( A week later)
Vera's P. O. V Aiming for the target, I tried to concentrate so I could make the shot. Jeff was teaching me how to use guns, just like Commander Snake had commanded. We had already left the rundown place to a much better apartment, and I already shopped for clothes. They've been quite nice to me, but of course, they came at a price.I sighed when I saw I missed the target again. I glanced at Jeff, and he didn't look pleased with all.
" You aren't focusing Ava..." He complained, walking up to me.
" I'm sorry..." I muttered, breathing heavily. " A lot is going on in my mind," I admitted. He took the gun from me and aimed at the target, pulling the trigger. I closed my eyes as a result of the noise it made, but when I opened it, I saw the hole. It went right through it.
" When you use the gun, you have to tune out all thoughts. It's just you and the trigger. It's
Vera. Weeks have passed and I'm still training. It's been going well but as the days go by and feeling more weak and nauseous. Not to mention how prickly I get in the morning. Today Jeff was teaching me fighting techniques and let's just say... It's been hard to focus as I keep running away so he wouldn't hurt me. When I finally settled down and he hit me–gently–he claims, I saw stars and I fell to the ground, everything going around in circles. I clutched my stomach due to the intense pain I was feeling there. I eventually got a hold of myself and stood up, panting heavily. " I'm sorry...." I breathed out, " I don't know what's wrong with me." I murmured. I heard someone laugh and when I looked up, I saw it was Kira. She seems to enjoy it when I'm hurt or whenever I do something wrong. " If you keep that up..." she began, her voice filled with contempt, " You're going to get kicked out." She said as a matt
(Days later) We were having breakfast one day when I suddenly felt the overwhelming urge to throw up. The bad thing is, everyone was present, so they watched me stand up, running to the bathroom to empty all the contents in my stomach. Cleaning myself up, I sauntered back to the living room, still feeling sick. On my way back, I heard Kira mutter, " Now vomiting? What's wrong with her?" I swallowed, trying to calm myself down. Everyone's eyes were on me the second I stepped into the living room. I looked down, nervously picking on my clothes. " Are you well?" Commander Snake asks and I nod. " Yeah. Probably it's the food," I mutter. Kira snickers. " I don't think so. She doesn't look okay to me. Look at how pale she is." She says, gesturing towards me. " I'm sure I'm fine. It's just nausea." I say, raising my chin at her. " You've been ha
Vera's P. O. V " I knew it... I just knew it. All that facade you were pulling. You were pregnant." Kira kept talking while I just stared ahead, waiting for the realization to sink in. " How did that happen?" Jeff asked, and I glanced at him, fighting for words. I gulped when I remembered that night. The night I gave myself away... Who knew it would come to this? " It happened sure h a long time ago. I didn't even think I would get pregnant." I replied, and he sighed, his brows furrowed in thought. " You can't keep the baby..." Kira said. I stared at her, my heart skipping a beat. " You're going to have to abort it." She continued, her voice high and haughty. I found myself shaking my head. " What?" I voiced out. " You heard me." She growled. I stared at Jeff, my eyes pleading. " Jeff..." I began, but he cut me off.
Vera's P. O. V Stirring on the bed, I squinted at the bright light coming in through the windows. My gaze wandered around till it settled on the wall clock in front of him. 10:17 am. Groaning slightly, I stepped out of the bed, ambling to the bathroom. I hurried through my morning routine and, splashing some water on my face, stared at my reflection. Though my color was a bit healthy now as opposed to the pale, dry skin I was so used to seeing, I wondered how long it would last till I ran out of money and had nothing. Which reminds me, I should seriously get a job. I trudged out of the bathroom, slowly eating my breakfast of leftover pizza and some fruit juice while I thought things through. I had figured out where I was on the map and realized I wasn't so far off from where I originally lived with madam Deborah. It made me want to see her again, even if I know I should stay away. Damning all consequences, I packed my things
(A month later) Vera's P. O. V Preparing for work, I turned on the radio to listen to some music before I finally went out. The first thing to come up was the News about Ray's father's sentence. He was given twenty years in jail with hard labor. A smile lit up my face hearing that. Although I wasn't satisfied with the number of years, he got because I felt he needed more, it was nice to know he was finally punished for his heinous crime. My thoughts wandered to Ray and once again, I wondered how he was doing now. Shaking my head as if trying to dislodge the thought, I focused my gaze on my stomach. A bump was beginning the show, and I loved it very much. I wouldn't stop caressing it. Due to the pregnancy was always tempted to see Madam Deborah or Ray, but I always stopped myself. Can't risk them finding out I'm still alive. Jeff keeps checking up on me, probably making sure I don't run away. It's not like I h
( A few months later) Chapter 9 Biting my lips so as to suppress a groan, I leaned heavily on the broomstick, breathing heavily. My stomach is so huge now and the added weight really isn't helping matters. Not to mention how uncomfortable have been feeling. When I finally managed to afford an hospitals visit, I was told I would be due in a few days. I've been dreading and expecting the day. I continued working even as the discomfort tripled. My boss saw me and probably out of pity, told me to take a break. I muttered my thanks and went to look for a quiet place to seat and rest my head. I was already drifting off when my phone buzzed, waking me up. I picked it up to check who the caller was. No other than Jeff. Breathing out, I picked it up. " Hey...." I muttered, my voice sounding scratchy. I ran a hand through my
Vera. I finally went back to the pack. And as expected, they were excited to see me. Or should I say... Jeff was happy to see me. Commander Snake still had that indifferent look on although I caught a hint of approval. Kira looked like she was going to explode, her eyes blazing and ears red. I paid no attention to her. " Vera!" Jeff said as he rushed to hug me. I stiffened, unfamiliar with the warmth. " For a second there, I thought you wouldn't return." He muttered against my ears. " Hey... " I began as we disengaged. " I said I'll be back, and here I am. Although I'll have to admit, I didn't want to be back." He nodded, his lips still curled up. I grimaced, looking around. The base looked different now... Sophisticated. You wouldn't even know this place is a home for highly trained robbers. " Wow... This place looks amazing. How did you get all the money to afford all of this?" I ask offh
" I found this child in my doorstep when I woke up last night. What am I supposed to do with it?" Ma'am Deborah asked the police officer, who was busy scribbling something into his note. " Did you now...." He muttered, uninterested. Glancing at her, he folded his hands, pressing his lips together. "Well... I don't know ma'am. You're going to have to take it to the hospital." He announced. " I already did that. I had the baby tested and they say she's in perfect health condition. What I don't understand is why anyone would want to live a child on my doorstep." The police then shifted his gaze towards the baby, who was already twitching in ma'am Deborah arms. A cursory look and he sighed. " She's still really young. How old?" " Probably a few weeks." Ma'am Deborah replied, rocking her. " According to the doctor." " Well, you can take care of
Ray.I stared at the figure before me, too shocked to speak. Surely, my mind must be playing tricks on me, because this looks too real to be true. Isn't Vera dead? The figure stared at me, moving closer. I resisted the urge to take a step back. She pulled her hoodie off, taking in a deep breath." Didn't think we'd meet this way..." She muttered rather dryly, her lips twitching. I took a step forward." Is this really you?" I asked, disbelief still evident in my voice. She nodded. " Am I really speaking to you?" I asked again. She nodded again. I scoffed, still not being able to wrap my head around it." You're not dead?" " No."" How can it be!? How's it possible? I thought you were dead!" I muttered." Well, I'm not." " If you're not dead, why didn't you show yourself years ago!!" I yelled, unable to keep still anymore." Now's not the time to explain. I came for another reason." She replied, her voice still painfully calm. I took in
Vera." Are you really going to kill him?" I asked Jeff moments later Commander Snake had left the room." If Commander Snake says we should do it, then we do it." He replies, not looking at me. The ache in my heart gets worse." What if..." I began, stopping myself. Taking a deep breath, I started again. " What if he didn't rat out on us? Won't we be taking an inncoents life?" Jeff looked at me then. " An inncoents life? He saw Ava. Didn't you see that? Why won't he rat out on us?!" I pursed my lips, looking at everywhere but him. Jeff walked closer, stopping inches in front of me. " By the way Ava, why did you freeze up the way you did? You know him somewhere?" He asked and flinched a bit, placing my hands on my throat. It was at the tip of my tongue to lie, but I knew I would never get away with it if I did." Yes... I do." I whispered." More the reason he should be dead." Jeff replied without a moments hesitation. Then turned, walking away.
(Few days later)Vera.Standing beside Commander Snake, I tried to pay attention to what he was saying as I kept getting distracted. There was a new mission on ground and just like the others, it was all high profile. Unlike the others where would meet the victim in his home or hotel, this one was going to take place in a party so we need to be extra careful Commander Snake gave a list of instructions and things we should watch out for and once he was done, dismissed us. From the corner of my eyes, I watched as Jeff and Kira walk away, chuckling at something one of them said. Lately, Jeff's been hanging out with Kira. Not that I'm jealous but it has gotten to a point where I'm beginning to think they're doing it on purpose because Jeff ignores me whenever I try to talk to him. Normally, I would leave him alone but today I couldn't, I really need to talk to him.Walking up towards them and tapped Jeff lightly on the shoulder. He stopped but didn't turn, only swiveled h
Vera. " What are you doing?!" I asked, my heart pounding. staggering away from him, I tried it steady my nerves. He had a shocked look on at first but quickly sobered up. " What does it look like I'm doing? Kissing you." He leaned in again but this time I pushed him away, standing on my feet. " I don't why you keep forcing this Jeff. I told you I'm not ready." The shock on his face melted to reveal a hidden anger. " It's been 5 years!" He shot back. " I'm sorry, I just can't do it. I can't." I replied, avoiding his gaze. I didn't realize how close he was until I looked up. " Are you seeing someone else?" He asked calmly, but I couldn't help but shudder at the tone of his voice. "N-no of course not!" I replied, shaking my head. He held me still and tried to kiss me again. I struggled this time around, eage
Vera.Waking up a few moments later, my eyes travelled to the window next to me. It was still dark. Very slowly a smile begins to stretch my lips. I'll be seeing my daughter again. I jumped out of the bed, hurrying towards the bathroom. I need to get ready! I hurried through my morning routine, coming out of the bathroom moments later. I immediately picked out an outfit that would hide me. Brushing out my hair and applying a bit of make-up, I was ready. I picked up my bag and car keys, stepping out of my room.Although it was still dawn, Jeff was already out working on his laptop. I greeted him, about to leave when he called me back." We should go out after this." He said, sparing me a glance. I stopped, turning." What?" I asked. He looked up at me." When you come back from your daughter. We should go out." " Oh... Okay. Sure." I nodded and stepped out. Walking towards the garage, I sought out my car and stepped in, turning it on and driving o
5 years later.Ray walked into ma'am Deborah restaurant, glancing around so he could look for her. Ma'am Deborah was the first to see him however. " Raymond!" She called out, walking towards him. Ray stopped,a small grin breaking out. Once ma'am Deborah was in front of him, she pulled him into a hug. Ray stiffened at first but soon relaxed, tightening his hands around her. Eventually she pulled away." It's been so long! Where have you been!?" She asked, holding his hands. He chuckled, then settled into a soft sigh." Away. Anywhere that was far away from here." He replied sincerely. Ma'am Deborah took a proper look at him. Although he still looked the same, he was no longer the young, charming Ray she first met. She had to blame time and grief for ageing him so quickly. A few inches taller, a deep set eyes that sparkled less, and a very evident stubble. She could detect some faint frown lines and her heart broke a little inside. She shook it aside and smiled wa
