Amber did not expect the place they went to. It was not a regular expensive restaurant. It was a fine dining restaurant on a yacht. She saw some diners who were dressed elegantly. She thought when Devlin mentioned dinner, it was just a regular dinner at an expensive restaurant. Not this kind of set-up. This is more like a dream dinner date for her.
“Are you meeting someone else here?’ she asked curiously. She had never been to a place like this before, and even going to an expensive restaurant was a rarity for her.
“No, I am not meeting no one except you.” A waiter came to them and guided them to a sliding door where their VIP section is located. It is interesting how she can see the other diners from their stained glass wall.
“This is very nice. I’ve never been to a place like this. Isn’t this too much for a dinner meeting? I thought we would go to a regular restaurant.” She said candidly while looking around the spacious VIP room that Devlin reserved for them.
“I am glad you like it. This is the best place where we could discuss things. Anyway, we should take our order first before anything else.” He simply declared. Immediately, the waiter gave them the menu for their order.
Amber only ordered salad while the rest of their food was ordered by Devlin. She doesn’t even recognize the name of some food on the menu. So, she asked him to order for her instead. They didn’t wait long for their food to get served. They had a sumptuous meal of seafood which included seafood chowder soup, shrimp and vegetable salad, steamed asparagus, and baked scallops. For their main dish, they had the sizzling grilled lobster and salmon steak. Amber’s mouth turned watery as she stared at all the delicious food served on their table.
“This is too much for two people.” She chuckled. She actually felt hungry when she smelled the grilled lobster. They had white wine to go with their food. Amber was enjoying the dinner. Devlin would casually ask her about her life on the farm.
“Last time we went there, your grandma served a very delicious lunch. I was amazed that the food was all organic straight from your farm.” Devlin said while he took a sip of his wine. Amber could only nod at him as she was still busy gobbling her food. She had to drink a glass of water before replying to him.
“Most of our food is fresh from the farm.” She said fondly while thinking of her marmee and everyone in the farm at that moment. She feels relaxed now that they are talking about something she is comfortable discussing.
“That’s great! I am a city guy. I never lived on a farm but it would be great to have one. I think farming can be a good business if you handle it well.” He spoke enthusiastically over the subject of farming. Amber wonders how someone like him could handle a farm life. She could not even imagine Devlin doing some farming work. She almost laughed at her crazy idea. She just could not picture him in the farm at all.
“Well, for someone who never lived in the rural area and experienced the farm life, then it may be hard for you. And if you plan to run a farm for business, you need to have someone you can trust to oversee the operation of the whole farm. Our farm is small. It is enough to support our basic needs including the workers who work with us.” Listening to Amber right now impressed Devlin. She may be naive but she definitely got a good head over running a business. And she is hard working, too. Well, she is not the usual woman he goes out with or those women he meets during board meetings. She is simple yet if given a chance, she can be a good businesswoman.
They did not notice the time since they got busy talking. When their desserts were served, Amber realized that they have not discussed anything yet about the marriage.
“Uhmm… maybe we should discuss why I am here. I also don’t want to take much of your time and abuse your hospitality. After our conversation tonight, I will leave first thing tomorrow morning. Thank you very much for everything by the way.” Devlin tried hard to hide his annoyance. He does not like the direction of their conversation. He has other plans in his head.
“Why are you leaving so soon? I mean there is still that promise we made to our grandmothers, our marriage.” He said casually while Amber’s eyes popped out wide. How can he discuss marriage so casually?
“I don’t think we have an issue about that. I just want to hear your thoughts about it for my peace of mind. I am sure you also don’t want to do the marriage thing. It is my conscience that is nagging me to go with the marriage since I made a promise to your grandmother.” Amber said honestly. Devlin was looking intently at her. He is right about her. She is really naive and even a nice person.
“I have a suggestion. Why don’t you stay for a bit more so we can also know each other better? I mean, ever since I heard about you, grandma did not stop talking about you. I felt like I wanted to know you further.” Devlin is already doing his sweet talks so he can convince her to stay. He needs her. He does not think that she would get harmed with his plans. She just needs to be with him so Raven would take notice that he is dating someone else different. Maybe it will get her attention this time.
“Huh? I am sorry but I don't get it. We are not going to get married so there is no use for me to stay here.” She said with a serious tone. She can just leave and continue with her life.
“Well, our grandmothers are great friends. Don’t you think it would be nice if we try to get to know each other as friends as well?” Amber was quiet for a few minutes. There is nothing wrong with being friends with him. But he is a male and staying in his place would give a different impression to others. Maybe she can move out or something.
“Your idea is good but I also have to be with my marmee.” Amber mentioned her marmee for the first time which made Devlin confused.
“Marmee?” He asked with his forehead slightly wrinkled.
“Oh… that’s my endearment for my grandmother. I called her, marmee.” She smiled with fondness.
“You are also close to your grandmother just like I am. I grew up with her as my parents were too busy with their work.” Devlin shared a bit of his life. Maybe Amber will warm up to him. He was not mistaken. He immediately saw her looking sad, then smiled to comfort him.
“I am sorry to hear that.” She said gently. Then, she took a deep breath before she continued talking. “I lived with my marmee after my dad died when I was six. A year later, my mom remarried and moved in with her new husband. My mother brought me with her but I didn’t get along well with his husband’s kids. I begged my mom that I will stay with marmee. She agreed at the end.” She said positively. If there is one thing more interesting about Amber, she has that positive outlook in life despite what she’s been through, Devlin noted.
“Please stay for a few more days or even weeks. And by the way, I already called your marmee yesterday to check on her. I also asked her permission if you could stay longer and she agreed. I just want to tour you around here. I was not able to be with you since I got busy from work. What do you think?” Devlin suddenly asked her which made her confused.
“What do I think? I am sorry I got lost with what you are saying. You mentioned so many things at once.” She heard Devlin chuckled softly. When she looked at him, she couldn’t help but stare at his handsome face for a while. He has this magnetic effect on her. She can’t for a few seconds avoid staring at him.
“Do I have dirt on my face?” Amber choked since she didn’t expect him to notice. He was checking something on his phone so she stared at him for a long time.
Immediately, Devlin stood up and tapped her back. He also handed her a glass of water.
‘So, you have a sweet tooth. You quickly ate your dessert, that's why you choke. Have more water.” He poured sparkling water in her glass. She is glad that he did not notice why she choked.
“So, tomorrow I am free. Do you want to go somewhere? I have some nice places in mind that we can check.” Amber had no choice but to stay. He already asked permission from her grandmother and she approved it. She didn’t even tell her anything.
Anyway, he was very nice to suggest that they should know each other and be friends. Although, she still thinks it is not a good idea especially that she finds him really attractive. She had to shake her head. She keeps losing her mind every time she stares at him. That is not good. From their conversation tonight, they silently agreed to be friends. She should put away any crazy thoughts in her head. He is just being nice and friendly. She wonders how he is with his girlfriend. She almost forgot that aside from being a young billionaire, he is also a notorious playboy.
“I honestly have no clue where to go. Whatever you have in mind, I think that is interesting.” She said while smiling at him. Devlin also smiled back at her, satisfied with her answer.
“Then, it is settled. Tomorrow, I will pick you up from the condo around 9 am. Is that good?” Again, his spellbinding smile is hard to resist.
“Yes, that is a good time. But please, let’s not go to places like this. It is too lavish and grand. I like to go somewhere simple like the park or anything outdoors.” She said shyly. She prefers to be in a simple setting, one that she is comfortable with. If they didn’t stay in the VIP section far away from the other diners, she could have felt more uncomfortable. Thankfully, Devlin was thoughtful enough to bring her to this secluded section.
“No problem. There are so many nice places you can visit here. And thank you for being honest. I admire that you are honest enough to indirectly tell me that you felt uncomfortable here.” Devlin was toying with his fork while talking to her.
“Oh no, please don’t get me wrong. I am not just comfortable in places like this. I am used to the simple life back on the farm.” She said sincerely. Deep inside Devlin, he admires her simplicity and sincerity.
They talked further after dinner. They even ordered some tea before they decided to call it a night.
Devlin drove her back to the condo. While in the car, he played some relaxing music. Amber admires the choice of music he plays. It goes with her taste. That’s a good start for their friendship.
While Amber is listening to the music, Devlin is busy with his own thoughts. He is glad that it was not hard to convince Amber to stay. Tomorrow, he is going to make sure that Raven will see them together. He knows where to find her tomorrow. He is going to make sure to bring Amber with him. He immediately glanced at her who was listening intently to the music with eyes closed. She is definitely something. It is interesting that he enjoyed their time tonight.
He has to stop his line of thoughts. There is Raven that he is trying to win back. Hopefully all his plans would work out. But why does a pair of beautiful gray eyes keep distracting his thoughts…
Hi readers? How is it going so far? I hope you could provide some feedback with my first published story here. Thank you for your time reading. Enjoy!
Amber could not believe that she had to stay for a few more days. She was firm in her decision earlier to leave his condo. But just like that…Devlin convinced her to stay. If her marmee did not agree, she would have been getting ready to pack now. She could not sleep immediately. She keeps thinking of what happened during dinner. Devlin was the complete opposite from her first encounter with him. He was acting as the best gentleman. She can’t deny that she was really impressed the moment she saw him walking inside the condo with his black suit. Then, he brought her to a place beyond what she could imagine for a casual dinner. And their conversations were very light and relaxing. The most surprising part was he wanted to be friends with her. She doesn't know why he decided to do that although she likes the idea. She must admit that she sees him more than just a friend. A lot of women admire him for his looks. She is no different from those women except she promised his grandmother
“Devlin? What are you doing here?” Asked the tall, beautiful lady who passed by them. Amber was a few meters away from them. She distanced herself further so she would give them some privacy. She must be his friend. “Raven! Nice to see you. I am doing well. What about you? I didn’t see you during the funeral.” Devlin casually asked his ex-girlfriend. She is so beautiful wearing her white bandage dress that perfectly shows off her body. Amber noticed how he looked at her. She could see great admiration from his face for the woman. She felt a slight pain in her chest from what she had just witnessed. “I was actually there. Didn’t Dalton tell you? I came late but I also left quickly. There was an emergency.” Raven said regretfully. She did not say what the emergency was. “So, who are you with?” She asked and suddenly looked at Amber. Devlin urged Amber to come to him by extending his hand. “This is Amber Adams, she is a very special friend.” Devlin said while beaming. Amber looked a
Devlin woke up nursing a hangover. He had too many drinks last night. He was at the bar past 5 pm. He did not exactly remember how he got home. He just remembers Jackson calling him on the phone, mentioning Amber. Thinking of her right now, he felt a bit bad that he left her all by herself. He did not come back for her. He went to the kitchen and made his own cup of coffee. He is in his bachelor’s pad right now. He must have been dead drunk last night for not remembering anything. There is only Jackson whom he thought would surely bring him home. Only Jackson knows, his trusted right hand about his houses. This was the closest place that Jackson could take him. He has three houses. He got the bachelor’s pad, the condo unit where Amber is staying and he has a huge mansion. He only has the maids there. That would be his house for his family in the future. Suddenly, he thought about Raven and what she told him yesterday. He felt so defeated yesterday hearing what Raven said to him,
They ended up watching an action comedy movie together. That was the only movie that would meet their movie preferences. Devlin likes action films while Amber is into rom-com movies. So, they decided to meet halfway. “Thank you for today. It was really nice. I hope you had fun.” Devlin said while she was at the door to the condo unit. She only smiled at him. “No, thanks to you. I had a great time.” “Hmmm… do you want a cup of coffee?” She said after a few moments. “Sure, that would be great!” Devlin replied without hesitation. He followed Amber inside while she put her purse on the center table in the living room. She went to the kitchen and turned on the coffee maker. Devlin followed her to the kitchen as well. “How do you like your coffee? Do you want it with milk?” Amber asked while she was preparing. “Black coffee is good.” He was looking at what Amber was doing which made her slightly nervous. She does not want to screw up things in front of him. Good thing that Devlin st
“Smile…we’ve just started.” Devlin told her and to her surprise, held her hand tightly. Together, they went to their assigned table. Immediately, the cameras were flashing at them until they reached their table. Amber tried to whisper to Devlin to loosen her grip on her hand but he just held it more tightly.. She could not do anything to avoid the attention. Instead, she put her head down at least to hide herself from those cameras. The attention she got tonight is making her anxious. She does not understand everything that Devlin did. “What was that? Why did you tell them that I am your date? I don’t understand what you are doing.” Came her questions in a low voice. What Devlin did just made her the center of attention from those reporters. “Just relax. Stay with me all the time and you will be just fine. They will not bother you.” Devlin is known to date a lot of women but he never answered any questions from the reporters regarding those women he dated. It is actually those women
It’s a sunny Saturday morning. For the first time, Amber decided to go out of the condo to do some jogging. She does not need to inform Jackson of her whereabouts anyway. Devlin already told her that she can get out whenever she wants to. She feels great to smell the fresh morning dew. She is now at a park, just jogging around. She checks her wristwatch and it is forty minutes past 5 am. She has been jogging for almost half an hour now. She decided to take a break at the nearest bench she could find. The place is almost empty at this time. She has the luxury to enjoy the view of the park all by herself. Her mind wanders as to what happened last night. She thought of Devlin and Raven. Based on what she understood from last night’s conversations from the guests, she assumed that Raven is in a relationship with someone else. She realized the reason why Devlin has that sad look on his face every time he looks at Raven. Amber has never been in a relationship but she is not that naive
“Good afternoon, Attorney Harrison.” Devlin greeted his grandmother’s lawyer the moment he saw him in his office. He wonders whether he is working today. He is such a workaholic man despite his age. “Good afternoon, Mr. Wesley. How are you doing? Please take a seat.” Smiled the aging Attorney Harrison. He is just a decade younger than his grandma. When Devlin’s grandfather was still alive, Attorney Harrison used to work for him as his personal lawyer. His grandfather was a very successful real estate developer. It was also Attorney Harrison who read the last will of his grandfather a few weeks after he died. His grandmother took the bulk of his wealth with almost all of his real estate properties as her inheritance. Devlin’s dad was also given some properties like the beach house and some apartments. Both Devlin and his older brother were given some parcels of land. Despite all the wealth her grandmother got, she lived a very simple life. Devlin knew that she also took good care of
“Hello Devlin…” Amber hesitated a bit. But she wants to cook a nice dinner for him before she goes home to her marmee. That is the only way she thinks she could repay his kindness towards her. She waited for Devlin to say something but the other line was quiet except the background sound of cars honking. He must be driving somewhere. “Devlin, can you hear me? I am not sure what you are doing but do you want me to hang up?” It took Colton a full minute to respond to Amber. She could hear his deep breathing. “Yeah, don’t hang up. I’m here. I just had to do something.” He lied. He is actually seething with anger right now. He blamed Amber for everything. Had she not met his grandma that day on her appointment at the hospital, he wouldn't get entangled with this mess. His grandma would have not made that drastic decision if she hadn’t been very sick. Amber’s appearance could have reminded his grandma of her wish to marry someone from her family to her friend, Amelia’s bloodline. Devli
Two months had passed since they found out that she was pregnant and Amber had been living in sheer bliss. She had nothing but praise for her husband who had been extraordinarily loving, patient, and understanding with her throughout this period. In the past two months, so many significant events have unfolded. First, Devlin’s father and brother were both acquitted of their cases. It was uncovered that everything had been orchestrated by Harrison. Then, Raven gave birth to a healthy baby boy, filling their lives with so much joy. At marmee’s request, they visited Harrison in jail. Despite the problems he had caused, Amber held hope that he would eventually find the peace he had long been searching for. In her heart, she had already forgiven him, and Devlin shared the same sentiment. Harrison broke down when he saw Amelia after several decades. His initial intention had been to see her before he discovered that Amber was her granddaughter. It was Olivia who told him that Amelia has
Two weeks later, Devlin rushed towards the entrance of the emergency room. “Where is my wife, Amber Wesley?” He anxiously inquired of a passing nurse on his way to the emergency room.“This way, sir,” the nurse replied, her voice filled with reassurance. “How is she doing? Is she alright?” He hadn’t had the chance to ask marmee earlier when he received her frantic call from his office. She had only mentioned that Amber was bleeding, and he couldn’t make out the rest of what marmee had tried to convey. Without hesitation, he had left his office and sprinted to the hospital where his wife was. “Sir, the doctor will provide you with an update shortly.” The nurse led him to a curtained area. There, he saw his wife lying on a hospital bed, with marmee appearing deeply worried by her side.“Marmee, what happened?” He rushed to her side, wrapping his arms around her in a tight embrace. Then, he turned his attention to Amber, who managed to give him a weak smile. “She slipped on the floor
Amber and marmee were busy preparing the table for dinner. They had just finished cooking, with the head cook and maids lending a hand. The kitchen was filled with the aroma of delicious dishes, and the table was adorned with an array of culinary delights. It was a feast fit for a celebration. “I am so glad I learned something great from the family who adopted me.” Amelia said out of the blue. Growing up with a family who enjoyed cooking, she was able to learn their special family recipes and now she can pass it all to her granddaughter. “I am happy for you, marmee. I definitely learned a lot of things from you.” Amber went to hug her grandmother. Then, marmee went on to say something while looking at her granddaughter with a twinkle in her eye. “Tonight’s dinner feels more like a celebration for both you and Devlin,” she remarked with a sly grin, then added, “ Maybe ‘it’s time for you to start working on my great-grandchild, dear.” Devlin, standing nearby, couldn’t help but chime
Amber was lounging by the pool when she felt a tender kiss on her forehead. It was, of course, none other than her husband, Devlin. He had left early in the morning, promising to return for lunch, and true to his word, he had.“Hey babe, what are you doing here all alone? Where’s marmee?” Devlin’s gaze swept the area, noting that only a few bodyguards were roaming around. He had purged their security detail after the recent incident. “Oh marmee? She went out for grocery shopping. She insisted on preparing dinner tonight,” Amber replied. She had urged her grandmother earlier to leave the grocery shopping to the maids, but it seemed marmee was too restless to do nothing. She had grown accustomed to life on the farm. “That’s fine, babe. They will help marmee in cooking.” Devlin was referring to the head cook and the maids. “Besides, we have visitors coming tonight.” Amber looked at Devlin with curiosity.“It’s Agent Smith and Abby. I know you've been eager to hear about what happened.
Amber awoke in an unfamiliar, white room. Her confusion mounted as she struggled to recall why she was there. Suddenly, a rush of memories flooded her mind. It became evident that she was in a hospital room. She scanned her surroundings but found no one present. She didn’t have to wait long though as Devlin soon entered the room, a warm smile on his face. He had just stepped out to collect some homemade food prepared by their head cook, along with a selection of fresh fruits.“Hey, baby, I’m glad you’re awake now. Is everything okay?” he asked, crossing the room to embrace his wife who wore a troubled look. Amber tried to sit up but winced in pain.“Take it easy, please. Your body is still recovering.” He helped Amber sit up more comfortably.“I am okay, just a bit sore.” Amber said, trying to smile to reassure her husband. “How long have I slept for?” She got curious since she remembered that it was in the morning when that incident happened. However, she could see that it was still
Inside the mansion, Attorney Harrison and Amber slowly descended the grand staircase with a heavy silence hanging over them. Amber’s heart raced, anxiety coursing through her veins. She faltered on the last step, her trembling legs betraying her. “Don’t make any stupid moves,” Attorney Harrison hissed, his grip on her tightening. “You’re my only ticket out of this hellhole.”Amber scanned the room as they moved forward, her eyes catching the hushed movements of the police officers who were waiting to the sides, giving way for them to exit. The tension in the air was evident, everyone keenly aware of the volatile situation. Every step was a careful calculation, every decision weighed against the risk of the hostage getting hurt.Amber’s gaze locked onto Abby and Agent Smith, standing off to the side but poised with their guns. Their expressions etched with worry and determination. Amber couldn’t help but wonder where Devlin was in all of this chaos, her mind racing with unanswered qu
“I am deeply sorry for the pain you’ve endured, Attorney Harrison. Regrettably, we cannot change what happened in the past. I hope you can eventually find it in your heart to forgive. I am genuinely willing to help you in any way I can. Please, spare Devlin and his family from whatever revenge you want to inflict against the Wesleys. Those responsible for your suffering have long since passed away,” Amber implored, hoping to persuade him that revenge wouldn’t lead to any true solace.“Huh! You don’t know what you are talking about. Devlin’s father and brother were cut from the same cloth. His brother, a well-known attorney, had a history of engaging in questionable, under-the-table transactions. Similarly, his father was involved in illicit activities, such as smuggling high-value art pieces and selling them on the black market for exorbitant sums. And you know what I did to them?” He paused with a wild look on his face. Amber was scared but tried to appear calm from the outside.“I r
Amber managed to maintain her composure despite the turbulent thoughts the photo album had stirred within her. She didn’t want Devlin to become even more concerned. With a deep breath, she turned away from her sleeping husband. As they settled into bed, Devlin quickly succumbed to exhaustion, his peaceful slumber an indication of how much he needed rest.Amber couldn’t shake the nagging feeling that those old photographs held a deeper significance in her life that she could fathom. Her grandmother had grown up in an orphanage, and so was Devlin’s grandmother. The realization struck her like a bolt of lightning, causing her to gasp in astonishment.Could it be possible that their guy also spent his early years in the same orphanage as their grandmothers? The mere thought sent her heart racing, and she found it nearly impossible to contain her curiosity.Questions swirled in Amber’s mind. What secrets lay hidden in their shared past that had shaped their ‘guy’ into the man he is right n
After Dalton and Raven left, Devlin received a call from Agent Smith.“Hello, Agent Smith. How’s everything going? How far along are you with the investigation?” Devlin inquired immediately.“I think it’s better for you to come here Mr. Wesley. I have both good news and bad news for you,” Agent Smith’s voice sounded grim.“Oh, alright. I was actually planning to come earlier as soon as we arrived here with my wife. However, we had unexpected guests to take care of,” He didn’t waste time explaining further. He wanted to know exactly what was happening with the investigation.“Is everything alright? You looked so serious,” Amber asked Devlin, who was unusually quiet. “We need to head over to Agent Smith. He has some news about the investigation,” Devlin replied, his expression grave.Amber didn’t waste time on further questions. “Of course. Let’s go find out what’s going on.”They quickly made their way to where Agent Smith and his team were staying. As they entered the room, they coul
