THERA’S eyes remained close, but she could hear every single drop of water from the damaged faucet in Uncle Jaime’s sink. She remembered wrapping a rubber thread around it to lessen the leak before she went to bed last night. Aside from the leaking faucet, she could clearly hear the loud sound of the clock hanging in the small living room. Why was it noisy? And why does she only hear the faucet, the clock, and her own breathing?
The loud cheers of PBA fans from the pirated CDs Joshua was watching were gone. And so was Matty, her half-aspin, half-Terrier pet licking her face. What time was it? Why did her body and head hurt? Was she exhausted again? Did she finish washing Uncle Jaime and Joshua’s clothes by eleven PM?
Thera moaned. Her throat felt dry, and she could not move her body.
“Thera…” The voice was sexy. It was deep sounded… worried.
She slowly opened her eyes. She could not make out of her surroundings, but she could see a blurry figure of a man. He was towering over her.
She could not move. It was as if a heavy object was sitting on her chest. Who was this man? Why was his face blurry? Why was he watching her?
Thera started panicking. Was she going through this thing called ‘sleep paralysis?’ And this man over her… was he a ghoul or an ogre? Could he be the reason she’d die at seventeen?
No. She’s still too young. She had not experienced being kissed yet. She had so many dreams in life. She’d meet Jerry Yan first. She could not yet die. But how long should it take for the blurry face of the man to change into a monster? Scared for her precious life, she waited and counted…
eight, nine, ten… nothing.
The man did not turn into a beast. The transformation she was expecting did not happen. Her view of the man’s face became clearer.
The man watching her…
Oh. My. Gosh.
…was gorgeous.
So gorgeous.
THERA glanced at the tall man who was there when she woke up. He was standing by the kitchen counter inside the hospital room, talking to someone on the phone. He moved away when the doctor he called arrived. There’s no doubt that the man was wealthy based on the way he dressed and act. She had never seen a man in their town wearing long sleeves and a coat on days without occasion.
According to the nurse and the doctor who was taking care of her, she was hit by a car while crossing the street. Was this the man the reason why she was bedridden? Her arm had a cast, and she was wearing neck support.
Thera could not help a smile when the man turned to her unintentionally. She saw his creased forehead, then looked away afterward.
Well, he must not be expecting that she’d smile at someone who almost killed her. She smiled again. At least, she was still alive.
But if he was the car driver that hit her, shouldn’t he be apologizing or begging her to forgive him, perhaps?
But he was acting cold and reserved as if the relief she saw in his eyes when she woke up was not real. First impression, handsome. But as Thera continued to give him side glances, her seventeen-year-old eyes knew that the man was far from being handsome only.
He had an oozing homme fatale qualities; totally dangerous and seductive. The kind of guy that could only be seen in romantic movies and magazines. Very manly. If she was eight or nine years older, there’s not a doubt she’d be one of those who swooned over the man. But she was not the type who would fall for older men, regardless of how good-looking they may be.
If she got it right, he was already in his early thirties. Some men look better as they age, and this man was one of them. He looked wealthy and high educational background.
“Brother...” she called once he was done talking over the phone.
The man stopped, his forehead furrowed. If that was because she called him ‘brother’ or what, she was not sure.
“Can I borrow your phone? My relatives might be worried about me.”
She bit her lip. Would her relatives actually worry? If she knew, they only wished her dead.
The man glanced at the doctor in utter confusion.
THERA put her hand with the borrowed phone down. Joshua’s phone was turned off. Uncle Jaime’s too. Seemed like they did not even bother looking for her. She turned to the doctor who was reading her medical record.
“When are you going to release me, Doc? The man, a while ago, was he the driver who hit me? If he’s not going to pay the whole bill, he’d still help me with hospital expenses, right? You know, my uncle is going to get angry once he finds out I’m indebted.”
“Can’t you really remember anything, dear?”
Thera’s forehead knotted. “I remember everything, Doc. I did not forget. My name is Thera Baguio. Yesterday, I went to school.” She thought for a moment. “I remember taking the jeepney going home after the volleyball tryouts.”
It was the first day of class back at the university, and she joined the volleyball club that afternoon. Maybe after she got down from the jeepney, it was when a car hit her. Well, except for how and why she got hit, everything before the accident was clear to her.
“What do you say is your name again?”
“Thera. Thera Baguio.”
“What do you think is the date now, Thera?”
Her forehead creased. “Second day of the opening of classes. June 6, 2007.”
The doctor shook his head, and her personal nurse stared. Thera wondered.
She had seen this scenario in soap operas before. The doctor had asked her twice about the things she remembered while the nurse checked her BP a while ago.
“I’m going to request an MRI and blood test. I’ll schedule the cognitive test. Nurse Kai will be the one to...”
“Doc, I’m about to expect you’d tell me later on that I have amnesia.”
He cleared his throat. “We will have to run some more tests to make sure.”
Thera coughed.
Before she could ask more questions, the doctor excused himself.
She was left with the nurse who was checking her IV fluid. What were those tests that needed to be done to her? Aside from the pain in some parts of her body, she was all right. Amnesia? That could not be. She remembered her name and their address. Even the maltreatment of her uncle and cousin.
“I can’t stay here for long, Nurse. The hospital fees will grow higher. My uncle will get mad...”
“Mr. De Marco was the major shareholder and president of a well-known mall in Manila. Don’t worry about the expenses. Your husband will take care of it.”
Thera stared at the nurse.
“My... h-husband?”
The nurse nodded and whispered with a laugh. “The handsome man that you called ‘brother’ a while ago, he was your husband.”
Thera’s jaw dropped.
THERA’S gaze was fixated on the fruit basket on the side table, but she had no idea why she was staring at it. She was confused. The nurse told her she should stop overthinking. How could she stop? After revealing that she was already married at seventeen... She shook her head. The thought of being married to someone she didn’t even remember scared her. She could not even remember who she was pursued and kissed.
She saw her face displayed in a magazine when she was accepting an award as one of the most successful businesswomen in the Philippines last 2016. Gorgeous and brainy Thera De Marco received another award, said the caption. Was she that successful? Did she got lucky with her husband and finally give Uncle Jaime and Joshua a better life?
Today was October 19, 2019, different from the date she was expecting. She was no longer seventeen. She was turning thirty in a few months.
The nurse was not lying, and the doctor was right; something was wrong with her. A while ago, the nurse taught her how to browse in Google and watch videos on YouTube using Sean’s Apple iPhone 10 Pro cellphone. The oldest iPhone, which was released in 2007, was all she could remember.
She had no idea if F4 had a follow-up concert in the Philippines after their first successful concert back in December 2003.
Thera was a die-hard fan of Jerry Yan, even though the only show he starred in that she watched was Meteor Garden. Before the Tagalized version of Meteor Garden was aired in the Philippines back in 2003, she and Kisses had already watched the series.
Kisses’ older sister was an OFW in Taiwan. A few months after Meteor Garden was aired in Taiwan in 2001, she returned to the Philippines for vacation. She brought a complete CD series of the show, which she and Kisses marathoned after class.
Sean De Marco. De Marco, Sean... That was the name of the man she married, according to Kai. No matter how she forced her mind, she really could not remember a thing. Her head only hurt.
She married him in haste. She was only twenty years old and dated him for six months only. Why? Did she get pregnant early? No. It was on her record that Sean filled out that she never got pregnant. So why did they rush their marriage?
Thera was curious. How was she able to win a man like Sean? She was sure she’d never been interested in the man even if she was nineteen. She just felt like she was not the type to marry a man she did not love just because of money.
Sean was way out of her league. Where did she meet him? She was at home or at school the whole time. According to Nurse Kai, she was married to him for almost ten years. And that she was fortunate to have married a man like him. She was envied by many.
Thera could see why. Aside from wall-shattering masculinity, Sean was tremendously wealthy. De Marcos owned hotels, textile businesses, universities, as well as the private jets and cruises they owned. Sean came from a wealthy clan, and they have business inside and outside the country. Those are a few pieces of information she got from the nurse about Sean.
Thera glanced at her reflection in the mirror placed on the side table. It was Kai’s. She lent it to her when she insisted that she wanted to see her face now that she’s turning thirty. She was born a few hours before Christ was born. It was the night of December 24th. That was the happiest Christmas of her parents.
She reached for the mirror. For the nth time, she stared at her face. She could not get used to her older face even though she did not look like twenty-nine to Kai. She agreed with the nurse on that matter. She touched her cheek. Her face was stretched. It was smooth and without visible pores. There were no forehead lines and laugh lines. She did not even look like she came from an accident if the few bruises on her face were ignored.
Did she have botox? Did she undergo any cosmetic surgery to stay beautiful? Thera shook her head. She looked natural, though. She put the mirror down. Why was she taking her ‘amnesia’ lightly? What if the doctor tells her she would never gain her memories back? How else would she recover them?
Would she just accept that she was married to Sean? As if she could do anything about it. The evidence was right in front of her; she did not look like a teenager anymore. Speaking of her husband, he had not returned yet since he left without a word a while ago. Of where he went, she did not know. He did not bother telling her. She had never seen that kind of a husband before.
Thera gazed at Sean’s phone on her lap. She shook her head. He left his phone to her. Did he trust her that much? How could he be sure that she would not invade his privacy?
Oh, well, she was not really interested. As Kisses said, a boyfriend who leaves his personal belongings to his girlfriend was not hiding anything or another woman. Her smile was wry. That kind of beauty, even a wall, would dare follow him around. But of course, she was exempted. She liked the type of guys like Dao Ming Si. The man she married looked as stiff and refined as Hua Ze Lei. Boring, in short.
Thera was startled when the phone rang. Her forehead knotted when she saw the name ‘Babe’ as the caller.
She shook her head. There was no other woman, but there was Babe. She clacked her tongue. She flipped the phone over instead of taking the call.
SEAN put the phone down. He leaned on the swivel chair. He was in Sean and Tan’s Tea Caf at the moment. He went there after coming from his villa to shower. He was just done talking to his parents, who were really worried when they heard about Thera’s accident.
Just the other day, he talked to her neurologist. Thera could be suffering from partial amnesia, and his presence and cooperation were needed to determine it.
Dr. Gabriel would be using cognitive and diagnostic tests for Thera. That was except for the MRI, CT scan, blood tests, and other run tests to check if his wife had seizures.
Sean massaged his temple. There was no assurance when Thera could regain her memories, and it was only two months away from the company’s anniversary.
“Brother...”
He was awestruck when she heard Thera’s small and unsure voice when she called him to borrow his phone.
He missed her soft voice, though. He was pulled back to the past decade. He remembered Thera’s smile when their eyes met a while ago. A memory flashed his mind with that quick eye contact.
Ten years ago or so, her gaze used to look like that. Her lips were not only smiling but so were her eyes.
Sean stood up from his seat. He put his hands in his pocket as he sauntered to the glass wall of his former office. He could see the view outside from there. Just across Tea Caf was DM University. Thera used to go there in college before she entered his world...
JUNE 2009Sean and Tan’s Tea Caf, Baguio CitySEAN put down the papers he was reading and picked up the photo that went with the envelope Mr. Jacob Hernandez sent him last week.It was a stolen shot of a young woman standing on an old waiting shed. She was smiling as if she was talking to someone, which the camera did not capture. Her hands were stuck inside the pocket of her black, faded hoodie jacket. She was wearing a uniform underneath it that was also familiar to Sean.He sometimes saw her in front of Tea Caf passing by. Most of the time, she was alone. Sometimes, she was with another student who was the same age as her. With the photo in his hand, Sean stood up from his chair. He faced the glass wall of Sean and Tan’s Tea Caf, the very first business he put up when he finished college.Across the Tea Caf was DM University, which his family-owned. They also had a branch in Man
THERA forced herself not to gape because of what Sean said. Should she protest? Should she insist that he was not her ideal husband? But the man looked stern. She would feel bad if she’d debunk his belief about her first love directly. She was married to this man for almost ten years, yet he looked nothing but a stranger now. She could not remember their wedding anniversary or how they met, or the real reason why they got married early.Love? What else? They probably would not last ten years if they were not in love. But who is Babe? What about the possibility that Sean was having an affair? Did her twenty-nine-year-old self know the woman who called Sean’s phone? They said whoever was involved was the last one to know. Should she pity the older Thera because she had no idea of her husband’s mischief?Thera glanced at the man’s hands on his sides. He sure was wearing
December 5, 2009Baguio City, PhilippinesSean strode inside that music bar in Baguio City. He was on his ride from Manila going home to Baguio when he received a call from Miguel. His mother picked Thera up at the Teacaf.A few days ago, Sean told her that he liked someone and he has a plan of marrying her. He remembered mentioning Thera but he did not expect Charry to drive to Baguio City to personally meet her ASAP.Sean was not prepared by the sudden meeting. And what he worries about the most was that his mother might have told Thera his plan of marrying her when he’s not even courting her yet. Sean had to rush things. He needs to marry Thera by June. He was not used to courting and such, but he was planning to propose to her once he has the chance. The loud music from the performing band greeted Sean as he entered The Hype Bar. His eyes immediately wandered. He coul
“Thera…”Thera gasped. She recognized Sean’s voice. It sounded so clear as if he was very near her. She held on to the edge of the tub tightly for support. She shut her eyes. It felt like her head was spinning around.“You sent all my belongings to the guestroom downstairs. I didn’t tell you I’d sleep there.”The hair on Thera's nape was standing up thinking that Sean's gaze was buried behind her.“Did you even forget now how to use the tub?”Forget seemed to be the magic word. Thera came to her senses and turned to the one who spoke. She almost slipped when she saw her husband standing behind her. If Sean hadn't grabbed her by the hand, she would probably have fallen into the tub."The reaction is delayed for a minute or two, Thera," he said. She was not sure if he was sarcastic or not.Thera slowly freed herself from him and straightened her back. Sean’s touch gave h
Sean saw Thera went out of the villa as he stood at the veranda that connects the master suite and the guestroom where he was staying. His gaze followed her as she walked towards the porch going to the poolside. She sat on a rattan lounge chair and leaned her back against its backrest. She looked up. The night sky was full of stars. It was past ten in the evening. Maybe just like him, she found it hard to sleep too.Sean doubted that Thera has amnesia when she asked him about his mother. But what happened hours ago made him think otherwise. He saw the guilt, disbelief, and pain in her eyes. Those emotions were real and genuine. Thera could not believe she could hurt someone just like what she did in the video. He let out a deep breath when he saw Thera hugging herself. When she rubbed her arms using the palm of her hands, Sean wanted to jump out of the veranda to hug the woman and make her feel his warmth. Sean
Mara clenched her teeth. She glanced at the pay to cash check before focusing her angry gaze on him. “I did the same thing to your male cashier two weeks ago. You were there. I demanded to talk to you, but you just walked past me. What makes this particular employee of yours special that you’re willing to pay me in exchange for my apology?”Sean pressed his lips. He did not want to answer that question."I'm not going to apologize, Sean. Not in this lifetime. ” He grabbed the check, then marched out of the office.“You have a unique way of breaking someone’s heart, Sean,” Miguel said, shaking his head and then went out of his office.Sean grabbed his bag from the desk and followed Miguel out.His eyes automatically searched for Thera but she was no longer at the counter, she was not even serving the customers. She must be crying her heart out in the restroom. Sean knew Mara intentionally humiliated T
Baguio City, PhilippinesTHERA woke up at seven the next morning. Her back was sore from lying on the couch all night but surprisingly she had a great sleep. She flexed her muscles and stretched her body as she got up. The sun was already sneaking from the glass window of the room. She forgot to lower the blinds down before going to sleep last night. She yawned as she walked into the spacious bathroom. She turned the shower on when she got inside the multi-water jet shower enclosure. Thera retreated in shock as the cold water flowed out and splashed her feet. After a few minutes of staring at the flowing water from the shower, she closed it and went out. She could not muster enough courage to bathe under the open showerhead.Thera tied her hair and went down to check and help Fely prepare breakfast.Would Sean join her for breakfast? If yes, though feeling awkward, she cou
THERA’S tears had gone dry when they returned to the villa. She was still in disbelief. Uncle Jaime is dead, and Sean hid it from her.The old man died of cardiac arrest, according to Rowela. She did know if she should get mad at Sean or not. She chose the latter. Maybe Sean was thinking of her situation. He did not want to shock her despite showing a viral video of last night.Thera wanted to hit her head on the wall. Maybe she’d regain her memories by doing that. Her uncle died, and Joshua remained poor while she got to be in a good place and enjoying a luxurious life.Thera stared at the eco bag Rowela gave her. One by one, she took out the things inside. Most of them were her academic notebooks. The cheap stuffed animals were from the night market she went to alone.Thera sat straight when she saw a bind, thin notebook. It was her diary. She brushed it when she noticed a few pages torn by termites. Her smile was bittersweet when she began
Epilogue Thera slid her hands into the pocket of her maxi dress that barely protected her skin from the cold. She got too excited to see the sunrise that she forgot to bring her scarf. She stood in the gazebo, the one that was facing across the ridges of Baguio where the sun usually emanated the very first thing in the morning. The temperature went down to ten degrees last night— enough to make their teeth chatter. Today was the twenty-fourth of December 2023. The De Marcos would gather tonight to celebrate not only Christmas but also her birthday. Their maids and cooks were all busy preparing for the party later tonight. She’d might as well help later since she had nothing to do in particular anyway. It was three years ago when she left to find solitude and to recollect her broken soul. Now, she finally came back after regaining herself fully. Sean still managed The Palace Mall and Hotel pretty well over the years. On the other hand, Miguel was still managing the Tea Caf with the
November 16, 2009Baguio City, Philippines“Sir, can we just turn the lights off?”The silence prevailed for a short moment among the two of them. Thera bit her lower lip realizing that what she just said could literally have two separate meanings. She wanted to hit her head for her foolishness. Thera saw how the corner of his lips smirked in a most mischievous way. It was a first, and she couldn't help but swoon over it. It was a wonderful sight to see.“W-what I'm trying to say is—”“Get change. You’re dripping wet,” he told her before he walked into the office.Thera clutched her chest, her heart was beating too fast. Sean would be the death of her. Whenever he's near, she felt like she had to hold her breath for a short while just so she could con
October 15, 2019The Palace Mall and HotelThe employees paved the way for Thera as soon as she began picking up her pace towards the exit door. She just finished debating with a few board members in the conference room a little while ago. Two of the employees of The Palace were gathering outside the mall, threatening to file a complaint to the labor union. To add more tension, they were holding a banner in hand, which clearly showed strong protest. They were Lira and Rose from the marketing department. Just a week ago, Thera caught the two gossiping about her inside the restroom with a newbie. But their protest failed to move her. It was evident in her eyes that the amount of care she possessed as she watched them is equal to the amount of common sense they have. She could not believe them right now. After bad-mouthing her, she was considerate enough to let the
One year later...Sean closed the book and put it aside after spending half an hour reading it. He could not understand a word about it. He turned to the side and leaned against the window of the plane. He watched the thick white clouds scattered around the air as the plane flew past them. The duration of the flight from Incheon to NAIA lasted three hours. He had been traveling for months both for business and personal reasons.Besides traveling in Korea, he had also gone to Japan, Singapore, China, and Taiwan. The neighboring countries were considered the top source for tourists, so he went there firsthand in the last few months. He just finished his business trip to Korea. He stayed three days in Seoul, two nights in Mt. Seorak, and spent two days and nights in Jeju Island. Just like his prior business deal in different countries, convincing Korea’s top travel companies to tie up wit
Just when the elevator door was just inches from closing, Sean held it with his hand to keep it open. Thera raised a face. She wished she could blink her tears away, but how could she do so? Sean's serious gaze rooted her to the spot.“Nine years ago, I told myself if I could travel back in time, I’d choose not to meet you. Afraid I might ruin the girl who got nothing but love in her heart. I told myself to keep my distance from you. That I shouldn't have met you. But when you lost your memories, just thinking about you forgetting everything about me scared the hell out of me, Thera. No matter how hard I try to deny it, you are the last person I want to lose.”Thera swallowed hard. Hearing those felt like someone hit her hard on the chest. Sean's voice sounded so broken and sincere to her ears.“I know I cannot put back in your eyes all the tears you cried for me. I know that a single sorry can't
Thera had been awake for the last few minutes but decided to lay down on the bed for a little bit. Her head was throbbing for crying overnight. When her digital clock reached six twenty-six, she finally got up from bed, avoided looking at the other side of the bed.She dragged herself towards the pantry and started to look for something to prepare for herself. After several moments of opening and closing the fridge, she still couldn't find the right thing to cook. The refrigerator was surprisingly filled with anything essential for cooking, but she had no idea what to prepare.Thera took her blazer and handbag after getting dressed. She decided to contact Laida and asked her out. After putting sunglasses on, she hurried towards the door.By the time she yanked the door open, Sean's figure had appeared in front of her. He was squatting on the floor, half-asleep. His other thigh was folded. His white
Sean was facing the electronic door lock for quite a while now, struggling to figure out Thera's passcode unit. He had inputted Thera's birthday, her parents' birthday, their wedding day, but to no avail. On top of that, Thera was clinging to his neck, her face pressed against his shoulders. She was absolutely intoxicated.“Hey…” he muttered as she slipped out of his arms. He watched her squat on the floor like a child, her back leaned against the wall. Her eyes still shut.Sean knelt to scoop her up. Thera let out a groan of protest, leaning her head against his chest this time. He swore the hair all over his chest stood when her breath brushed through his neck.He was about to press the digital lock when Thera spoke out of a sudden.“Ten, fifteen, fifteen, idiot.”As soon as they got in, Sean carefully laid her down. He tucked her in bed. He remai
October 14, 2015The Palace HotelMr Jacob Hernandez's eyes were fixed at Thera for a couple of moments. She was sitting on a couch while the old man remained seated on his swivel chair, his elbows rested across the long working table. How is she going to start asking her questions? What if everything she heard was just a rumor? Why would he even waste his time and money for her in the first place? But the way Mr. Hernandez was looking at her, he sure had a lot of things to say."Perhaps, it's time to know about the truth, miss Thera."Her heart was pounding like crazy. She had watched this kind of scene in a movie many times over. Will she be able to cope with whatever he's about to say?"Before you met Sean, I had sen
August 11, 2015Pangasinan, PhilippinesThera pulled to a stop and parked her car on the side of the road. The man he met in Baguio asked her to drop him off at a restaurant."Thank you, Thera. I owe you one,"She smiled a bit. The man was about to say something, but he chose to shut his mouth. It seemed like the woman was still not in the mood for a chat. He felt the need to get out of the car. Clutching the door handle preventively, he turned to face her once more."Do you want some coffee? I supposed we both hadn't had breakfast yet,"Thera shook her head to refuse his offer. "I'm full. Thank you,"The man shut the door, defeated. He was left behind while watching her drive off her car. A sigh escaped from his mouth. Thera had the prettiest ye
