Chapter 33

As I pull up to Cheryl’s parents' house, I glance over at her in the passenger seat. She’s been quiet the whole drive, staring out the window, lost in thought. The streetlights cast a soft glow on her face, but I can still see the worry etched into her features. I hate leaving her like this, but she’s safer here with her family—safer than anywhere else right now.

“I’ll call you as soon as I figure something out,” I say, trying to sound reassuring. “Just stay here and keep your phone close.” Swallowing the unease creeping up my spine. “Just…stay safe.”

She hesitates for a moment, then leans over to kiss me on the cheek. “You too.”

I watch as she gets out of the car and walks up the driveway to her parents’ house, waiting until she’s inside before I drive off.
