I’m rounding off my work for the day when the call that changes everything comes in on my phone. It is my assistant who is calling.
“Hello, Helen,” I say into the phone.
“Boss, boss! I’ve got some really big news.” Helen exclaims into the phone. I can hear the excitement in her voice, and it rubs off on me instantly, but I try my best to keep calm.
“Of course, what’s the news?” I ask.
“She’s the one, boss. The lady is the one we’ve been looking for. The sample you sent matches the DNA we’re working with perfectly. Boss, this is huge! Our search is finally over.” Helen exclaims excitedly.
“This is such wonderful news, Helen. You’ve just made my evening, and in fact, my entire month as well! Alright, I want you to find out where she is right now, and send me her location.”
“Sure, boss. I’ll get on it immediately.” She replies, and then we end the call.
I make quick work of rounding off my work in the office, and by the time I’m done, Helen has sent Lucy’s location.
I worked late today because of the time I spent at Lucy’s accident scene, and I lost track of time, so by the time I finally leave the office, it’s already dark and it's raining heavily as well.
I would have postponed meeting with Lucy until the next day, but something baffles me, and that is the fact that she’s not at her residence at that time of the night.
In fact, she’s in a somewhat shady part of town. I have to make sure that all is well with her, something I highly doubt, because of the state in which she was that morning when I left her, and the fact that her husband turned out to be a two-timing asshole.
It turns out that my instincts, which never fail me, are right this time as well. I find Lucy after a while, but she’s in bad shape.
She’s the only person on the street, which is obviously because it’s raining, and she’s pulling along a heavy-looking suitcase with her.
She’s also drenched from head to toe and looks a sorry sight.
“What on earth does she think she’s doing? She’s going to catch a cold and fall ill.” I mutter to myself.
She doesn’t seem to notice my car following her, so I park it and get out in the rain to walk up to her.
I get soaked to the skin in a matter of seconds immediately I get out of the car, because of how heavy the rain is, and I wonder to myself how long she must have been walking under it.
“Lucy! Lucy!” I call out her name several times, over the loud sound of the splattering rain.
Finally, she stops walking and turns around slowly to face me, looking as white as a ghost, with her hair plastered to her skull, and her eyes as round as saucers.
She looks incredibly frail, lost, and confused at that moment, and I feel so sorry for her. I’m also glad for her sake because of the wonderful news I have, but this is sure as hell not the time for that.
I open my mouth to say something, but right at that moment, her eyes roll up in her head. I spring forward as I realize what is about to happen, and manage to catch her at the last minute before she lands on the ground in a faint.
There’s only one course of action to take since I can’t leave her alone under the rain out here in this shady neighborhood.
So, I gather her up in my arms and take her to my car, where I settle her limp body in the backseat.
Then I go back for her suitcase and drop it in the trunk of my car before driving back to my hotel. On the way there, I call for a doctor who arrives a few minutes after we get to the hotel and examines her.
“She’ll be fine. She passed out from exhaustion, coupled with depression, I believe. All she needs is a lot of rest, and she’ll be good as new.” The woman tells me grimly after examining Lucy, stating what I already suspected was the case.
Not long after, the doctor leaves, and I’m left alone with Lucy. She’s still unconscious, which is good because I have a feeling that once she wakes up, the last thing she’ll want to do is rest, so it’s better that she gets enough rest now.
As I settle down to wait for her to wake up, I spy some official-looking documents hanging out of the handbag that she had on her shoulder when I found her.
The documents are soaking wet from the rain, so I remove them from the bag to lay them out on the table to dry properly, because I'm sure she doesn’t want them destroyed.
When I glance down at the documents, I see that they’re divorce agreements, and I’m surprised.
“That was quick …” I think to myself.
Her husband is even more of a douchebag than I originally thought if he’s divorcing her so soon, after embarrassing her the way he did that night.
My train of thought is interrupted when I hear a low moan come from the bed, where Lucy is lying.
I look back to see that she has sat up on the bed and is rubbing her eyes while trying to get her bearings. Her eyes widen when she sees me.
“Hello, Lucy. How are you feeling?” I ask her, but she continues to stare warily at me, as though she’s trying to remember who I am.
I can tell the second she remembers who I am, because her shoulders sag with relief, but she still looks cautious, as she should be.
“Hello, uh … Nathan, was it? Where am I? What am I doing here? The last thing I remember was walking down a road and trying to get a good shelter.” She says.
“Yes, I found you walking on the road, but you fainted and I brought you here. I also had a doctor examine you. You fainted because you were exhausted, but thankfully, the doctor said you’ll be fine.”
“Oh … Ah, I think I remember now. I remember you walking up to meet me in the rain. Thank you for helping me for the second time today. I’d like to assure you that I'm not always a damsel that needs saving, but the past few days have been really rough on me.” She says, trying to smile, but failing miserably, and my heart goes out to her.
“You're welcome, and it’s a pleasure. Would you like something to eat? To drink?”
“Oh, no! I can't impose on you any more than I already have. I have to go.” She says, getting out of bed, and picking up her handbag.
Then she picks up her suitcase as well and heads for the door, which is locked.
“You can’t go, Lucy,” I tell her, making my voice as gentle as possible so as not to scare her.
She ignores me and turns the door handle, only to find it locked, then she turns to stare at me, her eyes as wide as saucers.
“Please come and open the door.”
“I can’t let you leave yet, Lucy,” I tell her, getting up from where I’m sitting and heading towards her, at which point she begins to panic.
“Why not? Oh, my goodness! Who exactly are you and what do you want from me? Oh, God! Did Austin and Amy hire you to kill me or something? Why don’t …”
“It’s nothing like that, Lucy. You can’t leave because I’ve been looking for you for so long …” I tell her.
Lucy’s POV I'm fairly certain that I may have gotten myself into some deep shit. First of all, I wake up in a strange room with no idea of how I got there. As though that isn’t enough, this man, with whom I find myself locked in the room, isn’t letting me leave. My heart is pounding heavily in my chest. On the one hand, Nathan doesn’t look like someone who is out to hurt me, but then, looks are deceptive, and one can never tell.Who on earth is this man, and what does he want with me? I already thanked him for his help, so what more does he want from me? The way he keeps staring at me ... like he knows something I don’t, leaves me feeling greatly unsettled, and then there are the ominous-sounding words that he just uttered.“You can’t leave. I’ve been looking for you for so long …”“Okay, well, I don’t know what that means, but I hope you know that holding me here against my will is kidnapping, which is a crime,” I tell him, feigning indifference. However, my eyes are darting arou
Austin’s POVI find the fact that Lucy is nervous because I told her she can't leave yet a bit amusing, and if I’m being honest, a little bit offensive. While I’m no saint, I’d like to think that I don’t in any way look like a kidnapper, serial killer, or hitman as she accused me of being either. However, I also have to admit that she’s right to be cautious.I wouldn’t have told her about her family just yet, but since she was becoming increasingly agitated, and the doctor emphasized that she needed rest, not more stress, I had to tell her to reassure her that I don’t have any evil plans for her.Watching her face light up with different emotions, ranging from disbelief to hope, and then pure joy, is very satisfying and rewarding for me after all the work I’ve done to find her.But then she utters some words that cause me to do a double-take.“Are you my brother? I have a brother?!"The question catches me off guard. How on earth can she think that I’m her brother? That’s preposterous
Lucy’s POVI'm a nervous wreck, but for a good reason this time around. It’s been two days since Nathan divulged the fact that I have blood-related family members to me, and today, I’m finally going to meet with them. There are several unanswered questions flying around inside my head … questions which Nathan is unable, or perhaps unwilling, to answer for me. He keeps telling me that I’m going to get the answers to all my questions once I meet with my family, so I have no choice but to wait and see. From the little I can decipher from what Nathan has told me about them, and even from the way Nathan looks and acts, I can tell that my family is wealthy, and this makes me even more nervous. What on earth are they going to think of me? I have next to nothing in my name, even though Austin is well-to-do.I was his secretary before we got married, after all, and secretaries don’t make a lot of money. Whatever I have to my name is definitely going to be a grain of sand in the ocean, compare
Lucy’s POVMy birth mother and I hug each other for what feels like an eternity, as we shed tears of joy. I don’t ever want to let go of her, and from how tightly she’s holding me, I can tell that the feeling is mutual.Suddenly, I feel a hand on my shoulder, and so I pull away from my mother, at the same time that she pulls away from me. The hand belongs to my father, who is trying to comfort us both.He smiles warmly at me, and I return the smile and happily accept the hug he gives me. “I thought that it is a good idea to step in because left to your mother, she’ll stay here hugging you for a week at the very least.” He jokes, and my mother laughs.I’m glad he called her my mother, because I’ve been wondering if they’d want me to refer to them that way, and this answers my question. He is a very handsome man, and I have his eyes.“Oh, stop it, honey.” My mother says, giggling a little and swatting him playfully on the arm.My eyes well up with tears instantly again. Nathan’s POVIt’s been a long, fulfilling, and rewarding day. I'm dead tired, but also very happy. The ecstatic look on Mr. and Mrs. Lewis’s faces after I presented them with their long-lost daughter is the best thing that I have seen in a long while.I hum happily as I take a shower, and recline on my sofa to watch the news. Since I already ate a hearty dinner at the Lewis’s house, I'm not hungry. My phone rings while I'm watching the news, and I check the caller ID to see that it’s Diane who’s calling. She's the only one who calls me at this time of the night anyway.“Hello, Diane,” I say into the phone.“Hello, baby. How are you doing?” She asks me. Although I’m not comfortable with that term of endearment, I don’t say anything about it. I will find time to talk to her about how I see her as nothing more than a friend, and how she has to accept that, so she doesn’t get hurt in the long run. I can’t see her any other way, considering the fact that we grew up together, and while I'
Lucy's POVThe sun is shining through slits in the blinds of the large and luxurious room in my parent’s house when I wake up the next morning. The whole meeting still feels so surreal to me, like it’s a dream I’m going to wake up from any time now. In fact, I pinch myself to see if I'm going to wake up, but no, I don’t, because I'm already awake and this is no dream. It is my reality now. I’ve gone from being alone, with no one to call my own, to having a rich, influential family that is thrilled to find me in the blink of an eye. Happiness fills my entire being until it feels like I'm going to burst from it.Humming happily, I get out of bed and stretch luxuriously, then I head to the bathroom to brush my teeth and take a quick shower, after which I head downstairs in search of my family. I find them downstairs in the grand living room and say a general greeting.“Ah, good morning, honey. I was just about to send someone to wake you up. We’re about to have breakfast. Did you sleep w
Lucy’s POVIt’s been a few days since I got the life-changing information that I’m now a multi-millionaire, and still, each day, I wake up surprised that it’s not all a dream. This morning, my mother and I went shopping for clothes for me. In my haste to leave Austin’s house, I didn’t take all of my clothes, and even the few I took along do not befit my new status as a multi-millionaire, or so Lucas tells me, playfully, of course.I know that he’s right, though, and since it isn’t my intention to embarrass my family members, plus I now have more money than I would ever know what to do with, I let my mother take me shopping for new clothes. Now, we’re on our way to a shopping mall she owns, which she has been eager to show off to me.Once we get there, she shows me around the huge and classy mall, which is filled with numerous shoppers. Lucy’s POVMy nerves are shot because it is today I'm going to start learning business management, something I know next to nothing about, as an intern at Nathan’s company.I’ve only ever worked as a secretary for my ex-husband, and this role I’m training for is very different from that. The last thing I want to do is to screw up, hence the nerves. However, I'm also a little excited and eager to learn and prove myself to my parents for the chance that they’ve given me and all that they’ve done for me in the little time that they’ve known me.Thus, I arrive promptly at Nathan's company at the stipulated time. I'm dressed impeccably in blazers and tailored trousers, and my hair is professionally done. The driver that my dad assigned me drops me off in front of the building, and I step out of the car, take a deep breath, and then go into the large and impressive building. In no time, I locate where I'm to work and exchange pleasantries with the people I’m to work with. Diane’s POVI’ve always hated it whenever a new woman starts working in Nathan’s office, especially when it’s a beautiful woman. So you can imagine my surprise and disgust when I arrive at his office, and I see a beautiful, young woman, who seems to be around my age, and whom I’ve never seen before, working there. The woman even has the balls to talk to me … something almost all of Nathan’s staff are scared shitless to do, so to say I'm surprised is an understatement. When I pause and get a good look at her, my surprise turns to fear. Yes, fear …Not only is this woman beautiful, but she’s very clearly the type of woman that Nathan likes … the type of woman I’ve tried to be over the years just to get him to decide that I'm worth being with, but I can never keep up the façade for long. She has that 'good girl' look, which Nathan digs. Right now, she’s smiling at me as though we’re besties, or equals, but of course, I'm not having any of it. Just looking at her, I can tell she’s way ben
Lucy’s POVFor some weird reason, I can't get the hostile look on Diane's face off my head.I’m used to females like her, who think that they're the best thing to happen to mankind and that no one is fit to lick the soles of their feet, but still, her behaviour stings for some reason.I'm already dreading the time she's going to come out of Derek's office, and I fervently hope that I won't have to interact with her.About ten minutes after I settle down at my desk, I hear heavy footsteps approaching. When I look up, I see a handsome, tall man who looks to be the same age as Nathan, sauntering towards me.“And who might this raving beauty be?” The man drawls in a deep voice before I can speak, coming to a stop in front of my desk.I turn and look around to be sure that he is talking to me, and when I realize that he indeed is, I turn back to face him.“Uh, hello, sir. You're welcome to …”“Oh, don’t do that, pretty damsel. Don’t call me sir. You make me feel like I’m someone’s aged gra
Lucy’s POVWorking at Nathan’s office turns out to be a very great experience, as my parents assured me that it would be. Everyone’s super nice to me, so the work environment is very conducive. In a very short time, I learn so many things. I’ve always been very keen on taking on new challenges, so all of this is very easy for me.It comes as no surprise to anyone when I’m promoted to be an assistant to Nathan’s assistant after a period of internship, so that my training can advance even further.I start working in my new role, and I love every minute of this new role because Nathan is such a chill boss. One day, I'm busy preparing some documents that he needs, when a whiff of expensive perfume hits my nostrils.Looking up from what I'm doing, I see a beautiful woman who looks to be about my age saunter past me gracefully, her head held high. She has an air of importance about her, and everything about her screams ‘luxury.’ She heads straight for Nathan’s office without sparing me a gl
Nathan's POV“Hello, Nathan. How are you doing?” Mr. Ralph Lewis, Lucy’s father, asks me over the phone. The man has been nothing short of grateful ever since I found Lucy, and finding her has made me even closer to the family.“I’m very well, sir, and you?”“I’m fine as well. Listen, son, I know you’ve done a lot for my family in recent times, and I’m very grateful for that, but I have one last favor to ask from you.”“Sure, sir. What do you need me to do?” I ask him.“It’s about my daughter, Lucy. As I hoped she would be, she’s very interested in learning my business and taking over it from me one of these days. So she needs to learn a lot of business skills in a short time. I was hoping you’d help me show her the ropes. I believe that no one can teach her as fast as you can.”“Of course, sir. That’s not a problem. I’ll be glad to teach her. Do send her to my office as soon as she’s ready to start.” I reply.“Thank you, son. I really appreciate your kindness and I’m indebted to you.
