Chapter 116

Mable had been working at Garvey’s Hotel and Bar since she was nineteen-years-old. She was now sixty-one. One more year, and she would finally be able to afford retirement. Granted it wouldn’t be a flush retirement but retired nonetheless.

She had started under the early years of Jack and Jo Garvey’s reign over the family business as a housekeeper. They were a loving and respectful mix couple. Jo was black like Mable and Jack was a white man. When they had both died, it had broken her heart. Mable still remembered how ecstatic Jo had been when she had finally conceived – and with twins. Mable still remembered the words she had said to Jo. “God gave you a double blessing for your patience and faith.” She still remembered the day they brought the babies home.

Their twin girls took over after Jack had to be admitted to a home in Phoenix for Alzheimer’s.
