Mom and Dad had put Mina and Mallory to work while we were gone. They’d decorated the backyard, and had a table set up with different dishes from the local Chinese restaurant, Kimia’s favorite place. They’d ordered large quantities of both white and fried rice, sweet and sour pork, both chow mein and lo mein, beef and broccoli, cashew chicken, and walnut shrimp. Then, because Kimia loves chocolate, a homemade chocolate cake. My stomach growled when I saw the spread.
We invited Nate and his family to join us. The Graycorts have sort of adopted Mrs. Mactire and her sister since they moved to Aspen Falls. Mr. Graycort seems to like Nate, but is unsure about Jimmy and Saoirse. I don’t blame him. Nate’s cousins can be a little much.
After we’d gotten our food, we’d all settled on blankets around t
If someone asked me for advice, I would first tell them never to date a guy with a psycho possessive ex. Second, I would tell them not to let their best friend date their brother. It’s just gross. Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy for them that they’ve found love, but the displays of affection are starting to seriously disgust me.I should be used to it. I really should be! They’ve been dating since spring, and now it’s fall. That’s months of them stealing kisses, cuddling, and sneaking into each other's beds. It’s just one more reason I should stay a wolf as much as possible. That and the first piece of advice I would give.Last spring, I dated Simon Jones. He was the hottest sophomore at my school, and he liked me. Me! I was just this average looking girl who was always with either her be
Ah, the first day of school. Junior year edition. Also, it’s the last year my new friends would be hanging out with me here. Fuck. Maybe I should have talked with a councillor about graduating early, too. If I did, then I’d have more time to work and save up for a down payment on a location for a club.Ma thinks I ought to go to that wolf university and get some degree. As if that would help me make more money. I already know how to run a bar, thanks to my Uncle Micky back in Boston. Why should I shell out thousands of dollars for some prick to teach me what I already know?Just ask around Aspen Falls. My first party here, I ran it like I would my club. I was the bartender, and my two cousins, Jimmy and Saoirse, acted as bouncer and DJ. It would have been seriously awesome, if Kimi hadn’t been kidnapped by tha
“Whore,” someone said as they bumped into me from behind. “I can’t believe she came back this year,” another person said to the first. “Ugh. I can’t believe people believed her lies,” the first person said. I knew it was a mistake to send Rose and Kam ahead of me. It was Friday, and I wanted to get my books into my locker before lunch. The two insulting me were Kirsten’s friends. They were wearing their cheer uniforms. They were supposed to be advertising the first game tonight, but instead, they were mouthing off to me. I just shook my head, and rolled my eyes. The first girl turned to me. “Why don’t you just do everyone a favor and leave?”
“So, you’re going to leave us and be a hoity toity college man, huh?” Jeremy asked, handing me a beer. I was at his place waiting for the three musketeers. I’d just told them my new plans for the future. Damn my new friends. “Yeah. The goodies talked me into it. They made a good point about needing a cook for the club.” I took a swig and waited for Saoirse’s reaction. The plans included all three of us. We were our own trio. We worked together back in Boston at Uncle Micky’s, and we had each other’s backs when shit went down. They were there for me after Dad put me in the hospital for mouthing off to him. I was there when their dad cheated on their mom. They were the closest things to siblings I had, and the only family living in this assbackwards town that I’ve grown to love.
“Is there anything you’d like to talk about today?” The usual question. The question Dr. Mayfeld has been asking me for months. The same question that has the same answer. “Nope,” I responded. What is there to talk about? Therapy was to help me process and work through what had happened to me, but I still don’t have any memory of it. It happened. The only way I could have avoided being raped by a bastard was to avoid liking Simon. “How has school been?” She really thinks she’ll get me to talk eventually. “Allright,” I lied. The whole cheer squad keeps hissing slurs at me in the halls when I’ve been alone. There have also been notes shoved into my locker. Even some members of the football team have been coming onto me in the worst ways. Nate at least respects boun
So, I may or may not be stalking Kimia. I knew she had therapy today, and that she usually shifts after therapy. Not rocket science. I just figured that with Kam and Rose hooking up and being all coupley, Kimi would need someone to run with her. In spite of what we tell Rose, wolves do crave companionship. I was surprised she let me fall asleep next to her, and glad she teased me when she woke me up. The woman needs some serious play. I did make sure she didn’t see me watching her enter her house. I even heard her, too. I wish I could say I was surprised by the mention of her being damaged goods. I wasn’t. I ran home, and didn’t bother to cover anything when I went inside. Ma was cooking something on the stove, and didn’t notice my state right away. “What’s cooking, Ma?”
“Holymotherfuckingshitballs!” I screamed when Rose, Saoirse, and the M&M’s jumped onto my bed. All three started cackling like insane witches. “What the hell?” “What kind of swearing was that?” Mina gasped. “The kind used when four people jump on my bed and take me by surprise! I repeat, what the hell!” I nudged Mal with my foot while pushing Rose away from me. She was kicking her feet in the air. “Girls’ night! I sent Kam away, and you have the four of us all to yourself.” “Why?” I shouldn’t be questioning her. I’ve missed my best friend since she started dating my brother. I’ve been feeling like a third wheel, so a girls’ night was welcome. Just the timing was suspicious. &nb
Rose texted me saying she wanted a girls’ night, and she was sending Kam over to keep him away. I told my ma, and she made plans to meet Aunt Nancy at the bar on Main Street that had pool tables. I don’t get small towns. They only have one Italian place, no McDonalds, but they’ve got three dive bars all on Main Street. At any rate, Kam arrived at my place, but he wasn’t alone. “What’s Horndog Harry doing here? I thought he bailed with his ma?” I asked when I opened my door to find Jeremy with Kam.“Screw you, Mactire. Not everyone can get lucky easily,” Jeremy grumbled as he pushed past me to ditch his stuff in the basement.I looked at Kam for an explanation. “His dad has custody this weekend, and he didn&rsq
“Fuck,” I swore as Ray kicked my ass at Mario Kart. Ray chuckled with both hands in the air. “Suck it, pup! I finally won for the first time since you were ten!”I tossed the controller and ran my hands over my face. Game nights at the frat house and losing to my brother were the least of my worries. Rose had been officially charged with manslaughter, and bailed out until her trial in a few weeks. At the advice of her lawyer, Rose and her mom signed a temporary lease at another apartment complex. Something about not sleeping with the victim’s family.“You are off your game, bro,” one of my frat brother’s slurred. “Nobody beats Kamron the Machine.”Ray bumped my shoulder. “He’s right. You’re stressing more than usual.”“Maybe because Rose has been avoiding me,” I sighed. Garrett, a sophomore, shook his head. “You must be reading too much into it. That girl is head over heels for you. She’s probably just overwhelmed with her trial and shit.”I shook my head. “I’ve known her my whole l
“Come on back, and we’ll have you give us a urine sample, then Rina will draw some blood samples to make sure your baby is okay,” Deb’s voice filtered through the office to my station. It’d been a little busier this month, but that was to be expected a few weeks after Spring Break. Lots of little surprises.“R-rina?” a familiar voice stammered. “Rina works here?” Elli and Deb rounded the corner to my space, and I had the sample cup ready with the alcohol wipes.“I sure do, Ellie,” I replied. “Congratulations. The bathroom is right through that door, and I’ll be here ready to draw your samples when you’re done.” I pointed to the door of the restroom where our expecting mothers give their samples every time they come in.Deb looked between us. “You two know each other?” I shrugged. “Small school, and we spent Spring Break together in Mexico.”Elli was pale and shaking a little as she grabbed the cup she was supposed to pee into, then made a b-line for the bathroom. Deb leaned over to m
“Now, Kimi,” Dr. Mayfeld started on our bi-monthly telesessino, “have you and Nate talked about finding a couples therapist to help the two of you transition into parenthood?”I shook my head. “Not yet. We will, but between school and my cousin’s demise, we haven’t exactly made it a priority.”“I understand,” she nodded. “I hate to say it, but you and your friends have gone through one hell of a year. Are you sure you aren’t cursed?”I laughed. “If I believed in curses, I might think that too. I mean, it is possible that Kirsten cursed us when she went to prison.”“Seriously,” she calmed down, but still smiled, &ldq
My parents knocked on our apartment door a few hours after we’d come home from the station. I really appreciated Kimi telling off Kam for me. It was the weirdest feeling. I was almost out of my body for most of the afternoon. It was a little surreal. I also both wanted to be hugged and cuddled, but I also wanted to be left alone.I kept thinking that it was my fault a person was dead. Yes, Matty was a horrible person who attacked me, but I didn’t want him dead! Call me optimistic, but I hoped for him to pay for his crimes, then come out a better person who had learned to respect others.I’d spent most of my time in my room, and barely registered when my mom walked in and sat on my bed. “Oh, my sweet Rose,” she sighed and pushed my curls out of my face. “I am so sorry you have to go thro
“Shit hit the fan, and I’m at my sister’s for a few days,” I explained to Elli over the phone.“I can’t believe all that has happened,” Elli replied. “Is Rose okay?”I sunk into my sister’s couch and sighed. “I honestly don’t know. They hadn’t returned by the time I cleared out. I hope her parents don’t find my room disgusting.”“Why wouldn’t they just get a hotel?” Elli asked. The question confused me. “I’m sure they could, but their daughter just killed a guy in self defense. She kinda needs all her family around her now.” Then a thought occurred to me. “Were you thinking about
“I want to see my fiance. I need to know she’s okay,” I shouted at the officer at the front desk of the police station.Kimi put a hand on my shoulder. “Kam, calm down. They have to go through the hoops. Besides, Officer West sounded like someone who is fair.”I spun to face my sister. “My fiance and your best friend is back there by herself, probably scared to death, and the only people available to her are people in our uncle’s pocket. I’m not going to calm down until I know she’s safe!”“Kam, you making a scene isn’t going to get her out here faster,” Nate tried to reason. He turned to the officer. “Is there someone who can come out and tell us what happened?”
Blake finally managed to push the door to the men’s room open. He broke the lock in the process, but the screaming he heard terrified him. He regretted not being faster when he observed the scene.A man was lying under a broken urinal with eye wide open, and unfocused. His jaw was slack, and a shocking amount of blood was pooled under his head. He looked back out into the hall, and grabbed a random student. “Call 911, and get someone here, now!”The student glanced into the bathroom. “Holy shit!”Blake carefully walked around the body to the woman shuddering in a ball against the wall of the open stall. “Hey,” he said gently. “Are you okay?” He reached a hand to her shoulder, and she flinched.
“Welcome back, everyone,” Professor Anderson greeted the class when she walked into the room. “I hope everyone had a fun, safe spring break? I see we’re still missing a few people. Hopefully they return before the next class. In the meantime, please go to the class webpage.”I already had it up, so I just scanned the page looking for what I expected her to click. I found it under the assessments tab. “I would hope you all are intelligent enough to find what I’d like you to do today, but in case you’re hung over, or not up to your best mental state, find the assessments tab, and click on the test titled, ‘Post Spring Break Quiz.’“The password is capital ‘I’ underscore, paid, underscore, too, with two ‘o’s, underscore, much, underscor
The apartment in Gayl was becoming more and more like home to me. Walking through the apartment door Sunday before school started felt like a weight was lifting off my shoulders. Granted, Kimi and I still needed to finish the nursery for our little girl, and we still had school, but we were happiest here. At least I was, anyway.I guess Kimi wasn’t as happy. She waddled into our room, and fell onto the bed on her back. “Ugh,” she grunted, “would you be offended if I said I miss the bed in Boston?”I chuckled. “Not at all. It was a damn comfortable bed..”“Much bigger than this full size one,” she said and rolled over so she could sit up. “I swear if this little girl gets much bigger, we’ll need a bigger bed.&r
