"Because mine isn't trackable."

"All phones are trackable."

"Not if you know the ones to buy," Deke said. His thumbs raced over the keys, and she was impressed. She was just past the age of having gotten good at texting. She did it, but she wasn't as fast as he was.

The waitress came over with a coffee pot, and Whitney could have hugged her—or the pot. The black liquid couldn't fill her cup fast enough—or her empty stomach. Running from bad guys worked up an appetite.

Who was she kidding? She was always hungry.

The woman stood over them in a lime polyester uniform underneath a stained apron. She didn't pull out a pad to write down their order. "What'll it be?"

Deke motioned for her to go first. A gentleman.

She hadn't looked at a menu, but Whitney knew what she wanted. "A short stack, bacon, two fried eggs over easy, and rye toast."

"I'll have what she's having," Deke said, his eyes still on his phone.

The waitress left, and Whitney lifted her coffee mug with two hands, taking in as much warmth as possible. Her body was fine, but her soul was cold. What was going on? Less than a day ago, she was on the trail of a pop-up nightclub. Now, she was possibly running for her life. "What's going on, Deke?"

His gaze flicked up to her, his dark eyes growing even darker. "I'm not sure, Whitney."

That might have been the first honest thing he'd ever said to her, and it was more telling than anything else he'd shared.

A chill went through her, so she sipped more coffee. It could warm her insides, but not her core—nor her soul. "Why would someone break into your house to get at me? How could anyone even know I was there?"

"How did they know? Your phone must have been tracked."

"It's a company phone."

"All the more reason for it to be trackable. The man wants to keep tabs on you," Deke said.

"The man is my father, and I doubt he cares where I am," she said, her gaze going out the window. It was getting lighter outside, which made the place look less creepy, and she saw Deke's truck wasn't decrepit. It was old but well-maintained. Was that a metaphor for him? She'd estimated his age at somewhere in his 40s. Right now, he looked older than that.

He put his phone face-down on the table. "The man who was killed was from the governor's office."

She leaned her elbows on the table. "Wait. This really is a story."

"Whitney, stop. I'm trying to keep you safe," Deke said. He stared at her through half-lidded eyes.

Why? Why was he so concerned about her?

"Why is that?" she asked.

Deke shrugged. He sipped his coffee. His large hand dwarfed the mug. They were scarred, and his fingers were not completely straight. Seemed like he'd had a hard life. Despite that, Deke didn't seem bitter—just serious and not willing to take anyone's shit.

What had he seen in his lifetime?

"So, this guy who died," she prompted.

"Save it, Whitney. There are ears everywhere."

She looked around. A sleepy old man shoved food into his face at the counter. A bored waitress wrapped silverware in paper napkins. None of them looked dangerous. "Where?" she asked.

"Can you give it a rest for a moment?"

"No. I'm a little scared here." She hadn't meant to say it, but the statement wasn't a lie. Now that the adrenaline was gone, it had been replaced by cold dread. Not even the warmth of the coffee had punctured it. She sat in an ancient diner in some backwoods town with a man she barely knew, who seemed like he could kill her just by looking at her.

He reached across and squeezed her hand. It was warm and rough. "I've got this, Whitney. You'll be fine."

***

Whitney looked across the table at him with trusting eyes. He cursed himself. This couldn't get personal. She was a reporter—and frankly, the last person he needed in his life. He would figure this out with the help of Trent and the others. Then, she'd be gone.

But he was drawn to her.

Thankfully, he had the discipline to keep his hands to himself—well, other than reaching across the table to reassure her. Her eyes widened, her pupils dilated. She felt the same hum of attraction he had. He wouldn't touch her again unless he absolutely had to.

They finished breakfast, talking about mundane things like the weather, while dancing around the topics of dead bodies and early-morning invaders.

When they got back on the road, she had fallen asleep quickly, and Deke thanked the stars for that. He didn't want to have the inevitable conversation. He would keep things from her as much as possible. She was on a need-to-know basis. What did she need to know? That she was in danger, and this was bigger than a story about a pop-up nightclub. What didn't she need to know? That she was the first woman who had registered on his radar since Brenda.

He hadn't strung those words together in his mind until that very moment. The situation robbed him of his breath. Those feelings were something he hadn't expected. Ever. He'd hoped one day, he would settle down, but a reporter was not his ideal candidate.

He glanced her way. Her head was leaned against the window. He was about to turn onto the dirt road that led to his cabin. The sun was behind some clouds, but it was midmorning. They'd been driving for five hours. He was ready to be off the road. He needed lunch—but that could wait until he got a small fire going in the fireplace. The wood stove would be stocked but not running. Never knowing when he would need it, he'd chosen not to have someone come by and check out the place. Not knowing his neighbors was part of what made the place such good cover. Of course, they were miles away, anyway.

He turned onto the road, rutted from the rains that fell in this part of Pennsylvania this time of year. He didn't relish spending time outside in what looked to be another drizzly day, but there were chores to be done. The perimeter needed to be checked, in case an animal had broken the thin fencing around the place.

At the first rut, Whitney jolted awake. She blinked, then rubbed her eyes. "Are we there yet?"

Deke glanced her way. "Another mile."

She shifted, yawned, and then stretched. "This is a road?"

"Driveway."

"You have a mile-long driveway?"

"It's a hunting cabin," he said. Or, his bug-out place if there was ever an apocalypse—which was looking more and more likely. If the situation with the goblins worsened, he would live out there. He had a greenhouse to grow food, and animals to hunt. If his satellite phone worked, he could keep a tenuous connection to the outside world—that was assuming he would even want one if the goblins took over.

Was that their ultimate plan? He'd been pondering it for miles. His father had given him a book containing the full history of goblins, gargoyles, and fairies. He hadn't memorized it, thinking it was all ancient history. Little had he known what exactly his father had given him. He would have been reading it tonight, if he hadn't left it at his townhouse.

"Hunting?" she asked.

"No. Hunting goes on for months, and no one gets shot."Whitney blinked a few times, then looked out her window. "How many acres do you have?""A hundred."Whitney whistled. "Wow.""Have you ever lived anywhere else but Philly?" he asked. He navigated around the larger potholes, but the driveway was still a mess. It was always going to be a mess. That's why he'd chosen an old SUV as his escape vehicle. "No," she replied."Then, you're in for a treat."She frowned. "Not sure a 'treat' is what I'd call this. Are there bears?""Yes, and rumors of cougars."She shivered."Relax, Whitney. They don't prey on humans. They are closer to harmless than the men who broke into my house."That seemed to sober her up.Finally, they reached the cabin. She gasped. "It's so tiny.""I only built it for me, so we're going to have tight quarters for a while." He stopped the truck in fr

"No story?""I'll ask permission first."Deke frowned, then nodded. "I guess that's all I can ask of a reporter.""You talk about my profession with such disdain. You'll have to tell me why sometime. Right now, I want to know our current situation, and the plan."He cocked his head at her. "For someone in danger, you're awfully demanding.""I'm not going to be passive. It's not in my nature."He settled at the table, and she wiped her hands dry. "The man was murdered. He was the Assistant to the Governor of Pennsylvania—Tom Scott.""What was the assistant's name?""Derek Bonham."She sat in a kitchen chair. "The name's familiar, but since I don't write the hard news, I can't place it.""He's been in the news because he was going to testify in a trial this week—a trial for someone who was crucial to the governor's political career.""So, Derek was silenced." "Of course."Deke rubbed a hand down his face. His life had just gotten more complicated. "And it was just a coincidence Whitney was there to see the body drop?""Not a coincidence—an unfortunate happening. Might even have been a warning to her.""Why her?" he asked. The buck sauntered off, as if Deke were inconsequential. Deke walked the perimeter, checking for breaks in the wires, or trip wires that had been violated. He found none. "I don't know," Tex replied, "but there are no coincidences.""True. I haven't figured out yet how she fits into all this.""She does; we just don't know how yet. I'll do some more digging. Her father owns the newspaper she works for."Something niggled at Deke's brain. That was important. "Dig more on him.""Oh?""Nothing I can tell you with any certainty, but my gut is saying it has to do with her father." Deke leaned against a tree, suddenly tired. He'd wanted to live out the rest of his life quietly. That option had left when the body had dropped off

Deke put up his hands. "You're not mad at me." He was right, but that didn't stop her from wanting to rage at him. Her whole life had been a lie, and she needed time to adjust. He rose and strode to the kitchen, brushing past her. "Let's take this conversation up later.""It's not going to be any easier later than it is now."He glanced over his shoulder at her. "You need time to adjust."She didn't have time. Someone had tried to get into Deke's house—to get to her. "Obviously, I don't know anything about my birth parents."Deke nodded. He put a tea bag into a mug of hot water, then leaned against the counter. She wrapped her arms around herself. Would she ever be warm again? Deke handed her the mug of tea. She gripped it like it was a lifeline. "I'll have Tex investigate it," he said. "The adoption was private, so he was lucky to get even that much information."She nodded, wanting to go farther inside herself but refusing to. This was her life, and she had always tried to face it he

When she was ready, he went out ahead of her. He looked all around them. "Come on." He grabbed her hand—which was good, since she couldn't see past the light coming from the front window. He took long strides, and then they were in the woods. Her feet moved faster than she thought they could."Why aren't we taking the truck?" she asked."Because they've seen it." He didn't stop—not even when she yanked on his arm."I need to catch my breath," she said."No time, princess."The moniker chafed at her. She was no princess. "No need for insults. Whitney fell asleep partway to Center City, and Deke was happy to be alone with his thoughts. He hadn't yet discerned why he felt so strongly about Whitney, but now, he had to get down to business. The Foleys were meeting them at the safe apartment. He swiped his key card and pulled into the underground garage. Whitney stirred when he parked the truck. They hadn't been followed, as far as Deke could tell. No one could follow him into the garage unless they lived in the building. The Foleys had checked it out prior to buying the apartment from Tex.Whitney opened her eyes as he parked the car in the concrete area under the building. "Where are we?" she asked, stretching."Back in Philly, in a safe area."She nodded, but he figured she was only rolling with it because she was half-asleep. They entered the elevator, which whisked them to one of the top floors. The doors opened into a hallway with three doors. Whitney had remained quiet the whole time, which made Deke a little nervous—th

Whitney listened to the chatter around her as they all ate the food Deke cooked. He was a wizard in the kitchen. Her thoughts were all over the place, but they all seemed to come back to him. Twice during the meal, she caught him staring at her. She'd clearly interrupted a meeting, and they hadn't continued the subject at hand until everyone finished eating. Were they keeping something from her? Her reporter instincts were bruised, but she'd bet there was something they weren't saying in front of her. "So, where do we stand?" she asked as they cleared the plates.Deke settled in a chair. "I cooked. You can all clean."Whitney would have gotten up, but the kitchen was already crowded. Besides, she wanted to be the one asking questions. Her gaze turned to Deke. He wasn't making eye contact with her suddenly. Was he lying? Hmm. So far, Deke had been upfront with her. That meant the situation was getting bigger. She could ask them, or she could investigate. If she just got a hold of a com

He was humming while he worked. As if a load had been taken off his shoulders. There were no reminders of his wounds from last night."Hi," he said, turning to her.She slid into his arms as if it were the most natural thing. They'd been through something together. Even if they didn't have a bond before, the events of last night would have cemented one between them. "Hey.""You okay?" he asked."I'm okay. Dani was close and that made Ben want to turn, but something was holding him back. Was there some magic in this room that kept his abilities at bay? He didn't know that could happen. He'd never heard of it and it was a disturbing new twist to a goblin's power. He'd have to ask Donal when they arrived. Which he was pretty sure they were going to do.If Dani was here, she'd been brought here by the good guys. At least he hoped. The men playing cards had left. He could feel his wounds healing, but not as quickly as they should have. Something was definitely blocking his powers. A goblin flung open the door to the room. This one's stench was as bad as the rest of them.He wore a suit in his human form, but it didn't mask his evil. Ben glanced up at him with his one unswollen eye. This wasn't going to end well for the goblins, and if he could, Ben would extract as much information from them as possible. They still thought they were winning. The good guys were going to win again. Ben had no

"So, I have to be touching Ben for our power to work?""Yes, and he needs to be in gargoyle form.""There's nothing else I need to do?" she asked. She looked at each one of them. As much as she couldn't grasp it all, she wanted the whole story. All of it."Just hold onto Ben."***Dani bounced around in the front seat of the van as Tex drove it from paved streets to ones with potholes and ruts. For the taxes they paid, the roads were the worst. Dani's thoughts immediately went to her friend with cancer. That was the biggest incident. It wasn't the only one. A few more flooded her brain. "Yes.""Well, those are your fairy powers. You can wish something for someone else and it comes true. Something good of course. You are unable to use your powers for bad things."Powers? She had powers? "Can I wish Ben back here?""It's not that simple," Sean said, taking up the explanation. "Because goblin magic is strong, you can't overcome it. Well, not alone."She sat straighter. "So, how can I?""With your gargoyle."She looked around the table again. "Ben?""Yes. Ben's your gargoyle," Sean said.Okay. She needed a little more. "Can you give me some background?""Back before humans—or we think humans with goblins' help—ruled the world, there was magic. Gargoyle and fairies formed an alliance against goblins. A few elite families of gargoyles were assigned to protect a specific fairy. That is still true, but most fairies have no idea they

Meg hugged Dani. "You look as if you are carrying the weight of the world. You aren't alone anymore, Dani. We're all here."The idea warmed her. She hadn't had a tribe since college. Many of her friends had moved away to find jobs in other cities. She'd stayed put, thinking this was her home. It was, even if she had no family here. Instead of fostering new friendships, she'd launched herself into her career. Speaking engagements had followed, but her life was a little empty."That's nice to know, Meg. Thanks.""Ben might be done by now. He'll be looking for you.""Me?"She wasn't sure if he would be or not. She didn't know where she stood with Ben. Or exactly why it mattered to her. Before their event, she'd been happy to go through life alone. Sort of happy about it.
