Connor's POV
I decided to throw a curveball at Hailey, hitting her up with the kind of chores only Omegas needed to do. As a girl scheming for the fancy life through deception, she'd definitely say no right on the spot. In that case, she'd go to Grandpa straight-up to break our mate bond! Since I wasn't the one mentioning it, Grandpa wouldn't nag me about it. What a perfect plan! However, things didn't go the way I wanted. Hailey agreed to my request so quick that my jaw dropped. Gazing at her clear and innocent eyes, I couldn't help but start doubting my judgment. Maybe she wasn't the cunning type I pegged her as? Just as I was on the fence about speaking up, I got a mind-link from Grandpa. He scolded me for leaving Hailey right after the mating ceremony, his growl earsplitting. 'Damn it, Hailey must've snitched on me,' I complained to myself, hating her even more. "Come meet me in the pack house now," Grandpa ordered, giving me no room to say no. I had to head for the Blaze Pack to talk to Frank. On the way, my wolf Derek grew restless. His mood sent me into a tizzy, cranking up my irritability. A while later, I reached the pack house. After parking my car, I walked straight to Grandpa's office, trying to get things done ASAP. As expected, Grandpa ticked off as soon as he saw me. "You just had the mating ceremony! How could you leave her there all by herself? It's her first day in L.A. What if she loses her way?" he yelled. "I already caved, making her my mate 'cause you said so. Isn't that enough?" I retorted. Grandpa's face darkened right after hearing my answer. "If you can't even take care of your mate, how do you expect me to believe that you'll be able to run the Blaze Pack?" he questioned, his eyes ablaze with anger. "I never wanted her to be my mate!" I finally lost my cool. "How could someone agree to mate with a stranger so easily? She's definitely up to something. Perhaps it's our wealth. Besides, I don't need a mate to be a competent Alpha." "Bullshit! Without a Luna, the pack will crumble. And it was not Hailey's idea but mine. I begged her to do so cuz she's your fated mate," Grandpa snapped before snorting. "Even if you don't mark her, Elena will never be your mate." I hated it when Grandpa threatened me this way, even though I wasn't into Elena. "Don't worry. My wolf feels zip for her," I laughed in self-deprecation. "Perhaps the Moon Goddess didn't get a mate for me." "That's 'cause you never let Derek chill out to truly feel her," Frank's voice tailed off, tinged with disappointment. His words had me lost in thought. Ever since my first shift as a kid, Derek'd been off the hook. Our communication had always been rough and painful. It was part of the reason why I wasn't down for having a mate. I didn't trust anyone other than my family. And I worried that Derek would hurt my mate. Seeing me in a daze, Grandpa told me to go home and think it through. As I made my way out of the pack house, my mind was in turmoil. I blamed Hailey for it. She must've fooled Grandpa. Or he wouldn't defend her every time. Back in my car, I leaned back in the seat, trying to strike up a convo with my wolf. "Derek, is Hailey really our mate?" I asked. Though I hate to admit it, Frank's words did a number on me. As expected, Derek stayed silent. He never dropped so much as a word on me. All I got was his grumpy yet wrenching growls. Then, those cruel memories came flooding back, the pain devouring me, forcing me to stop. Finally, I gave up. I rolled down the car window, letting the cold night breeze snap me back to reality. I'd been trying my best to keep a lid on the past. Otherwise, I'd end up like Derek, losing control of myself and going insane. When I got home, I saw Hailey buzzing around in the utility room. She was mopping the floor, looking cheerful as heck. But after that good scolding from Grandpa, the only feeling I had for her was scorn. "Hailey," I called out, my voice icy. She lifted her head, her big eyes lighting up at the sight of me. "What's up, Connor?" "Time to make dinner," I reminded her. She nodded without any hesitation. "Okay, I'm on it." As I stared at her back, my disdain grew deeper. 'Yeah, go on. Keep on acting. Like I'd ever gonna buy it,' I snorted inwardly. The more she toed the line, the more I was convinced she was faking it. 'I gotta blow her cover today,' I swore to myself. After she served the dishes, I found fault with her on purpose, nitpicking her cooking and even the plating. Yet all she did was listen quietly without even trying to defend herself, adding to my belief that she had ulterior motives. "Connor, I think you might've misunderstood me," Hailey finally piped up, her tone calm and resolute. "I get that you don't like me. After all, we've become mates only a few hours ago. But I'm doing all this simply because I've promised Frank to take good care of you. So you don't have to be so wary of me, okay?" she sighed. I fixed her with an intense gaze. "Wary? Why would l? You think you're strong enough to pose a threat to me?" "You wouldn't? But when I was doing the housework just now, you kept staring at me. Aren't you suspecting that I would steal something? If you are, you can rest assured. Though I'm from a poor region, I have my pride. I would never resort to stealing." She looked me straight in the eye, not a trace of fear in her gaze. I widened my eyes in disbelief, thinking, 'Seriously? How did she even reach that conclusion? Is she seriously not getting how much of a hard time I'm giving her, or she's just playing dumb?'Hailey's POVI gazed at Connor with sincerity, hoping that he believed I meant what I said. However, he gave no reply, just savoring the dishes in silence. After he finished the food on his plate, he demanded, "Wash all the clothes before you go to bed." With that, he strode out of the dining room.I watched as his figure faded down the corridor, feeling confused.'What a weirdo,' I murmured. To get to know Connor better, I made friends with Vita this afternoon. Turned out he got this quirk about hating strangers crash over at his spot. So, those Omegas and cooks would come at scheduled times and leave right after they finished their jobs.Since it was late in the night, naturally, it was just Connor and me in this spacious villa. Now that he returned to his room, I was all alone. And the villa became even quieter.I felt a bit lonely, but also kinda digging the freedom. After I headed back to my room, I opened my suitcases and started to sort out my stuff. The wardrobe was so huge th
Connor's POVAfter warning Hailey, I returned to my room. Truth was, quiet or not, a good night's sleep was impossible for me.Every night, I had to try blanking out my brain. It was the only way I could get some rest. Less noise would make it easier for me to do so, though.Good thing she didn't make a peep after that. The next morning, I woke up as the sunlight shone through the curtains. After washing up, I came downstairs, wondering what Hailey would cook for breakfast. To my surprise, the dining table was empty.I couldn't help but sneer, thinking, 'I knew she was putting on an act! After just one day, she gave up. Well, talk about persistence.'I turned around, ready to leave. But just as I passed by the laundry room, I caught a scene through the cracked door that astonished me—Hailey was lying out cold on the floor.I gasped, a weird surge of anxiety running through me.Then I rushed over and carried her out. Her body was so soft, which keyed up the unease in me.Werewolves rar
Hailey's POVThe last thing I remembered was that I finally fixed the washer. And just as I was about to run it, I blacked out.Well, to be precise, I fell asleep.I even dreamed of Connor. Playing some loud music to wake me up.By the time I woke up, it was about noon.To my surprise, I was back in my room instead of lying on the cold floor.'Did Vita find me and bring me back?' I wondered. As I turned my head, however, I found a guy sleeping on the sofa with his back against me.Curious, I crept up on him, and a familiar face came into view. It was Connor.I immediately stepped back, almost screaming out of shock.I thought, 'Why is he sleeping in my room?'So it wasn't a dream? He was the one who brought me back here?'After making sure that he showed no signs of waking up, I sighed in relief.Since I got nothing else to do, I started observing him, my mate. His pajamas' hem was crawled up, revealing a bit of his tight waist. A ray of sunlight filtered in through the curtains and s
Connor's POVBack in the room, I stood in front of the wardrobe, trying to pick out today's outfit. After pondering for a while, I chose a deep blue shirt, figuring it could bring out my chill vibes. After fixing up my collar in front of the mirror, I started clipping my cufflinks. Thinking of Hailey, I couldn't help sneering.'Wanna butter Grandpa up and manipulate me? She's cunning indeed! Well, maybe I should just let her invite Grandpa. See what she's got up her sleeve.'Snapping out of it, I went downstairs, only to find Hailey buzzing around the dining room. The morning sunlight streamed through the window, casting a golden halo on her.She looked a bit down, probably 'cause of how I brushed her off earlier."You wanna invite Grandpa? Go ahead," my voice cut through the silence.Hearing my words, she stopped what she was doing, turning around with a surprised look.Didn't see that coming, huh?"Y-you're cool with that?" she asked hesitantly.I sneered, "Of course. Make sure you
Hailey's POVI thought Connor had already forgiven me, as he didn't mention what happened this morning again the entire day.Now that he was kicking me out, I realized I was being too naïve.But I never meant to hurt him. It was just my gut.Iris let out a whimper in my mind, seeming disheartened."It was all my fault," she murmured."No," I immediately reassured her. "It's great to stay alert. It's what saved us from those boars, remember?"She just replied with a grumble.I tried to cheer her up, saying how living here wasn't free. There were too many rules, and we both needed some breathing room."Iris, I know it's tough, but we gotta stay strong," I concluded. She signed, "Hailey. I get it, but it sucks seeing Connor treat you like that.""He doesn't get us, and probably never will," I replied, feeling a bit down."But we can't just throw in the towel. We've promised Frank," she said, sounding all determined."Hell no, and honestly, I'll have to spend all my time doing chores if I
Hailey's POVThe name sounded incredibly familiar. One of Connor's buddies mentioned it the first day I rocked up at this villa. Saying things like she was a good match for him.Putting on a polite smile, I greeted, "Hello."Elena gave a curt nod, then sauntered over to the living room, plopping down on the sofa. With a tone that commanded attention, she piped up, "I'd like a cup of coffee, please."I froze for a bit. Eventually, I still went to the kitchen.Just as I was about to get brewing, however, Elena suddenly changed her mind."Hold up," she said, a disdainful smile curled at the corner of her mouth. "Almost forgot Matt told me you sucked at making coffee."I paused, feeling embarrassed."Never mind. I'll do it then," she went on, her tone filled with pride. "Now, watch and learn."Elena took out a bag of coffee beans from the counter and poured some into the coffee machine.Part of me wanted to bail, but leaving her here felt kinda rude.So I just stood aside, quietly watchin
Connor's POVElena stood in front of me and looked reluctant. She seemed to have something to say to me.I gave her a cold glance. She was in no place to question me. I was sure that she could feel it from my aura."Connor, I..." Elena hesitated."Elena, you shouldn't be here," I cut in. My voice was devoid of any emotion. "You know I don't like it."Elena was startled by my sudden indifference. She hesitated for a moment, then forced a smile on her face. "I'm just concerned about you, Connor.""There's no need," I replied briefly and firmly. "I can handle my own business."The color drained from Elena's face. She would only embarrass herself more if she stayed. So, she quickly cleared her mood and gracefully turned around to leave. As the door closed, she turned back and glanced at me. Her eyes were filled with complex emotions.I sat in front of the table, thinking about what had happened earlier this day. When I woke up this morning, I was surprised that I slept so soundly again.D
Hailey's POVAs I walked toward the kitchen, I heard Elena talking to Connor in a begging tone. Apparently, she didn't want to go.I was not interested in eavesdropping, so I closed the kitchen door.At the thought of leaving here quickly, I opted for the quickest fix—sandwiches. I reached for the peanut butter and jam, and some whole-meal bread from the cupboard. After smearing one slice with peanut butter and another with strawberry jam, I sandwiched them together and cut them into neat triangles. With swift action, I diced up some carrots and cucumbers into crisp strips as side dishes. To round off the meal, I whipped up a pot of tomato vegetable soup. I tossed in fresh tomatoes, onions, carrots, and celery, poured in some water, sprinkled a pinch of salt, and let it simmer on low. When I walked out of the kitchen with the food, I was surprised to find that Elena had already left. That was out of my expectation. But it was good for me though. Without Elena here, I could leave more
Hailey's POVMy heart pounded. I could only hear the intense thumping in my chest amidst the ringing in my ears.Unwilling to see me get hurt, he even risked his life to protect me.Why was he so good to me?Soon, the car arrived at the door of Connor's mansion. As the car door opened, a lot of people gathered around to carefully help Connor out.I couldn't stand steady and was pushed to the side.I saw the wounds on Connor's back and shoulders. His clothes had been torn by the rogue's claws, leaving deep scratches, and his shirt was already stained red with blood.Connor was surrounded by those people, about to leave. With wobbly steps, I tried to get closer but failed due to the crowd.Just then, Connor suddenly turned around and said, "Hailey, come with me."The crowd made way.I hurriedly ran towards him.Connor smirked imperceptibly. My heart was in a mess.I ran to Connor and instinctively grabbed his sleeve amid the chaos, while he didn't push me away.At night, the pack guards
Connor's POVI stood at the edge of the Shadow Forest, and in the darkness, the werewolves of Matt's pack seemed somewhat fidgety. They didn't expect my appearance, and I had the accompanying guards of the Blaze Pack quickly hold them.I walked quickly to Hailey's side. She looked fragile, her eyes revealing helplessness and pleading.Hailey's face turned pale as if all her energy had been drained. She couldn't stand up.My heart tightened, and I immediately lifted her up.Hailey, like a broken doll, leaned against me, trembling uncontrollably.Since I had known Hailey, I had seen how energetic she was when she smiled and how resilient she was when she cried. I had seen a bright and cheerful Hailey. But I had never seen such a fragile Hailey, as if her life was about to be severed.I wrapped Hailey with a coat, holding her in my arms."Ike, have a check."Ike quickly stepped forward. He was an experienced pack doctor. He carefully inquired about Hailey's situation and picked up the gl
Hailey's POVI stared at Matt, a surge of anger rising in my heart, while at the same time, I engaged in a conversation with my wolf Iris in my mind."Iris, can you feel it?" I asked in my heart."I can. They are all ordinary werewolves from the same wolf pack, except for Matt, who has the Alpha bloodline." Iris' voice revealed a hint of disdain."Let me take over your body to give him a lesson. He's too arrogant!" Iris expressed her dissatisfaction.I felt the breath of my wolf starting to release. Perhaps sensing my pressure, Matt and the others took a few steps back in fear.Seeing humans passing by, I realized it was not a proper time."Iris, it is not the time now. We need to be patient," I persuaded."Alright, but don't endure for too long," Iris replied reluctantly.I took a deep breath, trying to calm down, and then smiled at Matt, saying, "Sure, I'll hang out with you guys. But you gotta arrange my work."Surprised that I changed my mind, Matt quickly said, "Great, let's go."
Hailey's POVJust as I was about to leave, Connor suddenly stood up. He strode directly towards me with a calm yet resolute look. "I'll send you back," he said.I was taken aback, then smiled and shook my head, "No need, I can handle it myself."He ignored my answer, grabbed the car keys, and walked out. As he walked past me, he commanded coldly, "Follow me."Surprised yet oddly touched. I followed him to the car and got in.Soon, he drove me to the warehouse near the café, where I was living.Connor glanced around my place as if scrutinizing there. "You live here?"I quickly said, "It's good and safe here. And Vernon said I don't have to pay rent."Hearing my words, his lips tightened. After a moment, he took my hand and said, "Come back with me.""I really like it here," I pulled my hand back and explained earnestly. He didn't press further. He just nodded gently before turning on his heel and walking away.I watched as he receded into the distance, leaving me somewhat at a loss for
Hailey's POVAs we walked out of the supermarket, Connor abruptly halted at the exit, then he looked at me, saying, "Hand over the groceries."I stared at him, taken aback by his sudden offer. Before I could respond, he had already seized the shopping bag from me with a firm grip."Connor, I..." I wanted to say that I could handle it myself, but he just glanced at me, saying, "Let's go, don't keep Grandpa waiting."I had no choice but to keep up with his pace. When we got in the car, he suddenly broke the silence with a short and direct question, "Are you cold?"I paused for a moment before shaking my head, "No, I'm good."He nodded and didn't say anything more, but I caught his fleeting glimpse at the thermometer as if verifying my answer.Quietly observing him, I found something different—he seemed to shed some of his air of superiority and looked more genuine.Soon we arrived. With the groceries just purchased in hand, we walked into the villa together.Frank was already there, sea
Hailey's POVIt was a workday, and there were only a few customers in the café.The sunlight poured through the window, casting a warm glow inside. Everything was calm and serene.Nancy and I were busy preparing desserts and coffee beans for the day. Then, several customers walked in. While they looked ordinary, their scrutinizing gazes made me feel uneasy. They took their seats, and all they ordered was a glass of free water. However, they didn't seem interested in drinking it. Instead, they were whispering among themselves, casting furtive glances our way.Their behavior struck me as suspicious, so I warned Nancy to keep an eye on them. Not long after, one of them suddenly clutched his stomach and exclaimed loudly, "Something wrong with this water! I've got a terrible stomachache after drinking it."Nancy immediately rushed over and asked, "Sir, are you alright? Should I call for a doctor?"The man persisted, "A doctor? Call the police! There must be problems with your water. You ha
Connor's POVI walked into Twilight Café, a coffee shop that stood in stark contrast to the familiar haunts I frequented.Hand-painted coffee cups adorned the walls, and the wooden tables and chairs radiated a rustic simplicity. My gaze swept through the store, finally locking onto Hailey. She noticed me too, and seemed surprised by my presence. She did not come over immediately, but instead watched me from afar, her eyes a mix of emotions I couldn't quite describe.A subtle displeasure emanated from her stare, stirring up an inexplicable feeling within me.My wolf, Derek, seemed to sense my emotional turmoil and began to stir from the depths of my heart.Walking to her, I tried to keep my voice steady and composed. "A cup of coffee, please."She didn't say a word, merely nodding before turning to prepare the coffee. As her figure receded from view, a wave of complicated emotion welled up in my heart.I found a seat by the window and looked at the street outside, my thoughts drifting.
Hailey's POVAs I left Connor's villa, I felt an unexpected sense of relief, despite the uncertainty ahead. With my luggage in tow, I passed through the bustling streets of Los Angeles. Finally, I arrived at a Twilight Café.As I pushed open the door, I was greeted by the comforting aroma of coffee and the cozy ambiance.I inhaled deeply, anticipating the fresh start of my life."Hi, you're here early." A gentle male voice interrupted my thoughts.Looking up, I saw the café owner, Vernon Rice, approaching me with a warm smile.Fine lines crimped around his eyes as he smiled and reached out a friendly hand to me, saying, "I thought you'd come tomorrow.""I don't have much to pack, so it took me little time," I replied, feeling the rough marks of hard work on his hand as I shook it.Noticing my luggage, Vernon remarked, "Seems you're preparing to settle in here?""Yes, sir," I replied somewhat sheepishly, "I hope I won't be a bother.""Not at all. I have a small room here, originally in
