The next morning she awoke to the alarm clock and thought of the night before. It almost seemed like a hazy dream. He had left around ten that if they wanted to keep their budding relationship a secret, he couldn't be gone for too long, his roommate was a horrible gossip he had said. He had been beyond happy when she deleted the app from her phone, and the two had exchanged numbers instead. Though the initial game was over, he said there were a few more games to play. She had to take his word on that. Sarah had no real clue as to what they were.
As she rolled out of bed, she heard her phone go off with a message.
Good morning Princess.
How did you know I just woke up?
My room is right above, yours, remember? Your alarm is rather loud.
She could hear him laughing upstairs as she threw a shoe at the ceiling. She could also hear the sets of two pairs of feet w
As her doorway darkened again, she looked up into the face of her friend. Sarah could see something was wrong. Aaron always had a tell when he was trying to put on his mask of indifference, but it never worked when he had to deal with her. She read his face. He wasn't smiling at her like he normally did before he began teasing her like an older brother would. The relationship between them had grown to the point they were family. When people would ask things like why their relationship went this way, it was simple. They went through hell together while overseas. They dealt with the problems there and then came back and had many more to work through. They were the only ones besides the rest of the small team that had handled the outbreak who could ever understand what had happened and what they had seen. "We need to talk,” Aaron said. Sara knew that even his voice was strained. Whatever he had to say was not going to be good. He didn’t wan
"The special forces guys came out at just the right time and took care of it,” she said. "He had a syringe of sedative and was dressed like an MA ordering me out of my car. I knew something was off, and I was already on high alert because of the grenade and then my house. He didn’t look like one of our cops. I can’t say how I knew, but I just did. The green team came out as he was screaming at me to get out. Call it great timing or fate, but I thought they would have told you when they got back.""What sedative?” he asked."Don't know. It was all the quick test showed,” she said. “I had a test in my trunk, so it was only a quick test.”"Goddamnit,” he said. "Let me think."Sarah also had to think as she went back to her office and sat in her chair. The door was open, and she was staring in front of her but not seeing anything. She was trying to rack her brain of any hint that something happened
She had been recruited for this job when she had sent in a paper to a doctor who had founded the organization she currently worked for. The paper that she had sent in was a correction to a research paper that had been published a year before when she had been fifteen. At sixteen, she hadn’t been looking for her dream to be handed to her, but after that paper had been looked at and they saw she was correct even with the lack of education in the field, they knew she was the one who would change the field. The two had prepared her in those two years for the things she would have to deal with, including the idea that she would be in a hot zone. They had no idea at the time how right they were. While over sea’s trying to take samples of nearly everything so they could find the origin of the virus in question, an outbreak broke out. The area was already dangerous with staying off the local guerilla's radar so they could work without a firefight. The tribes were mostly f
Her phone rang. It was an outside call but had somehow not gone through the switchboard. The ring was different so she could tell if it was coming from in the building or out of it. The switchboard calls all went to the first line for each person. This one was on her third line. This call was to her directly on a number she didn’t even know she had."Hello?” she said into the receiver. She normally had a whole thing to say, but the fact she knew the call was for her, she didn’t go into it. She was holding her breath, hoping it was someone from the team or something. It would be like one of them to call her this way. Some way to let her know they were okay.A computerized voice answered, "So now you know."She raised her head and waved at Akechi in the meeting room, knowing even if he was not looking at her like he had been, he would see the movement. He jumped up and walked out of the room, causing everyone to stop and look
"Okay, then. Why reach out to me if you are just going to kill me? To strike fear. If you know what we did over there, you know I don't scare easily.” she said. Her boss looked at her questionably but shrugged his shoulders. It was one way to handle it. She was challenging the person now."I know what you did. I know what you are capable of. I know why you all must be dealt with.” the voice said."You know nothing of what I am capable of doing,” she replied without thought. She had no idea what could have sparked this much hatred, though. Sarah was still sifting through the memories, but none of them were adding up to her or her team had done something so evil that they needed to die or be kidnapped, and then God knows what would happen to them."I do, dear Daktari. I know more than you think.” the voice said."Try me,” she said as the line went dead. She looked up at the people in her office. The light went off
Col. Oda began to outline a rather simple plan for right now. First to start using their assets at hand. He suggested rather harshly that both Aaron and she stay within the building to which both scoffed at. As the spec ops team was outlining their own plan for entry and removal of anything they find in the two houses they also expanded it to cars. After yesterday's incident which could have been a fluke in finding her there, they also added their vehicles to the list of things to go over. She and Aaron in silence looked at each other and nodded to walk out of the room only to return in full tactical gear with their side arms. Everyone gawked at the two of them, Aaron had trained with the Rangers early in his career and had gone through the NAVY SEAL training for the eight weeks. She, on the other hand, had also trained with the Rangers and Seals, it was a requirement for her to go into the field that Col. Oda had made when he took over the unit a decade
"Fine, Princess. You better stay fine. Otherwise, I may kill you.” he said."Second time I have heard that in five minutes, close but not the record.” She said as smiled again and giggled. She spoke a little louder, "Anyone else want to kill me?"Marco replied from across the room, "I always do."
She came running through the woods and saw the team standing in her front yard looking all around. As she ran through the crowd as quickly as she could they all saw what was following her while clawing at his eyes. She looked right at him and then as he nodded she fell down to the ground. Three shots rang out from three different angels all toward the police officer. He went down to the ground as she got up and ran to the team and placed herself in back of them. She waited as they secured the man and then was about ready to let her legs give way. The real police officers came running, and they could not identify the man was laying on the street. He was not one of theirs.
Three months later….The garden was in full bloom. From the flowers, she had planted to the vegetables producing things. She was in the back, harvesting what she could for the day. She was smiling when he came out into the back and was placing things in her basket. “Sweetheart everything okay back here?” he asked as he moved in back of her and he wrapped his arms around her.“Glad to see you home at a decent hour.” She said as she turned around.“Well, you see this new position required me to be there to plan ops versus going on them.” He said with a grin.“You like your new job?” she asked.“I do.” He said as he placed his forehead on hers, “You see, there is this little female who became everything important in the world to me a few months ago.”“Well, then she is one lucky woman.” She sai
Five hours later, the entire yard was buzzing with activity. She found out he never did anything half measure. There were four trucks packed on the street as he was trying to direct everyone in a way that would lead to success and things being easier for the two people. She had brought the pups upstairs so they would not be underfoot while so many people were there. She saw the planters that had arrived an hour earlier that she had already began working on. Matthew had orders paving stones and white crushed gravel for the rest of the yard as well as another grey gravel for the concrete. They now sat in piles at the end of the yard. His hole was complete, and they could begin as soon as things quieted down as the delivery people left.He was supervising the fence and sod being unloaded and placed on the side of the house. Her plant soil had arrived first, and she had already taken charge of that. She had placed the planters w
She woke to the sound of two yipping foxes and a man laughing. As she blinked her eyes open, she was surprised when one of the pups somehow flew on the bed and was dancing on her side. “Get her.” He heard and she saw that Tengu was jumping on her.“Did you teach him that?” she asked in her haze still half asleep.“I didn’t have too. He wanted you since I brought them down.” Matthew’s deep voice said as he walked in the room after the small fox. He bent down, and Kappa also joined her on the bed. He was slightly more subtle with his affections. He licked her face as she lifted the covers and he crawled into the snuggling up against her. “I did buy my replacement.”“I think you did. He doesn’t allow monster to attack me.” She said. As Tengu was trying to bite her foot through the blankets.“But sweetheart Tengu was begging to come
She lay in his arms, wondering how anything could feel so good and so weird at the same time. It was wonderful feeling. However so new to her that it was anything but as well. She knew that her whole life changed in the blink of an eye. She didn’t know how they fit into her life or how smooth everything is going to run for the rest of her life with another person involved things were going to be different. Very different for her. She never wanted to rely on anyone else life. The fact that she didn’t make friends didn’t bother her for the simple reason.Everything this man had done changed the way that she thought about life and her single state he wanted more. He wanted things that she thought she wanted as well was never quite sure if it was going to be in the cards for her not she tried to understand. It wasn’t easy. It wasn’t easy to and or to let him be a major one.It was still d
After they ate dinner watching the pups play in the back yard as the light slipped away. They finished up and collected the two dogs knowing tomorrow was going to be a work filled day. They had not really spoke about sleeping arrangements again; however, as they placed the pups in their crate for the night and turned on the light in the room, they had them in, he took her hand. Leading her downstairs to the couch and flipped on the television as he laid down on the couches and waited for her to do the same. Her body was in front of his as they laid there with his head propped up on his arm and the other thrown over her side anchoring her there next to him. She could feel the tension that was brewing within him as it slipped off him and into the world.“Matthew, what is it?” she asked.“Something is just off.” He said.“What do you mean?” she asked back.“Lists. Deadly viruses. You. None of it
“How about this one?” he called out from his office as she was trying to prepare a salad for dinner. She walked from the kitchen to his office where she was standing by him, and he swooped her onto her lap and smiled as she protested for a minute.“What are the dimensions?” she asked.“Eighteen by ten.” He replied.“That is slightly bigger than I thought you would go.” She replied.“They will need their space and as you said a place for them to run. I don’t want to keep them in it all the time, of course.” He said.“Of course.” She said, smiling. “Tengu is going to be your partner in crime.”“And Kappa is going to want to be near you most of the time.” He replied.“Matthew, you do realize I don’t live here, right?” she asked as she looked at him.“One step at a time.” He said.
The day seemed to fade away as he sat at his desk in the office doing some work while he could as she lazed about on the couch with the two new additions to the house. They were still very much puppies regardless of their interesting parentage. They both liked to sleep, and they would get up to romp around and then fall asleep again. She wondered as she watched them if they would be more active at night like foxes are apt to be.Kappa took to her. He was always by her side no matter if she moved him away, he was found snuggling up to her within minutes. Tengu went to a spot it must be that Matthew favored. He would curl up with his long fluffy white tail wrapped around him and wait for Matthew to return to the spot. When he did, she had dozed off.“Well, guys, let’s give her a break,” Matthew said softly to the two. Tengu was more than happy to play with Matthew while Kappa wanted to go back to her side. Matthew chuckled as he picked him
Chapter FifteenShe looked at the bundles curled up in her lap and thought about them. “We really didn’t think this through.” She said as it snapped him out of his quiet phase.“What do you mean sweetheart?” he asked.“We don’t have anything for them, Matthew.” She replied, “And they aren’t just normal dogs.”“So what?” he asked.“So that means they need extra care Matthew.” She replied. “I don’t know anything about foxes let alone fox hybrid pups.”“Well, I am sure we can find what we need to know out.” He said. “there is a wonderful thing called the internet. You know the place we played our game?”“Smart ass.” She said.“Better than being a dumb one.” He replied as he shrugged his shoulders. “Look we can get everything they need as the
Chapter FourteenShe woke sometime while it was still dark. The blankets had been pulled up around her, and she felt his arm as it was thrown over her side. The weight of it was comforting in a way she had never known. She could feel her body so alive but still so far off in the distance. She now understood why people liked this. It was something that had alluded her for so long that she was now finally understanding. He was breathing soft and steady into her hair as his body had curled around hers. The fit of his much larger body around her made her feel safe as well. Another new feeling that she had never known. She felt free and safe there in his arms. It was bliss. She closed her eyes again as she smiled to herself as she thought she could get used to this feeling. She slipped back into Morpheus’ grip. Her dreams were simple and basic. She had nothing in the world to fear even if she was being tracked by a very dangerous
