83. Oh No!

The nurse’s eyes widened, her disbelief still evident as she processed the situation. I could feel Brenda tense up beside me, trying to think of something to say to defuse the tension, but the truth hung heavily in the air.

“Yes, I’m Veronica Carlisle,” I finally admitted, my voice barely a whisper, the weight of my confession pulling me down. “But please, don’t tell anyone. I’m begging you.”

The nurse blinked in disbelief, clearly trying to reconcile the gossip she’d heard with the reality standing before her. “I’ve heard so much about you in the news, but I never thought I’d meet you in person,” she said, still staring as if she expected me to disappear.

“She…” Brenda started, trying to interject, but she faltered, her words caught in her throat.

I took a deep breath and stepped forward. “Most of what you’ve heard about me isn’t true,” I said softly, trying to keep my voice calm and steady. “Please understand, I’m just trying to protect my daughter.”
