"Do you want us to take care of the cops boss?"

Vlad remained silent for a moment, contemplating his next move, before answering Boris' question. It would be safer to have the woman detective killed, rather than let her continue on her current path. He had been somewhat curious about the cop that had been sniffing around his business for months. She hadn't posed a real threat before now, thus he had mostly ignored her investigation. He sensed in her an inherent goodness, which combined with the stubbornness of a bloodhound, would eventually lead her to the truth about him. Ordinarily he would offer a bribe at this point or find some blackmail material on the person that was annoying him. He knew with the certainty of a man well used to judging people at a single glance that neither would work on McKinley. She would be as her appearance suggested, untouchable. He pictured the slight curl of her beautiful lips at the suggestion of a bribe.

That left the only other option he would normally consider, dispose of the problem. But the image of her small, curvy body posed lifelessly didn't sit well with him. He was not known for his finer emotions, except where his sister was concerned, but Vlad was not surprised that he didn't want Detective McKinley dead. Something about the woman had called to him from the moment he felt her eyes on him through the one-way glass. He would have to find a creative solution to the problem she currently posed, one that would free him to pursue this intense lust he felt for the gorgeous cop.

"I will take care of the woman, Boris." Vlad relaxed into the back seat of the luxury SUV and let his eyes wander to the passing city streets. His streets. "You take care of the other."

"Of course."

Boris did not point out that it was highly unusual for the boss to get his hands dirty with the police, even if he was thinking it. The less contact Vlad had with law enforcement the better. But he would not to speak out of turn. He rather enjoyed keeping his tongue in his mouth. And though Sitnikov didn't often get his hands dirty these days, Boris knew better than to think the boss had gotten rusty. Dennis Yankovich would have attested to that if he still had a tongue to tell tales with.

"No blood. Understood?" Vlad said sharply. "It will not do to go to war with them."

"Understood boss."

Vlad cracked his knuckles and contemplated the hidden curves of the policewoman underneath her shapeless clothes. One day soon those curves would be revealed to him. His deadly eyes flickered as he thought of all the ways he could bring that stubborn spirit of hers to heel. He hoped that she would fight him, it would make the chase more interesting. Perhaps he would visit her again, make sure he wasn't imagining the intense attraction that had sizzled between them in the dimly lit interrogation room.

"We have a message from Russia," Boris grumbled from the front seat.

Vlad's sharp mind instantly switched gears. Business had been good for him in America. The Bratva rarely interfered. "What is it?"

"Petrov sends his regards," Boris replied, his voice tense. Vlad didn't speak, knowing there would be more. "And he will send his youngest son to ensure the friendship is strong. He wishes you to host the boy in your city."

Vlad tensed. Petrov had been his mentor and later, when Vlad had outgrown his role as deadly enforcer to the mobster, his business rival and friend. Why would he send his spawn to a city that belonged to Sitnikov? It seemed foolish, yet somehow calculated. "When does he arrive?"

"He will arrive after the New Year."

Vlad had a few months to discover what Petrov wanted in his city before deciding if he would take the young man under his wing or mail him back to his homeland in pieces.

Jane unlocked the door to her apartment and disabled the alarm system. She tossed her keys on the kitchen island and reached for an open bottle of wine. She poured herself a healthy dose of the rich, red liquid and sipped it as she made her way to the back of her small living space. She discarded clothes as she went until she stood in only her bra and panties. She barely glanced at her compact body as she passed the full-length mirror on the back of her closet door. She stripped off her underwear as she turned the shower on. She took another healthy sip of wine before unclipping her bra and letting it fall to the floor. Stepping into the hot shower, she moaned at the feel of the spray on her skin. Showering was cleansing. It washed away the stress, the sadness and the death of her job. She closed her eyes and let the water soothe her.Today the pounding heat of the water hitting her skin wasn't working the way it usually did. She couldn't forget the black eyes that hunted her in the

Jane sat frozen in her chair caught between laughter at the absurdity of his proposition, and terror. "That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard. You would let a cop get that close to you? Just to scratch an itch? You like to live dangerously, don't you, Sitnikov? Sure, yeah, let's do it. Can we go back to your place now? Can I have the code to your safe before we get down?"His lips curled in a quasi smile at her sarcasm. "No, I would not allow a police detective access to my private life," he said calmly.Jane frowned. "I don't understand. Supposedly you want to have a fling with me, a detective, but you don't plan on letting law enforcement near you. I'm not sure how long it's been for you, but usually that kind of intimacy requires a physical presence. Not that I'm even remotely entertaining the idea of any kind of relationship with you. Not happening, Russian." She spat the last word.He didn't seem to enjoy the way she spoke to him. His body was rigid in the seat and he seeme

Jane touched the door of the coffee shop, hesitating with uncharacteristic uncertainty. She despised the feeling. Jane always knew what she was about. She charged through life head-first and made no apologies. She hated the idea that Sitnokov had her emotions so twisted up that she was now doubting herself. Since when did she hesitate while in pursuit of a potential collar?Yet, as she watched the small, dark-haired woman on the other side of the glass, she found herself trying to find her usual courage. Her next move could prove extremely deadly. Jane was technically off duty. One of her confidential informants had let her know that the girl she was looking for was on the move. Which lead her to the Knight's Out coffee shop.Taking a deep breath, she opened the door and strode in. She was met with a cacophony of noise. Some kind of board game being played by several customers seemed to be getting out of hand. A blond waitress was tearing them a new one, using language that was colou

Jane grinned down at her phone, reading through a text promising her some badly needed information. It had been three long weeks since Sitnikov's visit to her apartment and she hadn't been able to find any more leads in her murder case. She had searched tirelessly through boxes of evidence to come up empty every time. She had returned to Yankovich's apartment and gone over it again with a fine tooth comb, which yielded nothing more than the original search. Sitnikov was better than even she had believed, and she was looking at him harder than anyone else in the force. Like any other crime that seemed to link back to the Russian, all the evidence slid off of him like oil on leather. She'd been ready to break with protocol and drag the man back in for another interview when one of her confidential informants had finally come through for her. Jane dropped her phone in her purse and forced back a shout of triumph. Her abysmal luck on the Sitnikov case was about to change. She wanted the

Jane's heart sped into overtime as they approached the gated mansion located in an exclusive sprawling community on the edge of the city. She tried hard to retain her composure, but it was difficult. She was excited and afraid. She'd been investigating Sitnikov for so long now she was used to thinking about him day and night. During the day she worked on finding evidence of his many crimes. At night she remembered the way he had threatened her when he had come to her apartment. How he had forced her body against his and exposed her breasts to his predatory gaze. She couldn't think of him without picturing his hard body pressed against her. She looked across the unmarked cruiser at her partner. She was impressed that he'd finally stepped up in their investigation. After she had told him about her conversation with Desiree and the search warrant she was able to achieve he'd taken it upon himself to organize a unit to search the Sitnikov property with them. They had to move quickly on

Fired.Jane sat slumped in her car, her cold face pressed against the steering wheel, her hands gripping the hard plastic on either side of her head. She felt broken. Like she couldn't sit up properly and breath. She could only lay against the steering wheel of her car, motionless, outside of her former place of employment where moments before she had been forced to give up her gun and her badge. In a humiliating meeting she'd been called into the department head's office and made to explain her relentless pursuit of an upstanding citizen that led to his complaining to her superiors and threatening to withdraw funding from vital city projects. According to Jane's boss, Vladimir Sitnikov's lawyer had demanded the person responsible for dragging Sitnikov through the mud be held accountable. Of course, she knew it was by his order, not the lawyer's.A sob escaped her lips and she shook her head in despair. She had always been a cop. Right from the moment she turned eighteen and could e

The fire escape offered little coverage from the elements. Jane sat fantasizing about a certain mob boss' bloody demise in graphic detail while shivering in wet misery. She was doing her part in what amounted to one of the few jobs she could get with her shiny new PI badge. She was helping a local bond enforcement agent, Mack Hudson, track and take down a man that had jumped his bail a week prior. This one was known to be particularly dangerous, which is why Hudson had asked for her assistance. Apprehending criminals is what she was good at. If she couldn't do it as a police detective then she would do it as a private investigator. The wet misery wasn't helped by her choice of attire. When Jane was forced to give up her uniform she embraced the somewhat gothic style she had always favoured as a teen in an attempt to rebel against her strict upbringing. These days she tended to wear dark, biker-like clothes with her black hair cut severely to her shoulders with straight bangs. She'd e

Jane held onto the railing in a death grip, her body slamming unmercifully into the side of the metal fire escape. The rain made the metal slippery, she was forced to drop her weapon in favour of gaining a better more life-saving hold. Her taser fell thirty feet to the ground below. She feared her assailant might try to force her over the rest of the way, but he was too busy yanking himself up and then hurtling toward the stairs. He completely ignored her dangling body. She was grateful, but also slightly peeved that he hadn't offered her a helping hand. She was definitely going to tase the shit out of this guy when she got safely out of her current situation."Jane, where is he, he didn't come to the door. Should I take it down?" Hudson's voice sounded in her ear. She levered her body down, crawling carefully through the gaps in the railing until she was laying panting on the metal grate once more. She took two deep lung full's of precious air before rolling over and pushing to her

Vlad looked down at his wife while she worked quietly. She sat crosslegged on the floor on top of his expensive rug in front of the roaring fire she had insisted he light for her. He'd demanded a kiss in return for the favour. When she had laughingly refused, he had, like the thief he was, stolen it from her and then proceeded to steal so much more. It amazed him yet, this intense feeling he felt for his wife. He knew it was love, yet he couldn't bring himself to say it. What he felt went beyond the calf-like love he witnessed in others. He had wanted to possess Jane in a way that would bind her to him for eternity. Even now, he felt anxious that she wasn't as much his as she should be. He could make men bleed without thinking twice. He took anything and everything he wanted, leaving destruction behind him if he encountered resistance. Yet Jane had defied him on numerous occasions and he could do nothing but claim her again and again. She was a strong woman, not to be broken easily

She's still alive, Vlad told himself over and over again as he sat waiting for Petrov to appear. They wouldn't murder the only leverage they have over you. They need us both alive.Intellectually, Vlad knew his words were true. But inside, his thoughts were black and murky with rage. He couldn't erase the vision of Petrov grabbing Jane from behind and lifting her off her feet. She had screamed Vlad's name and reached for him. He had been helpless to get to his woman while she was afraid and suffering.Vlad contented himself with imagining every way in which he could torture Petrov while still keeping him alive. He wanted Petrov to understand, to truly understand the colossal mistake he'd made in touching Jane. Vlad had been willing, for friendship's sake, to let the boy leave the city unharmed, though it might weaken him in the eyes of the organization. Instead of accepting his generous offer, Petrov had declared war.The enforcer had sacrificed his life the moment he moved against

King took her hand in a firm grip. When Jane winced involuntarily, he frowned, gripped her wrist and pulled her closer when she tried to pull away. Jane glanced back at Boris. When he didn't react with murder and mayhem, she allowed Tyson King to turn her hand over in his and examine the palm. He gently touched the grazes where glass had pierced the skin. King dropped her hand. "It's a pleasure to finally meet you, Mrs. Sitnikov. I've heard about you and have been eager to make your acquaintance."Somehow, Jane didn't find that comforting. Especially not when King indicated the man standing to his right. "Daniel Mercer is head of my security. He'll be working with you on getting your husband back."Jane was about to protest any interference when she got a good look at King's head of security. There was no way to describe his eyes except dead as they calmly took in every detail of her and Boris' appearance. His face was hard as rock. Even the sexy waves of sandy brown hair and trimm

"Jane, come to me, pchelka!" she looked around and saw Boris reaching for her, his large arm thrust under the car.She reached out and put her hand in his, trusting him completely. His hand immediately engulfed hers and with a grunt of pain he pulled her bodily from under the car. Jane winced as her sweater rode up and the bare skin of her side scraped across the pavement. She bit her lip to keep from crying out. She suspected Boris was shot and he was still trying to help her. If he could suck it up then so could she.Boris pulled her into a sitting position next to him. His other hand was pressed tightly to his shoulder where blood was seeping from between his fingers. They heard the screech of tires. Jane tried to crawl up the car to look over the hood. "My ass hurts, asshole," Jane said grumpily the next morning while Vlad led her to their car. "I can't believe you lied to me."Vlad shrugged his shoulders, supremely unconcerned with her discomfort as her sore ass came into contact with the plush leather seat of his Bentley and her breath rushed out in a pained hiss. "You lied to me first when you ignored your promise to release me. Besides I merely said I would not beat you. I consider that light spanking as foreplay to our second round of lovemaking last night. Admit it, you enjoyed it just a little."Jane glared at him, put her sunglasses on and stared steadily out the opposite window from where he sat. He laughed huskily and reached around her to draw a seatbelt over her chest and hips. Once she was safely buckled in, he did the same for himself. Despite her objections Jane had enjoyed the way her husband had taken her forcefully after relieving his anger on her rounded derriere. Something about the combination of pain and pleas

Vlad didn't give any outward impression of annoyance, but Jane felt the subtle shift in his body as he moved her slightly back, away from the other man whose sharp eyes were taking the pair in."It seems that I must congratulate you on the recent occasion of your marriage, Mrs Sitnikov," the man drawled, his cold blue eyes sliding from Vlad to Jane. "I was sorry to have missed the invitation."Jane didn't like his tone of voice. He seemed insolent, something she hadn't experienced in any of Vlad's men thus far. "If you know my husband at all," she replied, her brown eyes just as cold, "then you know he acts quickly when he wants something and doesn't require the approval of others."The emphasis she put on the word others left no doubt that she meant 'subordinates'. Jane rolled over in her bed and tried to get comfortable underneath the layers of homemade quilts. Where once she would have hated the thought of everything in the room and house, now she found the familiarity comforting. Even the creak of bedsprings took her back to her childhood spent in that same room. Oddly, visiting her family seemed to ease the worries she had struggled with all of her life. She had resented her family and the lifestyle they led. Now, coming home, she saw everything in a different light. It wasn't for her, but she didn't hate everything Amish anymore. Especially now that they seem to be in favour of indoor plumbing. She missed Vlad. More than she thought possible. More than she had ever missed anything, ever. This was her third night away from him. And she was done. She wouldn't spend one more night out of the arms of her husband. Their marriage may have been forced on her, but she found now that she badly wanted it.
