Emery’s pov.

My heart feels heavy by the time I make my way back to the room.

Raiden’s conversation keeps playing back in my mind, and the existence of a spy in the Tempest pack isn’t settling either. I’ve been trying to figure out who it could be, because if there’s one thing I've realized since I had that conversation with Raiden, then it’s that I'm in about as much danger as the rest of the Tempest pack because of the existence of this spy.

What if the spy actually works for the Redstones?

Nadia could be keeping an eye out for me and if word was to get back to her that i’m here, and pregnant with Nikolai’s child, she could try to make an attempt on my life once again.

I thought the alliance with Nikolai’s pack was the only thing that could pose a threat to me being found out, but it’s clear I was wrong. This spy, whoever they are, as long as they’re in here I'm not safe.

I feel a shudder run through my veins as that thought settles in my mind.

I strip off my clothes and go into th

My heart thunders harder in my chest the closer we get to Raiden’s office. When he opens it, the thundering becomes a bit harder to control because we’re not going to be alone in here.Morwenna, glossy black hair and impeccable face sits in an upright posture in one of the chairs, and in the other, Mort has a soft smile on his face, his eyes twinkling in an eerily dark way that sends a shiver down my spine. If Morwenna is the darkness of assassins and beautifully evil witches, Mort’s is the darkness of forests on a starless night. It makes sense that they grew up together.Morwenna asks, ”We’re bringing in the traitorous stranger again like we didn’t learn anything the first time, are we Raiden?”Raiden lets out a soft snarl as he walks to his seat, “Shut it.”Mort chuckles and Morwenna shoots him a hurt look that immediately has the laughter dying in his throat. She smiles right after, and Mort, realising what he’s done, seems to tone down his excitement a little bit.Like he wants

Raiden trails me down the hall and into my room. Once we’re in he gives me a look, the same look he gave me a while ago when he noticed how angry I was getting.I wait for the questions to pour forth. It’s strange, but lately I haven't been so scared of Raiden finding out who I am. I’m not telling him, not because I don't want him to know, but because there’s a kind of independence that comes with being able to push the part of me that was Nikolai’s away.If he asks now though, I may tell him.”Are you feeling okay, Emery?”A sigh of relief leaves my lips and I feel a small voice laugh at me mockingly from within.I wave that mocking laughter away, sitting on the bed instead and letting out a characteristic breath, “I’m just annoyed at all that’s happening.”He asks cautiously, ”Is it a mood swing? Y’know…. because of the baby.”My blood threatens to chill over again from fear, but then I notice how rigid Raiden is standing in the corner. The mass of his huge body is as stiff as ston

“Nikolai!Nikolai, wait! Don’t go in there!”Max tries to stop me from going into the packhouse but I ignore him.The dead body at the foot of the stairs is the first thing that catches my attention. It’s a woman’s body. The same woman that identified herself to me as head of the packhouse servants, and who spoke out against Nadia’s treatment of the people working in my pack house.A woman standing to the side, still shuddering from tears as she looks at the body of her lifeless friend cleans her eyes rapidly once she notices my presence. With a bow that puts a sour feeling at the back of my throat she greets through a thick voice, “Alpha Nikolai.”My eyes go back to the dead body, the fourth in less than one month, and a stab of guilt hits me. It’s sharp, like the edge of a knife, but I can't show it. I can’t show the anger running through me. I have to be in control. My voice is firm and commanding as I ask, “What happened here?”The guards standing watch make no move to clear the

Max comes into my office a moment later with a familiar grimace on his face and some sympathy in his eyes as he speaks, “I received your summons, Alpha.”I let out a breath, terrified to do anything else because I don't understand what’s going on in my pack anymore.I don’t know how to handle Nadia, or the way she has my father under her thumb. There’s also the issue of her father.Getting rid of both of them would have been nice but there’s no way to do that without breaking everything I've been working for. I just have to endure Nadia’s antics, while making sure she doesn’t kill any more of my pack members. As for my father, he’s doing what he does best.Being a disappointment.I take my mind off that and look at the alliance sitting on my table instead, I gather the last of my strength and ask, “Have you sent my message over to the Tempest pack?”Max nods, taking a seat as he responds, “We haven’t received a response yet but I'm positive that they have received it.” He pauses for

”I said I don't want to see you.”Emery’s sister is as feisty as ever, and as unwilling to see me as she was the first night I came. We’ve struck a truce though. Well not a truce, but we’ve arrived at a sort of understanding. Each day she tells me she doesn’t want to see me, then I give her some kind of treat, and she calms down long enough for us to have a chat. It’s strange.”I brought cupcakes.”Raven’s face does not brighten up like most children would. Instead her glare hardens even more and she folds her hand over her chest.I frown lightly. The death of another pack member is weighing on me with the force of the three that died already, and I need something to go well for me today, “Don’t be so difficult, bird.”Raven rises to the bait immediately, like a raven whose feathers have been ruffled, “I said not to call me that. And Layla thinks you’re spoiling me y’know. I’m still recovering and I should be listening to my doctor.”She’s too smart for her own good.”Do you want the

The drive back to the packhouse is long and I wish it would last longer, but all rides must come to an end and this one does.I have a lot to do tomorrow.Despite the fact that I married Nadia to bolster my pack’s wealth, I still have pack businesses to run. A wealthy wife doesn’t directly solve all a man’s problems, and when she’s one that goes on a killing spree that becomes a problem…. Well business is the only thing I'd rather focus on right now.Nadia is not in the room when I come in.There’s every chance she’s found out I dismissed all the help in the packhouse and she’s gone to do something stupid, like go to their houses and force them to come back. Like slaves.I hope someone pours a gallon of diesel on her and sets her on fire if she does that. But no, then I would have to pass judgement on that person instead of patting them on the back, and I doubt Nadia’s father will let the pack that killed his daughter go lightly. We were friends when we were little. But for a time in

Raiden is nowhere to be found when I go downstairs for breakfast. As I suspected, room service is not available in the Tempest pack and has not been for a long time.It never made sense to me how she always wanted to come into my room. I suspect she was in there before and already found valuable information, like the alliance document and all the faults I outlined within it.It would make a lot of sense. She knows information can be gotten from there, and she knows I would be blamed for whatever got leaked to the Redstones. Raiden can’t blame me for being relieved that will come to an end now.”YOU seem lost in thought..” I look up at the sound of the voice and see Bryce standing beside me, his scar stark in the light of the morning light. I try not to sigh, because I know what he’s going to say next, “I haven’t been seeing you at harvests lately.”Mort came to me a few days ago and told me Bryce has been pestering him with questions about me. The strange woman, Irene, doesn’t respond to any more of my questions as to who she is or why I've not heard of her in the duration of my stay here.I’ve lived in this pack for more than a month now and I haven't heard of anyone named Irene.Someone should have mentioned her. Bryce. Mort. Raiden. If they had a mind reading elder in their pack…. they could have used her on me the day i was brought here.”How are you sure they didn’t?”Her smile sends goosebumps skittering down the path of my arm but I shake my head, dispelling the fear that comes with her words and refusing to believe what she’s saying, “If Raiden already knew who I was there’s no reason he’d hide it from me.Raiden wouldn’t do that.”She holds my gaze and I hold hers, letting her see and know that I won't buy into little tricks and lies.If what she’s saying is true then it means all the time i’ve been here, i’ve been living a lie. It would mean Raiden does have another reason for keeping me here. He hasn’t given me a

I go farther into the Tempest pack forests because I won't cry anywhere they can see me.I feel so silly that tears are even dropping from my eyes but I don't understand what’s going on in my heart right now.And maybe it was the mean words about me being the reason someone killed themselves, or the meanness itself, but it’s hurt me.It hurts me with the kind of pain that makes swallowing hard and blurs my vision with tears.Wh…. What have I done to be hated like this?I haven’t even been on bad terms with Mor lately. I’ve done all I can to be a good person to her. To believe that she’s misjudged me and I, her, but the look I saw in her eyes…. like I'm something disgusting, worthless. My child is NOT a bastard. And even if I have nothing, I'm still the daughter of my parents. They might not be here right now, but they loved me. I didn’t come from nothing.Only the goddess knows if she’d be able to stand in front of me if my parents were still alive. She’s literally the mean girl of so

Raiden reads the letter in the privacy of his office, and I let him read it alone because the death of the person that left the letter is weighing too heavily on me for me to stand there and read it with him.I didn’t know her.I never knew her, yet she killed herself out of loyalty to this pack, and not out of betrayal. Raiden was right to look at me like he couldn’t believe what he was seeing when I was happy at her death. He’s a good Alpha. Has a good head on his shoulders and…. Thanks to Amanda we might have a fighting chance now. That’s if what’s in the letter is what I suspect it is.I head back to my room, but the room feels like the last place I want to be right now. My chest still feels cramped by more emotions than I can identify so I head back out.My mind can’t stop taking me back to the fact that her brother is in the clutches of people who used him as a tool to threaten her. He’s still with them, and I'm scared. “Miss Emery, the Alpha is here.”I take away shaky hands from the rest of the letters we got from behind the wall and take a deep breath, because I don't know how to explain how I knew they were there.I just… felt they were.“Emery.”I raise my eyes to see Raiden staring at me. I gesture to the seven letters on the floor, each one of them now opened after they had been neatly tucked away behind that wall.Raiden stares at them and it takes me a while to find my voice but i do. I push aside the fear and confusion fighting a small battle in my head and focus on what’s at hand, “We found some more letters in the room. I felt like i had to come here because something wasn’t adding up.She would never have killed herself if she had family being held hostage and used as a means to control her. Her story of being attacked by rogues checks out, she admits to it in these letters. But she also says instead of being killed, she and her family were taken to a private facility where experiments w

The maids are giving me dirty looks as I make my way down the halls of the packhouse.I don’t smell, do i?I take a covert sniff of my clothes but there’s nothing out of the usual there. Why then would they be looking at me strangely? My mind mulls on that thought as I make my way down to the living quarters at the back of the packhouse building.Every pack’s packhouse is a relatively large building. It’s easily the largest building in every pack, and from the size of the Tempest pack’s packhouse, I can tell they were once a force to be reckoned with. Some of the rooms have been locked up and barred, living rooms that have no use anymore or cost too much to be maintained. The section of the packhouse i’m headed to is one Mor suggested i should be forced to live in a while ago.Raiden says they don’t have servants or slaves, they have paid help. Mor wanted me to live with the help.I would have liked to but Raiden insisted I was a prisoner of the pack and that I could easily escape if

“Looking for me?”Mort grins as he makes his way to my side and keeps pace with my particularly slow footsteps. I can’t think of anywhere i have to rush through right now, especially not after what i just heard in there. I shoot Mort a suspicious look as I ask, “Why are you happy?”The threat of the pack being taken from them looms closer every second and he’s wearing a smile. That’s not just odd, that’s suspicious.”You’re thinking something’s up with me aren’t you?”It doesn’t happen often that Mort reads my mind to a T, but sometimes he’s able to correctly guess what’s going through my head, albeit in a way that seems like he’s flirting with me.”I don’t see why you’d be smiling. I just came out of Raiden’s office and I'm not.”He grins, “Well you aren’t the face of the pack. Pack members notice these things y’know. Raiden is known for always having a menacing cold look on his face, and I'm known for having a full emotional spectrum, so if Raiden frowns, I frown….””The pack knows

Raiden is still stone faced when I get into his office and I look away from his face, looking everywhere else but at him, because I'm not sure what I'd do if I hear whatever news he has and see the stony disapproving glare in his eyes too. Someone died. Yes, but that person was a spy.“The Redstones are on the move.”A spy who probably leaked even more information before she killed herself.I don’t have the mental strength to be dramatic right now so I simply lean back and wait for Raiden to fill me in on the details.”According to Mor’s contact in the Redstone pack, Alpha Caius is on the move. He targeted a small pack on the far north side of the state and he came back with a signed document which has the Alpha willing over his pack to him.We don’t know how he did it. We do know however that we’re next on the list so if we’re going to think of anything, we have to think about it now.Raiden sounds depressed.I would too if something like this was about to happen to my pack.I surpr
