Anita's POV
My head snapped back instantly as Marshall shot me a disdainful look. I couldn't help but wonder what was going through his mind right now.
I felt awful about the way Alpha Hades had asked him to leave his office. It was harsh, really harsh, and so unlike him. Even if Marshall had decided to pitch himself so aggressively, it was only because he believed in his qualifications; his confidence was rooted in that belief, not like me, who has nothing to show.
Why did Alpha Hades choose me over him? I feel so bad for Marshall, and I know deep down that I'm the one who should be leaving, not him. My eyes flicked to Alpha Hades as the door clicked shut behind Marshall.
This is purely unfair, just like Marshall had said earlier. Maybe Alpha Hades was upset by how rudely Marshall had addressed him. I should probably talk to him about it.
"Alpha Hades," I called softly, and he turned to face me.
"Yes." He answered, turning his face.
"Please I want to talk to you about him." I said, pointing towards the exit door.
"Yes? What about him?" Alpha Hades asked, his eyebrow raised in curiosity.
"I think he is the most suitable candidate for this job. Honestly, I'm no match for someone like him. He has all the qualifications, the degrees, and everything else. Please, can you give him the job offer? I don’t want the job, but he does. He needs it. Besides, I’m a rogue, and no one would like seeing a rogue like me close to an Alpha. It’s almost impossible for this kind of thing to happen. I feel like he is the one you need, not me," I said firmly, trying to make my point clear.
Yes. I did that.
He needs to understand that I don’t want this kind of job. I need a job, sure, but not this one. This is a very risky job that could easily endanger someone’s life.
Imagine a day when the Alpha is running away from his rivals, and I don’t even know about it. What if a stray bullet meant for him ends up hitting me instead?
If I become his personal assistant, as he suggested, I’ll have to be by his side all the time, no questions asked, with no time for myself.
It would be like he is in control of my life, and I don’t want that. What would people even say about this arrangement?
They might think the Alpha is having sex with me every day. And with his handsome face, what if he decides to do just that?
The risks associated with this job are too high for someone like me. People are so quick to make assumptions and take actions. They are so quick to point fingers and slander someone, especially when they know you have no one to back you up or speak for you. I don’t think I can handle this kind of scrutiny, not with the way things are in this world.
Who knows if he has a girlfriend, and what if she comes back and sees me with her man? She wouldn’t like to acknowledge that I am his personal assistant. She would likely start treating me like I’m his mistress.
That’s just how people are. No one cares about how you feel. Everyone will take advantage of you if you don’t know what you’re doing. That’s why, I do not need to start this job, I need to leave quickly, before it’s too late.
I don’t want problems, especially now that I’m already settled in this pack and have at least found a suitable maid job. For now, nothing else matters.
Only survival matters. Nothing else.
Alpha Hades kept his gaze on me after I finished speaking. I couldn’t read his mind, but his face was as cold and unreadable as always.
"You are the one I choose, and I don’t need any silly excuses from you. What are those things you’re saying? Do they even matter?" He asked, and I nodded, acknowledging his words.
"Yes, they do matter, Alpha Hades. I cannot become your assistant for many reasons.
Firstly, the pack members—they will start mocking me and think I am your secret lover. That’s why I gained your favor instead of Marshall’s. And if he goes out, he will probably spread rumors. Don’t you think people would believe him?
Secondly, considering your pack members again, once they believe what they assume is true, it would lead to me being expelled from the pack, and I don’t want that to happen to me.
I am just a rogue, and everyone usually sees me as an outsider, so I am always very careful about what I do in the pack. I don’t want anything to make them throw me out of here, please. That’s why I am still begging you to please take back Marshall. He is better than I am," I pleaded, looking at him with earnest eyes.
His arms were crossed over his chest, as was Beta Damian’s. They were both undeniably handsome, but if someone had to choose between them, Alpha Hades would come first.
"Anita, you’re not getting my point. I have clearly stated that I do not judge based on qualifications. I judge based on abilities, not status. You really amaze me. How can you be advocating for someone else and forgetting yourself? I remember you saying that you are a rogue, right?" He asked, his face softening with concern.
I nodded, and he smiled, then scoffed, "Do you see what you’re doing to yourself? Instead of thinking about how to earn my approval and become a citizen of this pack, you’re speaking for someone else. Is that how selfless you are?"
My pupils began to dart around in confusion as I looked at him. Was this really coming out of this cold Alpha’s mouth?
Is this for real? I can’t believe it.
Why does he seem so kind? I’ve never seen an Alpha, not even the one in my original pack, act like this. My father wasn’t as soft-hearted as this.
The Alphas and the pack members always did things traditionally. In fact, the Alphas were always the ones orchestrating traditional plans themselves, but this one seems different from all of them.
Just listen to him, saying he doesn’t judge by status, position, or even qualifications?
I stood there, stunned, staring blankly at his face. What more could I say to defend Marshall now?
There was nothing I could think of at this moment.
After he finished speaking, he picked up the cup of coffee in front of him and took a sip. Then, he set it down again, and I could see unease creeping into his expression.
He seemed troubled by something. Suddenly, he slammed the cup on the table, and I flinched.
"Alpha Hades, are you okay?" I rushed to his side, trying to understand what was happening to him, and so did Beta Damian.
He quickly raised his hand, signaling us to stop approaching. We froze in our tracks, a look of surprise on our faces.
"You don’t need to worry. My mate is the one tormenting me," he said, his words heavy with sadness.
My brows furrowed in confusion. What?
"How is that possible, Alpha? Can a mate really torment her other half?" I asked, my voice calmer than ever as I looked at him with sympathy, seeing his heart visibly racing in his chest.
"Yes. They can. They can. I feel like I’m being cheated to the core," he muttered, lowering his head like someone who had lost all hope.
"No, Alpha Hades, please don’t say that. I feel like something is wrong somewhere," I added, and he lifted his head to look at me, his expression turning dangerous.
I quickly stepped back.
"What are you saying? She is with another man, and I confirmed it myself this morning, over a call. I wish I had known earlier," he snapped, his veins bulging as his grip tightened on the cup.
"But are you sure about who she was with? Because I believe that if she had truly cheated, you wouldn’t have had the strength to conduct this interview. You would have been weakened by the effects of the mate bond between you two. Don’t you think so?" I reasoned.
His eyes remained fixed on me, unblinking. I wondered what he was thinking as he gave me this silent treatment. But anyway, I had to finish what I was saying so he wouldn’t start blaming an innocent girl for no reason.
"You know, she could have been with her brother too. You never know. Since the man’s voice was audible on the call you made earlier, I feel like he is someone close to her. You could also check things out for yourself.
It’s better if you go to her house and see her to find out what’s really happening and clear up any doubts you have about her. She is your mate, so you both are supposed to trust each other, not doubt each other," I concluded, letting out a deep, relieved breath.
Alpha Hades's POVThe boldness of the lady standing in front of me is astonishing. Her audacity to plead for that narcissist of a man left me speechless. I despise people who flatter excessively or exude too much ego just because of their accomplishments. They have no idea what life might have in store for them down the line. They clearly don't know. When she finished explaining her perspective on how I concluded that Anita was cheating, I found some logic in her words. I gave her an acknowledging nod, a rare gesture from me."Yeah. I understand what you mean, Anita. Maybe I misinterpreted things earlier. The way you explained it makes it more relatable and understandable. Well, thanks for that. Seems like I'll just go along with your idea then," I said, my voice surprisingly calm and steady.A warm smile began to spread across her cheeks. I nodded again, standing up from my chair.I'll need to get a gift, something thoughtful, because as I am going there now. I need to see with my ow
Alpha Hades's POV"Thank you, Alpha Hades. I am so grateful," Anita said with a deep bow before me, her voice filled with genuine appreciation.I scoffed inwardly at her politeness, though I couldn't deny that it pleased me. It was rare to find someone who could express such simple gratitude without a trace of entitlement. Many others in her position wouldn’t dare to bow like this, especially not in such a respectful manner. Most of them were too full of themselves, feeling too important to acknowledge even the smallest favor with humility.I had learned long ago that people who judged based on appearances or qualifications were often the most ungrateful. They felt they were owed something more, that whatever you gave them wasn’t enough to match what they believed they deserved. It’s why I never made the mistake of trusting people at face value. Their words might say one thing, but their hearts? Another matter entirely. My eyes softened a little as I looked at Anita. Unlike the others
Alpha Hades povSitting in the back of the car, I couldn’t help but feel a certain tension lingering in the air. As Anita and Damian handed me the documents and the bouquet they had retrieved from the ground, I placed the flowers carefully on my left lap while the files were arranged neatly on my right. The beautiful petals brushed against my fingers, but my mind was elsewhere, focusing on the papers before me.I began flipping through the contents of the folders absentmindedly. Standard documents. Legal agreements. Financial reports. The usual. Then something unusual caught my eye—a contract tucked between the pages. I paused for a moment, then pulled it out, my gaze immediately landing on the title:Marriage Contract.A slow, deliberate breath escaped me. I hadn't recalled placing this in here, so it piqued my interest. My eyes quickly scanned down to the line where the bride’s name was written.Anita.The world seemed to narrow in that instant. The name on the contract matched perf
Hades's povAs the car moved through the quiet streets, I couldn’t stop thinking about what was about to happen. My thoughts were racing, my heart pounding. We were getting closer to Anita’s apartment, and with each passing second, I felt the weight of everything. Tonight, I was going to tell her the truth, that she was my mate, destined to be with me. It wasn’t something I could run from or ignore anymore. The pack elders had tried to control many things in my life, but this wasn’t going to be one of them. My marriage, my mate, these were my decisions, not theirs. I wouldn’t let them interfere. I’d talk to Anita, bring her to the packhouse, and we’d figure things out together. This wasn’t just about me; it was about us.The car pulled up in front of her apartment building, the engine’s quiet hum disappearing as it came to a stop. I glanced up at the tall building, knowing she was in there somewhere, probably unaware that her life was about to change forever. I took a deep breath, smo
Anita’s POVAfter some time, Martha went inside. I stood up and dragged the bag from the table, wanting to go in too but as a first step, the sound of Martha’s brother, Zach, yelling from the living room broke through the quiet stillness in our small apartment.“Martha! Take out the trash!” Zach’s voice rang through the walls, followed by a frustrated sigh from the other room. They both walked into the kitchen, meeting me there. I turned my face to Zach, meeting a cold stare from him and to Martha. She groaned loudly immediately, her head falling back against the wall behind her in defeat. “Why do I always get stuck with the grossest chores?” she muttered, looking at me for sympathy.I smirked, “Because you’re the youngest, and he knows you’ll do it,” I said, half teasing but mostly glad it wasn’t me.Before she could protest further, Zach appeared in the doorway, his arms crossed over his chest. “Martha, come on. It’s literally your turn. Don’t make this a thing.”Martha rolled her e
Hades' PovMy fingers tightened around the flowers I had brought as I stepped out of the elevator. I had barely noticed the two figures walking out, leaning close, whispering to one another. Their closeness piqued my curiosity. The faint sound of their voices brushed past me, but I didn’t turn to look. Instead, I kept my focus ahead. Something about the way one of them moved caught my attention, but I pushed it aside. I was here for one reason: to find my mate. But as the elevator doors began to close behind me, I had an odd sense of unease. The voice of one of those women stirred something in me, something deep, like a distant memory that didn’t quite come into focus.I frowned, turning slightly, wondering why it felt so familiar."Anita?" I called out without thinking, but I had no reason to. The name just slipped out, like a reflex. There was no answer. The doors sealed shut, and they were gone, leaving me alone in the hallway.I shook my head, trying to shake off the strange feeli
Anita's PovMartha had teased me endlessly earlier about how jumpy I’d been, but there was something unsettling about tonight. The voice I’d heard when we left for the trash run still lingered in my mind, playing over and over. The tone was too familiar, too much like Alpha Hades. But it didn’t make any sense. Why would he be here? I shook my head, trying to push the thought away.Martha had always joked that I was overworked, and maybe that was it. Maybe my mind was just playing tricks on me.After all, what reason would Alpha Hades have to be anywhere near my apartment building? He belonged in his packhouse, dealing with important matters, not wandering around random neighborhoods in the city.I couldn’t help but smirk at the thought of it. The Alpha, in my part of town? That was ridiculous. Still, the voice stayed with me, tugging at the corners of my thoughts.By the time Martha and I returned from taking out the trash, I was still lost in my thoughts. The cool air had helped clea
Anita's PovMartha, ever the joker, had kept up her teasing, but I was barely listening. My mind was elsewhere, running through all the possibilities, which none made sense. The flowers looked too much like the ones Alpha Hades had been holding earlier, but there was no reason for them to be here. It was impossible.“Maybe it’s a secret admirer,” Martha suggested with a wink, nudging me playfully.I scoffed, though a weak smile tugged at the corners of my lips. “Yeah, right. Some admirer who doesn’t have the guts to leave a name.”Zach was still on edge, pacing slightly as he eyed the flowers suspiciously. “I don’t like it. You're trying to misquote me Martha. How can someone leave flowers outside our door after a creepy guy left. It doesn’t feel right.”I glanced at him, trying to ease his nerves. “It’s probably nothing, Zach. Just a misunderstanding.”Martha, ever the one to lighten the mood, grinned mischievously. “Or maybe… it’s your cheap husband who is finally coming back to cla
Alpha Hades’s POVI couldn't believe what was happening. The man, Zoe, who had been stirring the pot, spewing lies about Anita, was now standing in front of me. His arrogance was thick enough to slice with a knife, but as I took a step toward him, it seemed to dissolve into something else—fear, uncertainty, maybe even guilt. The man was not one of us. I could feel it in my bones even as he had lied earlier. Immediately, I lunged at him, grabbing the collar of his shirt and yanking him up, his legs shaking defensively in the air. Looking him straight in the eye, I asked, "Who are you?" My voice sharp and low. "How come I've never seen you around the pack before? Are you even one of our people?"The man’s eyes darted around the room as if he were looking for an escape route. His gaze briefly met mine, but then quickly dropped to the floor. He stuttered, “I... I’m one of the people here... from the clan.”I didn’t believe a word he was saying. Something didn’t add up. If he had truly be
Hades's POVI could feel the pressure building inside me, my thoughts scattered, and my blood simmering with frustration. The walls of the office seemed to close in on me. At this moment, I feel like my head is about to explode. First, it was that damn woman causing trouble at the banquet, trying to disgrace Anita with her lies. Then, I had to face the elders—each one of them demanding that I divorce my mate. And now, the clansmen were at the door, shouting, furious, and demanding that I cast Anita out of the pack. How is this possible? How did everything turn into a whirlwind of chaos just because of one woman’s slander? My mate, my beloved, the one who was chosen for me by Moon Muse herself, was being torn apart by false accusations. She did nothing wrong. She didn’t kill her father; she didn’t start the fire that took the life of the old Alpha. But here they were—clansmen who didn’t know the truth, elders who were too quick to judge, and a pack that was ready to turn its back on
Anita's POVThe moment Alpha Hades' words fell, an urgent knocking echoed against the office door. It was rapid, insistent, and the annoyance it carried was unmistakable. Alpha Hades' expression shifted, a flicker of irritation crossing his features as he waved his hand dismissively, signaling Beta Damian to open the door. Beta hesitated for only a second before pulling the door open. To my surprise, several elders stood in the doorway, their eyes sharp with authority. When they saw me, their brows furrowed immediately, the tension in the air was thick. They exchanged a few brief looks before one of them—an elder with silver hair and a scowl to match—spoke, his voice deep with disdain. "Let’s talk about the conditions," he began, his eyes never leaving me. "What do you want to divorce Alpha and leave our pack?" The words stung, slicing through the silence. The question seemed so out of place, and yet, I knew exactly where it was coming from. The elders were clearly unsettled by the
Anita's POVThe air around me was thick with tension, with whispers, accusations, and the overwhelming weight of eyes that drilled into me like daggers. My throat was tight, and my chest ached as though a great weight was pressing down on me. I barely noticed when Amara stepped forward, her expression cold and calculating, her eyes fixed on me like a predator hunting its prey. I only had a split second to brace myself before the words spilled from her lips. "You were kicked out of the pack, then turned around and deceived Alpha Hades," Amara spat, pointing a finger directly at my nose. "Relying on your means to make him marry you. Do you want to ruin this pack again?"Her voice cut through the already tense air like a knife, sending a shockwave through the guests. The room, already rife with doubt and suspicion, erupted once again. The murmurs, gasps, and shocked exclamations crescendoed into a chorus of disgust. My heart pounded violently in my chest, and my breath came in shallow g
Anita’s POV The impact of my stepmother’s words was immediate and catastrophic. Like a bomb dropped into the heart of the banquet hall, the shockwaves reverberated through the guests, shaking the very foundation of what I had fought so hard to build here. The murmurs began like a ripple on the surface of a pond, but within moments, the room was filled with whispers, gasps, and unrestrained exchanges of questions. “What is Alpha Hades talking about? Has our Luna killed anyone?” “Wait, she’s the princess of that pack? Then why is she working as a rogue in ours? Did they kick her out?” The shock was obvious. Eyes turned toward me in disbelief, eyes that once looked at me with a certain degree of respect now clouded with doubt, confusion, and a hint of suspicion. The words my stepmother had thrown at us felt like daggers, and I could feel each one of them sinking deep into my skin. My body went numb, my heart racing as I tried to keep my composure. It was like the world was spinning o
Anita's POVThe moment my stepmother, Evelyn, and stepsister, Amara, stepped through the doors of the banquet hall, the atmosphere shifted. It wasn’t just the weight of their presence. It was the way the room seemed to contract, like air being sucked out of a space too small to hold it all. My eyes met theirs across the room, and a wave of cold dread washed over me. Evelyn, with her perfect but destructive smile, and Amara, who had a calculating gleam in her eyes that made my stomach twist in knots. They didn’t have to say a word for me to feel the venom they carried. Their gazes met mine, then swept dismissively over the other guests, as if we were beneath them. I swallowed hard, feeling my throat tighten, a cold shiver creeping down my spine. The murmurs around us began almost immediately, like an undercurrent that started low but quickly grew into something more dangerous.“This is our pack’s banquet. Why would Alpha Hades invite them?”“I heard the elder is pushing for Amara to
Anita's POVThe clink of glasses, the hum of conversation, and the low murmur of the crowd faded to a complete hush as Alpha Hades led me onto the stage. His hand, warm and steady in mine, was the only thing comforting me as I stepped into the glaring spotlight. The eyes of the pack were upon us, and though the room was filled with familiar faces, the weight of their gaze made me feel like a stranger in my own skin. I tried to swallow my nerves, but my throat felt dry, and my pulse raced faster with every second that passed.I could hear the shuffle of feet as guests shifted in their seats, their curiosity intense. The eyes of the pack, elders, warriors, and betas, all locked onto us as we took center stage. I glanced up at Alpha Hades, his broad frame standing tall beside me, exuding a confidence I could only dream of having. His expression was stoic, his features set in their usual hardened mask. But his hand, wrapped tightly around mine, told me everything I needed to know: he was
Anita's POVThe atmosphere in the makeup room had shifted from electric tension to something lighter. I couldn’t shake the memory of Alpha Hades’s kiss, and every time my gaze flickered toward him, I felt the heat of it all rushing back to me. He had this way of looking at me intensely—that made my heart race every time. But then, as if to ground me, he calmly turned to the makeup artist who had been standing silently by, waiting for him to give the go-ahead."Could you touch up Anita’s makeup?" Hades’s voice was low and controlled, but there was an edge to it, as if he was trying to maintain a sense of normalcy after the intimate moment we’d just shared. The makeup artist, a young woman with short auburn hair and gentle eyes, immediately noticed the smudge of lipstick on my lips. Her gaze flicked between Hades and me, and I could feel the blush creeping up my neck, coloring my face even more. It was ridiculous, but I couldn’t help it. The intensity of the moment was still so fresh, a
Anita's POVAlpha Hades walked toward me, his presence so commanding that the room seemed to shift with his every step. People around him, sensing the intimacy that was about to unfold, tactfully retreated, leaving us alone in the quiet of the dressing room. The air felt different now, charged with something unspoken, an electric tension that hummed beneath my skin. I stood frozen for a moment, unable to move, my breath shallow as I stared up at him. His eyes, dark as the night, met mine with an intensity that made my heart race faster than I could comprehend. There was a calm confidence in his every move, but something in the way he looked at me, something in the predatory gleam in his crimson eyes, made the space between us seem impossibly small. My pulse quickened. I wasn’t sure if I was more afraid or excited, but the emotions mixed together in a cocktail that left me breathless. As he drew closer, his hand brushed lightly against my back. The sudden coldness of his touch made m
