Chapter 43: Welcome to the world
Several weeks went by. I loved having Katie as my wife. As the birth of our daughter grew closer, I became more reluctant to leave Katie's side.
One day while helping Edmond repair a broken fence. My mind was preoccupied and I accidentally used too much force hammering the wood panel. It broke into several pieces. Edmond made his way over to me and picked up the broken pieces scattered on the ground. “What troubles you? You haven't been acting like yourself lately?”
I scanned the area and conjured up a new wood panel before meeting his gaze. “It’s just… I’m worried about Katie and our baby. I keep feeling like something bad is going to happen and that I will lose them.”

Two days later, the ceremony for Katie's passing was underway. Because it had to be held in the temple, I wasn't sure if I would be allowed to attend. I had begged Katie’s parents to make an exception, to allow me to say a proper goodbye. They reluctantly agreed to discuss this with the elders. My consciousness slammed back into my body. It took some time for me to realise that I was back with Cassie by my side. "I had a baby." I whispered quietly, mostly to myself. "A beautiful baby girl." Cassie turned to look at me. "It was you, it was always you, in my dreams. I wasn't sure, but it was actually you. It actually happened." What was she talking about? Then a light went off in my head. Cassie is Katie. Somehow she must have experienced the memories of us too. I gave her a hug. "I found you." I wasn't sure whether I was referring to the fact that I had finally located Cassie or that I had finally found the missing part of my soul, either way I was happy. Holding on to Cassie, I looked around the area, trying to figure out where we were. Everything was dark.

Cassie and I spent some time just being close to each other after the others had left. Having her remembering her past life helped, and she forgave me for not telling her I was a demon. After living through Katie's life, she understood why I had been so reluctant in telling her. She also realised that I'm not a typical demon, like the ones she read about, and that I would do anything for her. I was happy to have Cassie back, but I didn't want to push it. Cassie wasn't Katie, even though she technically was. I made the guest room into Cassie's room so that she didn't need to feel like I was pressuring her. I teleported us back to the house, but when we got there, the house was empty. Adrenalin rushed into my body and I jumped when Leah placed her hands on my shoulders. She gazed into my eyes. “Calm down. The wolves wouldn’t have wanted to come inside.” I closed my eyes and nodded my head. She was right. I followed Leah out to the back garden. There were still no signs of Cassie or the wolves. A repetitive banging rang in my ears and I rushed towards it. Leah followed behind. It led us into the forest and to the edge of the estate. Several people were there, which I assumed to be wolves. Most of them were wearing nothing more than a pair of trousers, despite the chilly weather. When we got closer, they turned and stared at us. I could hear continuous growls coming from several of them, which stopped me in my tracks.

I enjoyed my flight, knowing that Cassie was safe in my house with Leah protecting her. It made me feel less worried, especially after the defensive display of magic that Leah had manifested by instinct when we were sparring. I knew she still felt bad about it, but in all honesty, it was nothing. If I had been prepared for it, I would have been able to deflect it. My fighting skills went way beyond some elemental magic.
