Halsey ~ Now or Never.

I'd really love to see your comments.

The moment the dining hall doors closed behind me, Ghost appeared by my side. Just like her name implies, stealthily and fast. Her birth name is Tiana, she's been by my side since I was born, so I was told. It was said that my dad hid her mother in the estate away from an underground gang while she was still in the womb.

Rumors say they were secret lovers but whatever it was they had. He protected Tiana's mother even after her mother's death, he took her in as one of his own. Thus, she became my elder sister.

Tiana earned the name Ghost because of her network and coding skills, a very good hacker. One of the best we've owned in the mafia.

She can breach any high-tech security without being noticed and when it comes to combat skills, she's just the same, stealthy and fast. She'd kill in a blink of an eye and so she was also the best personal bodyguard I could ever wish for alongside Butcher. A job she had Personally requested from my father as an act of repaying his kindness.

We walk side by side to the elevator as she feeds me the information I've been yearning to get since the unexpected visit of Mr. Dimitri.

We got into the elevator and she pressed in my floor number.

She hands me a clear file and I instantly begin to brief through it, whilst listening to her speak.

"If we're both thinking the same thing then yes, he is the man your Father spoke about. Papa doesn't trust easily but for him to trust his beloved daughter to a dangerous frenemy makes me wonder if there is something your father wants you to know" She rushed out her hypothesis. Always straight to the point. I shook my head slowly, still going through the documents.

"His father and your father were really close" She added, taking her hair out from the bun and hand brushing it back over her shoulders.

My eyebrows raised at her last statement.

"close?" My father wasn't "close" to anyone that wasn't his wife and daughter. He always kept to himself. A trait I got from him.

"Hmm," Tiana nodded in affirmation to what she said earlier.

"It is true that the Russians don't partner or socialize with other mafias but Alexi Dimitri and your father were close since childhood. They both spent their teenage years in Russian prison" Her silvery voice blends with the night breeze as she speaks.

I nod my head slowly, still briefing through the file. The last page was filled with pins on images of my dad with another man who shares a close resemblance with Rolan.  They both had sincere smiles on their hardened faces.

A pained smile slowly crept its way to my lips at the same time sight of my father's smile. Papa always smiled with his eyes, they'd glisten and his ears would perk upward.

Yeah, he was close with Rolan's Father.

I closed the file and handed it back to Tiana. Papa had always wanted what was best for me. I really don't mind a fixed marriage but what does Rolan get from this union?

"It says here in his file that he was married," My shoulders rolled in rotation. "What happened?"

"She was murdered. Cut into pieces and sent to Rolan in a packaged box on his birthday"

My expression flattered, and my chest tightened in pain. Someone he cares about had been taken away from him just like how papa had been taken away from me. We've both lost something very precious. I looked at Tiana. Her chestnut brown eyes met my jade green ones.

Our eyes spoke for us.

"The Irish were responsible for her death"

I squinted my eyes, she smiled coyly.

"What do you think dissolved the Irish mafia to nothing?"

I raised my left brow.

"He destroyed the mafia slowly and painfully, taking down their establishments and revenues. Took away a special person from each of the people involved in his wife's death. Sealed the Boss and underboss in an iron coffin alive and threw them in the Antarctic ocean " She answered her question vacantly.

Both my eyebrows raised and my head tilted to the side. He must have loved his wife so much to take down a whole empire as an act of vengeance.

Now I'm curious to know more about Rolan Niklavo Dimitri.

The elevator stopped and we walked into my office. It was my dad's before he died but now it's mine.

The lights turned on automatically and brightened the place. The only thing I changed in this office is the mini library I had built in it.

I was a lover of books before I became boss, I still love them but I hardly have time to read anything that isn't related to the mafia business.

Tiana made herself comfortable on my plush Grey leather loveseat. While I sat on my desk with my feet crossed and my arms folded.

I stared at the "the lady in gold" painting by Gustav Klimt. A gift my uncle gave me to decorate the office.

"What's the plan?" I asked, my voice above a whisper.

"What do you want to do?"

"To avenge papa"

"Then you know what to do" we locked gazes. Her eyes held a promise.

A promise to stay by side and avenge papa's death. He wasn't just a boss to her, he was also a father to her.

There is just one problem.

"Your Mother"

"Mother" we blurted out at the same time.

Mirth played on her lips, teasing me.

My head fell back and I let out a frustrated groan.

I wondered how she'll take it. What if she knows about it? She'd gladly agree to marry me off to a total stranger. Any means to get me out of her life.

Thinking of her no longer makes my heart ache. I've gotten over it, over the years, as the Boss of the Italian, you have to have a cold heart and a strong mind.

It didn't take me long to possess those attributes.

My life is about to take an interesting twist.

"I went into the kitchen and made one of my favorite tea recipes, Creamy vanilla flavored peach ice tea. Taught your chef something new today, he should pay me." Mrs. Dimitri makes me smile again when I see her holding two plastic cups with dome lids filled with a foamy peak creamy orange-colored iced tea."I knew it would make you smile." She hands me a cup, and I take it, uttering a small thank you. The cold drink somehow makes me feel better about the drive. Costa, our driver, leads us to the Lexus where we take our seats at the back and settle. She watches me with eager eyes as I place the straw between my lips and take a long sip of my drink. My eyes close involuntarily; the heavenly taste commands them to do so. The sweet peach flavor bursts on my tongue, mixed with the vanilla ... I can't help but hum in approval at the taste.I pull the straw away. "It is divine." I moan before slipping the straw back in and enjoying the rest of it."I'm glad you love it. There is more where i

"Tutto avrà senso nel tempo. Farò ancora le mie solite visite, anche se i primi mesi dopo il matrimonio saranno difficili, ma ce la faremo. Sono il momento principale, incontro mia suocera, la signora Dimitri." ("It will all make sense in time. I will still make my usual visits, although the first few months after the wedding will be hard, but we'll get through it. In the meantime, meet my mother-in-law, Mrs. Dimitri.")I go to hug his right hand tightly so he can get the hint, and he does. His eyes widen in surprise, then in panic. He laughs nervously as he stretches out his hand for a shake."I'm Charles, nice to meet you." I sigh. At least his English is getting better."You do a good job here. I've never been to a winery before; it looks great." Mrs. Dimitri praises him while shaking his outstretched hand.A small blush takes over Charles' face as he thinks of what to say back to her in English. I immediately turn him away. "Please forgive him; he's flustered, and his English stil

I start the engine and drive outside of the garage, down the lane to the ranch. The sun shines on the smooth green pastures where the cows are out and scattered, chewing on the grasses without a care in the world, surrounded by white wooden gates of medium height. A worker is right at the left corner of the field; he spots me and waves with his hat. I do the same as I drive by.“This looks beautiful. I must say I'm surprised,” Mrs. Dimitri looks amazed by the view in front of her. “You manage the whole ranch?”“I have help. It's not easy running the mafia and a ranch,” I say as I take a turn to the right, heading up the hill toward the stables. It's beginning to get hot, and I hope it won't be a problem for Mrs. Dimitri.“No, it's not, but you're doing a good job, dearie,” she cooes. I feel her gaze on me, but I don't divert my eyes away from the road. “Will you be able to leave this behind?” Another feeling of déjà vu washes through me again. My lips tug upwards; she notices. “Did I

“So it's okay when you're grumpy and wicked at any time of the day, but when I do it, it's wrong?” Her eyebrows and nose scrunch. She looks offended.I run my hands through my messy hair and scoot back on my bed till my back touches the headboard. “First of all, I didn't say it was wrong. I said it was too early, and of course, the same does not apply to me because I'm the boss.” My arms fold underneath my bosom, and I shrug with a smug look on my face. For some reason, getting on Tiana’s nerves makes me feel good this morning. She raises her fist as if to punch me, but I immediately raise my hands high in surrender. “Just joking. What has your knickers in a twist?”She huffs again. I eye her outfit. Did she sleep in her suit, or did she dress up before coming to my room? But it's very early, and her clothes look ruffled. It's either she slept in it or she didn't sleep at all. Poor thing.“Your board members are so slow!”“Too much caffeine does that to one. And I've been overworking

"She likes gardening. She also likes to read but had to put a stop to that when it began to strain her eyes. She loves animals and will definitely love to hear how you've been managing the ranch after your father passed. Mother is not as energetic as she should be. She won't take up most of your time; she only wants to bond with someone who's about to be a member of her family, no need to be nervous. As long as you don't treat her like a patient… you both are good to go."I'm tongue-tied and unprepared. I totally wasn't expecting him to try and help me out. If all he said is true, then having a conversation won't be so bad. I did tell him my problem, and just like he promised, he helped find a solution for me. Maybe this marriage thing is going to work. I find myself smiling like a fool; my face brightens up, and I immediately return to reality."If you say so, I would have no problem speaking to her then. Thanks for telling me what she likes.""And you don't necessarily have to talk

We step inside together, but I immediately excuse myself when my phone starts to ring, fortunately for me. "I will try my best to join you for dinner. Please feel at home. Martha here is available for all you need help with; I will be in my study." With that, I bow to her. When I raise my head, she's looking at me with the same intent gaze that Rolan often directs at me. Like she's studying me, with the intention of knowing everything about me and acing every test and exam about me. Just like Rolan’s stares, hers also make me uncomfortable and nervous. I don't let her study me for long as I nod at Martha and take quick steps to the elevator.“Why is my heart beating this way?” I mutter under my breath as I rub my chest where my heart lies with a little force.“You should see a doctor. He would know the answer to that,” comes a snarky response from behind me, right before I open the door to my room. My eyes widen, and my legs move before I think. The disturbance in my chest is replace
