Her eyes got widened, and then she frowned. Genie stared at him while battling to control the simmering fury that was wrapping her entire being. The nerve of this guy! The arrogance in his voice while suggesting her to accept his money and pretend they were together…

‘What do I say?’ she thought looking straight at him, still appalled and mad by his callousness. ‘You never took the time of day to get your head out from your ass and look at me, maybe try to understand who I am, and now you ask me what do I say about your proposal? I would say not in a billion years, you pompous, patronizing bastard! I would say stick your proposal where the sun doesn’t shine. I'd say up yours, you arrogant prick! I wouldn't spend one hour alone with you, let alone three days and three nights! Not even if my life would depend on it!’

“Dr. Beaumont, I'm sorry, but I absolutely can't accompany you to the medical conference in L.A.,” was what Genie actually said, congratulating herself on her silkily smooth voice.

“Oh… My bad… I never took into consideration the fact that your boyfriend would object to this sudden and most unusual request from my part…”

“No, isn’t like that… I don't have a boyfriend. And, just to be clear, even if I had a boyfriend, I would still call the shots and make my decisions,” she replied pretty determinedly.

“I didn’t know, I just assumed that your rejection was because you were…”

Phoenix stopped talking. His green eyes locked with her grey eyes and that went on for a few seconds. Then he lowered his gaze and shook his head totally bewildered.

“If there isn’t a boyfriend, then why are you rejecting my proposal? I don’t understand…”

“It’s about my other job… you know, the place where I am waitressing during the weekend… I wasn't able to work last weekend because of some small health issues. If I let my employer at the cafe down again this weekend, I'll lose my job there, and I simply can't afford that.”

She couldn't afford to lose this job either, which was why she was being so diplomatic and not yelling in his face to go to hell. Genie would have just loved to tell the sweet, considerate doctor exactly what he could do with his proposal.

“I understand… Tell me, Miss Mitchell, how much do you earn in one weekend?” he asked watching closely her facial expression.

“Why… Why are you asking me that, Dr. Beaumont?”

He sighed and raised his eyebrow.

“Just answer the question, please, Miss Mitchell.”

“200 dollars, plus the tips.”

“I see. How long would it take for you to get another job like the one you have now if agreeing to my offer would make you lose it?”

“What? Oh, I... I couldn't say exactly. Sometimes you can be lucky, but it could take weeks and weeks.”

“Maybe… let’s say… Three months tops?”

“Y-yes… I guess.”

Genie was staring at him completely confused about the whole speech Phoenix just made. What was he getting at? Why didn't he just let the matter drop? She wasn't going to say yes, no matter how much he offered her.

Phoenix picked up a small calculator lying on his desk.

“Ok, so let’s just do the math then and see a few numbers,” he said looking at the small display. “Based on what the numbers are saying, Miss Mitchell, 13 weeks times 200 makes 2600 dollars,” he calculated aloud. “I would assume a girl like you would get plenty of tips, so I'll go up to 3000 dollars… upfront and in advance.”

His arrogance was absolutely disturbing. She clenched her fists since the desire to punch him right into his face was so great now. Jared… Phoenix… both of them were so similar.

“What do you say to that, Genie? Not bad for three days' work, don’t you think so? More than enough to make ends meet until you get another job.”

His use of her first name didn’t escape Genie. This liberty sealed his fate even more than his demeaning offer. ‘You think you got me in your pocket, Doctor?! Well, think again!’, she thought giving him a cold look.

“I'm sorry, but I must refuse again, Dr. Beaumont. I'm simply not a good enough actress for the part you have in mind for me. I think Nicole's right. I think you should hire yourself a professional. An escort would absolutely take you up on your offer in an instant and without questioning.”

“But I don't want a professional, Genie,” he returned coolly. “I want you. You’re absolutely perfect for what I have in mind.”

Again, she just stared at him, her mouth going dry. ‘My God, if I didn't know him better, I might think that he really means every single word he says,’ Genie said to herself.

“Maybe I should clarify that last statement,” he went on drily, a single eyebrow lifting at her obvious surprise. “The reason I said those things to you specifically is because I know that underneath your oh, so cool politeness you really can’t stand me. I have no wish to have to fire you afterward because you've stupidly fallen in love with me. On top of that, I would imagine that in the right clothes you could be quite lovely.”

His eyes drifted down from her face to the swell of her breasts.

“Yes... Quite lovely... I can see it already.”

Genie didn't know which part of his speech infuriated her the most. Certainly, the condescending and offensive 'quite lovely' kept going round and round in her head.  Even so, she was positive that if she set her mind to it, she could make him regret this day and this stupid proposal until his last day on this earth! ‘Phoenix Beaumont, be careful what you wish for... you just might get it!’

“Aren't you afraid that my… dislike might show through?” Genie asked through gritted teeth. “That it might ruin your little game?”

“No, not one bit worried. I have great faith in the acting ability of women, yours especially. Besides, I never take out women who gush all over me. Of course, under the circumstances, I will only expect you to pretend to be a friend, not my real lover. Consequently, I will change the booking to twin rooms.”

She had a hard time hiding her contempt toward this arrogant prick. So, Erika had been expected to sleep with him during this little trip, to play the part of his wife without ever expecting to truly get the part. Real charming from the Doctor’s part!

Even if Jared betrayed her and forever change her life, at least he won her heart before expecting her to become his lover. Nothing had been too much trouble… flowers, chocolates, candlelit dinners. He'd swept her off to bed with sweet words ringing in her ears and promises of together forever. He hypnotized her like the snake he was.

While Phoenix Beaumont promised his women nothing... except a cold-blooded, machine-like performance between the sheets. ‘And knowing all this, why do I find myself suddenly wanting to experience that machine-like performance? Why for pity's sake? It goes against everything I'd ever believed about myself.’

Heat rushed into her cheeks at the appalling thoughts that sprang into her mind.

“I'm sorry,” she said, flustered now. “I can’t play this game... I-it's quite out of the question. I simply can't.”

“Maybe you should think some more at my proposal,” he bit out. “I don’t see anything bad in what I’ve asked you to do. I would have thought 3000 dollars would have smoothed over any antipathy you felt towards me. Believe it or not, I can be quite likable when I want to be.”

‘Likable’? Genie didn’t know that this word was even present in Doctor’s vocabulary. Sure, he was likable like sand between the sheets. She looked at him but said nothing.

“Ok… Look, don't say no straight away. Think it over and give me a call on Sunday night around eight. Nicole will be out, so you don’t need to worry about any awkwardness.”

Genie decided that it would be much easier to refuse for the second and last time over the telephone. It was hard to sound convincing when one was blushing and stammering like a schoolgirl. And when underneath one was insanely tempted to say yes. ‘Genie, girl, you are definitively going mad!’

“Alright, Dr. Beaumont,” she agreed shakily. “I will call you on Sunday, around 8 pm.”

When the beginnings of a smug smile pulled at her employer's disdainful mouth, Genie's heart immediately stopped its stupid fluttering. He believed she'd say yes, that the money he'd offered would override any doubts she might have.

Genie's heart hardened further as she recognized that he might even suspect that underneath her surface hostility she was sexually attracted to him. This last suspicion closed the door on the subject. Nothing on earth would ever make her say yes now! Absolutely not one thing! Not now, not ever!

The old lady was brokenhearted. Genie was standing on the bed trying to comfort Miss Rowland. That weekend has been the absolute worst for Genie, for so many reasons. It all started with her quitting her waitressing job after her boss put his sleazy hand on her ass one time too many. Then, on that same Saturday night, some thug broke into Miss Rowland's room. The poor old lady was so distressed that Genie spent the whole Sunday trying to comfort her.“It's going to be alright, Miss Rowland,” Genie said while holding her hand after the police had finally left the house. They were sitting in Miss Rowland's room, which was the biggest and best in the ancient old boarding house, its large window overlooking the small flower garden. Unfortunately, it had been this same window that had given the thief easy entry into the downstairs room.&nb

“Since I have nothing to do for the evening, let’s talk a little bit more about what I’m expecting for the money I’m paying you,” Phoenix continued abruptly. “First things first… Your clothes.”“My… clothes?” she repeated blankly, her mind still back on her disturbing weakness for the Doctor. “What about my clothes?”“I suppose that you do own something other than that black skirt and white blouse you wear every Friday, don't you?” Genie thought of all the designer clothes hanging up in her wardrobe in her father’s house. Such wonderful outfits, timeless classical styles. She didn't doubt they would still be where she left them. She would have no trouble getting them if she went during the day when her father was at the office.“Actually, I have quite an extensive wardrobe,” she replied coolly

The week, which usually dragged when she spent it searching unsuccessfully for a full-time job, had simply flown. Any spare minute had been taken up with alterations to her clothes. Hems had been taken up or down, and seams let out where possible.“Tell me again the name of the place you're off to, child?” Miss Rowland asked as she watched Genie packing the freshly washed and pressed outfits.“Ritz-Carlton Hotel, in Los Angeles,” she replied, smiling as the old lady maneuvered the chair closer just by pressing a button. In just two short days she'd become a real expert, whizzing up and down the hallway and rarely bumping into anyone anymore. Seeing Miss Rowland so happy made the sacrifice of the coming weekend worthwhile.'It's one of the most expensive hotels in the city.”“And what exactly is it you have to do there?”&

The taxi driver let Genie in front of the clinic after taking almost all the money she had in her purse. She sighed, then glanced at her watch. She arrived there too early. Taking a deep, steadying breath, Genie picked up her suitcase and entered the clinic. Her stomach began to flutter as she made her way across the coolly tiled floor towards Phoenix’s office. When she found herself in the waiting room, Genie heard a little voice in her head. ‘Don't go,’ it said. ‘Run! Run now!’ Run? But how could she? She'd been paid, Phoenix knew her address, and she was almost broke. There was nowhere to run to… She took a deep breath to calm down. Genie couldn't help being a bit nervous about the weekend

“What was wrong with that little girl?” Genie asked abruptly, in order to break the awkward silence that seemed to have developed. They'd only been on their way a few minutes but it felt like an eternity to Genie. She was much too aware of Phoenix. She had been aware from the moment he'd taken her down to the darkened basement car park and personally handed her into the passenger seat of his BMW. She had quivered at his touch, her fears of blindly responding to this man well and truly founded. He looked at her for a second that his eyes turned to the road ahead. Her question puzzled him for a moment.“Oh, you mean Susie. She has scoliosis. Her spine is curved... to the left. About seventeen degrees.”“It sounds very serious.”“Maybe. Maybe not. Once again, they drew up at some traffic lights, a perplexing intersection on the western outskirts of the city. Phoenix finally took the right road and soon they were on the expressway south. Genie knew well the hotel and she had seen photos of the club where all the guests were invited to unwind after participating in the conference. It was the kind of location where her father loved spending time. Under other circumstances, Genie would’ve been really looking forward to her stay there. The meals were sure to be exquisite and it would be wonderful to be pampered for a change. But she knew that it won’t be easy to relax while pretending to be something she wasn't and worrying all the time about when Phoenix might kiss her, or something equally hazardous. It was one thing to hide this unwanted at

Genie grabbed Phoenix's sleeve before he could get down from the car.“Wait! Who's Henry?”“An esteemed colleague, so be nice to him… But not too nice,” Phoenix added drily. “My lady friends not only don’t gush over me, but they also don’t gush over other men.” ‘I bet they don't,’ Genie thought ruefully as she let Phoenix go and waited for him to open her door. ‘They wouldn't dare.’ Not that they'd be inclined to gush over another man when with Dr. Beaumont. No other man would measure up. Physically, at least. Genie wondered what exactly had happened between Phoenix and Whitney which had embittered the doctor so. She couldn't imagine any woman passing him over for the chubby man she'd just seen. Even ten years ago,

Their turn to approach the busy reception desk put an end to their provocative sparring, by which time Genie's delicious defiance had begun to give way to a churning nervousness. Phoenix was attracted to her, she realized as she stood there next to him. She could feel the heat beneath his bruising fingertips, had heard the ruthlessly sexual intent behind his declaration that he had plans for her. Suddenly she knew what those plans were. He wanted her, not just as his receptionist, but as his lover too. As his mistress. Genie should have been outraged by the prospect of such an indecent proposal. Instead, she was terrified of what her answer would be, if and when he made that proposal. Phoenix was given two sets of keys to their room and a uniformed porter carried their luggage ahead of them along to the ele

I knew what she was like. What a selfish bitch she could be. But I wanted the chance to tell her what I really thought of her.”“What happened, Nix?” Genie asked. His shudder showed true revulsion.“I still can't believe what she did. She’s just sick…” He shook his head in disbelief.“How did she get into the room with you? How did she know I wouldn't be here?”“She must’ve overheard you and Ann at breakfast this morning, discussing and planned to go out. Ann dropped Genie off at the front of the hotel shortly after eleven. They hadn't spent nearly as long in the city as they'd intended, but that was alright by Genie. She still hadn't packed and was anxious not to do anything to delay their departure after lunch.“Thanks for the little brunch, Ann,” she said through the passenger window. “See you at lunch.” Ann drove off to park the car in the basement parking, while Genie was hurrying up the steps and into the hotel foyer. She moved quickly across the tiled floor and down the central hallway and was approaching the door which led out to the back when it opened abruptly and an incoming person collided with her.“Sorry,” she automatically apologized. Whitney seemed to take a moment to realize who she'd run into, while Genie could only stare at the woman. There was

When he secured both in one iron hold and began touching her again, she groaned her total exasperation.“No, don't. I couldn't bear it again. The golf course of the country club near the hotel was magnificent… green and lush, with each fairway bordered by rows of those same pines that encircled the tennis courts. Clearly, the unforgiven hot sun of LA hadn't affected it too much. “Who's going to partner whom?” Henry asked.“Oh, that’s an easy answer,” Phoenix said and smiled at Genie. “My woman is going to play with me…” ‘His woman’, ‘His love’… Those words were pure music from Heaven. She smiled back, her heart fairly bursting with happiness. It had been a marvelous day so far. It had been like this since the first moment she woke that morning and remembered what had happened the night before. It was as though a great weight had been lifted from her shoulders in telling Phoenix the truth, even better than when she'd told Miss Rowland. It

Just to save face, Jared always said he would but he never did, and soon he was spending more of my allowance, not to mention driving my car… Stupid little girl…” Genie shook her head and felt the rage, the embarrassment, the frustration coming back again, tormenting her like it happened all those endless days and nights in prison.“Every time he was using my car, he would say stuff like ‘babe, I have to go to Las Vegas for a business oppor

Even so, Genie's natural curiosity still had her glancing around the ballroom. She didn't have to look around for long. Mrs. Webster had just made an entrance, dressed in the most outrageous red satin gown Genie had ever seen. Halter-necked, it had a V-neckline in front plunging to her waist, which was cinched with a wide jeweled belt. There was no back to speak of, and the skirt was extremely tight. Once again, Dr. Simon Webster was nowhere in sight, and his cheating wife was immediately claimed for a dance by a male admirer. She went into his arms as if she belonged there, a seductive smile on her full red lips.“At least she's wearing the right color for a cheater,” Genie said tartly.“True.” Phoenix's agreement sparked some hope in Genie that his ex-flame had shown

He was lying on the rumpled bed, a sheet dragged across his lower half, his head and shoulders propped up against a mountain of pillows. He was sipping scotch on the rocks and was also staring at her, his intense green eyes glittering with a decidedly primitive desire. Everything was so… wonderfully surprising. Genie couldn’t believe how quickly Phoenix had stripped her of all inhibition. She'd never been this comfortable before, walking around naked. Now she not only did so without shyness, but she a

Fifteen minutes after the first round with lady Vamp, Genie was standing in the bathroom, biting her bottom lip as she grimaced at her reflection in the mirror. She had been staring at herself in horror for some time. The black bikini was more outrageous than ever. She seemed to be spilling out everywhere. Everything was so out of place! Sighing, Genie opened the bathroom door and backed up a bit, standing on tiptoe to get a longer view of her hips and legs in the mirror. Gritting her teeth, she half turned and glanced over her shoulders at her behind. It was appalling.“I could never wear this in public,” she muttered dispiritedly. For a second, she thought she could beat Whitney by prancing around the pool in front of Phoenix in this.“I agree.”
