“Thank you for making it on time. Ready for the first day of real work? Follow me this way, I’ll drop you girls off at your managers’ office one by one. First, let us drop Nicole off first since her manager’s office is the closest to here,” the woman from yesterday said. Everyone was clearly excited and perhaps a little anxious about meeting their new bosses for the first time. The codename and the mystery surrounding the identity of the managers only added to the tension. As luck or the locations of the managers’ office were to have it, I ended up being the last girl left after we had sent off the other three girls.“Only you left now. Are you excited, Natalia?” the woman asked with a pleasant smile. “A little…” I replied. “Sorry that you had to be the last one, but your manager’s office is furthest away. This way please,” the woman said before leading the way. She was right, the office we were heading to was a slightly long walk away after an elevator ride that transcended many
As these thoughts ran through my head, his piercing blue eyes continued to stare at me from where he was seated behind the table. “Maybe this is some kind of mistake…” I mumbled. “I wish that it was too because as far as I’m concerned, you should be heading back home. Isn’t that right, Natalia?” Reiner said with a displeased smirk. I narrowed my eyes at him to show my own displeasure. Who would have thought that I would end up with Reiner as my boss of all people?! There were just too many issues related to this problem that I didn’t know where to start. Firstly, he used to be my butler. Secondly, because he used to be my butler, I knew that there was nothing that I could do that he couldn’t. He probably did everything better than I could ever do them. Last but definitely not least, he didn’t want me here. At all. “I know that you don’t want me here so…maybe you can request for the secretarial department to swap me with another secretary…” I suggested in a small voice. Reiner si
When I lifted my head up from the table my headache had subsided and although nothing had changed about the situation, I felt better. That probably meant that I was now more mentally ready to accept it all. I sighed and leaned back on the chair. This chair felt comfortable; this wasn’t bad. I scrunched up my face when I realized that Queen must have known something about this all along. I mean, there’s no way that she wouldn’t know Reiner’s code name. He’s her only son! I wondered if she planned all this and hoped that she didn’t. I prayed that this was all just a weird twist of fate or an unfortunate coincidence; however, deep down I knew that that probably wasn’t the case. This whole thing was orchestrated by the Queen…I’m going to have a talk with her when I get back to mansion. It wasn’t like I could call her out on it and blame her directly. I’ve already declared that I will do well in this job right in front of Reiner too, so I couldn’t ask her to pull some strings to have my
“Well, honestly, I thought you wouldn’t turn up to work if I told you that your new boss is Reiner. I don’t know what happened between you two, but I could tell that you were avoiding him like the plague,” Queen said followed by a depressed sigh. She stuffed more cake into her mouth, and it looked like she was stress-eating. I followed her example and stuffed a large chunk of cake into my mouth and began chewing on it. “Maybe you’re right. It’s ok though, I’ve decided to continue working even if he’s my boss. I’ll make sure to do my job well,” I stated firmly.“It’s good to see that you’re so motivated and determined. I’m quite relieved. I was scared that you’ll just up and leave the island for good,” Queen said before smiling at me. I watched Queen stab the cake with her fork while I wondered if she had anything to do with the manager and secretary pairing. There was a sure way to find out. “Please tell me that you didn’t have anything to do with me being coincidentally paired up
Since I knew that sitting here wasn’t going to give me any answers, I decided to ask the man himself. I knocked on his door until he told me to ‘come in’. Reiner was sitting behind his desk when I entered his office. “Umm…is there anything that I can help you out with today?” I asked as I stood in front of his desk. “No,” Reiner replied without looking up from the document that he was reading. He seemed busy enough. Was there really nothing that I could help him out with? “How about some coffee…or tea?” I offered hesitantly. Or me?Ok, that’s an old joke that’s not funny in this situation. It wasn’t like I could play that joke on Reiner. I sighed at how useless I apparently was. “Coffee…” he said without looking my way. “Ok. Please wait a moment,” I replied enthusiastically. The first task that my new boss gave to me was to make coffee. It wasn’t the most challenging job in the world, but I was glad to have something to do. I hoped that he would give me some real work after th
After a few knocks on the door of Reiner’s office, I finally got a reply that I could go in to the see him. Just as I had suspected, Reiner was still working and have not left the office for lunch. I walked in to see him still busy going through some documents on his desk. “Umm…R, I mean, Knight…are you going to take a lunch break?” I asked. “No, I’ll eat later…” Reiner replied without looking at me. He used to tell me that skipping meals and not eating on time was bad but now he’s doing all of those things. I sighed softly while I thought about how to get him to eat lunch. I couldn’t help but wonder if he had the same thoughts while he was working for me as my butler. He took care of me so well…I guess I should try harder too. “Do you want something? I can go buy it for you…” I offered before smiling at him. Buying lunch for him should be a safe enough option because I didn’t cook it so he couldn’t complain much about the quality of the food. It wasn’t like I could cook anyways
In the end, I decided not to say what was on my mind. It wasn’t because I was afraid to hear his response, but it was because I already knew what he would say, and I just didn’t want him to tell me to go home again. “I’m very sorry. Please enjoy your meal…” I said politely as I kept my eyes down and my head hung low. I turned and left the room before he could say anything. There was nothing for me to do in the afternoon, so I killed some more time helping out with random tasks at the secretarial office. Maybe if things continue this way, I’ll just become a general clerk without a manager as my boss which wasn’t at all too bad. By the time that the workday was over, I was too depressed to stay another minute in the office building. Thankfully, I had work at the bar tonight. Talking to Kat and just working would probably make me feel better. After grabbing my stuff, I was on my way to the bar. Just getting in the car eased my stress considerably. There was nothing wrong with the job
I sat down with Charles at his table while we waited for our orders to arrive. Charles seemed to be in a decently good mood while the same couldn’t be said about me. The whole issue with Reiner at work was stressing me out quite badly. It was fortunate that I had this job at the bar to run to for comfort so that I felt like my life was still useful. When I first got a job here, it was mainly to earn some money so that I could support myself and work towards moving out of the mansion. However, this job at the bar along with the people here made me feel like I had a place to belong. “What are you thinking about? You don’t seem so cheerful today,” Charles asked as he stared at me from across the table. If he’s saying that then I guess my efforts in trying to act normal wasn’t really paying off. It was like he could tell right away that I had something troubling on my mind and he was right. “I’m finding my new job a little tough actually…” I confessed a little shyly. It’s only been a
