The house had never been so silent as it was then. She longed for her father. Henry Reed had been a single parent after Olivia’s mother had died of cancer when her daughter was seven. He could take your breath away with one of his many architectural landscape designs. Transforming aches of barren land into a magical oasis, help her with her homework or bake cupcakes for her school fete. After school and on weekends, she spent time at the Landscape company her father owned, the same one she now owned and operated.

What a hypocrite she was missing her own father and at the same time wishing Eli’s had never shown up in town.

She couldn’t help but wonder, once Jack was back behind bars, would Dean once again leave Valley Mills?

She had to believe that he intended to be a full-time father. She also had to believe he’d protect Eli at all costs. She was going to give him the benefit of the doubt until he showed otherwise.

The hours of the afternoon crept by slowly. She did a pilates workout. Took a long bubble bath, got dressed in a fresh shirt and pair of jeans.

After that, she headed back to the kitchen, made herself a salad for a late lunch, and then made Eli’s favourite cookies.

She sat down at the table. The smell of freshly baked cookies made its way through the kitchen. She found her mind racing with so many questions. Was Dean married? Was Eli his only child, or did he have a family? She told herself that her intrigue had nothing to do with how the very sight of him had aroused old memories. The only reason she was curious about his life she needed to know how Eli fit in to it?

Would Eli’s custody agreement involve long summers with Dean and a stepmother? Would Christmas, Easters or Thanks giving be without her son?

And what about his father, who was still on the run from the authorities? She couldn’t think about Jack getting anywhere near her son.

She would find out tonight exactly what Dean planned. At that moment, everything felt out of control. She knew one thing was certain: she would not let Dean Grayson leave tonight until he answered her questions.

Dean found Eli bright, curious, and extremely well mannered. He enjoyed Eli’s laughter. If he had imagined the kind of son he would want, it would have been just like Eli. He was engaging, easygoing and a real pleasure to be with. He had to give Olivia credit for doing a wonderful job of raising their son.

As Dean pulled up in Olivia’s driveway. Eli looked up at him and said. ‘I had so much fun today.”

“Me too.” Dean smiled. “I’d like to spend more time with you. Would that be okay with you?”

“That would be cool, as long as it’s okay with mom.” Eli agreed. “Oh, I have a feeling it will be fine with your mother.” he replied.

As they walked up to the door, Dean placed a hand on Eli’s shoulder. He felt full of emotion; it had been a day of wonder for Dean. He dropped his hand back to his side as Eli went through the door.

He looked back at Dean with a wide grin. “Hmm, she must have made cookies.”

Dean followed Eli inside. He had to admit the house smelled good, the way a home should.

Olivia stepped from the kitchen and into the living room. Her face lit up as she leaned down to give Eli a hug. “Just looking at you, I can tell you had fun today.” She said, then looked up at Dean.

Dean’s breath caught in his chest for a moment. Her shining dark hair fell in soft waves, long and loose. The flash of those beautiful eyes, which held a depth he wanted to explore once more. She looked bewitchingly Femmine, in a casual crisp white blouse loosely tied at the waist and a pair of faded jeans that hugged her long slender curves. The open collar revealed a delicate neck, highlighting her warm, glowing complexion.

“Mom, we went horse riding at Michael ranch. Dean is a great rider. Then we went fishing and…” Eli stopped for a breath.

She laughed. “Lets go into the kitchen and have some cookies and you can tell me all about it.” Once again, she looked at Dean.

“I made a fresh pot of coffee.”

“Fresh coffee and homemade cookies? Count me in.” He replied. He followed her and Eli into the kitchen, where they sat at the dining table.

“So you were saying something about a fish riding a horse..?” she teased as she put down the plate of cookies and pot of coffee on the table.

Eli giggled. Dean poured himself a coffee from the pot and selected two cookies. He sat back in his chair and watched mother and son interact.

She paid him all of her attention and was so patient as he excitedly relayed the afternoon’s activities between gulps of milk and bites of cookie.

“Sounds like you had a full day of fun.” she said. “And now it’s bath and bedtime.” Eli had eaten two cookies, drank his milk, and finished his stories.

“Mom, before that, can Dean come up and see my room?” he asked.

“Alright, but only if it doesn’t take too long. Remember church in the morning and a growing boy needs his sleep.” Olivia replied.

Eli looked at Dean with a grin. “She is big on a good night’s sleep.” he hurried off his chair and eagerly grabbing Dean by the hand he said “Come on, you’ll like my room. Ive got the best horse figurine collection, and my granddad built the best bunks ever.”

“I’d better take a look then.” Dean replied.

He looked at Olivia. “Are you coming up too?”

“Ive seen his room before, besides ill sit here and eat another cookie.”

Dean followed Eli up the stairs. They passed one doorway and Dean glanced in. He knew it had to be Olivia’s bedroom. An elegantly made bed complete with cushions and a throw like out of a magazine, long white curtains swayed in the evening breeze. He imagined himself in that bed with her, remembering how they used to lie as one, completely sated, completely at ease. What was wrong with him? How was it possible to want a woman he had every reason to dislike?

Eli’s bedroom was definitely that of a horse lover. The shiplap walls displayed several horse pictures. Floating timber shelves proudly displayed his horse figurines. Navy and white curtains hung at the window with palomino horses riding the boarders. Coat hooks fashioned from timber and real horseshoes made home to his cowboy hat and a sign saying GONE RIDING.

“Do you think my room is cool?” Eli asked as he climbed up the ladder to his top bunk. At either end of the top bunk hung a stable door. When closed together, they formed the best cubby house a boy could imagine.

“Totally” Dean replied.

Eli beamed. “Can you see the glow in the dark stickers on my ceiling?”

“Yes, do you sleep on the top or bottom bunk?” Dean asked.

“On the top, you can see the stars on my ceiling. Last year I slept on the bottom, but Mom said I’m big enough now to move to the top.”

Dean smiled. “If I had bunks, that’s where I would sleep. I like stars too.”

His heart soared as Eli shot him a smile.

He wanted to grab Eli to his chest and hug him… protect him from any hurt that might ever come his way. He wanted to claim this child. He wanted the entire world to know this was his beautiful boy.

His bright eyes gazed at Dean eagerly. “Are we going to hang out again?”

Dean cleared his throat. “Absolutely. Now you’d better get yourself into the bathtub and I’ll go downstairs and make some arrangements with your mother.”

Dean went back downstairs with Eli’s words echoing in his head… “Are we going to hang out again?”… Is forever okay?

He hoped Olivia was going to be on board with him, spending more time with Eli.

“Olivia, he is a great kid. You’ve done a terrific job with him.” He said as he re-entered the kitchen.

“Thanks, he is a wonderful boy, but he can have his moments like all children. Would you like another cup of coffee?”

She looked a little shellshocked. “I’ll get it.” He poured himself another cup and then returned to sit across from her. “Ok if I pick him up from school on Wednesday for a few hours? I’ll bring him home after dinner.”

She looked so vulnerable. Oh, no! she was making him out to be the bad guy in this. He wasn’t giving in.

“Are you married?” She quickly grabbed her mug and took a sip.

“Why do you want to know?” He raised an eyebrow at her.

“I just need to know a few details about your personal life if we’re to work out an agreeable custody arrangement.”

“I’m single, and I have never been married. My life these past years has been all about my work.”

“Are you on vacation, or are you actually here in case your father shows up?” She gazed at him curiously.

“My superiors ordered me to take a sabbatical because of my relationship with him. I’d become a difficulty because of his escape from prison.” He leaned back in his chair, attempting to push down a rising wave of resentment in his chest that had nothing to do with Olivia.

Olivia knew Dean well. She studied him for a few moments. “I’m sorry Dean.” She was one of the few people who understood the length of Jack Grayson’s aggressive and malice reach. “Do I need to be concerned about him? I never wanted Jack to know about Eli.”

“The authorities dont believe he’ll show up here in Valley Mills, and I didn’t know about Eli until yesterday.” He replied, “It must have been tough on you as your pregnancy progressed?”

‘yes it was difficult. I heard everything from I got pregnant after an affair with a married man to the father bing after a one-night stand.” She sighed and locked her eyes on his. “Of course your name was mentioned, but when you didn’t return home, the rumour died.”

He didn’t like to think of her going through all that alone, being the object of scandalous gossip.

“Now let’s talk about Eli.” he said. She wasn’t happy, but he couldn’t help that. What he really wanted was to have Eli every day, like a real father.

“He gets out of school at 3.15 and walks home from the bus stop, two blocks away.” She sighed and thought for a moment. “If you have him home by bedtime, you could pick him up here Tuesday and Thursday afternoon.”

“And what about the weekends? I’m flexible with either Saturday or Sunday.”

“I work most Saturdays and Eli usually spends time out at Mia’s farm or comes into the office with me. You could take him on Saturdays.”

Now that was all sorted out, he was ready to leave. He didn’t need anything else from her.

They rose together from the table. Dean carried his cup to the sink. “Thanks for this afternoon and the coffee and cookie. I’ll see you Tuesday afternoon.” He said.

“I’ll let Eli know.” She said.

He was standing close enough to feel the heat from her body. The desire to hold and kiss her was overwhelming. As crazy as it was, he still wanted her. “Good night.” He said and stepped out into the cold night air.

Olivia closed and locked the front door after Dean left. She turned off all the lights and went upstairs to check on Eli.

She got into bed and stretched out, taking a deep breath in. She still entertained some desire for him, but they had their chance together and they’d blown it. Dean was strictly off limits.

The morning sunlight filtering through the curtains announced Sunday morning. Olivia lay in her bed. Thoughts of Dean had kept her tossing and turning all night. Thoughts of Jack somehow discovering he has a grandson hadn’t helped. She did not know how Jack might use that information, but she knew too well not to underestimate the evil of Jack Grayson.

She thought there was a moment when Dean was going to kiss her. What had astonished her was the awareness she had wanted him to. It was as if he’d walked out of one door many years ago, only to walk back in now, and she was still just as crazy for him. How many times did Dean Grayson get to break her heart before she stopped wanting him?

There had been no time in the last eight years to think about dating. She’d had no desire to be with a man. She’d been too busy being a single parent, taking care of her father and stepping up to run the family business. Besides, she hadn’t wanted to bring any man in to Eli’s life. It exasperated her that Dean saunters into town and within minutes of being around him; her sixteen-year-old hormones turn up to run the show.

Eli came running in to her bedroom and sprang alongside of her. “I had so much fun with Dean.” He grinned.

“Well, it looks like we both may have slept in a little this morning, now lets get dressed for church and I’ll see you downstairs for some quick pancakes.” She said, clapping her hands together as Eli jumped off the bed to go and get changed. Olivia knew the mention of pancakes would give flight to his feet.

Their Sunday was perfectly normal, church, catching up afterwards in the hall for refreshments with friends and neighbours. They filled the afternoon with board games, a movie, popcorn and a few tickles on the couch. Her world was back in order for the moment.

Monday morning at eight-thirty, Olivia sat at her desk in the Reed Landscapes company’s office. The business had begun 30 years ago. It was her father’s creation and over that time had evolved into a company with over 125 employees, many long term. Three men who started with her father were still with her. Phil Dark, chief designer and draughtsman. Albert Hunter, head of finance and accounting. These two men were her rocks. She knew she could rely on them. Their values were that of her father’s, Honesty, Integrity, Quality, and Teamwork. Graham Styles, was her third rock, he was the companies Operations manager. Olivia spent much of her childhood in the company’s office, factory and building yards watching men and women create and develop designs that helped make the company the success it is now. The sounds and smells that emanated around her were as familiar to her as her own heartbeat. This business was a part of her, a continuing tribute to the father she’d loved so much. She

Tuesday afternoon Dean arrived at Olivia’s house at three thirty for his visit with Eli. His plans for horse riding were a washout because of the heavy rainfall most of the day. He was glad it had eased as he left his car and walked to Olivia’s porch. She met him at the door and let him inside, where awkward “hello’s” were exchanged.“Eli should be along in a few minutes.” She said. He looked out the window. “Since it is wet outside, maybe I should go pick him up?”“I wouldn’t do that if I were you.”He turned to look at her. She smiled at him. It was the first real smile he’d received from her since his arrival. He had to admit it warmed him from the chill of the weather. “Ive been told that a soon to be nine-year-old boy quite enjoys walking in the rain.” She explained. “He’s also told me that he is no longer a baby.”“Then im glad you stopped me from making a serious error and insulting our son’s budding manhood.” Dean said.Just then, Eli came bursting through the door with laugh

The sun was bright and warm, the rain from the day before was just a memory. Driving down the main street in Valley Mills, Dean thought how quaint. The buildings all look like a western movie set. Only a few businesses had changed. However, there were still familiar places like Willies Joint Bar & Grill and The Beer Joint, still popular drinking holes. It would seem women still got their hair done at Curl up & Dye. The Mexican restaurant from back in the day brought a smile to his lips. He parked his car a few spaces past the restaurant and got out. He thought about those kisses long after he’d left Olivia’s house last night. Her mouth had been as inviting as he’d remembered. Something about her created a desire in him he’d always knew existed. He had to admit he wouldn’t mind getting her back into his bed again. At that moment, he was walking past the Sheriff’s office when Olivia exited the building walking almost into him. Thank goodness she couldn’t read his thoughts. She brought

Chapter 8The office was empty when Oliva and Dean arrived. She sat down at her desk and turned on her computer. Dean picked up a beautifully framed picture from her desk. He smiled instantly, recognizing her father and Eli together. “Your father was a wonderful man.” Dean placed the frame back down. “I can only imagine how low he must have thought I was.”Olivia looked at Dean in surprise. “Why would you say such a thing?”He dropped his head, unsure what to do with his hands. He reached them down deep into his pockets. “He must have known Eli was mine, and I was nowhere to be seen.”“Dean, when I told him I was pregnant, I also told him I was going to be a single mom. He never asked me questions, and I never told him who the father was. When we were a couple, I know he loved you, and I don’t for a minute think anything over the years changed how he felt about you.” His eyes narrowed as if in pain.He moved around behind her to view the monitor. “Let’s see what that blog has to say.”

Dean had spent all afternoon on the phone with his siblings. They all agreed whoever had talked to The Roaming Texas had shared enough information to suggest they had intimate ties to the family.Dean couldn’t imagine who the source of the information could be. Mia had called Dean. It outraged her that somebody was feeding the blog intimate details of their lives. “Dean, it’s not me I’m concerned about. Cate and I are adults, we can weather it. It’s Eli, I’m worried about.”“Me too, Olivia and I want to be the ones to tell him. I’m heading over there tomorrow afternoon. I’m glad you’re okay Mia.” He said.“If you need to talk, I’m here.” Mia knew her older brother was strong, but all this was a lot for even him to digest in a week.By the time the following afternoon rolled around, Dean was eager to spend time with Eli. He pulled up in Olivia’s driveway just before it was time for Eli to get off the bus and walk the couple of blocks home. As he walked to the porch, an unsettled energy

Olivia had to be honest with herself. It had been a tough week, and she didn’t mind that Dean was picking Eli up for their Thursday afternoon together. She could use the time to relax and unwind. They’d had to file another police report earlier that day about more vandalism on the current site, coupled with time on the phone soothing the council. Ensuring their job timeline will be honored. It was almost time for Dean to drop Eli home; she sat at the kitchen table with a cup of coco, but she didn’t expect him to come inside the house. Saturday and Tuesday past. Dean had picked up and dropped off Eli without coming inside. It irritated her. She didn’t feel relieved he was seeking some distance from her. She felt more than a little disappointed.Olivia saw the happiness and joy emanating from her son when he came home from his time with Dean. The two were growing very close. Perhaps it was time for her and Dean to sit down with Eli and tell him the truth. Maybe it was time for her to t

“We need to get out there and look for him, Dean. He isn’t there.” It was apparent she was in complete denial Eli had been abducted. “Think hard now. Any other friends he might have gone to play with?”“Perhaps… Maybe Steven. Eli has gone to his house for playdates before.” Her face was now drained and colorless.“Okay, call anyplace you think he could have gone, and I’ll call sheriff Tanner.” Dean knew she wouldn’t find Eli at any friend’s house.Somebody had kidnapped his son. He knew this with a gut instinct, and the faster the sheriff and his men got involved, the better the possibility of finding him. Looking back, he should never have removed the backpack. By seven-thirty pm, Olivia was in the kitchen making sandwiches and more coffee for those that had come to help. The house was full of well-meaning people; she appeared calm and in control unless Dean looked into her eyes, revealing her intense screaming despair. Deputy Dan Williams sat on a chair in the kitchen and coordinated fellow officers’ calls and neighbors and friends who had shown up to search.Dean was grateful Olivia had a couple of friends to offer support and chat with her. He paced the floor, waiting for news. Finally, he climbed the stairs to Eli’s bedroom. He stood in the doorway and stared in. He tucked Eli into his bed with a ruffle of his hair, and Eli placed his hand on Dean’s cheek.Dean, I’m glad you want to spend time with me. He said. Because I like being with you. Olivia’s mind raced with a mix of hope and anxiety as she clutched Dean’s arm tightly. The call had promised Eli’s safety, a glimmer of light in their dark journey. Her heart ached to believe it, to embrace the possibility that her son was finally within reach. ***It was dark when the men came through the front door. Ben and Logan headed into the kitchen, where they found the deputies. The look on Dean’s face told her everything she needed to know. He was beaten, his eyes filled with sorrow and pain she recognized well. He jammed his hands in his pockets. “I missed him, Liv; Eli was being held in that basement.” He looked at her with the shine of tears in his eyes. “I wasn’t enough for my father to love, I couldn’t get it right with you, and now I can’t find my boy.”She reached out and ran a hand over his face. Eli had his bright blue eyes, bold brow, and cheekbones. It was a face she loved. It was a face she had always loved; she’d seen the likeness of it every time she gazed at her son. At this moment, she’d never felt so close to Dean. She hadn’t realized until this moment that there was still a part of him, a little boy who longed for his father’s love. The storm had arrived, thunder rolled, and lightning flashed. Outside the abandoned farmhouse, a car door slammed, and a motor whined. Ed squinted through the grimy living room window and watched as the white van headed down the long driveway and onto the highway. His expression grew smug as a sneer crossed his narrow lips, and he recalled how easy it had been to move the boy from Wayne’s house. Now the brat is safely tucked away in the basement, and with the sleeping pills I put in his soda, he should sleep for a couple more hours yet… And I don’t have to listen to him crying for his mommy.Lightning flashed again, turning the whole world purple. In its glare, Ed saw something standing a few yards from the house, looking at him. He blinked and looked again… the lightning was gone, and with it, the something. Late that afternoon, on the outskirts of Waco, Texas, clouds gathered like a thousand black kites knotted together and trapped. The air inside cabin 13 suggested the smell of burning rubber and paint fumes. The Lone Star hotel had a long reputation for drug sessions and sleazy hookups. The room’s two occupants lay naked on the bed. The woman had taken her last breath half an hour ago. The needle hanging out of her arm had seen to that; there was nothing he could do. Eli tossed and turned in endless dreams. Flashing images of his mother and Dean calling him, he couldn’t find them, and worse, they couldn’t find him. His eyes opened in time to see the large black figure disappearing up the stairs. His heart was beating fast. He sat up and rubbed his eyes. He had been crying in his sleep again. Next to his cot, resting on a small table, was a glass of orange soda; it was his favorite soda. A treat his mother allowed sometimes. He drank it down; the sweetness felt cheerful. A moment later, he yawned the most enormous yawn he could ever remember as a sudden heavy sleepiness overcame him. “How dare she question my motives.” Dean was seething with anger. He clenched and unclenched his hands around the steering wheel. She hadn’t lived through the emotional turmoil and damage his father had put him and his siblings through. His mother’s death was enough to send him over the edge. To bargain for his son’s life was the most challenging thing he’d ever done.He drove faster. He was headed down to the marina where the exchange was supposed to occur. He wanted to look around and cool off. He hoped Ben and Logan could come up with some new information that would find Eli before Monday night. He drove down the gravel driveway and into the Bosque River Marina carpark. Attempting to push away the heated argument with Olivia, he focused his attention out of the window. Lying on his side, Eli willed his eyes to open. His clothes felt dirty against his skin. He needed a bath. He knew he was still chained to the wall, but the chain was long enough to allow him to move around the basement and reach the toilet next to an old sink where a cup sat so he could drink. Sitting up, he inspected his ankle and reached down to try to loosen the shackle again, but his ankle was now too swollen and sore to keep trying. He began to cry again. It scared him that nobody had found him. Was he still in Valley Mills? For all he knew, he could be in New York, he had learned a little about that place in school, and he knew that it was a long way from his home. He also knew his kidnapper wore a black coat and ski mask; Eli didn’t know if it was a man or a woman. He heard footsteps coming down the stairs. The black figure was carrying something new, an old wooden chair and something white folded under his arm. Eli tried to speak with his capture again. “Why are you keeping
