NELINA
My eyes widened as I saw the McLaren car. I'm guessing it's the McLaren 650s 2016. Should I check? I drew nearer to sneak into the vehicle and confirm my guess. It's him. "Hi" I waved a hand as if I knew him that much.
The guy raised a hand in response. "Get in," he said as he opened the passenger's door for me.
I froze and was hesitant to step into his car. But I can't be late. Okay, fine. When I stepped into his car, he showed a broad smile at me. It was awkward, so I nodded and revealed a half-smile. Thank GOD I won't be late. I immediately fastened my seatbelt as soon as I sat while he maneuvered the car again.
"Nice car," I said, scrutinizing the white McLaren. His car smells of expensive perfume.
"Thanks, so which way?" He smiled briefly before looking straight ahead.
"In the Trinity Building," I said, flipping my hair.
"What is it in there? If you don't mind."
"Meeting a client there," I answered, talking plainly as if I knew him for years. I shouldn't be in his car. But I had no choice, only to take his offer to be on time for my meeting. This is a now or never deal, so I have to make a good impression. I closed my eyes and let out a long breath.
"What's wrong?" He shifted to me and frowned.
"Nothing," I said, narrowing my eyebrows as I glanced at him. Was he bothered when I sighed?
"Don't be scared. I'm harmless." The guy said, and then he cracked; his tone was like he was teasing me.
I glared at him for seconds. I'm not scared of you, idiot. "Eyes on the road," I commanded, my hands clenched into fists. I don't care if this is your car; I still want to live. I focused my eyesight ahead, and he did the same before I heard a chuckle. Is this his habit? Do I have to deal with this idiot? I need to meet up with my clients. I reminded myself for the third time.
"I'm Royce, and you are?"
"Nelly," I retorted as I glared at him again. I remained adamant in my silence as he drove smoothly with his luxury car. I'm not in the mood to talk anymore. A few minutes passed when he initiated a conversation again.
"Sorry about that. It wouldn't hurt to talk to strangers sometimes, right? It's been a while since I haven't talked to a woman. Something tells me you're different. So, I thought I would not lose the chance to get to know you again. It was a mistake not introducing myself at the restaurant. Good thing you need a ride, and I was there," he narrated. He raised his chin as if he was proud.
My face heats when I hear his oration. Do we need to have this conversation? "Thanks, I just need a ride; I can't be late for my meeting. And don't apologize; I'm here because something tells me you're not that bad," I said, showing a half-smile. Am I too much? Slow down, girl, think about your client and the deal you have to close.
"Thank you as well."
"Who gave you your name, if you don't mind," I asked, flipping my hair. I've changed my mind; I thought I should maintain a conversation with him on our way to the trinity building.
His smile faded when I glanced in his direction. "My dad, he loves cars," he answered; his eyes never left the road.
"I could tell. That's why your dad names you after a car brand. That's cool. Maybe you have a very cool dad," I asked when a deep curiosity got in me.
"Not that cool. I didn't have too many cool experiences with my dad," he said, a brittle smile crept on his lips.
I do not need another set of conversations about his dad to realize that Royce is uncomfortable talking about the topic. To avoid the unpleasant atmosphere, I didn't extend the conversation.
"By the way, my proper name is Nelina; my dad chose this name for me."
It was awkward to keep conversing with someone unfamiliar with me, especially since I've been hiding from the world for almost two years. I just felt the need to continue talking because I couldn't stand the deafening silence in the car.
"This is the first time I have heard that name." His eyes lit up as I changed the topic. He plastered an open-lip smile again.
I have to admit, his smile is contagious. "Thanks, and yes, I think Nelina is not a common name. To me, it's not so new and not too old at the same time."
"I agree. And by the way, what do you do for a living? If you don't mind me asking," he said, licking his upper lip. This seems to be his habit, as I've noticed when we were at the restaurant.
"I've been a make-up artist for almost a year now. This is my bread and butter." This time I showed a genuine smile, not for him, but for myself. That's how proud I am of my job, my dream job.
"Good to hear that; you seem excellent at it," he said as he stared at me once more.
"How could you say that? You don't even know me." I couldn't help but giggle at his words.
"Well, I'm not into fashion, but for me, you have good taste and style. You carry yourself very well." He shifted his gaze to me, sizing me up before a corner of his mouth lifted.
It pleased me, looking at how sincere he was with his compliment. "Thank you. How about you? What do you do?"
"I have loved cars since I was a kid; I started collecting cars at a young age and spent more time with them. It was the way I started racing at an early age. I'm a professional car racer now, but I don't do it full-time," he replied with a grin on his face.
"Perhaps you inherited that from your father; you said he loves cars too. Is he a car racer too?" SHIT, I talk too much. This is not like me. I squeezed my eyebrows because I was displeased with how I acted. I shouldn't have mentioned his dad again.
He replies by shrugging his shoulders. I notice the same reaction to the mention of his dad; he stayed mute.
"Racing is cool; I love cars too," I said as my way of diverting the subject.
My brother's collection of cars was still vivid in my memory. A pleasant smile crept on my lips, reminiscing about those days. He had one of the extensive collections of cars in the city. But the smile didn't last long when the car explosion flickered on my mind. I forcefully clench my fists and squeeze my eyes shut. Again? Not now, please. I prayed in silence.
"We're here," Royce announced.
Interrupting my terrifying thoughts. Royce's voice made me shook my head out of my reverie. As my way of consoling, I wrapped my arms around myself.
"What is it?" Royce inquired. His voice had a trace of concern, which appeared to be a surprise to me. "What's the matter? What about the car? You said you love cars too," he asked as he settled one elbow on the wheel.
I had the chance to look straight into his eyes closely. His dark black, almond-shaped eyes were intensely staring at me. It made me lose track of how long we have been staring at each other. When I came to my senses, I cleared my throat to break the silence domineering between us.
"Forget about it. You know, I have an appointment to catch," I diverted the topic, anxious that I could end up blushing in front of him. The narrow gap between us made me uncomfortable. It's undeniable that he has the looks and the figure. I'm not into this now. I reminded myself.
It felt like Valentines' still; my cheeks were on fire. Slow down, girl. I reached out a hand to the door and opened it. And when I was about to step out of the car, Royce held my arms.
"Wait"
I was hesitant to look back, as I was afraid to show blushed cheeks. I was more than sure that the red apples were on my cheeks. In my peripheral vision, I saw Royce handing me my bag. "Your bag."
I closed my eyes in relief. GOD, what am I expecting? I grabbed my bag, but I didn't bother to look back. "Thank you."
"You're welcome in everything," he said before I heard a little chuckle. It forced me to look back, only to see an evil smirk plastered on his face.
Does he have to be mean? Idiot. I didn't say it out loud; instead, I pressed my lips out of annoyance.
"I hope this is not the last time."
"We never know," I said as I stepped out of the car, annoyed. What can I do? I badly need a ride.
I walked straight to the lobby of the building and refused to look back. I held my head high, balanced my shoulder while trying to keep my good posture. Swaying my left hand back and forth while holding my bag in the other. Today is going to be a good day! I did a few inhales and exhales to calm myself.
All the stress in the car with Royce paid off since I had a great client.
"Thank you so much, Ms. Jannette and Mr. Eric; you guys will never regret choosing our services."
"I know, Nelly, you are my first choice. We are grateful you are still free for our wedding day, right, honey?" Jannette shifted her gaze to the man she was about to marry. The woman's eyes shimmered as she laid her eyes on Eric.
"Of course, thank you, Ms. Nelly. Thank you for making my soon-to-be wife happy. Jannette and I are excited to have you at our wedding," he said as he pressed Janette's hand, now entwined with his.
"My pleasure, guys. Thank you for your time."
We shook our hands to seal our deal right before they left. I nodded and waved goodbye to my clients. They walked out of the lobby hand in hand, causing a sudden twitch in my heart. They are the sweetest couple. Hey, every couple is lovely. But not the one I had. I forcefully closed my eyes and shook the thought away, and I took a deep breath.
"This is life. I love what I do." As expected, I closed the deal smoothly. The only thing left was to spill the good news to Marica.
Just when I thought it was time to celebrate. I slapped my forehead when I realized my phone was not in my bag after searching in every pocket. "Oh, shit, I left my phone in Royce's car," I said it out loud, annoyed at myself.
I paced back and forth in the meeting room to figure out how to retrieve my phone. How would I contact Royce? I don't know how to get to Royce.
"He is not the kind who will steal things. He is rich, for sure. But I doubt if he has time to return my crappy phone. He wouldn't throw it away, right? What should I do?" I said to myself and forcefully shut my eyes, while I tried to think hard. I am doomed.
The good thing is that the receptionist at the lobby allowed me to call Marie after explaining everything to her. Someone picked up the phone immediately.
"Yes, Shiela, this is Nelly. I'm calling from the trinity building, and I don't have my phone now. Can you please connect me to Marica? I need to talk to her."
I listened to the other line and waited for a moment before Marie answered. "Oh, finally. We got the deal, Marie, we got it," I said, almost screaming. The receptionist stared at me, a little confused. I gave her an awkward grin.
"This is our biggest deal so far," I said in my voice, raising a few decibels. I listened to Marie's congratulatory message for me.
"Yes, thank you. I'll see you soon." I was about to hang up when she asked about my phone again. "Let's talk about that as soon as I get there."
I cut the phone call and thought to myself a better way to explain how I end up with a stranger. What if she would assume I was dating? "Fuck, that shouldn't be my concern."Hi, thanks for following this story. If you like the story's flow, please consider following as it's getting fun and exciting. ROYCE I checked on my wristwatch as I arrived at our company building parking space. Still on time, as always. When I turned off the engine, a shiny thing on the passenger's seat caught my attention. I chuckled, apprehending it as Nelly's phone left in my car. "Forgetful little doll." I took the phone and tried to open it, but Nelly set it with a password. "Okay, let me try to enter two passwords. Hmmm… let's try 143444 - I LOVE YOU VERY MUCH, BABY." I cracked up at the thought of the meaning of the numbers. CRAZY. "Wrong password? Let's shoot 333314 - YOU ARE THE ONE I LOVE." I breathed a sigh of frustration after I took a second shot. But on second thought, I can make us
NELINA "So, how was it?" Marie started as I hopped in her car. She stared at me under scrutiny like I was a murder case suspect. "Was he nice to you? Did you get your phone?" She added. I release a long breath as I flip my hair, easing the tension. Having no intention of saying anything about the guy. But, knowing Marie, she will never stop until I give her all the details. "Okay, I'll tell you everything," I said, raising my hands in surrender.
NELINA "What is it?" It was on time that mom came over, so near that I was caught off guard. I immediately shut the laptop and forced a fake smile on my face. Before I could open my mouth. "I knew it," Mom interrupted my thoughts; she seemed to read my mind. "Yes, mom?" I look at her in confusion. "It's about your dad, isn't it? Are you looking at your dad's diagnosis from his doctor and physical therapists?" Mom inquired as she drew closer to me. I nod in confirmation. "But it's not dad's diagnosis that worries me," I said, diverting the topic because mom doesn't have to know what I do. "In fact, I think he is impro
NELINA Carrying the duffel bag with the things that I prepared last night, I spotted mom in the kitchen, cleaning. "I have to go to the gym, mom," I said as I drew nearer. Mom knows I'll be having a workout session first thing in the morning before I go to work. So I shared my frustration with getting in shape again and asked for her thoughts about it. And as expected, she agreed and was very supportive of the gym workout. "Take care," mom said as she patted my face. "No worries. Hmmm...mom, this is what happens when you watch too many movie series on Netflix. Neglecting to clean the kitchen after dinner." This is how I tease mom, as I turn to leave. "I can do this. Enjoy getting fitter," she said, shaking her head.
NELINA "Hi, Nelly, we meet again," he said, bending over to get my wallet from the floor. I dropped it when he bumped into me. I didn't say a word, except I tried my best to calm down. Did this man mean to bump at me? I know he looks on his way. "Are you okay?" he asked, still wearing the evil smirk. "I'm sorry for bumping at you." His grin almost confirmed that he meant what he did. His beautiful pair of white teeth flashed. I don't know why, but this is my favorite amongst the smiles he showed me. But still, he bumps at me. The audacity. Is he admitting that he means to bump at me? The red apples are on my cheeks now, for sure. "It's okay," I said
NELINA "Not again." I turned back to look at the man behind the voice to confirm it was correct. It's him, again. How could I say NO? I can't be late. "Hey," I said as I drew nearer to the car. Royce raised a hand in greeting, opening the door for me. I didn't hesitate because I only have 15 minutes before my breakfast meeting with Marica. "I'll put your bag in the back compartment." I suppressed the guilt inside for not saying yes to his offer. Maybe tomorrow. "Thanks, I thought I was gonna be late for my meeting," I said as I made myself comfortable while fastening
NELINA I noticed he immediately lowered down the speed. He looked straight ahead, and I did the same. "I'm sorry about that, but you shouldn't worry. I'm a professional, I told you." "I know, it's just me. I had a traumatic experience almost two years ago," I said as I bowed my head and clasped my hands together, easing the tension. "Care to share that?" In my peripheral vision, Royce was glancing at me back and forth. I let out a long breath when I lifted my head. "My brother and my dad were in a car accident almost 2 years ago." I paused and pressed my lips together. Royce seemed to be attentive as he drove the car at the right speed.
ROYCE I genuinely think I made a great decision to have my breakfast in the potion cafe. I've been to many city cafes, but the potion cafe instantly became my most favorite. The place had a lovely ambiance and was not crowded like the fast-food restaurant where I first met Nelly. Not complaining. If not for that little curiosity, I wouldn't meet the beautiful woman I get to stare at while having my morning meal. It's not that I haven't been to a fast-food restaurant before. Only it was on our high school campus several years ago. To my surprise, my appetite was good. Probably because I came from a morning workout or probably not. I had french toast and egg salad for breakfast. When I was full enough and finished my coffee like the usual breakfast at my condo, I constantly sneaked a look at Nelly a few tables away from me. Perhaps the beautiful view has contributed t
NELINAEverything changed from where I stood. The tragic event remains in my memory, but justice has been served, so it felt better. I was looking at where my brother died 5 years ago.I lit a candle and brought white roses for my brother Mark. He sure smiles back at me as we finally commit justice for him.My anxiety was gone. For years I couldn't stand visiting the exact place. I was too scared to be bombarded with the horrible incident that gave me nightmares for years. But everything was in the past. I healed myself with the help of those who genuinely love and support me.The executives tried to appeal but failed to twist the truth and even lower the sentence. They will be stuck in prison for the rest of their lives. And obviously, they were all removed as executives in Sunny Corporations.Lexxi, Mia, and Arya didn't bother to argue with us again. My wish is that they have learned their lessons. I never meant to take revenge wrongly; I only wanted justice for my family."I'm so p
NELINAOne morning Marica called me. She wasn't in a good mood; I could tell by the tone of her voice."Besty, what's wrong?" I asked her."It's bad news.""Tell me.""I can't proceed with filing a case on anybody regarding the accident. The man driving the Ferrari was shot dead a day after the incident, and now the police have no lead on who could be the mastermind. It was a dead end.""Oh, Marica, I'm sorry to hear that.""The police just found out recently. They couldn't trace the car anymore; they suspected it was chopped and sold apart. Those bastards thoroughly clean up the mess they did.""They are so good at doing this. Don't worry, besty, we will surely find justice in another way.""What do you mean?""You know what I meant. The trial is ongoing, and we have a higher chance of winning. The sentence should be enough for them to be in prison.""Yes, I'd love that.""Besty, I am free for today. Well, I am always free since I don't have regular work. I want to visit you if you n
ROYCEThe first day of the trial has arrived. I was preparing my clothes when I got a call from Nelly."Hello, baby, how's your morning?""Not so fine," Nelly said weakly. It alarmed me to hear her that way."What's wrong? Are you worried about the trial later? Don't be; we have a strong chance of winning. I've talked to our legal team.""No, it's not that. I'm worried about you. Someone called me and said Mr. Gonzalez withdrew the charges against you, and he would expect us to do the same. I stood firm and told him we would continue the fight.""Baby, you did the right thing. We will fight and win. There's nothing to worry about. Was it Mr. Gonzalez who called?""No. And he was using a different number. But I'm sure he was tasked by Mr. Gonzalez. I mean, who else could it be?""Don't worry about that, baby. We had predicted he would withdraw the charges against me. He has too much in his hands now. He can't bear another problem, especially with me.""Yeah, but I'm worried for you. Mr
NELINAI gently shook Royce's shoulder to wake him up."Baby, I have to go."Royce had a little movement on the third time I shook his shoulder. His lips parted, and he talked like a baby. He opened his eyes little by little, and as soon as his sight landed on me, he smiled."Good morning, baby. What time is it?" He asked, grabbing me on my waist and pulling me close to him."Baby, stop. It's almost 8 in the morning; mom and dad must be worried. Besides, you still have to go to your company.""Hmm…it seems too early to work. We can spend an hour staying in bed. What do you think?""We can't; I have to go. Let..."Royce kissed me before I could finish what I had to say. I couldn't find the strength to protest as he was deepening our kiss. Royce succeeded in getting me to stay in bed for an hour. Before heading to shower, I checked local news online to see if there was an update about the charges we filed against the Sunny Corporations executives. Since they are well-known men, the pres
NELINA"Nelly, who is it?" Marica asked casually."It's the same number as yesterday.""Take it; let's hear what he has to say this time," Royce said.I swiped the screen to answer the call and then put it on speaker mode. We were all attentive in listening to the other line. "Nelly, you didn't listen to what I said the last time I talked to you. Let's make a deal. You stop the cases against Mr. Robert Gonzalez and the other executives, and we will withdraw the case against your boyfriend. You surely won't like having your boyfriend locked in jail. Do you?" The man, in a rough voice, laughed. He sounded like he was mocking me.His confidence in getting Royce in jail was on another level: he scared me to death and could not speak. Royce gently squeezed my shoulder; it took me out of reverie. He grabbed the phone from my hand."You cannot threaten us just like that. If you think you have what it takes to win this war, show it in court, not here. Mr. Chairman, you won't be bragging abou
NELINAI nodded to the bodyguards standing in front of Marica’s hospital room. I assumed Leo and Marica had hired security personnel just as Royce suggested last night. Four of my bodyguards join them in watching outside the room.I knocked on the door and patiently waited for Leo to open it for me. It took him so long that my naughty thoughts ran wild. “They couldn’t do it here,” I whispered and tried not to giggle. I didn’t want the securities to look at me like I'm an idiot.I hated myself for coming up with dirty thoughts in just a little while standing at the front door. By the time Leo opened the door, he looked at me in confusion. His hair was a mess which fed my naughty thoughts about him and Marica.“What’s wrong? What are you smiling at?”“Nothing.”Leo bobbed his head. “Come on in. Marica and I have been waiting for you.”I followed Leo and the look of Marica’s bed wasn’t helping with my dirty mind. The blanket was a mess and even Marica’s hair.“What are you laughing at, s
NELINAFirst thing in the morning I got a call from Royce. It brightens my mood to see his name on the screen of my phone. “Good morning, baby, why so early?” I answered as I sat on my bed and rested my head on the headboard.“I only want to check my baby following what happened last night. Did you get another call from the same man?” Royce asked in his husky morning voice.“No calls from him anymore and I hope he won’t be calling again. I hate the sound of his rough voice. It sent chills in my body.”“Baby, don’t be scared, I got you. You and your family are guarded. I added security personnel so no one could ever harm you. And one more thing, I already asked someone to trace the number if there’s anything we could get which will lead to the investigation.”“Thanks for the security. Regarding the sim card. What if he already threw it?”“Well, we can surely find another way to trace him. Anyway, we are certain he is one of the culprits, or he has been paid to do it.”“Same thoughts.”
NELINAMarica and I looked at Royce and Leo with our mouths falling open. Their reactions were unexpected. We laughed in unison, seeing how worried Royce and Leo were; both of them stared at us in confusion.“Is this a game? Girls, why are you crying?” Royce asked. He seemed relaxed by then.“No, baby, it’s just a sudden burst of emotion after sharing some of our recent experiences. You know, about my family and the incident today.” I didn’t mention Marica’s family matter as I thought she wouldn’t like discussing it in the hospital.“Can we have our coffee now?” Marica asked excitedly.“Sure,” Leo said as he handed Marica’s coffee, next was mine. Both of them were seated on the sofa while I stayed by Marica's side, sipping my coffee. The hospital room was spacious enough to have a sofa set and dining area beside it. It appeared neat and elegant with white paint, and a modern and luxurious interior.“God, it’s so good. This helps me relax.““Seriously, besty?”“Yeah, it does help me ca
NELINAIt took us almost 30 minutes to drive to Arturo Medical Center. Four of the bodyguards came with us inside the hospital. Royce and I hurried to the front desk, and I immediately asked the staff in charge.“Ms. we are looking for Marica Lopez. She was admitted just an hour ago and our friend told us she’s still in the emergency room.”The woman wearing white, probably in her mid-30s scanned the desktop immediately. She had a pleasant smile when she seemed to have found the answer. “Ms. Lopez is already in her suite room. Please head to room 309.”“Thank you,” I said as I nodded at her.“Baby, let’s go,” I said and dragged Royce on the elevator, the four men followed us. My heart was pounding in my chest even stronger with every step I made on our way to Marica’s room.“Calm down baby, we’ll get there now.”“Baby, you know I can’t. I’m so worried about Marica. My head just won’t stop thinking about the worst-case scenario.”“I’m here,” Royce said, clasping his hand on mine tightl
