolves around her. Why did I ever think I could survive without her sunlight? As much as we wanted to cocoon ourselves in the cabin, we needed to face life. John, my therapist, will arrive soon, as I was not able to cancel our session today as I had planned. After Amber and I fixed our makeshift bed and washed the dishes, she asked me if we could come back here another time, and I told her we would come back soon. I just needed to let Arlo and Drake know I would be a

ZACH.“You only lost your ability to walk, but it’s unfair that we… that we had to lose a brother because of it. It’s not fair.” I was staring at my sisters, at a loss for words. I was too blinded by my own misery that I failed to see the lives around me and how I was affecting them. But they were right; I was a doting brother before the accident. A day never ended without me squeezing them for a hug—either with affection or just to irritate them. But when was the last time I did that?I swallowed as guilt washed over me. I did this to my sisters, but I could move forward and do better. “Come here, Ara, Nikka.” I opened my arms and was not even done with my words when they rushed toward me. I was lower than them, so they bent over and threw their arms around me. I embraced them both, hugging them tightly as I pressed kisses on their heads. “I’m sorry.” My voice croaked. “I didn’t know I was hurting you both.”They didn’t say anything but continued to sob in my arms, and I just close

ZACH.“Uhm, Amber. The cream?” John extended his hand, ready to take the cream away. Amber clutched the canister and smiled at him. “I’ll keep it for now. Zach doesn’t need it at the moment, also to make sure he won’t misplace it.”“Ah, okay. Is that okay with you, Alpha?” He asked me.I heard him, but my gaze was focused on Amber, who looked at me with beaming eyes. How could I say no to that? “Yes, that’s fine.”Amber winked at me before walking out of the room, and in no time, John proceeded to assist me with the next exercise. Sitting on a flat surface allowed me to lift my ass, but getting up from the wheelchair proved to be more challenging. John moved me to the corner where a beam was, where I could hold on as he helped me stand on my feet. Most of the force still came from him, and I could only stand for a few seconds before my legs would tremble. But it was an improvement. I started doing a standing exercise when I stabbed my leg with a pen in front of Amber, and I felt a

My heart thundered as I looked at the white or clear gel in my hand. “It looks like Vaseline cream to me.”“No way. Send me a picture. Does it smell like anything?”“It doesn’t smell at all.”“It has a repulsive smell. Not because it’s disgusting but because the mint scent is too much, and I don’t like mint, so I find it repulsive.”“I don’t smell anything at all. Not even a trace of mint.” I replied, still trying to sniff something, but I didn’t let it get too near my nose, just in case it was a dangerous substance. “Then it might be Vaseline in your hands.” She laughed heartily while I remained silent. My hands shook at the many thoughts running in my head. If this were a fake one, was this just stopping him from improving, or was the effect worse, like lowering his aura? Oh, Goddess, I hope it was not killing his wolf. “I sho

AMBER. I had no idea where to go. The cabin was the only place I could think of, but going there would take too much time, as I didn’t have a wolf, and I was already worn out from training. And with the pain in my chest, I didn’t think I could run any further. So I asked someone to drive me to the brook.I entered the cabin and stayed in the living room, sitting on the couch and watching as the fireplace began warming up the whole house. I had no idea how long I’d been there when I heard a car approaching, and I could only guess the warrior told Zach where I went, which was what I really wanted. I wanted to speak with him.I still had no idea what his plans were, but I wanted to believe he loved me and was choosing me. That was the reason he was giving up, the reason he wanted to step down as an Alpha and not push for it anymore. I didn’t know if I could live with him choosing me over his title. I never wanted to be the reason he stepped down as an Alpha, the same way I hated mysel

ZACH. After my conversation with Dad, Arlo told me Amber had asked someone to drive her to the brook where my cabin was. And it calmed my heart.I was worried she had run off somewhere or tried to leave the territory, but going to the cabin meant she wanted refuge in our own world. I had no idea what she heard, but I hoped this was a sign she was giving me a chance to explain. They were still eating dinner when I told them I would see Amber first, and Uncle Caspian volunteered to drive me there. He said he wanted a word with his daughter. And I knew I could not refuse it. While driving, he asked me if it would be okay if he asked Amber what she heard. He promised he would try to explain the best way he could, so she wouldn’t be upset with me once she faced me. I was grateful for that, as I didn’t want to argue with Amber, either. I knew I was wrong to hide it from her, but I did it because I didn’t want her to think about it. Although it was revealed now, at least I had her father

ZACH.By the time I was done telling them about our plans, Uncle Jake was smiling widely, and I was left confused. I was sure I didn’t say anything funny. Or did he think our plan was a big joke?My forehead creased the moment I stopped talking, and when I met his gaze, he flashed me a smug smirk. “You love her, don’t you?”I swallowed, and I felt my cheeks burning. Admitting to Amber that I love her was easier than saying it in a room full of older Alphas, including her father. “Your eyes twinkle, and your mouth twitches when you mention her name.” He added.“Like every sentence, you need to add her name to remind us it was her who gave you this idea. Or that she was with you.” Arlo added, and the smile on his face told me they were saying it in good faith, not to embarrass me. I dipped my head and gathered my hair, fixing the bun on my head. I didn’t know what to say, and I didn’t want to look at Uncle Caspian, as I knew I also owed him an apology. “Let’s not stress my boy here,”

ZACH. “Alpha,” Arlo called me, and I turned around to face him. He hadn’t answered the phone yet, but he was looking at the caller ID. “It’s Alpha Grant on the line.”I was right. This was not the first time he called. He would call from time to time to check on me, but I knew he wanted to remind me of the contract. I felt all eyes on me as the phone kept ringing. “I will answer it and put it on speaker,” I told them, and I saw some of them nod their heads. “But I want everyone to keep their silence.”There was nothing to hide anymore, so I might as well let them all in. ‘Can you order all borders not to allow Amber to leave?’ I mindlinked with Arlo as I rolled back toward my table. “Silver Moon Pack, this is Alpha Zach,” I said after I answered the call and put it on speaker. “I know Jacob is in there, together with his minions.” He said that without even greeting me. “Are you fucking watching me?” Uncle Jake answered, and I wanted to roll my eyes. What happened to keeping t

ZACH.“We can’t settle this if you keep shouting at each other.” Uncle Jake said at the exact moment a knock came and the door opened, revealing Arlo. I didn’t know if I would be grateful or annoyed at his disturbance, but all I knew was I didn’t want him in the office while Dad was pointing out all the wrong decisions I made—making me feel less of an Alpha than I already felt in the past two years. And then Mindy came and saw the pictures of Gray. She walked out and was followed by Arlo while the rest of us remained silent. I could already tell they were thinking the same thing as I was, but no one said anything about it, as if saying it out loud would make it a reality. But goddamn it, I wished I was wrong. I could only imagine what Mindy was feeling when she asked me if I was friends with Gray. The fuck, I was glad I wasn’t.Another Omega came to clean the spill and the shattered cup. Dad must have mindlinked someone, as I was frozen in my seat. After she left, Dad was calmer. H

ZACH.The moment Drake told me that the border advised him that Dad had entered the territory with three more Alphas, including Uncle Jake, I already knew something was off.I wanted to reach out to Amber and ask if she had told her father about the contract, but I didn’t want her to think I was accusing her of something. So, I just prepared myself for a confrontation because I was sure this was not just an ordinary visit. Uncle Jake, Aeon, and Caspian entered the room first. Although I could see their tensed shoulders, they offered me welcoming smiles before settling into the different areas of my office. Dad was the last one to enter. He came in with a dark expression, holding folders in his hand. He closed the door, almost slamming it, before walking forward and tossing the folders on my desk. They slid and stopped exactly in front of me.“What’s the meaning of that?” He asked in almost a growly tone.It had been too long since he was furious with me, and I could already tell why

BETA ARLO.“Are you friends with him, Alpha?” Mindy asked in a broken voice.“No. No.” Zach answered. “Why, Mindy?”“He… He…” She began. Even without completing her words, I felt like someone punched me in my chest, and it was getting harder to breathe. I didn’t even realize she had wriggled free from my hold and had run away until I heard a door closing.“Arlo, go after her,” Alpha Jake told me, and I nodded before I exited the office. I felt lost. My tears trickled down my cheeks with the many thoughts running through my head. One thing was certain—she was terrified of him. Maddox was dead, but maybe Mindy’s nightmare was not yet over.I found her in our bedroom. She locked herself in the bathroom, and no matter how I pleaded, she refused to come out. She said she needed time to compose herself and told me I should go back downstairs and apologize on her behalf. But there was no way I would leave her. So I kept talking to her while trying to think if there were any dangerous ite

BETA ARLO. I was already done with my training for the day when I got a mindlink that I was needed at the Alpha’s office. So I hurriedly finished my shower and changed into my clothes before heading out to pick up my mate. I was delayed for a few minutes by some females who stopped me and asked about some things, but after that, Mindy and I walked home. This might be ordinary for some, but walking home with her at the end of the day’s duties and training would be one of the highlights of my day. This signals that I would spend the rest of my time with or near her until it was time for bed. I used to just let the days go by doing my daily routine, but since she came home with me in this pack, the days have been more pleasant. I had a beautiful female who only needed to smile, and all my tiredness would slip away. The Mindy I was with had changed significantly from the Mindy I had met over two months ago. She was smiling more often and would throw jokes from time to time. She was st

AMBER.“Does it bother you?”She shook her head. “No, not that part, but I don’t like that after their training, they would go and talk to him. At first, I didn’t notice until they made some nasty remarks to me some days ago, and I started noticing their routine.”“Maybe start showing those females to whom Arlo belongs. Go to him once in a while when you’re here at the training grounds—hug him, or simply smile at him.”“Do you think that’s okay with him?”“I’m positive. I always notice him looking at you. He also checks on you from time to time.”“I noticed that too. I just don’t know how to react around him, especially when those girls are looking.”“Have you told Arlo what you feel about those girls visiting him?” She shook her head. “What should I tell him? He wasn’t doing anything wrong. He talks to them in a civil manner, and he keeps his distance. It’s the one with black hair that keeps moving closer to him.” She explained, sounding defeated. “I don’t think Arlo is interested
