ROCCO

Not my smoothest move I'll admit.

There was something happening at the bar between us, even though she would probably deny it. There was a tango of back and forth, trading tiny nuggets of information, little steps back and forth to the flow of the music. I could see her eyes following me up and down the bar, sizing up my shoulders wondering what my build was like under my suit jacket.

When we leaned closer together over the bar, eyes meeting, her hazel irises dancing with curiosity, there was a possibility of something. I know I know I have made my rules clear, I don’t mix with shifters. She said she didn't either, let's don’t forget yet the ruby shards in her brown eyes said otherwise.

You can call me foolish, but I know for certain, somewhere in a different reality it went differently than tonight. In a world where drunken friends and bosses didn't interrupt crucial moments, I would have been popping open those jacket buttons and having the time of my life with her now. Heads you win, tails you lose.

As I sullenly cash up in the back whilst the staff clean up, I let my mind roam further and further down the path of desire.

It's the very definition of multi-tasking to accurately count thousands of dollars whilst imaging stripping a beautiful woman slowly. Peeling away those layers so delicately, barely touching her, teasing her. I'd have picked her up and mounted her on the bar. Her breasts at the height of my face, waiting to be caressed.

I would have dimmed the lights lower, turning up the soft music as I explore every inch of her. I would murmur her name, 'Selene' breathily into the crook of her neck as I kissed it. She would have run her hands up and down my chest, spreading her legs to pull me closer to her.

Allow me the luxury of my imagination, please.

She had a black silk bra underneath that jacket, her skin so pale and delicate. I had noticed her inhale my scent, it sent a burst of colour to her eyes. I'll be honest, it sent a rush of blood to my dick at the time too.

Seeing her enjoying something as primal as a smell was the most intoxicating part of the whole interaction. Hers was a heady floral perfume that seemed to surround. Human women never fully appreciate that aspect. I could easily imagine how sexy those blonde curls would look after being taken to heaven and back. That tight, precisely styled head of curls falling to just above her shoulder gave me a craving to leave her a tangle of delirious, messy bed hair.

Not tonight. Not ever now, that's for certain. And don't even ask me why I lied about being from the same pack as her. I am from Silverlake, same as Jacob but she wouldn’t remember me. I certainly wasn’t a big figure in Celstar town after the age of eight. Neither were the rest of my family after Alpha Wicknace delivered his “justice.”

I have my reasons for lying to her. I didn’t want to chat about the pack. I hate it, best to pretend I’m not even part of it.

I smack the table in frustration when I realise I cannot multi-task after all. Apparently the suave, sexy Rocco cannot count cash and deal with rejection. I let out a groan of frustration and hear Callum's low chuckle from the bar.

The instant she walked back in and saw me talking to that brunette pocket rocket her defences shot up faster than a Cold War bunker. It wasn't even worth explaining that I had actually been talking to her about Callum, sliding his number over to her. The wall of ice was reinstated, as emphasised by her bitchy little remark on the way out.

She judged me harshly, I'm certain you did too.

As the uncountable stack of money piles up before me I should be elated. This has been a great night for the Gilded Falcon, made a fortune, every customer happy yet I'm here frustrated over some ice-cold blonde shifter who thinks I'm a sleaze.

Fuck this. I'm a good guy you know.

Greg, the one who had his drunken mitts all over her body, acting more drunk than he was to cop a feel, now he's the one to watch. I watched his hands grip her waist and it weirdly sent a flare of anger through me. Fucking creep.

Was I angry because she didn't stop it, because she couldn’t stop it, or because it wasn't my hand on her? God knows. I'm getting tangled up over a girl I don't even want to get close to.

Callum walked through and rested his huge frame against the door.

"Can't win them all Roc," he smirked, holding a glass of iced water out to me.

I slapped my hand on the desk, "That's the annoying thing, she was one of us! I shouldn't have gone near in the first place."

Callum merely shrugged his shoulders as I knocked back the freezing drink. It acted like the slap on the face an attention-hopping idiot like me needs sometimes.

Back to business. Move along.

"I'll have this counted in twenty minutes, then we'll lock up?"

"Cool. Did you give that brunette in the red dress my number?" his face furrowed with concern.

His shaved head and blue eyes had an intensity about them that meant men always backed down from violence and women always assumed he was a teddy bear underneath. He had a much bigger frame than me. I was bigger than most humans, Callum was bigger than all of them.

"Sorry yeah she was pretty insistent. Thought giving a fake one would ruin us getting repeat business."

"Nah, it's fine. I'm sure she won't call, she seemed pretty wasted” he said, tapping the card against his fingers. “Think she liked you more by the end of the night anyway."

I grunted, "Trust me, the door is well and truly closed on anyone from that party," I muttered, picking up wedges of notes to start the recount. He gave me a mocking salute as he hauled his large form languidly from the door frame.

I picked up a stack of hundreds, "give this Pauline please, for the jacket I had to borrow?"

"Sure thing," he said, tucking it into his huge hand. "You know Alexa’s old locker has a spare uniform, white shirts, black dress, all that you could have just taken?"

"Yeah…I did," I replied deadpan, giving him a raised eyebrow of my own.

He let out another chuckle and said, "risky move there Roc."

"She looked good though, didn't she?" I smiled and said, "worth every cent, I'll take it out of my cut don't worry."

"It's cool, I think your little stunt prompted the birthday boy to put his hand in his pocket."

"It did, didn't it," I replied smiling victoriously. Then the image of his arm around her waist crossed my mind and it dropped away like a stone in a pond, leaving me sullen once more.

Callum watched me silently whilst I counted. I never minded him doing that, it helped me keep focused. I felt bad for giving out his number, to be fair he normally just apologises sweetly and explains he has started seeing someone.

He never entertained non shifting females. He wanted a mate. Which is why he never worked a full moon, I would never do that to him. It would be bittersweet when the day came, one of our trio leaving our little mini-pack.

Meanwhile I, the impulsive flirt that I am, I had to fight every instinct in my mind to keep my mind on the cash before me and not on how those buttons could have yielded under my touch. Instead Selene, what a name by the way, blatantly thinks I’m a pig.

Think of it as a near escape I tell myself. Even though the house won big tonight I felt like one of the losers.

ROCCO I think you've only seen the light, frothy version of me so far during these little interludes. Not today sorry, not in the mood. It had been a shit night, tossing and turning in frustration. Now I’m not saying I never strike out when I approach a potential conquest, date, romantic interest...whatever you want to call it. Not every woman I talk to is meant to be and that's just fine. My annoyance with last night came from a place I didn’t even understand. My wolf, who normally occupies a smaller chunk of my awareness was super fidgety as well which doesn’t help matters. Not like I can just head to the woods and sprint it off in the middle of the city either. We open in a few hours’ time, being a Sunday I’m not expecting big things so it’s just me running the show. Probably just a few regulars, some of the bigger fish. Often, it’s recently separated men, out to resolve some issues by splurging. I’ve never done that. I’m more likely to have a one-

  • Fighting Fate   Chapter 9 – Suite Relief

SELENE Dragging my bag down the street I raged at myself, so many stupid decisions in succession. Leaving my bag at the club was the big one, so distracted by Jax and Rocco that I had to wake Troy up to let me in and pay the cab fare like a sneaking teenager. Error number two, massively offending Rocco by suggesting he had rifled through my things.Error three, looking into those dark eyes of his again. Dressed in just a white shirt and pants, sleeves rolled up and suit jacket flung over a chair he looked damn good. The whiteness of his shirt made that olive skin of his pop, his defined muscles easier to see with the jacket removed. That's two days in a row I've left that casino with soaking wet panties and zero satisfaction. It was too delicious a sight to take in and my attempt to be cold and business like fell away like ashes in the breeze. I do not know why but pissing him off and hearing the harsher edge of his ri

  • Fighting Fate   Chapter 10 - New Desk Please

TWO WEEKS LATER ROCCO I consider myself fully dusted down and bounced back. Yes, it took me a couple of days but the familiar jolly, roguish Rocco is back in the building. It came to a bit of a head, both Jacob and Callum said they were worried about me. I couldn’t say why, because the reason was so flimsy. I've overcome a hell of a lot worse in my time, not that I dwell. My jack-in-a-box mind normally takes care of that Miserable and quick tempered because an arrogant female shifter thought I’d hit on her friend and gone through her bag? Pathetic. They told me to take some time off, go and get myself a date and let off some steam. I can’t lie, I wanted nothing more than to get down and dirty, rough, and hard with a woman who knew what she wanted. I know I’d have felt a hundred times better, for a couple of hours anyway. You know exactly what I mean, when you’re dazed, sweating and panting, ever

  • Fighting Fate   Chapter 11 - Mr Valence is Waiting

ROCCO Be proud of me here, I didn’t go charging in demanding to be seen. I didn't take a big bunch of flowers or an invitation to dinner. I am going to play her at her own cold game. I spent at least an hour pondering my next move. Admittedly fifty-eight minutes of it were spent trying to get hold of Callum to get his buy-in for the Alpha’s new venture. Business partners or hostages he'd grimly joked. A good portion of my time was spent fending off jokes from Jacob about the disgusting state of my office too. I ordered the new desk by the way.But here we are a week later, I have a clean, spunk-free desk and a suit made for seducing on. Fabulous. Getting up at a decent hour in the morning was a trial instead of my usual lazy lie-in but such sacrifices must be made sometimes. I went for a deep navy, almost black suit, white crisp shirt and a matching navy tie. The Godiva Corporate Entertainment office was as soulless and predictable as one would expect.

  • Fighting Fate   Chapter 12 - Do we have a deal?

SELENEThere was no way to know it was him. Fuck my life sideways, upside down and back again when I walked out of that lift.He looked like a dream. That navy suit and tie was just what I loved a man to wear. His dark eyes looked me up and down and I knew he liked what he saw. A rush of excitement flooded straight to my panties and I just about managed to pick my jaw off the floor. It was getting increasingly hard to stick to my zero shifter policy. Not when he looked at me with those coffe-coloured eyes. So rich and warm I keep getting lost in them.So of course I made a shitty remark about the scotch. Standard pushing people away instinct. But he seems to enjoy the challenge, especially given the fact he looked at my lips for way too long.

  • Fighting Fate   Chapter 13 - Diamonds and Cigar Boxes

SELENE“Honestly you should have heard Jax all afternoon,” I moaned to Troy as he sat on the end of my bed. His long brown hair fell down to his shoulders and his green eyes squinted at me as I put on some red lipstick.“You don’t need that shade,” he groaned, “it’s too much, I keep telling you.”“Just because you’re gay doesn’t mean you know everything about fashion you know. It doesn’t go hand in hand with liking guys,” I smirked, ignoring him as I applied the final touches.“I'm an expert on you, not fashion. You know that dress is going to wreck this guy. I’m very proud of myself to be honest,” he mocked as he lay back onto my mattress and looked up at the ceiling.

  • Fighting Fate   Chapter 14 - That Dress

ROCCO "Rocco, you need to play it straight with this one," Jacob urged. "What do you mean?" I replied, delicately balancing a coconut and a bottle of ten thousand dollar vodka like a bloody magician. "You like her. So don't do anything too clever," he said. "Is this an intervention in my love life?" I huffed, ignoring their smirks. "You know what he means," Callum chipped in, "I know you think it's no consequence but you are hung up on this one. How many floozies have you turned down since she came in that time" "At least a dozen," Jacob helpfully chimed in. I only grunted and pretended to be too busy with my arrangement.

  • Fighting Fate   Chapter 15 - Can I ask you something?

ROCCOMy kiss was returned just as greedily. Suit jacket clenched tightly in her fists, jerking me forward.I had one hand on her bare back, revelling in the softness of her skin. Tingling electric followed my hand as it felt up and down keeping her close to me. My other hand was bunched into her hair, twirling blonde curls.I was sunk. Utterly sunk by this gorgeous woman. I moved to kiss her neck as she tilted her head sideways and let out a little sigh of pleasure. My blood racing like an express train, my roving hand trailed down her back and found her round, peachy ass. I couldn't help squeezing it, like a helpless moth to a flame."No panties, what are you doing to me?" I groaned into her neck."It's all your

SELENEI don't know how much of the wedding I've got cemented in my memory. I'll never forget his face though. The way his expression changed when our eyes met. He was already looking handsome, that dark blue colour my favourite of his suits. He didn't break out into a goofy smile or make any silly gestures like I've seen at other weddings. He just watched and took me in. His eyes never left mine, just dark, intense and brooding as he studied my approach. Knowing how intensely he was watching made my skin crackle. The matching vows was too insane for words. Our wolves were in sync, content and happy being reunited after a day apart. The meal with Rocco and Jacob was great fun too. We laughed and drank the night away.He loved my present of the string quarter, and I adored my flowers. I had one extra present for him. I slid a wrapped watch box over to him as we finished our cake and champagne.Rocco and Troy watched on in curiosity as he opened it and burst out in

  • Fighting Fate   Chapter 62 - Full House, Full Heart

TWO WEEKS LATERROCCOWhen we first started these pleasant little chats I would never have guessed where we would end.To be specific, well actually…can you guess? I'm in a very smart navy blue suit, white open shirt. I have an exotic hot pink orchid pinned to my lapel by a ridiculously over excited Troy.Jacobs is in a matching suit, Troy is in a white linen suit. He's already strutted in, declared he's too hot for this drama and just wants to get to the bar. Yet I know he's joking. He's already pulled me to one side and told me Selene is the only bit of his heart that doesn't belong to Jacob.Yes. You're here for my wedding. My bride is going to walk down the aisle any minute. I picked the flowers. Driving the long, winding way to Florida we had a blast. So many random towns, restaurants, mind blowing views and funny locals. By the time we arrived in Florida the plans were set. We would be married on the end of the pier at sunset. Its shit for photos

  • Fighting Fate   Chapter 61 - Selene’s Showdown

SELENEI had to drag my ass in to work this morning. Not because I was unsure about quitting but leaving Rocco alone in my bed was torture to my soul.I am so pleased my idea to head to the boardwalk paid off. He is the sweetest yet strongest guy I've ever met. And we're engaged too. What the hell. And we're going to be millionaires. It's insane. It's weird how synchronised we are despite the differences in our personality. All the way home we talked about different business ideas and locations. The actual getting married we both agree will be something low key and simple. We both want Jacob and Troy there but apart from that I'm not too bothered what we do.Life is just getting started. As my heels click along the floor to Godiva for the last time I notice how run down the reception is. Like a few days away makes you notice everything with fresh eyes. I smiled to myself as I took the lift, as I had done everything time since that Rocco snared me in it.I th

ROCCO Selene taking me out for dinner, she's humming a happy little tune, she's absolutely plotting something. It's around four in the afternoon but she's itching to get away. I find myself watching her fluttering about, filling a bag with soda and chips. She wasn't planning a regular outing to a restaurant and I waited for her to notice me. She wore a gorgeous teal tunic dress and leggings. Her blonde curls were loose and wavy, framing that pretty heart-shaped face. Her hazel eyes had a sparkle, she was loving having a little surprise for me and it made my heart surge. "Do I need to take anything?" "If you can find me the car keys then were good to go," she smiled. Back in the lamborghini once more she took the wheel and I sat back as she sped off, the city soon a distant outline on the horizon. For once I wasn't on the road to Silverlake, not that I watched the road too much. My eyes, urged by my wolf pushed me to keep taking a mental picture o

  • Fighting Fate   Chapter 59 - Jackets and Pencil Skirt

SELENE My wolf snickered in delight as her cheeky little plan worked. I'd been quickly sifting through my wardrobe looking for an appropriate "resigning from my job with no intention to work any leave" outfit when the black velvet jacket glinted. I'd always wondered what he would have done that first night if Jax and Greg hadn't inadvertently ruined the moment. Why not find out my wolf had purred and I quickly found the matching black pencil skirt from the same evening. His face lit up when he saw me. His apartment was exactly as I expected, grey and sterile. Rocco put all of his soul into his casino, not a cosy home life. It also meant when he pulled me to him, surrounded by all that grey and metal it felt like I was back in that changing room all over again. "So what was your plan, that night?" "Hmm, the first time you wore this?" I nodded as he took my hand and lead me over to his kitchen island. "Well…I was already disappointed you hadn't

  • Fighting Fate   Chapter 58 - Time for a Change

ROCCO One of the amazing things about having Selene for a mate - she is one clever, clever cookie. Arter a very long sleep together in her huge bed its afternoon before I phone Jacob to get his buy in on the new plan. Those guys were already in Florida enjoying the beach. Selene was tapping away on her laptop I'm the crowd of my arm composing her resignation letter. I didn't ask about that just yet. More pressing issues right now like the fact I'm probably a wanted man after that shootout. It was time to give Johnny Deco a call. It may seem like a suicide move and it probably is. Considering the easy mob hit and safe full of drugs turned into a gunslinger firefight with duffel bags full of washing powder i doubt he wants to chat. "Rocco, you've got some balls to be phoning me," he growled lowly. "Johnny, hear me out, I've got the solution for us both just tell me where you meet you. Your terms, no games here." Silence greeted my effort. It was alw

  • Fighting Fate   Chapter 57 - New Wheels, New Dreams

SELENE It all feels too natural, so relaxed. Stood on the porch with Roccos strong hand around my waist, his thumb softly stroking the inside curve of my side. The raging fireworks of the heat period had been replaced with a gentle hum of connection. It didn't stop me craving him though. From the porch I could see the three covered bodies in the town square. Real life is waiting for us alongside this absolute disaster. Troy managed to lighten the mood at least, "darling there's been a bloodbath I don't think showtunes are going to be required " looking at my navy and white polka dress with disdain. "Thank you Troy," I said earnestly, "I owe you one." He rolled his eyes, "just never ever lose your phone again and I'm happy." The town was buzzing with gossip. This was the most dramatic thing to happen in our pack for twenty years. It meant nothing to me though. None of us had fought for the Silverlake Pack. We had fought for each other. To overcome

  • Fighting Fate   Chapter 56 – Rearranging and Changing

ROCCO Well, shit a brick that was intense. It’s so intense that I’m lying on teenage Selene’s bed, knowing she’s in the shower and I can’t even bring myself to go and interrupt her. I’m kind of frozen, my jaw clenched tightly as flashbacks run riot through my mind. Teeth, fur, blood and throat cold feeling of stone cobbles assault my senses. There is too much to sort out. I’m feeling overwhelmed. Callum’s dead body is in the casino cellar. I’ve killed the Alpha of a pack, realistically there should be a mob baying for my head on a stick. I nearly lost Selene. I think that’s what’s upsetting me more than anything. The guilt of losing Callum and being only minutes away from losing Selene has turned my stomach, every organ in my body upside down. Then its kicked them into a blender and minced me. The water stops and Selene steps out of the shower and I need to make a choice. Do I confide…or pretend to be okay, slap on a cheeky Rocco mask and mak

  • Fighting Fate   Chapter 55 – The Battle for Selene

SELENE I knew it was Rocco the instant I saw his brown fur, his brown eyes met mine and my wolf leapt up in my chest. I must have looked terrifying with my blonde hair all crazy and wild, pale, shivering and locked in a cage. But he was here. Whatever Jimmy had tried to do to him he had escaped. Hah, fuck you Jimmy I thought briefly. That was before Alpha Wicknace made his garbled speech and flung an axe. Now I’m watching my mate fight for his life. Troy is here too, my heart melted when I saw he was there, he truly is the best friend I could ever wish for. How can nobody else in this town be fighting for me? How are they all stood around watching these six wolves tear themselves apart and stand there. Pathetic, the lot of them. When I see Rocco and Wicknace going at it my wolf is in agony. I want to help, I need to shift and take part, help my mate. I wave and gesture at Pen and Marie who are stood close, “get the keys” I mouth, pointing at the discarded pa
