Days after Bree got that nagging feeling that something significant was about to happen in their lives, she made time to confront him.
“What is happening, Bran? Why now? Why are you leaving? Aren’t you happy here with me?” She stood to level their stare, but he had grown more than a foot taller in just a year, making it hard to plead her case when he looked down on her.
“I just want to find out who I am, Bree. See if I can do this on my own.” Bran stood by the bookcase in the living room, picking at the well-worn books on the shelf, ignoring her, so she sat back down.
“Of course, you can do anything,” she said encouragingly. But then tried to pull at his heartstrings. “But why now? I’ll have no one.”
He raised a brow. They were adults, and Bree had been always independent since they were kids. So he knew this was an attempt to make him stay.
“Because we’ve always talked about this hiking trip with Mom and Dad, remember? And it’s time to conquer the great outdoors.”
“I remember, but that was years and years ago... When they were—” Bree bowed her head and failed to end her statement.
Remembering their parents always brought an ache in her heart, as they were very close. It was never easy to recall the moments when their family was complete.
Growing up, the siblings had a very happy childhood and never imagined losing both their parents at a young age, and now, with Brandon leaving, she felt more alone.
“With Nana gone, I have no other responsibility… You’re all grown up, Bree. See, you’ve even been accepted to the police academy. You don’t need me. I, on the other hand, feel like I’m still a teenager with no purpose.”
“But I need you. Bran, you are the only family I have. It’s always been you and me.”
“I know what you mean, but I feel like I don’t belong in the city anymore.”
“This city? Then we’ll move.”
He smiled. Bree had always done everything he wanted, even when it compromised her needs. But it was time to lead their own lives.
“I feel like the outdoors has been calling my name.”
“I thought dreaming about the wild ended a while back? You stopped talking about running away once you began working.”
“I worked to get money for my gear. And now, without Nana stopping me from going, I feel like it’s the right thing to do.”
“What if I want to stop you from going?”
“Bree, please don’t,” he held both of her hands in his and touched their foreheads together. “I need this.”
Bran knelt in front of her, and though she knew the decision had been made, Bree still pouted to convince him to stay. “How about if we go together? I just need a few months to train, then I can take a leave of absence.”
“You can’t. You trained to be in the police academy for two years. Now that you’re in the program, it would not look good on your record if you pull out suddenly.”
“Why are you making so much sense? Where is the impulsive brother I rely on to get me into trouble?”
“I’m still here. I just don’t want to harm your career.”
“I just feel like you’re abandoning me.” She sighed and leaned her head back.
Bran matched her pose to avoid the awkwardness in the situation. They were never good at confrontation, and talking about their feelings was never their thing. “I’m not.” He sighed. “You know I’m doing this so I can become a better brother. I know I haven’t been there for you all those years, but I promise, after this trip, it’ll be you and me.”
“But we’ve never been apart before.”
“You make it sound like we’re connected by the hip.”
“Shut up!” She thumped his chest while he pretended to be injured. “We’ll be states apart. The time zone won’t be the same.”
“We don’t live in the dark ages.”
“But we’ve never been that far from each other.”
“I’m not leaving forever.”
“You’re my rock, Bran. What will I do without you?”
“Are you admitting you’re going to miss me?”
“Don’t be too cocky. Of course, I will.”
Bran’s voice caught on a more serious tone when he spoke. “Don’t make it too hard. Why don’t we do this? After I conquer this trail, I’ll go with you.”
“On the same trail?”
“Yeah, if that is what you want.”
“But then it won’t be an adventure.”
“It would, because then I can show you the best spots. Just think about me as your expert tour guide. We probably won’t get lost as much. We both know how you are with directions.”
“I guess.” She replied, not rising to his bait.
“Please, Bree. I need to do this.”
She sighed in resignation. How could she say no when this is the one thing that would make him happy?
“For me, please?” He added with a pitiful look. “I feel like this is my quest.”
“Okay, but I have one request.”
“What is it?”
“I want to set timelines and target destinations so I know where to find you.”
“That’s more than one.”
“I’m serious,” Bree smirked. Bran could always lift her mood, no matter the situation. “I need something to hold on to while you’re gone. Not knowing where you are will only make me anxious.”
“More than you have been lately?”
“Bran!” she said, looking at him with her serious, I’m not kidding face.
“I promise to call every weekend so you’ll always know where I am,” he said excitedly. Anything reasoning she tried would be pointless.
“There are campsites and rest stops that have cell service and pay phones, so you don’t need to worry. It’s not like I’m trekking to the middle of the African jungle. There are different means of communication everywhere.” He added while spreading the map of the United States on the dinner table.

Do you think Brianna is too clingy?
“Bran, is it too late to convince you not to leave?” Brianna asked as she picked on the straps of his backpack. She was still hugging him and wouldn’t let go. They were at the airport and Bree took the day off to drop him off before his big adventure.“Bree, I’m just a few states over.” Brandon pushed her off his chest a few inches so he could see her face, but she had her head bent because she did not want him to see the tears in her eyes. He grimaced and kissed her forehead. “You can always hop on the plane and see me if you want.”He hugged her again, making her tear up more.“I know that. I guess I just don’t like being left behind.” She mumbled.“I’ll be back in six months and then you’ll tire of having me around the house. Enjoy your time without me. Grab a boyfriend or two while I’m gone.”Bree snickered. “Sure, let me flirt with the hot police officers while I’m training. That will do me good.”“As long as you like them, then I’m okay with that. Don’t let them intimidate you
Bree paced at the car rental shop. The number of customers ahead of her could be counted on one hand, so there should be no reason for the delay when there were two employees present. She could hear the person in the front struggle with signing up. They were having issues with the mode of payment as the credit card company put a hold on the approval.Bree usually had the perseverance to stand on the sidelines and listen to people’s issues, but today she was getting short. As if sensing her anger, the other staff member finished making small talk with the person they were helping and directed them to another employee to get their car. When she got the approval to find her brother, Bree immediately booked the rental. The place he last called from was an hour away from the closest airport, so public transportation was definitely out of the question.Chicago had very awful traffic, and they had trains and buses everywhere, so there never was a need to get a car. And now she wondered if ma
“What can I get you, honey?” A middle-aged lady asked as she sat on the counter.“A cup of coffee and pancakes if you have them.” Flying out early that morning made her miss breakfast, and because of the short flight, the airlines did not bother to serve any snacks.“You new around town or just passing through?” the woman inquired politely.“Actually, I am looking for my brother. He was here a week ago, using your phone to call me. I wonder if you’d seen him around.”“What does he look like? Lots of people come around here and I’m good with faces.” The lady looked sympathetic, which put her at ease.“He looks exactly like me, same brown eyes and black hair. Probably scruffier around the face because he has a beard by now and is more than a foot taller.”“Can’t say I’ve seen someone like that pass through here.”“Do you have any cameras we can check? Maybe you weren’t here when he came in?” “How are you so sure he called from here?” The old lady asked suspiciously. Bree noticed she ha
`“Marg, I heard we have someone new in town. What do you think of our visitor?” Grayson sauntered into the diner and sat at the counter to get news about the newcomer.“Who told you? The office grapevine?” He smiled and shook his head while accepting a cup of coffee.“Hmm… I can’t put my finger on it. There’s something different about this one.”“Not your typical lost tourist?”Marg pursed her lips. “You’ll find out when you see her. Use your nose. I think she’s one of us.”“One of us? And she didn’t announce her affiliations?” She shook her head. “Pack?” “Don’t think she’s aware. Something is masking her scent. I barely caught it.” A growl began in his chest. It was one thing to pass through town undetected, but to stop by the dinner and not declare which pack she belonged to meant the person was a rogue or was trying to stir up trouble and did not want anyone to know where she was from.Grayson Walker, alpha for the Silvercreek wolves, kept the peace among the packs around the tri
In the car, Grayson did not hesitate to interrogate Bree as soon as he set the car in motion. “So you want to tell me why you were looking for me?”“I called and left several messages a week ago regarding my brother, Brandon Stone, and nobody called me back.”“Brothers disappear all the time. I take it this is not the first time he left home without telling you?”“My brother has been on this six-month-long hiking trip on the Continental Divide. He was supposed to come home two—no, three weeks ago when he decided to extend his trip, said he wanted to see the waterfalls here in Washington.”“Silvercreek is a long way from that trail. Are you sure he was in this area?”“Yes, I’m sure he was in this area because the last phone he called from was the diner’s landline.” The sheriff’s brows furrowed. “Bran calls me every weekend without fail and it’s been two weeks. I have a feeling something bad happened to him.”“Why did you wait two weeks?”“I called your office and the ranger station a fe
“It’s just me and him, so you know how important he is to me.”“I see. Family is important in this town, too, so I know what you mean. Here we are.”“I expected a bigger building.” She said upon alighting from the car. “There’s not much happening in this town, so we need only a few employees. Plus, we have a lot of volunteers to keep the peace.” “Like Margie?” He smiled, noting her good observational skills.“Yes… just like Margie.”“So why haven’t you returned my calls?” Bree asked as they entered the small building. She noted that inside, it held more space than the facade, and she glimpsed a hallway that led to the back of the building, probably containing a couple of cells for holding. “Hold my calls,” he instructed as they passed by the front, and Bree paused for a second, recognizing someone at the front desk.“Who was that?” She asked, after Grayson closed the door to his office. “She hissed at me when I first saw her at the diner.”“The girl at the desk? Marina, and she’s al
Grayson was in the backyard, chopping wood to eliminate the tension he felt on his shoulders. The forest felt too quiet, and the air too calm, even for a small town like Silvercreek. Instances like these spoke of impending catastrophe, but his wolf could not figure out what was causing it. Sure, there were animal attacks in the forest, but those were nothing to be concerned about. They were just wild wolves driven to the nearby cities out of hunger. As the big felled trunk split in two, he wondered if a rival pack had invaded their territory to cause trouble. It had been several years since the Washington wolf packs and the surrounding neighbors made a peace treaty. There was no way a group would violate those rules unless there was some altercation between the packs he was unaware of.Wolves were naturally territorial and would protect the lands handed to them by their forefathers, even to their deaths. Grayson knew most of the Washington packs were peaceful and they would never make
Bree sneaked a glance at the house to check if there was anyone else around and an ugly taste appeared in her mouth when she imagined someone else touching his body. When she saw the lights were switched off, she nodded with relief. He was alone.“Yeah, you’re right. I should leave.” She turned her feet the way she came and felt the wind stir the air. And there it was. The scent that tormented Bree during her run.She inhaled deeply and, like a puppet, turned slowly toward him. Taking heavy, deliberate steps with her eyes still closed, she came closer.Grayson sneered. It was the trick women played on him all the time. Feigning disinterest for one second, then coming back to seduce him.He knew what to do, and what to say, but he had not been ready when Brianna opened her eyes and he saw the golden glow shining brightly.“What are you doing?” He hacked the stump with his ax, embedding the entire blade into the wood from the force he applied in surprise. She closed her eyes again and in
‘Bran, are you there?’‘Yeah. What’s up? The honeymoon has ended, so now you want me to get rid of Gray?’‘What? No. Why? Have you scared away my exes before?’‘What? No.’‘Are you sure?’ Bree did not believe him one bit.‘So what did you call me for?’‘Do you remember the training captain at the academy?’‘Yeah, the creepy one who watched you too closely? The one I said was a serial killer or just too in love with you?’‘Bran, be serious.’‘I don’t trust him.’‘Why not?’‘There was something about him. It was like he knew something we didn’t and was biding his time.’‘Is that why you never sat with him for too long?’‘I felt like being interrogated every time we talked. Seth asked too many questions about our family.’‘Well, he’s here. He said he came here to find me because I wasn’t answering in the group chat.’‘But you never responded to those.’‘Exactly, and when I asked if he was leaving now that I’m doing well. He expressed the desire to help find you. Said he was concerned for
Wolves. The moment Seth dismounted from his motorcycle, he scented wolves around him. It was a biker’s diner/bar, and it was only normal that wolves from different packs frequented these establishments whenever they passed through a city. There was an unspoken rule among packs that passersby need not announce themselves, but people who wanted to stay the night or take part in the festivities of a certain town should seek the designated biker’s bar or 24-hour diner to declare their intention to stay and be counted into the visitor’s log.Through this system, the packs kept the peace, making werewolves accountable for their actions. Runaways and wayward rogues are brought to prison to face justice when they cause any trouble. But this only applied to small towns like Silvercreek. Bigger metropolitan cities had a completely different set of rules because the cities had more people, the rules were more lax, and the packs mingled with each other without breaking any rules. Not everyone ab
Brianna got out of the vehicle even before the truck stopped. “I know that motorcycle,” Gray heard her say before the door closed.“Cap!?!” she yelped excitedly as she entered the diner. “What are you doing here?”“Thank the heavens, Brianna, you’re here.” Seth enveloped her in a bear hug and rubbed his cheeks against the side of her head. “Tell me you’re okay.”“But I’m on leave. They approved me for a month. Are they taking it back?” She tried to push out of his embrace when she felt an arm around her waist, pulling her back.A growl near her ear told her Grayson was not happy she was hugging another man. He had pushed Seth a few steps back, but the other man regained his footing.“Brianna is my mate and you better remember that.” She looked at Grayson, perplexed that he would declare his wolf status in front of the stranger.Seth nodded and came forward, his focus on Brianna. ‘Why’d you do that?’ She asked Gray, but didn’t hear his response.“We were so worried. The team kept mess
“NO! It’s what I felt at that moment, so I said it.”“Felt? Past tense?” She crossed her arms under the breasts, and he lost his train of thought.“Feel… Brianna. I feel that way, even now.” He squeezed his eyes shut. Looking at her breasts made him want to place the globes in his mouth and suck on them until she granted him her forgiveness.“So, why did you accuse me of lying? It’s easier to just tell me the truth. I understand if it’s all too much to handle—”“It’s not—I got pissed off because the last few nights we had were very special, but then Maggie called me very early this morning to tell me that your husband came to collect you himself.”“I don’t have a husband! And you know it.”“I know. My wolf has been trying to chew me out for doubting you.”“Good job, Slate. Kick him in the balls if you can.” “Ouch!” The thought alone brought him pain. “I’m sorry for hurting you.”“You didn’t—” She looked away with her mouth pouted like a sulky child.“I did. Even I can smell the sorro
Last night, just like the past few nights, had been made of dreams and moonlight. She sometimes wondered if they would always feel the same.Everything about Grayson was perfect. He was thoughtful about giving her little tokens every time he came home. There were flowers he picked from the side of the road, a wreath he shaped out of herbs, twigs, and pinecones he found when he ran through the forest to get to her house. And then stones that had shiny things inside them he picked up when investigating another animal attack. They weren’t expensive gifts, but it was the intention behind the acts that counted. And he always brought food, knowing the appetite she had. After their first night together as a couple, Bree asked him to stay every night. She still did not believe they were fated mates, not yet, but she wanted to find out more about the attraction that happened between wolves. Or even the one between her parents.Grayson’s grandparents were also mated pairs, but they were on vac
Grayson laughed. “I can manage. Don’t worry about me.” He reached over and kissed her temple. “I’m going before I embarrass myself.”Bree reached out and held his wrist. “No. I don’t want you to go.” Her eyes swirled golden, and when a slight breeze came through the open windows, he got a whiff of her arousal.Brianna took control. Pushed him to the bed and crawled on top. Ever since she said yes to pursuing their relationship, she had been feeling more empowered. That night, she felt like all her pent-up emotions were released, giving her the chance to fully harness her newfound strength.“You are not leaving until I get what I want.” She warned. He grinned. “And I accept.” His eyes shined silver as he felt the warmth of her body touch his. Everything about her felt silky and smooth, he thought, as his hands glided over her skin.Grayson kissed her with so much tenderness Bree felt as if they were caught in a dream where everything moved in slow motion. She enjoyed the way he swirle
Outside, Bree could feel the temperature cooling down as they sipped their tea. She had ditched Grayson’s coat when she came into the house, and though she felt the cool breeze on her skin, it didn’t feel cold, thanks to the hot beverage that kept her warm. They talked about her mother, and Bree appreciated Grayson for being observant. She was bothered that there was so much of her father in her that her mother had disappeared.“Did I tell you that my parents aren’t both wolves, either?”Bree’s eyebrows narrowed. “They’re not?”“No, my mother and grandmother are both human.”“Do you think you have more werewolf or human blood?”“I’ve thought about that, and I think the werewolf blood is more dominant only because it allows me to shift and have all these exceptional abilities, but I’m still human. I have the same feelings and get hurt the same way. Why do you ask?”“Because I’m scared, there is no more of my mother left in me. I think Bran has some of her skills. But I acquired nothin
Dinner at a fine dining restaurant where food was served in different entrees, in names she could not repeat, or tastes she could not describe, was not her ideal evening. But Grayson took her out on a very nice date, so Brianna said nothing to disappoint him. They had pleasant conversations during the meal, trying to identify the items on their plate. Some of the food came in fancy little spoons, in clouds of smoke, under flavored bubbles, and so little bites that she did not have enough to savor it.They were served 15 courses and by the end of the meal; she was more tipsy than full. Her tummy grumbled after Grayson paid the bill, which embarrassed her more than anything. She did not want to appear ungrateful, but she was still hungry.“What do you say about going to the diner around the corner and getting burgers and a milkshake?” Grayson asked while ushering her to their vehicle. “I’m sorry about dinner. It was a very wonderful experience, and I bet they worked hard to come up wit
Brianna was nervous. How do you date someone you’ve slept with before? How does one step back and restart a relationship?Grayson instructed her to dress nice as they were going to dinner at a fancy place out of town, so she went to the only boutique in the area to find a pretty dress. She had been happily looking at the selections when disaster struck. Bree remembered her wallet was still missing and none of the credit card companies wanted to send her a replacement card in Silvercreek. They sent all the cards back to her address, but how would she pick them up when she was thousands of miles away?“Did you find what you’re looking for?” The lovely owner asked. They had met before when she was searching for Bran and she thought Violet had a very calming presence about her.“Well, I have a problem.”“I know. Your wallet is missing and you want that dress but don’t have money to pay with?”“How? Did Grayson tell you I was broke?” She leaned in to whisper.“No, I’m clairvoyant, plus I
