It was one o’clock in the morning, and Matt Kirby couldn’t sleep. He threw on some clothes and headed to the station.

When he walked into the station, Lawrence was at the reception desk. It looked like he was on the computer. It looked like Lawrence just had a trim. His red hair was neatly cut around his angled face. A college student was on the switchboard. She was plugging in the extra portable radios so they could charge.

“Hey, Sheriff,” Lawrence greeted. “What brings you in?”

Matt propped his arm on the reception desk. “I couldn’t sleep. Thought I roam down here and see how things are going.”
