I pushed the emails from John to the back of my mind, but it kept creeping up on me and I knew that at some point I’d have to make an effort to squash this thing before it became bigger. We hadn’t done anything wrong and I believed Malika when she said she never signed allegiance to Vincent.

I sat down at my desk and opened the laptop. I only had one day left to answer John Whitcombe. I didn’t really have the diplomacy that Malachi had and I acted on my emotions much more than he did. It wasn’t necessarily a good thing, making emotional decisions often led to more trouble.

I thought about how to correctly get my message across without being too forward about it. I hit the reply button on John’s email and started typing.

“To Head Alpha John Whitcombe,

I regret to inform you that Malika Luximon is not being harbored by me, unlawful or not, or the pack of Southern Alaska. Vincent Pierre is an idiotic, blubbering …”

I laughed suddenly and hit the delete button. I couldn’t send that to Joh

I was furious as I sat there behind my desk. Did the African Council not investigate my statement at all? Why was there no mention of that? John was right about one thing, I had approved the wedding and I wouldn’t be able to lie about it. John himself was a truth seeker and he would only have to ask me once to know what I did.I didn’t care much about the consequences at that point. I was too enraged and now I was more determined than ever to end this thing without having to send Malika back to Mauritius.I looked at my watch and typed my reply to him. Why waste the time when I knew that I wouldn’t change my mind? No matter how much I thought about it, I wouldn’t do it.“Dear John,I will not send Malika back to Mauritius. She is a free human, to go and do as she pleases. She also doesn’t want to return to Mauritius. If Vincent Pierre wants her so badly, he can come and get her himself, but he will have me to deal with if he sets foot in my territory and that goes for any other wolf t

James and I stood outside, near the front door of the den. I had called another pack meeting so we could discuss and vote on the Mauritius situation. I had learned early on in my life that if I wanted to keep the pack’s respect, I needed to be honest with them.Robert was angry because I had denied him access to the meeting. Although we considered him family, he wasn’t a wolf. I wasn’t about to change hundreds of years of tradition just because I liked him.More cars pulled into the space in front of the den and I greeted my pack members warmly. Malachi was the last to arrive, smiling to himself as he walked towards us. ‘Only Jessica can be responsible for that smile,’ I thought to myself as Malachi grinned at me.I closed the den’s door behind me as the rest found seats. I walked to the front with James trailing behind me and hit the gavel once on the table behind me. “This meeting is now called to order.”The men settled down with low whispers as I leaned back against the table and

Malachi watched me but made no move to meet me halfway. His face was void of emotion and I had a hard time reading his aura. I pushed harder against the mental wall and his aura appeared and his guilt showed.“Sorry, I know you wanted to discuss this but I kind of had my hands full,” he said to me and I smiled. “It’s okay,” I replied.“But you did well on your own, there’s nothing I would have done differently,” he said to me and slapped me on the back.I was about to say something more but kept quiet as our pack members started leaving the den and shook our hands. Carl and Frank stopped in front of us and I smiled. I knew Carl’s mind was working overtime already.“If it comes to it, we go with you and we kill Vincent.”Frank nodded his head. “And whoever else we need to.”“Yeah. You’re not going down for this shit, Kiran,” Carl said.“It’ll be fine. Vincent has to prove his claims and a truth seeker will know, so I doubt there’ll be a tribunal.”Carl smiled and slapped me on the bac

I raced down Lowell Canyon Drive with Malachi next to me and Carl in the backseat. I skidded around the corner and raced towards Robert’s house.“Whoa, slow down, Kiran!” Carl said from the back seat and I slowed as I got to Robert’s driveway and parked the Navigator in the street. We got out and Robert opened the door just as I wanted to open the door myself.“You brought Malachi and Carl?” He asked me and I shrugged.“Of course, the more the merrier,” Carl answered before I could say anything. He led us inside and to the two bodies in the living room.“Turn them over,” I said to Carl and he bent down next to the first one. He turned the first man over and I lifted his shirt. I instantly recognized his tattoo.“Zetas,” Malachi said as I lifted the second man’s shirt.“Robert, this was self-defense,” I said to him and he nodded as if I had asked. Robert didn’t have a mean hair on his head.“Tell me what happened,” I said as Malachi searched the first man and opened his wallet. Carl wa

We got the body parts loaded in the bags and we’d washed the floor, just in case. Frank and Carl had gone outside to make a fire to burn the carpet. We watched it burn in silence while Carl and Frank drank another three beers each. My phone beeped and I checked my messages. It was Robert. Robert: Thanks, I’m fine now. I put my phone away as Frank threw water on the fire.We all got into my car and drove towards the Bay when Carl grabbed me by the shoulders from behind. “How many bodies have you added to the Bay since Malachi’s wild days?” He asked me and I looked at him in the rear-view mirror.“Four, why?” I asked him. He was an odd character, a special kind of special, like Jessica would say.“Because you never asked where to go to dump them,” Frank answered and laughed. I smiled briefly and shook my head. I parked the Navigator and then reversed as close as I could. I opened the trunk with the remote and we started dumping the bags into the icy waters below. There was a storm bre

I took out my phone and made my second mistake for the day. I called Jessica, I was worried what Malachi might have done to her. The last time Malachi lost his mind hadn’t ended so well and I had to dump a body in the Bay. Her phone rang and rang but then she answered just as I was about to disconnect and drive to her house.“Hey, Superstar,” she answered and sounded like herself.“Are you okay?” I asked her, my voice sounding loud even to myself.“Of course, why wouldn’t I be?” She answered. I turned around and Adara looked at me, I closed my eyes briefly as her anger flared up again and I could taste the bitterness as she went upstairs. I couldn’t worry about that now, but knowing that Jessica was unharmed calmed a bit.“Did you see Malachi this morning?” I asked her.“Sort of, what’s going on? I woke up and heard him downstairs, but when I got to the kitchen he just left and my kitchen was sort of ruined and when I asked him if he was okay he completely ignored me and walked out. I

Jessica closed her eyes as I showed her the photo. Somebody was deliberately trying to cause havoc in our lives. Kudos to them because it was working. My wife and my father both hated me and it was the one time that I was actually innocent.“Somehow we just have to get Malachi to listen. If he can just read both our minds, he’ll see that we’ve never slept together,” I said to Jessica and she bit her lower lip.“That’s not technically true,” she said to me and now I was confused.“What do you mean technically? Either we did or we didn’t, and we didn’t!” I said to her as I ran my hands over my face and sat back.“We did. It was right after you dumped Sarah, when we first became friends. You came over one night, already half drunk, we got really wasted and not just alcohol. We smoked something too and the next minute we were naked in my room and it was awful,” she said to me.I felt the world spinning around me and the force of her words slammed into me. Malachi drove away from the den and glanced in his rearview mirror and looked at Kiran one last time before the road curved and he settled his eyes on the road in front of him. It was still early and he smiled as he thought about sliding into bed next to Jessica.Malachi parked his Navigator in the garage and closed the doors. The side door was open as usual and he briefly closed his eyes as he locked it behind him. Her scent beckoned to him as he took the stairs two at a time.He grinned as he undressed. Jessica was on her stomach, splayed out over the whole bed with his pillow tucked under one arm. He wasn’t a small man but even he didn’t take up half the space on a bed that Jessica did and she was small compared to him.“Jess,” he whispered as he slid in behind her.Her legs curled up and Malachi shifted her to her side of the bed and tucked himself around her. Her hand gripped his and he smiled as he closed his eyes. This was home. That thought had his eyes snap open and thinking

Malachi took the file from Vaughn’s desk and followed Chief Johnson outside to the parking lot. Ten minutes later, Malachi walked inside the police station and was shown to the interrogation room where Kiran was being held.Malachi watched from the other side of the two-way mirror for a few minutes as they questioned Kiran relentlessly before opening the door and walking into the interrogation room. The relief in Kiran’s eyes almost had him break his resolve and he had a deep urge to hug his son and assure him that everything would be alright.“Who the hell are you?” One detective asked Malachi as he placed his briefcase on the table.“Good evening, detectives. My name is Malachi Sinclair, legal representation for and on behalf of Kiran Sinclair. My client has cooperated fully during your interview and I call it an interview since you’ve failed to present him with a warrant of arrest or a complaint form and even though you haven’t arrested him legally yet, you’ve already processed him

Malachi wallowed in his self-pity that whole day, drinking and drowning in his own misery. He kept replaying everything over in his head, every conversation he’d ever had with Jessica, every interaction between her and Kiran. He punished himself with memories of every touch and kiss between them. He replayed every conversation between Kiran and Jessica too. She’d warned him before the time. She’d told him she’d slept with Kiran, and he’d foolishly believed her story about him being like a brother to her.He was driving himself to the brink of madness but he couldn’t help it. He needed to know how and when it had happened. He needed to know how he’d missed it. Betrayal was the worst thing anyone could ever do to him.Betrayal was his downfall, as was his anger and temper. It was the balance Karani had spoken about, but there was no balance to this. How did he keep his anger and resentment at bay? He didn’t think he’d ever get over this. The next day Malachi was driving to the liquor st

I had been in a similar room in Seward when I gave my statement after Sarah’s suicide but this time it was quite different. They took the handcuffs off and asked me if I wanted anything to drink. I declined the offer. I had no idea how long I’d be there but I knew they were going to question me extensively.I hoped I wouldn’t be there for long. James would be on his way to the Sterling Police Station and hopefully Malachi would be with him. I had no idea where he was or if he even listened to his messages. Would he even come back to help me after everything that he believed happened?“I’m going to put the camera on and record our interview. We will also now read you your Miranda rights. Do you understand?” Kyle asked me and I nodded.“You have the right to remain silent, anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law, you have the right to an attorney, if you cannot afford an attorney, one will be appointed for you. James arrived at the hotel at 9 a.m. By that time, I had already had most of the employees in my office to catch up on any problems that they might have. They were all happy with James and I was glad to hear that. He stepped into my office and sat down on the chair in front of my desk. I looked up and he was worried. His aura seemed stifled and concerned. He looked agitated and his eyes looked weary, like he hadn’t gotten any sleep. I knew he was worried about the situation with Adara and Malachi, I was too.“What’s on your mind?” I was reading through the budget forecast for the next six months.“Adara’s talking about divorce.” The pen slipped from my hand onto my desk.“What?” The phone on my desk rang and I picked it up. “What?” I asked irritably.“I’m sorry to disturb you, Sir, there are two police officers downstairs to see you,” Sylvie said.“Bring them up, please, Sylvie. Thank you.” I put the receiver down and looked at James.“Cops? What for?” James asked. Mention of Adara an

I changed Saga’s diaper, took them downstairs and placed them in their carry cots. I got their playmats and put them on the floor so they could entertain themselves for a bit. I looked around. Adara hadn’t bothered to clean the mess Malachi and I had made.I carried the broken chairs to the garage and cleaned the kitchen and dining area, washing the blood from the wall and floor. I washed the dishes and sat down at the counter looking down as they watched the animals dangling above them.“I’m so glad you two are still small enough not to also fight with me,” I said to them and Kai turned his head to look at me.He rolled over onto his stomach and lifted his head to look at me. I hid my face behind my hands and played peek-a-boo with him. He laughed at me and Saga started to laugh as Kai laughed. It was the most beautiful sound I had heard all day, perhaps even all week, and I laughed with them. I quickly ran upstairs and put my shoes on and grabbed the twin carrier bag from their roo

The frustration I felt barely compared to the anger surging inside me. I couldn’t comprehend how they’d believe these lies. My jaw clenched tightly as I drove away from Malachi’s office. I couldn’t lose my father and he couldn’t lose Jessica.I drove home and saw James’ car in the driveway. He opened the front door as I walked towards it. He looked at me and shook his head. Disappointment radiated from him and it pissed me off.“Not you too.” His expression changed and he chuckled.“She’s going to kill me for letting you in, she had the locks changed. What the hell, man?” I wasn’t even shocked to learn that Adara had the locks changed but it felt extreme to me, everything did.“You really think I’m that stupid? It’s Vincent messing with me because I refused to send Malika back.”“I know you didn’t do this, you like that crazy person in there too much,” James said as I walked into the kitchen. I could almost taste the hostility in the air as Shoran and Adara both glared at me.“What ar

Malachi went for Kiran and in his mind he could still hear him laughing. Malachi was on top of him as they fell to the floor, hitting him wildly as Kiran brought his arms up to protect his face. He could still smell Jessica's scent on himself but in his mind it was Kiran that smelled like her.“Malachi!” Kiran’s scream didn’t penetrate. He could hear Kiran’s heart slow down as he choked the life out of him and suddenly he was on the floor holding his head and screaming in pain. Malachi registered Kiran’s coughing next to him as he tried to breath and then the pain was just gone.Malachi stood up from the floor and he couldn’t believe that he had just done that. It was like all the fight had left him in an instant. He stalked up the stairs as he blinked the tears away, tears of anger and regret at having almost killed his own son.Malachi washed the blood from his hands and face and threw clothes into a duffel bag. He couldn’t be in that house anymore as more memories flooded him, memo
