Chapter 535

Author: Cozy Season
That was one billion dollars. There was no way Melody would let that kind of money fall into Hester's hands.

The Vargas family wasn't even a big player in the business world. If they had any value at all, it was only because they'd been lucky enough to cross paths with her.

"Yes, Mrs. Nichols Sr.," Sophie responded.

She sighed and called Debra, who was waiting in the hospital corridor for Juan's surgery to finish.

"Madam, how is Mr. Nichols?"

"The surgery isn't over yet. Why?"

"Well, the Vargas family came to cause trouble earlier," Sophie said, casting a glance at Melody, who was lounging on the couch nearby. "Mrs. Nichols Sr. wants him to call her once he wakes up."

Debra spoke calmly. "Juan isn't waking up today. If Mrs. Nichols Sr.'s got a problem, she'll have to solve it herself."

"But the deadline..."

"Sophie, whose name is on that contract?"

"It's Mrs. Nichols Sr.'s."

"Since she signed it, she can pay for it herself. One billion dollars is hardly anything, right? I'm

Jordan acted on his decision the next day.Since the Potter Mansion was closer to Arcane Academy, Debra lived there during college, going to school with Jordan. At breakfast, Jordan came down first.Normally, he woke Debra up. But today, he didn't, so she overslept by 15 minutes. If not for her internal clock, she'd have been even later. When she came down, her hair was messy. The maid glanced at Jordan. "Mr. Jordan Potter, you didn't wake Miss Frazier?""Not my job. I'm not her babysitter." Jordan grabbed his bag, ready to leave. The maid froze, and so did Debra. They were unsure what was going on with him.But with no time to waste, Debra grabbed a piece of bread and rushed out."Miss Frazier, be careful," the maid reminded her."Got it," Debra replied, hurrying to the car.Once inside, she sulked, "What's your problem? What did I do to you?"She had apologized to him yesterday, but he was still giving her attitude.Jordan ignored her, staring out the car window.Debra

Jordan got used to standing behind Debra. She was smart but careless. She'd walk straight past obstacles on the road, too lazy to go around. He would clear them for her almost instinctively. As Andrew said, it was their way of getting along. It was all a habit. But Jordan didn't like the idea. His actions weren't much different from some desperate guy chasing a girl.He slammed his fist on the desk.Barton walked in and bumped into the scene. "That's Mr. Andrew Potter's new desk."Jordan pulled his fist back, embarrassed. "Uh, I just remembered I've got homework. Gotta go."He bolted out of the room.Barton blinked. "Isn't Mr. Jordan Potter just in college? Homework already?""He's not great at lying," Andrew said calmly. "Probably in love.""In love?" Barton mused. He hadn't seen Jordan with any girl he liked.Andrew didn't explain, but he understood Jordan's panic. That was what a lovesick person looked like.Back in his room, Jordan's mind raced. He didn't know why, b

Debra hid behind Cecile and Dylan Potter, unfazed by Jordan's threats. With the adults around, Jordan wouldn't dare touch her.Jordan stomped his feet. "Mom, Dad, you're gonna spoil her rotten. All she does is boss me around and never respect me.""You're older. It's only natural that you look out for her," Cecile said. Be a man and own up. You started it.""What? You're joking. With you two around, who'd dare touch her?" he argued.Dylan and Cecile exchanged looks, shaking their heads."Andrew protects you, and even my parents side with you. Happy now?" Jordan sulked.Debra just stuck out her tongue at him.Frustrated, Jordan stormed into the study. "I'm done.""What's wrong?" Andrew asked, sitting with his usual gentle smile."What else? It's Debra. Mom and Dad always take her side, saying I bully her," Jordan complained. "Are you really marrying her? I don't want her as my sister-in-law.""Why don't you like her?""I just don't. I hate how she acts like she's above me."

The army vetted Jordan for a long time.By then, he wasn't the spoiled rich kid anymore. The higher-ups gave him a critical mission. It involved the four great families and Debra. The car accidents that killed the four families' elders years ago had a wide-reaching influence.Caleb always believed a hidden force lurked in Seamar City, Orkgate, or even overseas. Jordan's mission was to go undercover in Orkgate."Marion spent over a decade alone overseas to uncover the secrets behind the four families. As the Potter family's heir, can't you even handle this?" Caleb said solemnly. That hit Jordan's weakest spot. Everyone said the Potters had a genius in Andrew and a slacker in Jordan. He hid his skills on purpose, but he didn't want people to think the Potters had no one left."I'll do it," he said, eager to make Andrew proud. In Orkgate, he dealt with thugs every day and caught bits and pieces about Debra.Caleb had told him that for the mission, he had to cut personal ties and

Marion and Robert rarely got this drunk. But even though they passed out, their instincts stayed sharp. Anyone who touched them now might get a reflex punch."Forget it. They'll sleep it off here. At worst, they'll wake up with sore backs," Solomon said."What?" Lillian didn't hear him.She was already trying to help Jordan up. As she did, the bottle slipped from his pocket and hit the floor.Made of special glass, it didn't shatter.Lillian set Jordan down and picked it up. "Nice material. Didn't even crack."Curious, she opened the cap. In an instant, a strange scent hit her nose.Solomon smacked her hand. "Don't mess with other people's stuff.""I'm his niece. He won't mind it." She shrugged but closed the bottle anyway.Jordan mumbled something, and she leaned over. "What?""What was he saying?""No idea."Maybe because they'd talked too much about the past, Jordan's mind drifted to when he joined the army.Back then, he was still a reckless kid.The day Debra gave h

At Jordan's 43rd birthday party, everyone drank heavily.Past 40, they loved gatherings like this. They always shared old stories over drinks.Lillian and Solomon didn't care for their chatter. During these dinners, they whispered about how the adults just loved booze and big talk.Jordan stepped onto the balcony to smoke, his head fuzzy from too much wine. He pulled out a small bottle without thinking.Back at the lab, he had tried the medicine too under William's encouragement. He always thought he loved Debra, though it was just a quiet crush he never confessed. But youthful passion stuck with him into adulthood, even middle age.But in the dream, he only saw Andrew. It turned out Andrew was the one who mattered most to him.He even wanted to have that dream again."Uncle Jordan, why aren't you inside? Uncle Randy wants to toast you," Lillian said, appearing behind him.Jordan hadn't tucked the bottle away.Lillian's eyes landed on it, and she was attracted to its odd desi
