She took the gift of her virginity from me. How dare she! I jumped from the landing at the end of the hall into my eating tower. My roar was loud; the burst of flames and smoke would incinerate anything in its path. My wings pulled me up to the parapet and out to the open sky. The moons shone bright, and I flew fast, heading for her town. Because she didn't know how many men despoiled her, I would kill them all. The crash through realms was painful. It didn't need to be, but I craved this pain, relished it.

The town slept, the lights off. I swooped in low, my wings grazing the tops of their houses, and I roared. She made me crazy. I wanted death, blood, a fight. Killing these humans would give me two of the three. With a burst of flame to their public building, it exploded. Humans poured from their homes, women screamed, children cried. I made one last pass before changing my course. Was anyone inside the burned building? A small part of me didn't want a human death on my hands. Acasia's words made it a smaller part than usual, so I refused to feel guilty.

I flew to Laryn's territory after crashing through the realm again. "Fight me, you no good motherfucker," I bellowed from above his lair.

He didn't keep me waiting. His claiming bride died recently. He covered his grief well, but I knew he burned with sadness on the inside. His roar thundered through the air, his smoke and fire close behind.

"You dare enter my territory without invite. I will kill you, Bastian."

"You will try, you lily livered blue bastard." I expected the impact, needed more pain. Something to take the ache from my heart.

Our clash knocked me back, spinning us both through the sky, our talons locked into the other's scales. No serious damage done, but it hurt and yet felt wonderful at the same time.

"You moron dragon, I thought you claimed your bride this week. Has she rebuffed you so early that you run from her with your tail between your shaking talons?"

My roar exploded as I twisted free and rose higher. I dove, taking him from above, carrying us both downward. He tore away, but managed to slice my wing, ripping a large gash in the unprotected inner flesh. I could still fly, still fight, but my anger receded with the agony. I landed in the soft grass, hanging my head.

Laryn shouted from above, "It's no fun killing a pathetic dragon. Is there something I can say to bring your anger back?"

I watched him land twenty feet away. "Why are females so difficult?" I mumbled.

His blue head flew back, smoke and fire shooting from his mouth, bellowing laughter. "To expect anything different, Bastian, makes you a foolish dragon. Go back to your female and talk her to death, woo her, as is your want. But stay out of my territory."

I shook my head, softening my armor, going out of fight mode. "Are we on for cards next week?"

"Yes, Sarn's place, same time. Bring your female so I can meet her."

I gave a grumpy growl. "Steal her, you mean."

"If you can't protect your bride, then it's always a possibility." His blue eyes shone brighter.

"Humph, you could try. You would die."

"Save your poetry for your bride. You will need it, you ugly, red-spawned demon from hell." He turned away and flew off.

The sun was full up when I saw my lair in the distance. I pulled magic within me, healing my wing and alleviating the pain. She wore a long flowing gown of white similar to her claiming dress but far more luxurious. She stood on the edge of my perch outside my bedroom. My heart dropped. I was too far away to catch her if she jumped. I pumped my wings, eating up the space between us.

"Do not jump, Acasia," I shouted. It was a plea, but I didn't care.

"Did you kill them?" Her sadness swelled within me.

"I killed no one." At least I hoped I didn't.

"Can I trust you, Bastian?"

I was closer now. Close enough to catch her if she jumped. My brain registered her use of my name at the same time she dove over the side.

What the hell? The woman was crazy, no... insane.

I caught her easily, my talons closing around her body, pulling her close to my chest. "You stupid female," I growled.

She actually giggled. "I knew you would catch me. I lied last night. No man has touched me. I was angry and wanted to pay you back for keeping the truth from me. I realized after you left that you would kill them. All the men. But none of them ever even looked my way."

I took us higher, my heart swelling with joy. "They looked at you, silly female. I wanted to kill them but couldn't. I may have left a building at the center of town in flames, though." She burst into full laughter and made my heart swell near to bursting.

Her palm opened against the scales on my chest. "You used my name earlier. May I stop being 'female,' 'human,' or any of the other things you call me?" She caressed me with her fingers as well as her voice.

I would give her anything at this moment. "Yes, Acasia, I shall use your name unless you are acting like a stubborn woman, stupid human, or foolish female." I flew us to a clearing with soft grass, gently spilling her from my hold before landing far enough away not to hurt her.

She dusted specks of dirt and grass from her dress, eyes alight with merriment. "Why did you throw a fit and trash your filthy tower last night, Bastian?"

She'd seen my rage, didn't run from it even after tempting me to murder. Definitely insane. But more beautiful than any bride I'd ever known. "I was jealous of your finger." I huffed it out, the thought still making my anger rise.

"My what?" It took her a moment, but then I watched her cheeks heat, turning a bright red. "Oh."

"I want your pleasure. I want to be the first."

She looked down and mumbled softly, "I never placed my finger past the barrier."

I came closer, lifting her chin with a talon bigger than her head. "Thank you, Acasia. I will treat your innocence with care."

Her gaze burned into mine. "I do not wish to remain innocent any longer, dragon, or I will be forced to use my finger."

Oh, my stubborn lady. How could I not laugh at her demands? I felt my armor slide away, freeing my cock as it grew. If she'd watched last night, she'd seen me at full mast. The way she looked at me this moment made me want to blare my mating shout. The sound I could only give when taking my mate in dragon form. I'd given up ever finding a dragon mate, but I could make this female my true bride.

I pulled in the magic and shifted.

I stood tall, proud, and human in front of her, my cock on full display. She looked at me, her gaze traveling my body before slowing returning to my eyes.

Her voice quivered. "Will it hurt?"

Her uncertainty was precious. "But a moment of pain-a lifetime of ecstasy."She looked around the field. "Will you take me here?""I leave the choice to you. Here, or in ten minutes, a bed."Her smile grew and I would swear it blocked the sun. She was my sun... bright, beautiful, mine."Here, dragon.""My name is Bastian.""Here, Bastian. I fear this, let us get it over with."I walked forward and cupped her face, my thumb running across her chin. Soft... calling to me. I stepped closer so only inches separated us. Lowering my hand, I used both to lift her gown over her head. She was bare beneath."So beautiful." Each curve was soft and delicate.Desperation showed in her eyes. "Hurry, Bastian, please."I would not give in until she was ready. "No, my sweet. Your first time is better slow. Did you like your finger?" She passed out, which was usual for the first time. I should have warned her, but I was too impatient to make her mine. I stood up and moved away, shifting to dragon so I could fly her back to my lair. I lifted her, snagging her dress in a talon and taking off. She stirred as I entered the tower."You cleaned it," she said in a dreamy voice."I did. It was time. The smell repelled me."I loved her laugh. So full, so perfect. I released her on the perch at the top of the stairs and shifted to my human form. "Are you hungry?""Starving.""I shall eat with you."She gave me a quizzical look. "You can eat human food?"I laughed at her funny face. "Yes. I like to hunt as dragon, but I like the finer foods also.""Do you cook?"I shrugged. "No, I have servants for that.""You mean there are other dragons here?""No." I removed a piece of grass from her hair. "They are human.""Human. You have humans here?"She wouldn't like this. Most of the brides did not. "They serve me and no

I watched her read, her legs curled on the settee, pillows propped behind her shoulders. "Do you play chess?"She gave me another treasure I hoarded-her smile. "I play checkers.""Humph. Chess is the game of kings. I do not play a child's game."She innocently gazed around the room not looking at me. "I see no kings here."That was why I enjoyed her so much. She liked teasing me and keeping me on my toes, or talons depending on my form. "I shall teach you and maybe in twenty years, you shall be competition.""Twenty years?" she scoffed."It will take at least that long to train your human brain in the game of warfare.""Only if I may teach you checkers.""Humph, when you beat me, I shall learn your silly game."We moved to the table holding my chess set. The pieces were heavy gold and silver, the board black and white marble. I'd stolen it from a king in a faraway realm. The fool thought he'd captured a dragon. I challenged him to a game for my freedom. He'd agreed, and I won.

Sarn's lair was different. Not as comfortable as Bastian's, barren actually. Calista, his bride, welcomed me with a soft melodic voice. She was much older than I was, her hair long and grey, her face wrinkled but the beauty she once held was still evident. It was surreal meeting a claiming bride whom I'd studied in school. The other, Megan, belonging to Tahr. She was middle aged, with graceful beauty and still full of life. The dragons seemed relaxed, friendly, and curious of me until Laryn arrived. I received a sharp jerk to my hand, which brought me closer to Bastian's side within seconds of the devastatingly handsome man's approach. With gentler and more subtle moves, Sarn and Tahr brought their women nearer too.Laryn nodded his head in greeting. "Tahr, Calista, Sarn, Megan." He looked at Bastian, but then his eyes wandered to me.Internally, I winced. Not from the leer he half-heartedly gave me, but from the pain I saw deep within his dark eyes. They had a blue spark; whereas, B

The days became weeks and weeks, months. Acasia fit into my world and blossomed from sexually shy to the erotic bride of my dreams. I knew she missed her family, but I didn't let that bother me. She entertained me, made me laugh, and sometimes vexed me. Overall, I was calmer. It was always like this once my bride settled.I'd caught Laryn entering my territory one night. I needed to be more vigilant with my shiniest treasure. I also understood his pain, so I didn't kill him."Why are you here, bastard blue child of Cookie Monster?" Tahr came up with the nickname after a trip to the earth realm. We all laughed after our own inquisitive travels when we discovered the reference. It stuck."I can't do this, Bastian. Not again. I'm lost." The words sounded as if they were retched from his gut.I swooped in beside him and stuck close as he glided through my territory. I had no doubt he'd steal Acasia if given the chance. But he came for company- anything to combat the grief and lonelines

Her excitement kept us awake most of the night while she pestered me with questions. I would almost be asleep and she'd think of another one. But I didn't regret telling her. I knew she got lonely, I just didn't like thinking about it. The following morning, she fluttered around preparing herself and asking more questions as I watched. We would be gone for two earth days, but the time between realms was strange and impossible to pinpoint how much time would pass here. During these trips, I rarely stayed more than a few days. It could be hours or days later once I returned. No rhyme or reason, but that was the gods' doing."Have you known your friends in this realm for a long time?""Yes," I snapped, my impatience to leave making me cranky. She ignored the tone of my voice. "What will be the strangest thing I see?"I sighed; it would do me no good to put her off. "Technology. The dragon realm exists on magic. Earth has very little magic, so they are able to build and control toys th

I was away from Bastian and in the presence of another woman. It was difficult not to jump up and down with excitement but I acted reserved so I wouldn't scare Nikka away. Brunya had spoken aloud, and Bastian told me they could so I knew earth humans spoke. Another female named Mandy joined us. She was as excited to meet me as I was to meet her. She explained that she was a wolf and human mix and that Nikka was mountain lion and human. Since I now knew dragons shifted, I had no trouble accepting what she told me. I had so many questions about their realm, and Mandy patiently answered for about three minutes. She finally broke in when I asked about what Bastian called a cell phone. "So tell us about yourself. We've only just learned of your race and we've been dying to meet you. Honey, my mate, thought he could keep me away today. The man is seriously messed up in the head sometimes." She stopped talking and looked at Nikka before turning back to me. "Oh, I'm sorry. I'll let you answer

It was an hour later than I expected. This was an especially difficult pickup and I needed to discuss what was happening with Acasia. She was key to the situation and she wouldn't be happy about her role.I walked into the suite and found her passed out on the couch, an empty bottle of wine laying on her chest. This wasn't what I'd expected to find, but how could I not smile? Removing the bottle, I picked her up and carried her to bed. She mumbled, but I couldn't understand what she said. I removed her clothes, regretting that I couldn't take my bride this night. I lay beside her on the bed and willed my stiff cock to calm.Hours later, she scrambled up and ran for the bathroom. My bride did not handle her alcohol well. I followed and leaned down beside her, gathering her hair to keep it out of her way."Go away." Her hand limply tried slapping me aside, but I ignored her."If you remember correctly, you've upchucked on my feet before.""Those were claws or talons or something, no

"I'm Acasia." She gestures behind her. "This is Bastian. We're very pleased to meet you. We just didn't expect you after what Jewel told us."I drop her hand and interlock my fingers in front of me so maybe I won't strangle her son in front of her. "I didn't expect to be here either," I reply honestly."Mother."We all turn to Ashrac."I'm in the middle of a kidnapping here and it would be better if we had this conversation another time. I haven't gotten to the having my wicked way with her part yet."My elbow slips and lands directly in his ribs. My cheeks burn. Boiling oil's too good for the ratfink. His father steps closer, his expression filled with concern and more than a touch of anger. "Flora, I will take you back to Earth if you wish to return."A loud rumbling growl leaves Ashrac's throat. "She is my mate, Father. No one will be taking her anywhere but me."Bastian's eyebrows arch. I'm guessing Ashrac doesn't usually speak to his parents this way. Decisions, decisions.

My eyes peel open to sunshine. I'm in Ashrac's room, in his bed, and he isn't. I look around and still no Ashrac. I stretch my arms and I'm about to rise from the bed when a shadow passes in front of the window from the balcony. Dragonbreath went for a flight without me. We'll be discussing this after he comes back to bed and welcomes the new day with me like he should have. The dragon's shadow shifts to a smaller human than Ashrac and before I can put together what human it is, Jewel pops her head in the window. She looks at me questioningly. I pull the cover over my bare breasts that were perky and waiting for my mate. "Come in," I say because what else can I do? The strange expression on her face isn't what I'm expecting, and for a moment I wonder if I should have read more into her friendship with Ashrac. She sits on the end of the bed and continues staring at me."Is there something you need?" Ashrac caring about the humans and trying to make their lives better blew my world apart. He's about to do it again. His body against mine is firm, powerful, and incredibly sexy. His muscles ripple beneath my touch. I'm barely able to think and what I'm thinking is that I should tell him I've never done this before. Then, he releases my mouth and his lips travel down my body, kissing every inch of flesh along the way. I stop thinking at all and just feel. His tongue circles my bellybutton before dipping inside. I actually giggle over the sensation. My fingers go to his glorious hair and I pull slightly to make him stop. His head comes up and he's grinning. There are also flames dancing in his eyes and all I can think of is sensual fire.He lowers his mouth back to my flesh and continues on his merry way. Flames lick at my

I slog into a dense part of forest and remove my sopping clothes. I tie them into a small wet package that I can carry in my beak. My shifting powers are different than conventional shifters because I need words to start the process. I whisper the sacred words in my head that my mother taught me and her mother taught her. The world goes from blurry to crystal clear. In human form, without my glasses, I can see for miles if the view is unobstructed. Close up is another matter; all eagle shifters are far sighted when in human form. Shifting to eagle brings everything into focus."Stupid dragon," I mumble in my head as I scoop up the bundle and fly out of the tree line. I can't help turning and flying over the lake. There he is deep in the water bathing, thank the goddess. At least when he flies me back to my realm he won't smell like a dirty old shoe.I don't think about what I'm doing, it just kind of happens. She's been hiding from me. Now that I've seen her eyes I know there's more. Taking her to the lake to bathe is the only way I can think to see her naked body and decide for myself if she's worthy of mating a red dragon. I catch sight of myself in the lake as we fly over; Flora is riding in the saddle. Maybe the green will wash off. She's right about bathing, though. I do smell. I would say it's not a normal condition, but when I'm engrossed in a project, I forget about everything, including food and especially bathing. My mother still smacks me upside the head when she visits and I'm filthy. She also feeds me.Flora has no fear of being on my back. She's an eagle and I'm still flummoxed that I didn't know she was a shifter. I sensed her magic from the beginning but there are so many kinds.
