Helen's POV
I sat at the dresser staring at my reflection through the mirror as various unfettered thoughts assailed my mind.
Inhaling sharply, I averted my stare to the clock which was mounted against the wall and sighed for the umpteenth time that evening.
Four hours had passed since Fernando came to drop the envelope, yet I still hadn't thought of what to do next that didn't require me asking for Lucy's help.
The poor girl also had a lot on her plate as she was an orphan who worked hard to fend for herself, and I couldn't imagine adding to her burden.
But then again, I had to call her or risk getting humiliated by Fernando tomorrow and I couldn't have that.
He had already embarrassed me enough by flinging the divorce papers at me in the presence of the maids, who hated me with passion just like their master.
I couldn't even report their insolence to Fernando because I knew he'd probably scoff then ask me to stop being a baby.
Out of all of them, only the head maid cared about me and asked after my personal well-being from time to time.
She made me feel better on the days I felt extreme despondency and helplessness.
As if reading my thoughts, my phone vibrated with an incoming international call from Lucy.
I gasped, mildly relieved before answering the call.
"How are you doing, my babe?" Her cheerful voice rang from the other end, causing me to burst into tears.
I pressed my lips into a thin line as I tried to comport myself to give her a coherent response.
As much as I tried to suppress my sniffles, Lucy heard it and she asked, "Are you crying? What's happening with you?"
I quickly cleared my throat. "Of course not. I mistakenly ate something with Kiwi."
"Oh, why would you make such a mistake? Have you forgotten you're allergic to it? Are you okay though?" She rambled out, causing me to smile, in spite of my unfortunate situation.
Lucy was sent by the heavens to me.
She was probably sent by my mother to help me navigate life, because my mother was the only person who had cared about me before she succumbed to complications arising from ovarian cancer, when I was ten.
"I'm fine now. I've taken my allergy pills." I fibbed, staring at my pathetic form through the mirror.
My collar bones suddenly looked extremely prominent while my face was gaunt and emaciated.
Even the sweatshirt I was currently wearing suddenly seemed too baggy for me.
How had I not noticed that I had lost so much weight?
"Thank goodness. You make me worry too much, Helen. Have you finally managed to get a job?" Lucy inquired.
Guilt hitched my throat as I shook my head, even though she couldn't see me.
"I'm yet to get any."
Lucy was still unaware of the fact that I had dropped out to get married three years ago.
I didn't tell her because I was ashamed of myself.
I mean, I was married to a neglectful billionaire who didn't give a crap about my wellbeing and left me to look like a poverty-stricken widow.
When she asked me to send her my college graduation pictures, I made up various excuses until she eventually stopped asking.
Plus if Lucy found out about my current condition, she would board a flight back home from Australia and I didn't want her to waste her hard-earned money on me.
"America's employment system is still crap I see," She sighed. "Or do you want to come here? With your degree, many business corporations would be willing to hire you. I can even recommend you to someone."
Oh, Lucy. I thought inwardly, as tears trickled down my face.
If only she knew that I was far from being a college graduate.
Hell, I couldn't even boast of a skill.
I had nothing tangible to my name except my decrepit phone, that I had meticulously saved up to buy four years ago, while I was in my second year of college.
Apart from Lucy, the only person I could ask for help was Fernando's younger brother, Roman, who was the odd one out among his family.
While Fernando and their mother were both archfiends, Roman was very kind to me.
He would often stop by to give me money and gifts, which Fernando would end up seizing from me.
Fernando would tell me that I was a golddigger for collecting his gifts instead of rejecting them.
After some time, Roman stopped giving me gifts and later on, he stopped coming to the mansion altogether.
I couldn't dare to ask Fernando about his brother lest he yelled at me, so I just let it be.
A year and half had passed since I last saw him and I just hoped he was doing well wherever he was.
"Are you still there, Helen?" Lucy's voice danced into my brain, pulling me back to my sad reality.
"Yeah, I'm still here. Were you saying something?"
She sighed, "Something is going on with you but you don't want to tell me. I just want you to remember that I will always be here for you. You can tell me anything, you know that right?"
"I do," I whispered. "You are right, I'm not fine at all. I'm going through hell an-"
"Who the hell are you talking to?" Fernando's husky baritone drifted into my ears, causing me to mistakenly hang up on Lucy.
I stood up immediately as I shakily turned off my phone.
How much of my conversation had he heard?
How could I not have seen his reflection in the mirror?
"I-I didn't realize you were here. When did you get back?" I stammered, and he huffed.
"Change into whatever you find in here," He spat, throwing a big gift bag on the bed. "You will follow me to a business dinner. That will be your last obligation as my wife."
Afterward, he pivoted on his heel and left.
I stared tentatively at the bag but drew nearer to assess its contents.
A gasp involuntarily escaped me when I brought out a short black dress, a pair of silver heels, and a pair of silver dangle earrings.
The dress was the most beautiful dress I had ever seen in my entire life.
It was an off shoulder, uneven flared dress which was purely made with soft silk that tenderly caressed my skin as I wore it.
There was no doubt that that dress must have cost a huge amount of money, probably thousands or even hundreds of thousands.
Then, I tossed my hair into a french bun and donned my earrings before putting on my shoes.
The only makeup item I had was an almost empty tube of lip gloss, so I used it like that.
As I stared at myself in the mirror, a sad smile grazed my lips.
Today was the last day that I would be addressed as "Mrs Alvarez."
I glanced at the clock again before exiting the room.
"You look pretty, madam." The head maid complimented me, and I smiled.
"Thanks."
"I thought you were planning to sleep in there." Fernando gruffed as I walked to the car.
He didn't even seem enchanted or fascinated by my look, he just gave me a once over before getting into the car.
Gulping harshly, I stepped into the car and sat down stiffly as Fernando expertly maneuvered the car onto the road.
About thirty minutes later, we arrived at the venue which was an imposing event hall, with exquisite decorations.
The moment we stepped in, Fernando left my side without a word and moved to a svelte woman with pink-dyed hair.
She was gorgeous with curves in all the right places, and her garish tresses flowed down her back to her waist.
The woman also exuded an air of luxurious confidence mixed with haughtiness; she was well aware of how stunning she was.
My heart ached in betrayal as I watched him smile and dance with the woman, while I, his wife stood alone.
Never for once in our three years of marriage had Fernando smiled at me.
I didn't need to be told that the woman was the love of his life, who he was divorcing me for.
Tears stung my eyes when the woman whispered something in his ear, which prompted him to dart me a fleeting glance, which was accompanied by a disgruntled expression.
There and then, I resolved to sign the divorce papers as soon as we got home and also move out of the mansion, before the dawn of the next day.
Helen's POVWith a heavy exhale, I grabbed my packed luggage, darted a final look at the tiny space which I had been privileged to call my bedroom for three years. As I felt tears prick my eyes, I quickly exited the room and made my way out of the mansion. The whole surrounding was as silent as a graveyard as everyone had retired to bed, and only the chirping of owls and crickets filled the night.Under Fernando's strict supervision, I had finally signed the divorce papers immediately we got back from the business gala last night. And after I signed it, he had left with the envelope, without uttering another word.A sad smile curved my lips as I trudged down the second floor. My life was truly a miserable one.Nothing good ever happened to me.I must have destroyed a country in my past life for me to be allergic to good luck in this life.Only the heavens knew where I was heading to because I sure as hell had no idea.I was still yet to tell Lucy the truth about my entire situation, s
Helen's POVMustering up enough courage, I dialed Lucy's number and waited with my heart hammering against my chest, for her to answer the phone. Two days had passed since I moved out of Fernando's mansion into a motel, using the money Lillian had given me.The cash had been quite helpful but I knew I couldn't keep staying in the motel without doing anything tangible with my life.In a matter of days, I would exhaust the money and be forced to make the streets my new home."Helen?" Lucy sounded groggy."Hi, Lucy. Did I wake you?" I asked, feeling guilt tug my heart.I didn't even remember that our time zones were different."Yeah, but it's fine," She said. "What the hell happened to you? Your line has been unreachable for the past two days. Do you know how worried I was? Hell, I was about to board a flight to New York." She rambled out."I'm sorry I made you worry about me. It's just that stuff came up and I needed to think properly." I uttered."Right, you were telling me something t
Fernando's POV"Here are the documents containing the minutes of the last meeting with Bezos construction, sir." My secretary, Miss Kim, said as she placed the heavy pile of paperwork on my desk."Thanks," I nodded, giving the paperwork a once over. "You may leave."Sighing, I grabbed a pen from my locker, dragged the documents closer and began to inscribe my signature on each of them, without perusal. My temples throbbed with an agonizing migraine that made it seem like my neck was about to snap into two.I blamed my migraine on my unhealthy consumption of alcohol throughout last night.I couldn't get a wink as I had stayed up thinking about my failed relationship with Bethany. If someone had told me five years ago that I would end up regretting divorcing Helen, I would have scoffed at the person. But now, not only did I regret chasing Helen out of my life, I also regretted reuniting with Bethany. When she first moved in with me five years ago, we had dwelled harmoniously, to the poi
FIVE YEARS LATERHelen's POV"Good morning, sir." I bowed to Alexander Ferguson, my boss of three years. After I moved to Australia five years ago, I had continued my college education and had finished successfully with a degree in accounting.Fortunately for me, I had gotten a job as the secretary to the director of VZ firm, which was one of the largest corporate firms in Australia, as soon as I graduated. My job had made it easier for me to move out of Lucy's apartment into mine. However, the only thing that hadn't changed was my hatred for Fernando, which seemed to grow in large bouts as the days went by.The vitriolic hatred that I harbored for him made it difficult for me to date any other man, because I thought they were all manipulative jerks who wanted nothing more than a woman's downfall.Although Lucy had forced me to go on numerous dates, I just couldn't be attracted to any of them.Fernando had truly ruined my standards in men.Hell, I was probably aromantic and asexual at
Fernando's POVAs I shrugged off my coat, a knock came on the door."Come in," I uttered. "The door is open."Miss Kim walked in, looking troubled. "We have a problem, sir."I hung my coat on the rack before motioning her over. "A problem? What is going on exactly?""Information just reached me that the director and assistant director at the Australia branch have both been arrested for embezzlement." She uttered, fiddling with her hands nervously.A mix of fury and perplexion danced within me as I regarded her for some moments without saying anything.Fuck. I shouldn't have listened to mother when she had asked me to make her cousin the director of the Australian branch. Now, his greed and corruption was about to plunge my company into a state of financial crisis.I should have known that he was nothing more than gluttonous old man, who was only after his own pocket and not the well-being of my company."So, what's happening over there right now?" I asked."The police are conducting a
Helen's POV"Excuse us, we are coming through. Please don't close the door." I heard a feminine squeal as I made to shut the elevator doors. Two young women, who I presumed were in their early twenties rushed in, clutching satchel bags."Good morning, miss Helen." They greeted in unison, as the door slid shut and the elevator finally started moving."Morning." I darted them a polite grin, and faced my front. For some reasons, they seemed quite familiar but I couldn't remember where I knew them from."We are currently interning at the sales department," As if she was a mind-reader, one of them spoke. "You gave us the company's handbook two weeks ago, ma'am."Oh, right.I could finally recall where I knew them from; it was at the orientation ceremony for new interns that had taken place two weeks ago."Oh, hi. How have you been enjoying the company so far?" I asked, directing my attention to them. They both exchanged glances before the second lady replied. "Our experience has been nice
Fernando's POV"Any news on the employee who moved the company funds for the assistant director?" I asked, as I strode out of the elevator, with Tim Carson, the team leader of the marketing department trailing behind me.Yesterday, I arrived in Australia late in the evening.I had been too jetlagged to even take a shower and had flopped on the nearest sofa I saw, the moment I stepped into my penthouse."Yes, sir," Tim replied. "They took her into custody yesterday to ask her some questions, and she confessed to creating some foreign accounts for the assistant director under her name.""Very well then," I mumbled. My forehead creased in a frown when I saw a small crowd of people–my employees, chatting idly in front of the director's–well, my new office."And why exactly are you standing aimlessly in front of my office?" I barked, and they instantly hurried back to their jobs.Fucking lazy bones. They really knew how to make a good impression. I scoffed, twisting the door knob."You sho
Helen's POV"So," Lucy said. "What are you going to do now?"I had just finished narrating how I had seen Fernando again that day, and how the sight of him had dampened my mood.Lucy was currently out of town, so I had to settle for calling her because I was desperate to share the latest development with her.And yes, I couldn't wait until she got back. The anxiety rippling through me in vicious waves was bound to make me crazy if I kept everything to myself until I could contact Lucy physically."I'm resigning, what else?" I scoffed. "I can't believe I've been surviving on his money indirectly after making a pact with myself that I was never gonna need his stupid money."The thought caused anger to boil within me as I tightened my grip on Ethan's small hand.We were currently at the mall shopping for groceries and a super mario game set for Ethan."That aunty Lulu?" He asked, eyes glistening with childlike innocence."Yes, baby," I found myself grinning from ear to ear, despite the i
