I closed my eyes and concentrated on her pain. I felt the connection and I pulled on it, pulling all her pain into me. Some pains never went away but I could make it bearable for her, she’d be able to breathe through it.

Her pain burned inside me. It was a white, hot fire of pain and regret and I felt it surge through me. I couldn’t breathe for a few seconds and then I switched all my emotions off. It was the only way I’d get through it.

Adara stood up and walked towards the door. “You can sleep with us tonight.” The door closed softly behind her. I stayed on the couch and let all the emotions inside me settle as tears ran down my face unchecked.

A few hours later, James knocked on the door and told me it was time to go down to the clearing. Carl and Frank were on their way back with Christian’s body. I had showered and dressed in a suit but I still felt broken, even with my emotions switched off.

I stepped out onto the patio as the pack stood in two lines waiting for me to lead them

The day after Christian’s funeral, I closed his bedroom door, I couldn’t walk past it every day and see his stuff. I also didn’t want anyone to change or move anything in it. It was his room.I woke up in the mornings and felt like the walking dead. I let James take over completely at the hotel and I hadn’t been there in weeks. Adara needed to get back into her routine as well so I took Kai in the mornings. We would sit in the study and I would read while he slept on the couch next to me. I’d feed him and change him before immersing myself in Karani’s diaries again. The pages were now revealing themselves to me.I looked at Kai as he slept and then I glanced over at that stuffed dinosaur that was now sitting on my desk. I touched the talisman around my neck, it was ice cold to the touch, but I always felt the flow of magic from it.I closed my eyes and I concentrated. I saw the flame in my mind and I touched it, it didn’t burn me. I was drawn to the flame and the words just came. “I c

“From Superstar to show off.” Jessica regarded me coolly and slapped Malachi’s hand away as he tried to redo the buttons.I shrugged without saying anything because it all still felt surreal. I had tried to conjure up the flames again but nothing happened and I felt disappointed in myself. Adara took Kai from me and I stood up.Malachi grinned as he read my mind and took another apple from the bowl and threw it at my head. His throw was significantly faster than Adara’s throw had been, but again instinct took over.“Stǫðva.” The apple stopped and when I lowered my hand it fell to the floor. Jessica looked mildly impressed and Malachi was grinning from ear to ear.“Did you guys hear that?” Jessica frowned and I knew she was thinking now.“I started magic when I was nine and I’ve never heard anyone speak like that before. Where did you learn that?”“I don’t know, I said stop and it stopped.” She was now looking oddly at me and then her eyes brightened with some sort of revelation.“It s

Dezrael’s pregnancy had been a relatively easy one but she hated every minute of it. The bigger her stomach grew, the more Sean distanced himself from her. She could understand his irritation but not his distance. She had been eight months pregnant when Sean’s anger was finally given a voice. “I don’t understand why you had to do this!” He was pointing to her stomach and Dezrael had just about had enough.“I told you why, Sean. My reasons haven’t changed. We discussed this before I went to Alaska.” She could feel the resentment coming from him.“No, Dezi, you talked and I listened. I had no say in this and that is really hitting me hard.” He was still looking pointedly at her stomach.“It’s almost over, Sean, just a few more months and then our life will be perfect.” She had second thoughts now. Would Sean really stand by her through all of it?“You’re already a strong witch. Why do you need another witch’s power?”Dezrael was getting irritated now. “Because power is everything!”Sean

Sean glanced down at Saga and his eyes softened. Dezi watched him as his face transformed and she realized that he loved the baby, more than he loved her. She didn’t like it and if Sean thought he could change her mind, she’d show him what she was capable of.“If I’m not stronger than they are, they can take it from me. You know how covens work, the strongest witch rules. Would you rather have us live a normal life like humans?” The look on her face told him that was the last thing she wanted.“Why not? What’s wrong with being a normal couple with a baby running around in the house and just living our lives?”Dezrael sighed audibly. “She’s not even yours! She carries his name! Why would you want someone else’s child?”“It doesn’t matter that she’s not mine, she’s yours.”“Once this spell is done, our lives will go back to normal, I promise.” Dezrael sat down next to him and took his hand. It was so easy to lie to him and that realization would’ve hit her harder if she’d not been taken

Karani had given me all the tools I’d need to succeed. The magic that now formed a part of my soul had strengthened and I could feel myself growing stronger each day. The book she’d left me had a carefully thought-out plan, a way for me to kill Dezrael without dying.“You have to be careful with the spell I will reveal to you. It will enable you to kill a witch without killing yourself. The Norns showed me a woman, she was cutting out the liver of her baby, later to be revealed, your baby. She performed the spell unsuccessfully and she went into a Seidr trance and saw your first child. In the realms of Vanaheim, I will have no power to use, and I’ll be unable to stop her. She took my magic through your first-born and then drained your life force from you.”I had read that part so many times that it was burned into my memory. I had used the moon for illumination and had pulled on her powers instead of candles. For fire I had used the green fire that I conjured up in my hand. I found th

“Hi.” I gave her my best smile and relaxed my posture. “My car broke down just around the corner and you’re the first person to open the door.”I was playing a game, her game. She had no idea that I knew everything and I wanted to keep it that way for as long as I could. I had the element of surprise and in that moment I knew that I would kill her.Her mouth was open in shock, her eyes had slightly widened, but she recovered quickly when she realized that I had no idea who she was. “Hi…uhm…sorry, what do you need?”“I just need to call a tow truck or my friend to come and get me. Do you have a phone I could use?” I held my phone up that I had switched off and smiled again.Despite her earlier shock she smiled back at me. “Sure…I’ll be right back.”She started to close the door but I blocked it with my foot and pushed it open. She turned around in surprise and I grabbed her by her throat as I closed the door shut. The shock in her eyes was evident as I held her against the wall.“What

I pulled my phone from my jacket pocket and my finger hovered over Malachi’s name. I didn’t have the strength for a lecture from Jessica and if I called Malachi, she’d know and she’d come with him. I wasn’t sure if I should leave Dezrael’s body here.I didn’t really know what else to do. I didn’t even know if there was a spell for this and a surprised smile appeared on my face when I thought about it. A spell to clean up a murder site, it was almost funny. I pressed the green button and closed my eyes.“It’s Kiran…yeah, I know.” Shoran said something else I couldn’t catch and then the background noise disappeared. “Sorry, Shoran’s mom is on a trip again.”“I’m in deep shit, James.”“What’s wrong?” James’s voice was all business now.“I need help.”I gave him the address and ended the call when he said that he was on his way. I tried to think of everything I had touched and grabbed a cloth from the kitchen counter. I started wiping the doorknob on the inside and then on the outside.Ja

James didn’t say anything as he thrust the paper bag into my arms when we reached the porch and looked up and down the street. It was dark and quiet and James walked towards his Jeep and got in.He let the Jeep roll slowly down the street in neutral as I walked to my Navigator and got in. I drove behind James as he drove in circles towards Lowell Canyon Drive. He was heading to the house and I slowed down as it started raining. We drove up the bumpy dirt road and onto the smooth driveway. My heart started pounding as I saw the strange car in front of the garage. The front door was open and James and I bumped into each other trying to get through it at the same time. The man stood near the kitchen table, his hands shook lightly and I saw the knife in his hands. Adara stood in front of him, shielding Kai in his carry cot with her body. She was in her wolf form and there was blood on her chest. She was snarling at him and he held his one hand up as if surrendering.I didn’t perceive him

I kept my phone turned off and if James or Malachi phoned me, they would think Adara and I were still busy sorting through our problems. I doubted that they would call, they wanted us to work our problems out too much.“Good morning,” a young girl greeted me as I walked into the dining room and I sat down at a table. “Good morning,” I said and ordered breakfast and coffee. It was going to be a long day and I had no idea what was waiting for me. I ate breakfast and I asked for a large orange juice I could take with me.“I hope you’re here on holiday,” Bryan said as he sat down in the chair at the other end of the table.“Bryan. Why am I not even surprised?” I said as I smiled at him and we shook hands. The waitress brought two more coffees to the table as I glanced at Bryan who had to have ordered them.“How did you find me?” I asked him.“Our amulets are still linked and you brought your cloak,” he said with a smile.“Like I told you, I never leave home without it.” He chuckled as I

I put the papers back in the envelope and put them in the bottom drawer of my desk. I stood up and walked out to the kitchen where Adara stood in front of the kettle. She was just standing there and I wanted to wrap myself around her.“You should hire Norah,” I said to her and she nodded. “To live in, so that you’re not alone with them at night.” I couldn’t give her a better explanation than that. She turned around and looked at me.“Where are you going?” she asked me. She had been crying again, lately it seemed to be all she was doing. I was the cause of all her pain, all her inner turmoil and I needed to stop hurting her.“To the hotel,” I said and went upstairs. I was busy packing when she stood at the door but didn’t come in.“She looked like Sarah, didn’t she?” she asked me and I looked at her. “Madison.”“Yes,” I said and continued packing. When she’d walked into that drawing room, time had stood still and it felt like I’d been dreaming. Even her voice had sounded like Sarah’s v

“Hi, please sit down,” I said as I walked to where Adara sat on the couch and sat down next to her.“This is Madison and this is my husband, Kiran,” Adara introduced us. The girl was shy and barely looked at me, younger than us and she had probably just finished school.“Please tell us more about yourself,” Adara said to her. She wasn’t friendly but not rude either, just sort of neutral.“I’m busy doing my degree in child psychology and I really love children. I think children should learn as they play, different types of stimulation for different age brackets are very important. They should know they’re special and loved…” She continued talking but I wasn’t listening anymore. Her aura was very peculiar, this girl was shy but not by nature, she seemed confident enough when talking about what she wanted from life and her eyes lit up when she talked about children, all good aspects but something else was there, something painful. She seemed to be more on the docile side and it made me c

I parked my car in the garage and with a sigh headed inside the house. Adara planned to hold the interviews in the drawing room that she’d redecorated. It felt almost like a lifetime ago but I could still smell James and Shoran’s blood in that room.It held so many memories and even with the new flooring, furniture and bureaus in there, I couldn’t seem not to remember what had happened in there. I’d never forget that image of them both, covered in blood, lying on the floor.I walked into the room and Adara looked up briefly. Vases with fresh flowers now adorned side tables and I could see that she’d put effort into the room. Despite the room’s history, it looked inviting.“I didn’t think you would come,” she said to me.“Well, here I am,” I said and then I regretted it. It sounded very uncaring. She only nodded and walked back to the kitchen and I heard the doorbell. The first woman was here. I turned my emotions back on so I could really get a feel for these women that would look aft

James didn’t blink and I sighed. I took a deep breath because he was going to have some choice words for me after I told him everything.“Okay. It’s just a matter of time before Vincent makes his move. He messed up everything I had built up with her in one message, then had me arrested, then that bogus tribunal where we all almost died. If she’s not in my life, he won’t focus on her and he won’t hurt her,” I said to James.“I get where you’re coming from, but did you tell her that so that she at least knows it’s not her that you hate, because she thinks you despise her.”I shook my head. “I don’t despise her.”“She tried to give it time, kept doing everything for you, being there, hoping you’d see the light and forgive her,” James said.“She’s stopped doing anything for me,” I said and he smiled again.“Yeah, that one’s on me. I told her to stop being nice to you because you’re being an asshole and now you tell me that you’re not even mad at her? How are you going to make it right wit

Two weeks went by and Adara contacted references on the applicants’ resumes and made notes as she spoke to former employers. She threw out more than she kept and we were left with three. She’d done it all on her own, never once asking for my help or opinion.“Do you want to be here when I interview the nannies?” Adara asked me one morning as I came downstairs, ready to go to work. It was the first time in nine days that she’d spoken to me. I had just gotten used to her silence.“I said you could choose the nanny,” I said to her as I took my keys from the bowl. I could taste her disappointment in the air around me and I turned to look at her.“Oh wow, if that’s how interested you are…” she said and broke off mid-sentence.“Adara, do you want me to be here or not?” I asked her. I wanted her to need me, just once.“Whatever, the interviews start at three, be here, don’t be here, you’ll do whatever you want anyway,” she said and walked away from me. She didn’t seem to miss me at all and I

I could feel her withdrawing. Her aura was stronger but we’d still lost a child the previous night. It didn’t matter how far along she’d been, she’d still been pregnant and I’d still been blind to it. I should’ve noticed sooner that she wasn’t okay and done something about it.“Adara,” I said but she kept walking out of the room.I had done it, I had broken her. She had said that last part with no emotion. She had tried and I had kicked her down every time. She was finally defeated and had given in. I didn’t want her to feel like this, I didn’t want to feel like this.I went downstairs where she was busy getting bottles ready for the twins, and making coffee. I went to stand behind her and she moved away from me. I pulled her back towards me and I hugged her. She started crying again. “I’m sorry, I’m sorry for hurting you,” I said as her shoulders shook against me.“Then why are you? You wouldn’t have done what you did last night if you felt nothing,” she said as she looked at me. I l

I sat in the kitchen for hours, playing our conversation over and over in my head. She was going through something and for the first time, she didn’t want to share her concerns with me. It was my own fault though and I wanted to be mad at her. I wanted to share her concerns but she was right, it wasn’t my business anymore, except that it was, it always would be.I loved her more than I loved myself, everything about her that pissed me off now were things I loved about her. Frustration was getting the better of me because patience was not a virtue I had. I wanted Vincent dead but he was stubbornly staying away.Upstairs, I stopped in front of the nursery and checked on Kai and Saga. They always seemed so at peace when they were asleep, that also calmed me. I breathed in their baby scent and headed to my own bedroom to sleep.I woke up with a start, my heart beating wildly and I tasted bile in my mouth. I ran to the bathroom and threw up as everything came up. The last time this had hap

Malachi’s gaze didn’t shift away from me and I could feel his emotions so intensely. I didn’t even need to focus on it anymore, it came so naturally that it should’ve scared me. My powers were growing but I couldn’t even find the joy in it, not with my life falling apart.“Jessica and I sorted it out, I’m sure you can, too. Don’t always just listen with your head, sometimes your heart can be right too,” he said and stood up.“I know, Dad,” I said to him.“You should get a sitter for the wedding, we’re having an open bar,” Malachi said and walked out, closing the door behind him softly. The silence felt almost unbearable and I couldn’t tell him any of it.My phone pinged and I picked it up. I was still lost in thought about everything he’d said. Adara and I weren’t even talking so I had no idea how we’d get through a whole wedding being close together. I opened her text and looked at it.Adara – Could we discuss hiring a nanny for the kids?Kiran – Why?Adara – I need to re-open my sho
