I lay in Xander’s bed, basking in the pool of sun that shone directly over me. The room was filled with warmth and light as the sun’s rays poured in through the half-closed curtains, illuminating the space with a soft glow. I felt enchanted by the sight of the stained glass windows that adorned the upper part of the room. It was beautiful to see those dancing tints vanishing and reappearing from the movements of clouds in the sky.
As I lay there, I thought about Xander. He had left early, probably not wanting to disturb my sleep, but I couldn’t help but wonder if he had left because he regretted spending the night with me. The thought made me groan in disappointment.
Faiths, I hoped it wasn’t out of regret…
I hid my warm, red face in the pillow beside me to stifle my cry of embarrassment.
I bit my bottom lip, thinking back to the steamy night I had shared with him and flushed a deeper crimson at the memories of his touch on my skin.
The bedroom door opened, and it startled me to see Xander walk in, his gaze finding me immediately.
I flashed him a stunned smile and bunched the covers to hide my nakedness.
He removed the vest of his black two-piece suit and sauntered to my side.
His hand slid up the length of my body and tossed aside my wavy hair that hid his mark. Xander kissed it, and it sent shivering ripples through my entire body.
Wow, this is new, I thought.
I hadn’t thought to look at the mark yet. Turning my head slantwise, I noticed the two half-crescent moons of Xander’s bite sitting on my left shoulder. They almost linked to make a complete circle. When I ran my fingers across it, I was a little dumbfounded to feel it had already healed to a faded scar. Even the gashes on my arms had become pink.
I frowned, and Xander kissed my nose.
“Yeah, I forgot to mention that you’d inherit some of my abilities through the mark,” he said it like it was the most natural thing in the world. “It’s one thing that makes the mate bond special.”
“Oh?”
“You healed overnight because of my fast-healing ability.” He traced the outline of his mark with a light finger.
“Hmm, what else might I expect?” I asked while I did a long stretch over him. He had settled his back on the headboard and left one leg dangling to the side of the bed.
“You will feel some emotions through me, and I, you. The mate bond is a little mysterious.” Xander kissed the top of my head.
I would have to read up on it, then.
“What would you like to do today?” He raised a brow at me. “I freed up the rest of my day. We can do whatever you like.”
“How are you able to free yourself? I hardly ever saw you while cleaning your quarters these last few weeks. You were like a ghost. I had half a mind of thinking you were a workaholic,” I teased him, propping up my elbow on his lap.
Xander shifted a bit awkwardly on the bed and cleared his throat. “Well… I was sort of avoiding you,” he said sheepishly. “When Leo told me you had felt ill and refused to leave your room, I guessed it was because of me, so I tried not to be in the area too much—to make you more comfortable.” He sighed deeply. “To be honest, it was very selfish of me to put you through all of this. You were all I ever thought about, and it drove me crazy that you were on the other side of that door, but I couldn’t be with you.”
I understood the feeling. I also felt the pull Xander had on me. The feeling lessened since he marked me, but the feeling was different now. The want and need for him still lingered, but now that there was a connection through his mark, it wasn’t as intense as before. It felt like I always had a hand on him, reassuring me he was there.
I lifted myself from the bed, moved closer to Xander, and pressed my lips to his softly before moving off and wrapping his bedsheets around my body.
“Is that a yes to spending the day with me?” Xander asked, placing both feet on the side of the bed and following me with his beautiful grey eyes.
I was surprised I didn’t see his Lycan surface yet.
“Sure.” I smiled at him. “But I’ll have to borrow some clothes.” I moved toward his closet and dresser. “Unless you want me to keep wearing the maid’s dress?” I frowned as I became a little confused. “Do I still need to work for you?”
He laughed wholeheartedly at the situation. Weirdly, a calming effect dissolved the panicking feeling creeping up inside my stomach, and I felt Xander’s mark tingle.
“I have some clothes you can wear that are too small for me, but I’ll order some dresses for you. And don’t worry, you no longer have to work for me. In fact, you’re fired.” Xander grinned and jumped off the bed.
He moved over to his dresser and looked through some clothes.
“I’m working on something so that we can be together officially in the eyes of society. We’ll need to sit down so you can give me all your personal information. I’ll need to make papers for you that say―”
I didn’t hear the end of his sentence. A buzzing noise rushed into my ears, blocking any sound. I shivered, and cold sweat appeared on my neck, making my hair stick to my nape and bare back.
I would have to give him my personal information, and he’d probably ask out of politeness to have information about my family—to know me better.
I wasn’t ready to do this. I thought I was, but I realized that I wasn’t prepared to reveal myself to Xander.
Tears burned in the back of my throat. I wasn’t ready to lose him just yet!
Strong arms wrapped around me, surrounding me warmly.
“Whatever you’re thinking, stop it.” Xander pulled away some of my hair and trailed kisses from my shoulder to my jaw. “I know you’re feeling guilt and fear about something, and I want you to know that if you’re not ready to open up to me about certain things from your past, that’s completely fine. You can just give me whatever information you are comfortable sharing.”
I sensed another blast of calmness trickling through me from the mark, and I understood Xander was doing this. He was trying to calm me through our connection. And he knew every stupid feeling I had because he could sense them too.
Oh, how I hated that mate bond thing.
He let go of me, rummaged through his things, and returned with a black pair of pants and a soft green cotton shirt.
He pulled the shirt beside my face and nodded. “Yup, this will go very well with your red hair and hazel eyes.”
My heartbeat picked up at the mention of my hair. My red Cardinal hair. I reined in all the emotions that were about to surface. I didn’t want Xander to feel them.
I took the clothes from his hands and dropped the bedsheet to my feet. I could feel him ogling me while I walked over to the door leading to my room to get some undergarments. Maybe that would distract him from the marching drum playing in my chest.
Once I came back into his room, I dressed.
I rather liked Xander’s clothes on me. It reminded me of my lessons with Otis when I dressed in men’s clothes when we practiced magic. I still had to roll up the bottom cuffs of the pants and put a belt in place to secure everything. The shirt was too big for me, but I didn’t mind. Xander was right; it did bring out my eyes and hair.
I turned on myself to show him, and he smiled lightly. However, his thoughts looked like they were somewhere else.
He came up behind me once more and circled his arms near my chest.
“Why did you colour your hair?” he cautiously asked, nuzzling his face in the crook of my neck.
So, he picked that up. Drat.
I groaned and placed my hands on his forearms affectionately. “Because my previous employers would hit me for having red hair. I hid it under anything that could conceal it entirely or coloured it to avoid getting punished again.”
I heard him growl, and then his grip on me tightened, almost possessively. We stayed like this for a few minutes; after that, he let me go so I could finish getting ready.
I pulled my hair up in a knot and picked up the shawl I had brought over from my room to cover my shoulders. It was always cold on the fourth floor. I had concluded that since Xander was a Lycan, he was naturally warmer than humans. That explained why the fireplace in his chamber was immaculate like it had never been used. He didn’t need fires to stay cozy during winter, but I did, so the shawl would have to do since it was nippy.
“Just so you know, Ida, brunettes are not my type.” Xander flashed me a quick smile and winked.
Well, that made me feel somewhat better.
I still didn’t know what we would do today. I was famished, which I thought was normal if I had been bedridden for two days.
We could have breakfast together.
Although I got something delicious last night, watching Xander grab the vest of his two-piece and slip it on, hiding his muscular chest and arms, only made me want to remove every piece of clothing he was wearing and have a repeat of the night before.
I blushed, thinking how crazy it would be if he played hooky to stay in bed with me all day.
“If you keep thinking about dirty stuff, I can’t promise you I won’t lock you up with me and have my ways with you all day long,” I heard Xander snicker on his way to the door.
I turned my head toward him, and I saw him wiggle his eyebrows. How did he even know?
As if to reply to my silent question, he simply tapped his finger on his shoulder to mirror where his mark was on my body, then flared his nose to show me he could smell it, and I reddened even more.
“I’m beginning to regret this bond thing,” I replied wryly.
“Hey.” Xander placed his big hand on his chest dramatically as if my words had pierced him. He then recomposed himself and pressed a guiding hand on the small of my back. “It works both ways, love. You just need to pick it up.”
And with that, we were out of the room and discussed our plans for the rest of our day.
With Xander knowing I was a magic wielder, he had encouraged me to practice magic again. He assured me it would be safe in his quarters, and I believed him, but I was still wary of Leo. The boy had always known this world—this hatred against Unnaturals. He was born in it. I didn’t know what he would do if he saw me performing a spell.Still, I engagingly accepted Xander’s encouragement and trained regularly by doing spells. I always did so when I knew I was alone.I was a little rusty, so I asked Xander if he had any books on spells or casting techniques in the estate. He had looked everywhere after I made the request, but the answer to my question had been “no,” and I received an unfortunate look from Xander, who knew this was important to me.It didn’t surprise me that there weren’t any books on that subject anymore. After Osprey came to power, anything regarding magic was destroyed. Priceless knowledge simply vanished at the beginning of his reign. It broke my heart.I almost regret
Xander POVAs I sat down to review the finances, my thoughts drifted to Ida, whom I had left alone in my wing. I felt guilty for having to leave her behind to tend to my father’s business. All I wanted was to be with her, but my Lycan was in a bad mood, making it difficult to focus on anything else.It had been challenging to keep my Lycan under control ever since we found our mate. He was restless and constantly agitated, unable to bear being away from Ida. I tried my best to remind him of our responsibilities and keep him in check, but he was reluctant to listen. Being a Lycan meant having two personalities. One I could control while the other was harder and had a mind of its own.Despite his protests, I focused on finishing my work so that I could finally be reunited with Ida. My next task was to collect her papers from Mr. Crane, my notary. I had them drafted the morning after I marked her, but I was missing some crucial information before they could be finalized. After much effort
Sitting in the main parlour, I carefully examined the papers that Xander had drafted for my freedom. I ran my finger over the ink of my new name, Ida Raven, which was written in beautiful cursive lettering. It was strange to see my new name officially documented on a piece of paper, which was meant to prove my free citizenship in Airedah. I could hardly believe that I was no longer a slave to the new regime. These were legally binding documents, however, they were a complete lie.As I read through the papers, I couldn’t help but think about my parents and what they would think of my new identity. I wondered if they would be proud of me for surviving the past decade, or disappointed with my choices. I had to bury the Cardinal name to ensure that I didn’t suffer the same fate as my parents. But, I often wondered if they would approve of my actions.I looked around the room and I felt a sense of unease. Airedah wasn’t a safe place for people like me, and the reality of my new life was jus
I had woken up early with Xander to go find Leo. Xander had given me a blanket and asked me to wait in the hallway before entering the room. Once he called me in, I lifted my hand with the oil lamp and entered the darkness. Through the flickering flame of the light, I noticed the small boy lying naked on the ground. As I gazed around the room, my curiosity was piqued by the deep, bloody scratches that marred the stone walls. The room was sparsely furnished, with only a small table and a lone chair, which seemed to have been placed there for a specific purpose. Xander had confided in me that he often stayed with the boy during the restless nights, and the chair was used to keep the boy company.Xander had explained to me that, as an Alpha, he commanded the respect of wolves, and his innate strength made him more powerful than most shifters. Thus, Leo’s wolf never posed a threat to him. To others, that was another issue entirely. However, there were times when Leo became a danger to hims
Xander was walking fast through the familiar corridors. I understood he was taking me back to his floor. My breathing had increased as the pain in my hand became more and more intense. The adrenaline was most likely leaving my body, allowing entrance to the complete agony of my injury.I examined my bent fingers. They were disgusting to look at.Bile rose in my mouth, and I had to swallow it back down. I didn’t know how to fix this; however, I knew going to his room wouldn’t help. I needed this fixed now before the damage became irreparable.“Go to the kitchens. I know someone who fixes injured workers.”“The physician works in the kitchens?” Xander asked, surprised.“No, but the butcher does.”He gritted his teeth at my answer, clearly unhappy with the proposal, but took a left to the stairs and hurried into the kitchens. After the dinner service had ended, most of the cooks had already left, and only the kitchen maids remained to clean and prepare the area for the following day’s ser
Xander POVAs soon as I opened my eyes, I realized that something was wrong. Ida was sleeping next to me, but she was shivering and sweating profusely. The sheets around her were sticking to her damp skin, and I could feel the heat radiating off her body. The smell emanating from her was strange, and it made me worry.I gently touched her cheeks and found that they were red and hot to the touch. She was running a fever. I knew I had to act fast to help her.Yesterday, the butcher had promised to send someone over in the morning. I just hoped that the help would arrive in time before anything else went wrong.Ida’s bandaged hand was resting near the edge of the bed. Her three fingers stuck out, held by splinters and dressings. Saul had said she’d have to keep it for at least three to four weeks, with regular bandage changes, until which time someone would re-examine and adapt the splint to how her healing was advancing.Last night’s events had left me anxious about Ida’s safety. My fath
The journey to Xander’s country house was quite arduous, as we did not take any breaks during the nights. Instead, we relied on the coachmen to switch shifts so that they could rest between driving. We were traveling in two carriages: one for Xander, Leo, and me, and the other for the staff that accompanied us. The latter carriage was larger than ours, which allowed for their comfort and the rotation of coachmen.Along the way, we occasionally stopped for Diana, the head maid, to tend to my injured hand and change my bandages. I was taken aback when I saw her in Xander’s room on the day after my fingers were broken, carefully tending to my wounds. I had always thought that Diana disliked me when I was a maid, as she was often severe with my work. She was probably stricter than the housekeeper, to whom she reported.Lucia had been a constant presence by my side as well, offering her support and care. She sat beside my bed and would alternate with Diana, taking turns to replace the cold
In my dream, I found myself gazing up at the sky, and that’s when I saw it—a cardinal bird, with its plumage a striking shade of red, soaring gracefully through the air. The sun shone down on it, making each feather shimmer and gleam, as if it were a precious jewel. The bird then landed on top of an old tree, with its branches stretching out in all directions. From there, it surveyed the forest below, as if keeping a watchful eye over everything.Suddenly, a bolt of lightning lit up the atmosphere, and before I knew it, the old tree had caught fire. Flames quickly consumed the tree, burning the cardinal with it. For a moment, I thought it was all over, but the bird flapped its wings with all its might, defying gravity, and rising up into the air once again. As the fire scorched its feathers, they grew back stronger and brighter than before. The fire disappeared as quickly as it started, and the cardinal took to the sky once more, leaving a trail of blackened smoke behind it.As I watch
The whip cracked in the air. I felt the leather strings touch my lower back, and as Shrike pulled, I could feel my skin lift and tear. Once the hooks were out, I was flung back near the post. I stopped breathing and tried to control the pain. I had not expected that. “The show is for my personal amusement, as well as to install fear in your mind. Fear in the body is no fun, but fear in the mind, now that is entertaining. Regarding the reasons why I am doing this… let’s just say it’s simply to pass the time until the king arrives, and then we get down to the nitty-gritty.” I felt the leather touch the inside of my ribs. Again, the skin pulled as the hooks receded. Shrike inflicted four more hits, but those had been higher on my back, where my skin was thicker. It pained me less than the previous ones, but I still had to muffle a cry. I started sweating from the pain and noticed that my feet and knees were slipping in the small pool of blood that was accumulating under me. At this rat
Xander POVAs Ida and Diana left the house, I felt a sudden urge to warn them again against attending the meeting. My Lycan and I had a bad feeling about the whole thing, especially since Ida’s scent was different. Although Diana had reassured us that everything was fine, something felt off about her. Over the past few weeks, we had noticed a significant change in her, and even Gideon had mentioned it to me. But we were both at a loss as to what it could be. I couldn’t believe that two prime shifters, like us, couldn’t tell what was wrong with Ida.Leo walked out of the house and looked at me with pleading eyes, hoping to join us. I ruffled his hair and smiled, but had to disappoint him and leave him behind.“Keep Nimu in the house and ensure everything is ready when we return. The horses must be fed properly if we are to leave in the evening.”Leo’s face turned bitter as he realized he wouldn’t join us. He was still young and had a lot to learn. I couldn’t take the risk of putting him
I closed my eyes and allowed my thoughts to focus on unlocking the memory orb. I sensed the magical energy emanating from the glass sphere and let my own energy flow into it, absorbing some of its power. I slowed my breathing, listening to the vibrations passing through my fingers and into my body. I imagined the orb as a small, delicate package, tied with multiple taut strings that protected its contents from being revealed.I whispered an unlocking incantation, trying to tug at the invisible strings within the orb. I felt my magic tugging at the strings, but they refused to budge. I tried again, chanting the incantation with more intent. I sensed the energy within the orb vibrating in response to my magic, but the strings still held fast.I decided to try a different approach. I would force the strings and break them. I summoned all the energy I could muster, feeling my body heat up and the orb becoming warm as well. I focused my power on the strings, envisioning them snapping under
I took out one of my fancier dresses to wear for my outing, and Xander’s voice echoed in my mind, reminding me of the potential dangers that lay ahead. “You both could walk into a trap,” he had warned me. I knew that leaving the house was a risk, but I needed to get out and find out the truth. As I slipped into the dress, I thought about how Xander had always been so protective of me. It was both comforting and frustrating at the same time. But I knew that in this case, he was right. I needed to be careful if I was going to venture out into the world. My hands were on the poster from the bed, and Diana was cinching up my corset. Each time she tightened a lacing, it constricted my chest and made me take a laboured breath. Why did they have to make those things so tight?Diana pulled on another set of strings, and I almost fainted from the tightness.“Oh, might have overdone it. Sorry, Ida. Let me loosen this a bit,” Diana mumbled as she saw my face pale.Xander, visibly frustrated, sat
After several days had passed without any response from Denis, we came to the conclusion that he had no intention of assisting us, and so we began to prepare to leave the city. Diana was extremely upset after learning that her brother was still alive but had not replied to her note. She was on the edge of a breakdown, and I could see the turmoil in her eyes.“Did he read the message you gave him?” Diana asked me repeatedly. We had already discussed this subject multiple times, and I had given her the same answer each time.“I’m not sure. All I know is that Denis took the note and put it in his front pocket. Can you please tell me what was on that piece of paper I gave him?”Diana continued folding our clothes, appearing deep in thought and keeping the note a secret from us. Her behaviour had caused quite a stir with Xander, who was afraid that Diana might betray us and sell us out to her brother. I understood Xander’s concerns, but I also understood why Diana was being secretive. The C
After Diana’s name left Denis’s lips, he rapidly collected himself and cleared his throat. “I’m so sorry. I mistook you for someone I knew long ago. Please forgive my misobservation. Allow me to help you. That was quite a tumble you almost had.” Denis gingerly got up and made his way to help Diana with the mess the fallen tray had left.“Please, let me take care of it, sir,” I interjected, stepping before Diana.Whatever had happened, Diana still seemed a little shaken by the event. She straightened and mumbled, “It’s fine,” then quickly gathered the broken porcelain.I didn’t think my friend almost fell; her path was clear, and Diana was an experienced maid with a steady footing. I thought she let the tray slip by sheer shock. Although the man and Diana appeared to recognize each other, they both acted as strangers. I thought it would be best to separate them before the guards became suspicious.I looked at Xander, who understood my hint and started asking the curator about the chest’
We had been stuck in the house for three long days without anyone coming to get us. Xander, who was usually patient, had become irritable from waiting for so long. Being Unnaturals, we were all too afraid to venture outside, except for Diana, who left to fetch food and supplies. She made sure to return as quickly as possible each time, not wanting to leave us alone for too long. The rest of us, Gideon, Nimu, Leo, Xander, and I, had chosen to stay inside the house, watching the world outside through the windows. The city we were in had strict laws against the colour red, so I dyed my hair brown to avoid drawing any unwanted attention to myself. It was especially important since we needed to go to the Arcane Library and didn’t want to risk being caught. I had brought some of my own clothes, but we had limited space, so I was grateful that Lady Lucia had left some of her dresses and petticoats during her last visit.I wanted to look presentable as the fiancée of a lord, so I wore my nicer
The day had dawned early, and we had eaten our breakfast quickly, eager to set out for Cardinal City. We had enough food packed to last us the rest of our journey, and we knew it was less than a day’s ride away. Our plan was to go directly to the Kestrel’s house, which they owned and used when summoned to court. As we set out, I felt a sense of foreboding as we approached my old home. The memories of Cardinal City, once beautiful and happy, were now tainted by the events of the uprising.Cardinal City sat atop a mountain. The steep rocky mountainsides protected it, and the only way in or out was through the thick, dark forest that lined it from the south. It reminded me of a peninsula, except air surrounded it, and the city was high above the clouds. It was technically a stronghold. The northern, eastern, and western sides of the city were fortified with walls that blended with the jagged rocks of the mountain. The natural rock walls descended toward the ocean, while the ramparts above
On the morning we left Starling Castle, we encountered Gideon and Leo on horseback while we reached the outskirts of Perch. Xander had predicted that we would meet them on our way out, and he was proven right. Gideon seemed anxious to see us so early in the morning, and his demeanour was tense. However, after Diana and Xander explained what had happened, Gideon’s mood also became sour.Despite the tension, I was thrilled to see little Leo again. He was a sweet and lively child, and his presence was a welcome distraction from the others’ brooding mood. He sat between Gideon’s legs, holding the horse’s mane. When he saw me, his eyes lit up, and I moved my horse closer to Gideon’s, inviting Leo to come and sit on my horse for a while. He happily obliged, and we rode together for a bit, chatting and laughing as we went.I wasn’t sure if they had used the forest path to leave the city of Maple, but I knew their horse must have been exhausted. Gideon had even brought back a small chest conta
