Ally’s heart starts thumping in her chest. Meg cannot take that dish to a world-renowned chef’s house! Ally was sworn to secrecy.
Ally turns to Ralph with a worried look on her face.
“When was Meg here?” Ally asks urgently.
“She left minutes before you arrived.” Ralph answers in a confused tone.
Ally turns her back on Ralph. She takes her phone out of her pocket and dials Meg’s number. The phone rings twice before Meg answers.
“Hey! Thank you so much for this beautiful dish. You outdid yourself, once again.” Meg rambles without pause.
“Meg, …” Ally tries to tell her that she took the wrong dish, but Meg interrupts her.
“I have just arrived here. Thank you, again. I will let you know how it went.” Meg tells Ally before hanging up.
Ally stares out in front of her, not really seeing anything. This is really bad. What if the Chef asks for the recipe? Ally feels sick to her stomach. She dials Meg’s number again but the call is ended after a few rings.
Ralph clears his throat behind Ally. Ally turns around to look at Ralph, she is slowly returning back to reality. She takes a deep breath and lets it out slowly. Today is going to be busy, especially with one less person in the kitchen. She needs to focus.
*******
Meg is welcomed into the home by the butler. He takes her coat and the dish from her and leads her to a large dining room. There are placements at the table for six people. A lot more people can be seated at this large table.
At one of the seats. Eric is sitting, waiting for the rest of the guests to arrive. Meg does not recognise Eric from the night she picked Ally up after her horrible date. She remembers Eric from the charity event she attended with a friend. She could not take her eyes off Eric for the whole night. She tried very hard to get close to him but he was just not interested. She ended up talking to Eric’s mother.
His mother is a very kind lady. She has made a great name for herself in the culinary world and has built an empire that now belongs to Eric. While they were talking, she told Meg that it is time to choose a wife for Eric. She wanted him to fall in love and choose his own bride despite it being their family tradition that the mother usually chooses the bride. Eric is in his forties now; it is time he marries.
This grabbed Meg’s attention more than anything. She immediately turned on all her charm to impress this elderly lady. She had to tell a few lies. Meg did not think that the lies were all that bad either. She only amplified her accomplishments a little. She told her that she is the head chef where she works. It is not a complete lie. She often helps out when Ally is not there. She knows what needs to be done. She can do the job if it is expected of her.
Her lies seemed to impress Eunice and while she saw that it was working, she just went along with it. She was very excited when she got invited to this lunch with Eunice and her son. She knew it was the way to get accepted into this family. Although she basically told everything as if she was Ally, she felt that there were enough resemblances in both their lives that it could very well be the truth.
Eunice comes into the dining room and welcomes Meg warmly. She leads her to the chair next to Eric. Meg takes her seat gracefully and greets Eric politely. Eric closes his eyes and presses his lips together. He seems very irritated. Meg is a little take aback by his behaviour and gives Eunice a worried look. Eunice smiles and takes a seat opposite them.
It is very late when Meg bids her goodbyes and leaves the beautiful mansion. She takes a ride back to their apartment. She cannot wait to tell Ally everything that happened.
********
It is almost midnight when Ally walks into the apartment. She sees Meg and heaves a heavy sigh of relief.
“You took the wrong dish.” She tells Meg promptly.
“Wait before you get into it. I made dinner. I want to tell you all about the day I had.” Meg waves her over to the kitchen island where they usually have their meals.
Meg tells Ally how beautiful the mansion is where the lunch was held. She then told her about the awkward son and how he barely greeted her. They enjoyed lunch immensely. The company was wonderful and the food was delicious.
“When the butler brought out the dish I prepared, you should have seen the look on her face!” Meg exclaims.
“You mean the dish that I prepared” Ally interrupts in a dry tone.
“Yes, yes,” Meg waves her off. “That woman could not believe her eyes. She was really shocked and very, very impressed.” Meg continues as if she didn’t even notice how unhappy Ally was about this whole ordeal.
“She asked me a few questions about where I grew up and how I got into the culinary world. At some point she asked me if I go by any other names. It was an odd question.” Meg takes a sip of her wine and then continues. “I told her my second name is Alicia. She smiled and excused herself from the table.” Meg takes another sip of her wine.
“All this time you have not spoken once to the man sitting next to you?” Ally prods.
“No,” Meg continues. “He was very rude from the first moment I got there. He was very irritated by his mother and kept telling her that he cannot enter into any sort of agreements right now. She just kept telling him that it is nonsense and that he needs someone to look after him. Especially now.”
“Why especially now?” Ally asks again.
“Oh, he was on a business trip for his father when something went wrong. He got injured and now he is completely blind.” Meg rambles on.
“That is unfortunate” Ally says unenthusiastically.
“Yeah, so now his mother is searching for a wife for him. Apparently in their family the mother chooses the bride. There has also never been a divorce in the family so it is a quite serious tradition and it seems to work for them.” Meg tells her.
“Just because they do not divorce, does not mean they are happy.” Ally tells Meg honestly.
Meg seems to be getting a little irritated now. She puts her plate away and clears the counter.
“I just don’t need your negativity right now Ally. Can you not be happy for me? I can finally get out of this whole orphan charity life I have been living.” Meg is thoroughly irritated now.
“Orphan charity life?” Ally asks shocked.
“Yes. I know full well that I would not even have a job right now if you did not pull strings. I grew up next to you in the orphanage and I could see how people preferred you over me. You received more opportunities than I did. You could cook before we finished school. Then you left! And you left me there alone!” Meg’s voice increases in volume with every sentence.
“Meg. I am a year older than you are. I left because I finished school. I got a bursary for Chef School and I took it.” As soon as Ally finished that sentence, she knew why Meg was feeling the way she did. Meg did not receive any bursaries when she finished school. She could not go study anything. Ally took her under her wing when she started working and she got her a job at the restaurant where she worked. Meg had to start very low in the ranks and work her way up. She did not even work her way up very far. Ally gave her enough opportunities but Meg just didn’t have enough ambition to follow through. Ally had to be fair with promotions. She could not favour Meg and Meg seems to think that she should have.
“Well, it doesn’t matter anymore. I finally got the opportunity of a life time.” Meg is suddenly indifferent. “You do not have to tolerate me at work anymore and you do not have to make sure I have a roof over my head anymore. I will not be your problem any longer.” Meg says as she finishes clearing the counter and putting things away.
“What do you mean by that Meg?” Ally is very confused. “I love having you here and at work.” Ally tries to soothe Meg.
“Yes, that is the problem. I am there because you have me there. I am not there because I belong there.” Meg wipes her hands on a towel. “I am getting married in two weeks. I will be moving into the mansion tomorrow to start with the necessary arrangements and I will also not be able to work for you any longer.”
Meg tosses the towel onto the counter and walks out of the room angrily.
Ally is shocked when she wakes up the next morning to find that Meg is gone. She didn’t take all of her things either. She just left with the most important things. She left things like old clothes and her work wear. Ally takes out her phone to message Meg.MEGPLEASE LET ME KNOW WHERE YOU ARE. I WOULD LIKE TO COME VISIT YOU SOMETIME.ALLYAlly stares at her phone for a moment. Usually, Meg would reply within seconds. Ally’s heart sinks when she realises that Meg is not going to reply at all. She puts her phone away and gets ready for work. She will need to replace Meg soon. The day is busy. It helps to keep Ally’s mind off everything that happened in the last few weeks. She keeps her focus on the restaurant and makes sure she is exhausted when she leaves for home. At home she takes a quick shower and falls asleep almost immediately. She does this every night and it seems to work well for the first week.Late one night when she opened her door, she found an envelope on the floor. She
“Sure,” Ally answers nervously, “What can I do for you?”“I cannot be on the phone for too long.” Meg sounds stressed and afraid. “Something about the dish you prepared triggered some secret in this family. I cannot figure out what exactly is going on but they want answers that I cannot give them. Tell me what is so special about this dish.”There is a sense of urgency in Meg’s voice that makes Ally uncomfortable. Maybe it is the mention of the dish that makes her uncomfortable. She knew it was not good when the dish left the kitchen.“Meg. I told you that dish was not meant for you. It is a top-secret recipe. I promised never to write it down or to share it with anyone. It takes days to prepare and it took me almost six years to perfect it. It is a very intricate dish. Please tell me what is going on?” Ally tells Meg quickly.“I do not know what is going on. I have gathered that this dish is somehow connected to Eunice and it is the main reason why she picked me to be Eric’s bride. F
Ally covers her mouth with both hands. This cannot be. She just spoke to Meg yesterday. Meg was worried about Eunice making her prepare the dish she did not know how to prepare. She suddenly remembers how Ralph looked when she left work. She quickly dialled Ralph’s number.“Hey Ally.” Ralph answers. He seems in a better mood but his usual sunshine personality is not coming through.“Hey Ralph, remember you told me about the Symons family misfortunes. What was the last one you heard of?” Ally decides to get right into it.“Mrs Eunice Symons died after falling down a flight of stairs.” Ralph answers sadly.“Do you know when this happened?” Ally prods“This morning. Or maybe last night. They found her this morning at the bottom of the stairs. Some say it was an accident and other think that she was pushed.” Ralph says softly, as if he does not want any bystanders to hear.“Ralph, where did you get this information?” Ally asks in an equal soft tone, although she has no bystanders that wou
Ally rush towards the Bridal room. There are two guards outside the room. Both of them are shamelessly armed. Ally slows her pace as she nears the door. Both of the guards watch her intently. She comes to stand still in front of the bridal room door.“I am here to help the bride get dressed.” Ally tells the one guard. His eyes are cold and he gives her a piercing stare. The one corner of his mouth lifts slightly into somewhat of a sneer. He turns slightly and opens the door for Ally to go in.Ally enters the room, not taking her eyes off the security guard. When she is inside, he smirks fully and pulls the door closed. The whole encounter leaves Ally restless. She turns around to find Meg sitting in a chair. She has a night slip on.“Hey, Meg.” Ally greats softly. She walks to Meg and sits next to her. “How do we get you out of here?”“I think…” Meg starts but then pauses to look at the door. “I think I could ask them if I can go get something and then we can take off.” Meg seems nerv
Ally suddenly realises that her plan has just blown up in her face. She will not be able to tell Eric anything. Surely the other people in the church will realise that she does not look like Meg?Ally remembers her conversation with Ralph. He said Meg use to stay in her room. She only had one lady that was allowed to enter her room.“Nobody is going to know I am not Meg.” Ally mutter under her breath. She only realises that she said it out loud when she hears a soft chuckle next to her.“That is right Princess. This family’s secrecy will be their undoing.” The guard says before chuckling again. “Very well. Time for you to become Mrs Eric Symons.”The wedding march starts to play and all the guests stand up and turn towards the door at the back of the chapel. Patiently waiting for the bride to glide her way down the aisle. Ally stares out in front of her as she takes the first few steps into the chapel. She racks her mind for a plan to get out of this before she reaches the front where
Ally forces herself to remain calm and collected throughout dinner. When Eric finished eating, he excuses himself and leaves the room. If Ally did not know he was blind she would not have guessed it. Ally looks at Eric’s father. He stares at her with his cold disapproving eyes. Ally feels uncomfortable and excuses herself. As she pushes her chair out to get up a smile spreads slowly on the old mans face.“They usually die,” he says, rubbing a finger over his lips, “one disappeared, the rest died.”Ally looks at him with a shocked expression. His smile broadens. Is Meg the one that disappeared? Eunice died. Were there more women that did not make it out of this family safely? He sure as hell made it sound as if there were more deaths than disappearances. The whole thought leaves Ally anxious. She needs someone who she can talk to, but she thinks the only person who she would have been able to talk to, may have been Eunice.Ally quickly leaves the room and head to the room where she was
“Mrs Symons feels that she must leave this lovely home to attend to her day job.” Agatha announces to Eric. The way she says ‘day job’ is filled with disapproval in her voice.Ally stares at Agatha for a second. She turns her gaze to Eric.“No” Eric announces and turns to head back into his study. Ally quickly follows him into his study.“I have a job to do. I need to get back to the restaurant.” Ally tells Eric as he moves towards his desk.“You do not have a job anymore. It has been taken care of. You now belong to this family and therefor everything you do will be for the benefit of this family. You cannot leave the house. There are reporters everywhere.” Eric’s tone is void of emotion. He simply takes his seat behind his desk and looks out in front of him. If Ally didn’t know any better, she would be sure that he can see what is in front of him. She moves slightly to her left but his eyes do not follow.Ally looks over her shoulder to see how Agatha closes the doors to the study.
Ally wakes the next morning with less anxiety. She gets up and gets ready to do the rest of the dinner planning. She didn’t think she would enjoy it this much. When she gets to her office, she finds a package on her table. It is the invitations she sent yesterday to get printed. Ally is impressed with the printer’s turnaround time. She didn’t expect it to be with her so soon. She puts the invitations in envelopes as Eunice described at the bottom of the guest list. She seals each envelope with a wax bead after writing the name of the guest on the front of the envelope.Ally then attends to the menu and heads to the kitchen to discuss the menu with the staff. The head chef in the kitchen is one of the friendliest people Ally has ever met. It was wonderful talking to him.Dirk checked the menu Ally gave him and asked questions about how the meals should be prepared and plated. Ally is so grateful for her experience as head chef at the restaurant. She is not sure that she would have been
