Chapter 1: New Beginnings
"Useless pigs " the voice exclaimed as he flipped through his daily sales and frowned at his lost profit.
Interrupted by the knock on his door.
"Come in, "he ordered
His Butler entered facing down dare not to look at his lord's face especially when his mood was aggravated.
"Speak, "
"A letter arrived this morning. " he answered, he handed the letter over to his master.
"Get lost and make yourself useful!. "
Seeing that he had been set free the Old Butler rushed out with relief.
Dear Wright,
My beloved brother,
It has been fifteen years since I last saw you. I heard you married a fair lady and were blessed with children. I have little time left in this world, before I die let me lay my eyes on you and save my name from perishing for I am still a man of Noble Birth.
"Noble birth indeed, " he threw the letter into the burning fire near his fireplace.

Jaylyn was aware that her father had sent words to his relatives in Dutchmall, his hometown.
She just hopes they answer sooner before he dies.
Her father, Daniel Bennett was Surprisedly merrier, for soon he would join the love of his life, Catherine. His illness has taken a worse turn. He had never regretted his decision marrying Catherine. They had big dreams but her life was cut short. He was not able to bear the pain of her loss, leaving him with their two year old to raise, left him miserable. His greatest regrets was being blinded by his weakness and not moving forward with life. All these years, he watched Jaylyn grow up to bear the burden of mistakes he made while he was running away from his problems. Now death has caught up with him. He just hopes her godfather gets his letter on time.
No Minister had agreed to perform his late rite. They tagged him irresponsible and sinful for he had refused to live by the Christian Rules and Norms.
Going down memory lane, he remembered when he met Catherine. They fell in love with each other, society was against their relationship so they eloped then got married. He had thought his parents would forgive him but they never did, instead they shut their doors and blocked their ears to his name.
After an eventful day at the bakery, Jaylyn was extremely exhausted. Miss Cherry Bowman had visited her soon to be mother-in-law, when Miss Cherry entered with Jacob holding his hand. Jaylyn felt a strong sense of rejection as much as she tried to feel unaffected by their display of love; tears rolled down her eyes overwhelmed by her feelings and she ran home.
On her way home, She saw people huddling near the walk-way leading to her house. Walking closer, she discovered that her house was the scene of attraction. Then she saw a magnificent carriage only fit for the noble class.
"Good day, sir"
She greeted the valet who stood firmly by the four wheeled carriage door with two finely suited coach men. Stepping out, was a huge man in his early forties, he looked just like her father..... But healthier and wealthier, he stood aloofly in his neatly embroidery designed gold cutaway tailored coat over a waist-length satin waistcoat and dark breeches, his stares has a way that not only intimated but make people fear him, the only odd thing about him was his pot belly.
"You must be my brother's bastard, " he said with an impressive voice.
She nodded still unable to look him in the eyes as he glanced through her unkempt hair to the nearly worn out clothing she had on..
"You look very much like your mother".
he ordered
" Take me to him immediately! ".
Still bowing her head, she moved swiftly and opened the door. His valet, a tall snotty- nosed man followed him inside, gave him a clean handkerchief to cover his nose.
"It smells like a corpse, is he dead" he asked the valet as he stopped at the small bedroom door, reluctant to move any further, his initial plan was to see if he was dead, the reason why he stayed five days before responding to his letter.
"No, my lord, give it a day or two. "
He answered.
"Hmmm, so this is how life has treated you , Daniel".
He called out his brother's name.
Despite the negative remarks, her uncle's arrival turned things around. He cleared all her father's debts.
Before her father passed on, he promised to properly take care of her, accept her into his family and marry her off to a suitable suitor.
It was like a dream come true....
The Baron left immediately for Dutchmall and arranged a carriage to carry her when she was ready to join him. Jaylyn was not comfortable with the idea of following her uncle to Dutchmall, her mind kept pondering if they would really accept her, especially now her father was late. Left with no other option since she was still unmarried and her uncle is now her legal guardian. Her thoughts for a better life......
Leaving Ravengate was harder than she thought, the place she had wanted to escape from, the place that holds memories of her dead parents, the only valuable item she had on was the locket containing a picture of her mother and father holding her, when she was a year old.
She thanked the Stales for all they had done for her as she was about to leave. Jacob was to wed in two months' time, after which he would move to Millpost to start his new job as a clerk.
She huddled all her belongings and left with the boarded carriage.
While in the carriage, she looked out through the window, and she remembered all the bad memories she had of Ravengate. The first time she arrived with her parents, her mother's sudden death, when they first lost their home and moved from room to room.
"There was nothing to miss in this place", she said to herself.
The coachman stopped at Norton at dusk, where they settled for the night in a local inn. This was the first time she had gone far beyond the shores of Ravengate.
As she finally decides to rest for the night, she drafts off to sleep.
"Remember you stronger than you seem" her father's voice echoed in her dream.
As the journey continued the next morning, the weather was not favorable, it rained heavily and everywhere was soaked with water.
They had to stop in three different places. Finally they got to Dutchmall center square, everywhere was crowded with people walking in different directions.
"Hey miss!, we are now at Dutchmall, get down! ." he instructed.
Seeing that Jaylyn was still struggling to gather her bags down, the driver roughly swung her out of his carriage and threw her things on the floor.
Almost landing on ground , Jaylyn was furious at his rudeness before she could rebuke the driver, who had already left.
Trying to get herself together, she was being pushed from both sides. No one paid attention to her dilemma nor tried to help her.
"Hey, You better move before I splash you water. " shouted someone from a window.
Quickly carrying her bag, she entered Bareville, her uncle is the Baron of Bareville.Jaylyn marveled at the sight of the Grand Manor, it was far from anything she had ever seen. The grand Manor was located at the Eastside of Bareville. When she knocked, the butler ushered her after a brief introduction.
Walking inside, the walls and floor were greatly influenced by Italian design, she sat near the fireplace to warm herself.
Admiring her surroundings, she smiled realizing what a great sacrifice her father had made for love.
He rejected a blissful life, wealth and lost his inheritance.
"Wipe off that smile, you low life" a vicious voice exclaimed as a woman dressed in a milk Bergère hat and brocaded salmon silk sack-back gown descended from the stairs holding her hand was her uncle now her guardian.
"Good day, my lord and lady., "
She curtsied, not too surprised by their words for she had prepared herself for whatever treatment she would receive.
"Save your greetings, let me make this clear, you are now a slave to this family " Her uncle said in a boring tone as if he couldn't wait to get the conversation over, having better things that require his time.
" Alfreda , my dear she's all yours! "
Her uncle's words cut through her plans for a better life.
August , 1712 It's been three years, living in Dutchmall turned into a nightmare. Jaylyn was given a room in the servant quarters where she works tirelessly day and night with little or no food. Turning twenty in three months time made matters worse. Her uncle plans to sell her off to the highest bidder, once she reaches twenty. Once again, she plans on running away but this time, she has no money. Her sufferings are endless. She starts her day with daily torment and anguish. The blessed memories of her parents kept her moving everyday. She had learnt to treasure every little moment of peace she gets. As she lay down in her small bed in the attic, she sang herself to sleep daily. Nothing was holding her back from finding her own happiness, she held on to her locket containing the pictures of her parents. The mornings were the worst in the Bennett household, Lady Alfreda barks
The Bennett generation are known throughout Witherhall, their ancestors settled in Dutchmall far back in the 1300 century. They became famous in the 1500 century because they were the best farmers of that time. They acquired lands and progressed into farm trade. Through yearly tributes and deep display of loyalty to the King as they grew in wealth and power. The King gave them a royal title as Baron and Baroness of Dutchmall. In this present generation they have the best wheat plantation, their wheat flour is called golden flour best for pastries making because they make the best bread, cake anyone could ever taste. Jaylyn had learnt so much about the great history made by her ancestors and she gets happy whenever she cultivates wheat. Her uncle had grown their business bigger than his previous ancestors. Recognizing her crazy love f
September, 1712BridgebrockThe Grand Duke of Bridgebrock arrived from his five years voyage with his wife, Lady Morgan from India. All the servants expressed their gladness as they welcomed their master and mistress back home in ecstasy. Their son Lord Bryan prepared a grand feast to celebrate their return. His mother hugged him so tightly, he could hardly breathe."Mom, you are going to strangle me to death." he teased her." Hash, you brat!,"his mother playfully beats him on the back. " My baby is now a man. " she said with joyf
Jaylyn ran home in a haste not realizing her appearance was so unkempt. She was saddened that she hadn't properly thanked her savior knowing the state of things at home. She tried remembering his face, he has a bright or rather dazzling face. His eyes stared deep into her as it shines like a blue sea twinkling at night. This was the first time she had seen anyone as astonishing and handsome, she felt red sparks around her cheek bones.... She hurried through the thorny bushes for it was the easier path home. From across the stable as Lord Bennett mounted down from his horse he watched Jaylyn running into the Manor looking roughly inappropriate. Her hair covered with bush leaves down to her gown ripped off from the side revealing excessive part of her skin. He beckoned his footman to send for her before she made her way into the hou
Lying down on the cold hardened ground made of black wrought stone, it sent chills that ran through her body making her weaker and fatal, Jaylyn had already resigned to her undoubted fate as she stares deeply into the dark brick wall with a distraint quality in her eyes as if the bleak wall was speaking to her . The little light that reflects from the punctured roof helps shade her from impending doom and aids her in order to notice rodents that share the dungeon. As days count, the more her sense pricks at every sound she hears...be it the dripping sounds of water, crackles made by mice or scratches made on the walls. Jaylyn became aware of them, consumed by fear whenever she closed her eyes to see the image of the lifeless body she found when she was thrown inside. Fear tickled down her spine, as she wa
The guard dragged Lilian as instructed toward the courtyard. Standing near the door was the Butler who stood there motionless with his eyes fixed directly ahead. Lady Alfreda sat on the sofa that centered around an oak wooden table with a silver tea set in front of her. The guard gripped her elbow tightly as he pushed her down on bended knees to the floor. Tension rises as terror ran through her mind, swam with tears, she cried for mercy. " I have realized my mistakes my Lady, I should have not kept the pregnancy, I should have never come back to Dutchmall..." When no response came forth, she pled again this time by rolling herself on the floor
The Baron paced around his chambers pondering over the plan his wife had mapped out for him. His face crawled out with a slight smile, Lady Alfreda was excellent in her scheming ways. His business has been placed under the microscope of the Royal knight with its current problems , there are so many mouths that need more money to keep them shut."Sir Victor came at the right time.." He muttered.Even if the sick bastard was a fool that can't fix his drinking problem, he was the right match. All the Baron needed was his money. If only James was docile and brilliant as expected, He was sure his wheat farm business would still be progressive. He mentally
Mrs Camila was saddened by what had happened at the Manor so she sought ways to save Jaylyn from her impending marriage. The visit of Lord Bryan had stirred trouble for Jaylyn but he was the only one that could save her since his father was friends with her father. The wedding was almost at hand, the urgency of her safety was ultimate. Mrs Camila paced around the kitchen thinking of clues to rescue her. "This time they have gone too far, l will never let this child suffer again!," she said with full confidence Judging by their reaction to Lord Bryan arrive,
The ship finally reached Lancoast, the fish village after a week on the sea.All passengers and crew members rolled out to stretch their bodies on land. It became more alarming for Jaylyn and her new family for now they were on land, hiding from her uncle was almost impossible. The crew members began to offload their luggages one after another, Jaylyn said her goodbyes to the nursing mother and her crying baby before heading back to join Miss Camilla who was still chatting with Old Marthy. Despite the intriguing conversation she was having with Old Marthy,Jaylyn could still Sense that she was tensed up as she frequently turned behind her shoulders for any signs of danger . Jaylyn had so much on her mind that she didn't realise Simeon was walking closely behind her. He whispered as he drew closer softly in a
October, 1712,The Grand Estate of the Grand Duke of Bridgbrock. The weather had suddenly changed drastically now thunder and rain has started to battled out their difference that evening. No one dares to come outside because the weather was not one to reckon with.Yet the heavy splashy sound of wet horse could be heard matching into the duke's estate.Lord Bryan had just arrived from his trip to Ravengate in search of Jaylyn. No news concerning the girl yet, he sent out his men for weeks but no one has any information about her whereabouts. This time he had fully accepted what her uncle had told him.
Mrs Camila's eyes turned tearful as she began to sneeze and sneeze because of the cold weather. Her illness has worsened as the weather has grown colder as they entered deep into the sea.The double clothing couldn't stop the cold and she needed heat to keep her warm. The only heat available was the one used by the crew members to warm themselves.Jaylyn goes to see if she could ask for help to warm her body or find someone to help build a small fire in their cabin. When she reached the fort, she found the young gent that rescued her talking to his crew members as she stood debating on how to approach him, still admiring him from afar as she watched him talking.
As they finally settled down among other passengers, the sign relief crossed their faces. All passengers were directed to their various cabins. The ship was named Virgo, it contains ten crew members excluding the passenger and cargo. A captain, three sailors, Stewards, cook, carpenter, sail maker and labourer.Jaylyn and Mrs Camila were directed to our cabin, which they shared with two other passengers. One an old woman with her husband and a mother with her daughter who was quite young and nursing her six months old baby. Jaylyn carefully helped Miss Camila settle down on the bunk bed while Grace arranged their small luggage near the small corner. The ship was not grand but big enough to accommodate all the passengers and crew members. The room was quite comfortable.Three bunk beds at different sections of the cabin.
As the day drew darker, Jaylyn anxiety heightened as she lay awake waiting. She peeps through her window whenever she hears any sound. This got her extremely bothered, she just hoped Mrs Camila would be safe and out of any danger. She got down on her knee and prayed silently."God please save us tonight!",Immediately the door opened Miss Camilla quickly helped her out of the room. Before she could speak, she hushed her." Hush, now child no question just follow me!. "They walked down the hallway silently, all the guards were fast asleep, some with their mouths wide open, Jaylyn couldn't help but chuckled as she sa
