The alxa-lotx vibrated with Rhobart’s anger.

It did not surprise her. Not only did she keep her magic a secret from him, but she had hurt him with it. Did he know it had been her who sent him flying into the trees? He must know. Why else would he be so angry with her? Were the others angry as well? Once she changed her clothes and made herself presentable, she would apologize.

Rhobart inhaled deeply and looked at his men. “I want to speak with Ayla. Alone.”

Eude crossed his arms over his chest and grinned. “I won’t say a word while you two talk.”

Hudde, who was standing next to his brother, added, “We will be silent as a grave.”

Rhobart narrowed his eyes. “What part of alone didn’t you understand?”

“You won’t even know we are here,” Eude insisted.

“Go do something useful!” Rhobart yelled, making Ayla flinch.

She knew he would not hurt her, but she could not stop herself from being frightened each time she heard him raise his voice. Galian used to scream at her each time he h

Rhobart growled, and Ayla swallowed hard. “You think I can’t tell you are lying? Is it because of your magic? If that’s so, then I am going to forbid you to use it!” Kerra hissed at Rhobart, and it sounded like a warning. While Ayla knew Rhobart was right, she could not let another man dictate the way she lived her life. She thought he was different, but in the end, he was like all men—controlling. She had been controlled all her life. No more! Ayla stared into his eyes. “Why do men always want to control me? First was my father, then Galian. Now you!” Rhobart opened his mouth to say something, but no sound came out. He looked at her for long moments. She regretted her words the moment they came out of her mouth. Rhobart had never tried to control her, if anything, he pushed her to do things—like riding, traveling around Nordmar, teaching her how to use a dagger, and many other things. His eyes turned to steel. “Why the fuck do you keep comparing me to them? That’s what you real

The heads belonged to Orcs? No wonder they looked familiar to her. She frowned. Were the Orcs already in Nordmar? Atlas glanced at Milton and winked. “Oh, this is going to be interesting.” “You told us to do something useful,” Eude started saying while peeling a chestnut. “So we went hunting,” Hudde continued. “We knew it was a waste of time to look for a troll in this forest. And since we couldn’t find an ogre, we found an Orc camp and killed the bastards!” “An Orc camp so close to us? Are we in any danger?” asked Ayla. Hudde flashed her a smile. “No need to worry. We killed the Orcs to protect our precious princess.” “She is not yours!” Rhobart snapped. Atlas chuckled while Milton tried hard not to laugh. Rhobart glared at them before looking back at the twins. “How many?” he asked. “Apart from the three we already killed; we didn’t find more Orcs. We did search for tracks or anything else that might indicate there were more, but the camp was small, and the Orcs were only sc

How did you know I was using magic?” Ayla asked Atlas. The twins were preparing the horses for traveling while Rhobart and Milton were writing on some parchments nearby. Ghost waited on a branch close to them. Ayla and Atlas remained on the logs in front of the campfire as Ayla still felt too exhausted to do anything other than sip the tea Milton had prepared for her. Atlas folded his arms over his chest, stretched out his legs, and toyed with one of his lip piercings. “In Tuhai, when a child turns eight years old, he is taken to the Air Palace. The Royal Mages will test the child for mana, and if he is found to have it, he will be sent to the monastery to learn how to control it. On some rare occasions, a child will be found to have, umm, let’s call it a gift. That child is sent to the Academy of War and Flying. Depending on the gift, he will either learn to be a spy, a ranger, or a Flying Knight. But to become a Flying Knight, a griffin hatchling has to choose the child as his ride

It was night when Ayla woke up. Snow was falling from the dark sky, and a cold wind was sweeping the land. Furs covered Ayla, and Kerra was sleeping beside her. Magic crystals were at her feet, keeping her warm. Rhobart and the others were talking in low voices. Ayla remained under the furs, listening to them. “I don’t like this weather. Too cold,” said Rhobart. It was the first time Ayla heard him say it was cold. “A snowstorm is approaching.” Milton spoke next. “At least we are close to the Fire Clan. If we ride fast, we can reach it by tomorrow evening,” “We leave before dawn,” Rhobart decided. “I will take the first watch,” Atlas let everyone know. A moment later, Rhobart slipped under the furs behind her. Ayla tried to snuggle closer to him, wiggling her— He grabbed her hip with his right hand. “If you rub your ass against my cock one more time,” he warned her, his voice low. She stilled. He snaked an arm around her waist and pulled her closer to him. “Do you feel bette

One of the gates opened, and a young Fire Mage with red hair appeared from behind it. He and Milton clasped their right forearms and hugged for a few moments. “My King! The Arch-Mage Semias received your parchment, and we have been waiting for your arrival,” Zayin said as he let go of Milton and took a step back. Rhobart dismounted. “Then we will go directly to him. Milton already knows the way.” “Let’s take the horses inside. The novices in charge of the stables will take care of them,” Zayin told Rhobart. Once Kerra and the horses were inside the Monastery’s courtyard, Zayin closed the gate. Three novices came and took the horses away. Grapevines grew near the courtyard’s entrance, and two novices were pruning them. Near the stables was a training area, and novices were practicing with their staffs or casting spells under the strict supervision of Fire Mages. Milton led everyone inside the Fire Monastery. The entrance was large, with a staircase that branched into two halfway

While the Paladins and Atlas joked around, the Arch-Mage looked at Ayla with great interest. “Could you share what Sarya told you in your dreams?” Ayla told as much as she could of the dreams she had with Sarya. She left out the part with the forgotten book, the Eye of Inoss, and a few other things. When she said that Sarya called her Peace-Bringer, the Arch-Mage’s eyebrows inched up. “You are the Peace-Bringer? I had hoped that another Great War with the Orcs wouldn’t happen, but I am afraid death and destruction will start soon.” “What is a Peace-Bringer?” Eude asked. “The Peace-Bringer is a woman with great healing ability. She is the one that will heal the Avatars during the long battles with the Orcs and the one that will heal the land that has been tainted with Dark Magic. During the war, her presence will bring peace to the hearts of those fighting against the evil,” the Arch-Mage explained. Ayla hadn’t realized how important her magic was until that moment. Novices and Fire Mages sat around eight large tables in the dining hall. All kinds of meats seasoned with garlic, rosemary, mustard seeds and other spices had been prepared by the mages and novices in charge of the kitchen. Sauces, mashed potatoes, green beans and mushrooms cooked in butter were placed on big, round plates next to the meat. Decanters and pitches with wine and other beverages were within arm’s reach. Rhobart, Ayla, and Milton sat at the same table as the Arch-Mage, the twins were yet to arrive. Kerra was lying at Rhobart’s feet, chewing a bone. Word of the King of Nordmar and his n’alxa arriving at the Fire Monastery had spread like wildfire. Many stopped at the table where Ayla and Rhobart sat, wanting to congratulate the King on finally finding the future Queen of Nordmar or to meet Ayla. All the attention made Ayla feel uncomfortable. She went from the girl who had been locked in her room to the woman who, together with Rhobart, would rule Nordmar. It scared her.

Before she could ask him a second time if she could join him, he had already disappeared inside the bathroom. She huffed before falling on her back. The bed kept rocking her. Didn’t she have a plant in her messenger bag that made a person sober up quickly? She rose from the bed and went to the table, and started rummaging through her bag. First, she pulled out a root that, when turned into a powder and added to a cup of tea, made a man virile. Not that Rhobart needed it. Next was a herb that could be used as an aphrodisiac. She considered making a cup of tea for him, but he had already told her he would not touch her unless she were sober. To her frustration, she didn’t find the plant she was looking for. At least the room had stopped spinning. She was about to go back to bed when Rhobart returned to the room wearing only a pair of trousers. His hair was down, and with each step he took, his muscles flexed. He looked like a— “You are so beautiful,” she said when he stopped in front

His long hair was braided, and he wore not only a cloak identical to that of Rhobart—mottled grey, green and brown but also his tunic and trousers had the same colors, making him hard to be seen in the forest.“Who are you, female?” he asked.Rhobart took out his sword and put the tip against the Elf’s neck. “Put the bow down, or else I will remove your head!” Rhobart growled. But the Elf’s eyes were still fixed on Ayla, and he did not appear to have heard Rhobart. Rhobart nicked his skin, a few drops of blood ran down his neck.“Don’t release more arrows!” the Elf yelled, lowering his bow.Two more Elves jumped from the trees—a female and a male, both blondes—landing close to Kerra before moving closer to Rhobart and Ayla. The male had a sword in his right hand, while the female had a whip on her left hip and a short sword on the right one.“She looks identical to you, Taeral,” the female said. “Except for her ears, which are human.” She sniffed the air. “But she is only part human.”

The forest felt so silent Ayla could hear her heart pounding against her ribcage. Rhobart straightened himself in the saddle, his fingers brushing the pommel of his dagger. Ayla reached inside her to that strong spring of magic—her gift from her mother or father, or perhaps both.Kerra sniffed the air, her two tails whipping violently.“We mean you no harm,” Rhobart said, his voice strong. “We are just passing by!”“Where to?” the man asked from a different tree.Ayla wondered when he moved so fast. Or so silently.“Far away from Myrthana. I advise you to do the same!” Rhobart replied.“You lie! I see you wear the cloak of a hunter while the female has a black one, like those used by mercenaries. You had your chance to leave, but I am afraid your time is up,” said the man. Ayla tried to say something, but he went on, “Release the arrows!”Kerra growled and got in an attack position.A few leaves rustled, Ayla put her right hand in the air, and a magic shield appeared around Runner and

“Runner knows you. Trust him and me. Grab the reins,” Rhobart said before handing the reins to Ayla.Rhobart put his left hand under her tunic, his thumb brushed over her peak, while his right hand drew circles on her stomach. “Rho!” Ayla moaned when his hand went down, two fingers slowly circling and pressing her throbbing core. She felt as if she would melt. Pleasure started building in her lower stomach.“Are you wet and ready for me, Ayla?” asked Rho, his voice coated with desire.Oh, she was. Rhobart’s fingers kept moving, and his lips went up and down her neck. Tension kept building inside her body.“Yes,” Ayla forced the word out of her mouth.“Had you been wearing a dress, I would have ripped your undergarments, spun you around, and have you sit on my cock. I would have Runner gallop fast, and I would fuck you until we reached the rebel camp,” Rhobart said into her ear as his fingers moved faster. Rhobart looked at Eluvene, his eyes turning cold as the stark winter. “He will never lay another finger on her again! But I need to know everything about King Amul. He is more cunning than I thought.”Eluvene’s green eyes went to Ayla. “King Amul accepted what Ayla refused,” said the Dark Mage, winking at Ayla. “I don’t know much about King Amul. He mostly spoke with King Galian and with my former Master. But since he accepted the Crown of Darkness, he stopped being a normal human.”Rhobart frowned. “What did Ayla refuse and when?”Eluvene shrugged.Between the prophecy, the Seeker, the forgotten book, and the attack on the Fire Monastery, Ayla had forgotten about her vision with Beliar. When she saw that crown on her father’s head, she hadn’t made the connection with the one she was wearing in her vision. “Nothing important,” said Ayla. And it wasn’t. “I chose you back then, and I will choose you always!”Rhobart’s gaze lingered on Ayla for a heartbeat before turning his attention to

Milton returned from the river and grabbed a bowl of porridge. “Rania is a Fire Mage novice, and Sylvar is a Snow Elf. They are n’alxaes, but the twins fucked Rania. I am still wondering how Sylvar permitted you two to live after touching what is his.”“We did not fuck her!” Eude protested.Rhobart snorted. “You only deflowered Rania... as you did with Skurja! Don’t think I forgot about my cousin!”Ayla had missed the bickering between Rhobart and the twins. When she heard the twins and Rhobart fighting for the first time, she was afraid for the twins, but as time passed, she came to understand the brotherly affection Rhobart, Milton, and the Paladins had for each other.“We might have plucked a petal or two, but nothing more!” Hudde said. “And Skurja had many petals gone by the time she was on top of me!”Rhobart folded his arms. “You mean you ripped all of Rania’s petals! And talk about Sjurka like that, and Ayla won’t stop me again from challenging you to a duel!” He looked at the

After Ayla and Rhobart completed their alxa-lotx, when she remembered the prophecy, Milton had been the first to suggest that Fire, Water, and Darkness could refer to mages. Ayla and Rhobart had spent many hours discussing it, trying to understand everything. In the Fire Monastery, when Ayla found the forgotten book, they searched for clues about Uzriel and the prophecy, but the book had yet to reveal all its secrets to her. The forgotten tome was still in her bag, together with Eude’s sketchbook, which she would burn, sketch by sketch, so that Rhobart wouldn’t get any new ideas from it. Or embarrass her with it.In the Black Tower, when Ayla and Godefray gradually started to become friends, they talked about the prophecy. Ayla had hoped the dragons would appear again in her dreams, but the last time she spoke to them had been before the fight with the Seeker. There were many things Ayla still didn’t know and wanted to learn before sailing to Korinus Island.Milton picked up a flat pe

Hudde pointed at the burning tent. “I was in the tent, sleeping with Eude, Hewe, Tizgar, and Gorn. The tent was not big enough for all five of us, and my ass was almost sticking out of it. I could have slept better, but someone refused to let me use his tent. Anyway, I was dreaming about… never mind that, when Milton set it on fire and burned my ass in the process,” he complained while turning around to show Rhobart and Ayla his burned trousers. Ayla covered her mouth and hid a smile while trying to look shocked. “This was my last clean pair too!” Thick smoke was coming from the burned tent, making Ayla’s eyes fill with tears. She flicked her index and middle finger, and a soft breeze swept through the forest, rustling the leaves of the trees, carrying the smell of smoke away from the camp. Ashes jumped on the two remaining tents, and they caught fire. Kerra came out of Rhobart’s tent with a big bone in her mouth. Drax took out a magic rune, and small grey clouds appeared above them,

Rhobart kept walking, and Ayla looked around the forest. While in Nordmar lived many dangerous beasts, Myrthana’s woods were quieter, and the animals were smaller. Even the shadowbeasts were not as aggressive as those that lived in the cold forests of the Northern part of the continent.“Earlier, when I was hunting with Kerra and Gorn, we stumbled upon a small cave. It hasn’t been used by wild creatures for some time, and furs and blankets are inside. Even some wine. I think the lumberjacks used the cave to wash because there’s a small pool inside. Would you want to go there? And while we wash away the dust from our bodies, we can also spend a few quiet moments.”It did not matter if it was only a lonely rock, as long as she was with Rhobart. Ayla nodded against his chest, his scent soothing her. “I don’t know if I told you, but I’ve missed you terribly,” she said as the sun began to set. Rhobart tightened his arms around her. “I was afraid I would never see you again.”“I will never
