Opening the door to their rooms, Gianna sighed as she was greeted by the sight of Sophia tracing patterns from one of the books that she had found for her. She had said that there were some things that she had found that she wanted to try the next time that they go out. As soon as she heard the door open, Sophia stopped what she was doing and hopped up to hug Gianna.
“You were gone forever,” she said, wrapping her small arms around Gianna’s legs. “What took so long?”
“Keres was telling us about another plan of his,” Gianna said, wrinkling her nose. “What are you drawing over there,” she asked, nodding toward the book and paper that Sophia had just abandoned.
“I am practicing for when we go to the woods again. Can we go tonight,” Sophia asked hopefully.
“Umm..I’m not sure it will safe tonight to try sneaking out. Let’s try tomorrow night. I think I made Keres very mad today, so he might try having us watched or something,” Gianna admitted softly. “I will look tonight, and if everything is clear we can go tomorrow night. Deal?”
“You mean like the last time he came here,” Sophia asked.
“Possibly,” Gianna said with a nod. “But I do not want you to worry about Keres. Okay? I promise to make it up to you though and take you to the woods again as soon as possible. Deal?”
Nodding happily Sophia skipped back to her book and drawings. “How do you say this,” she asked, pointing to a word at the top of the page she had been tracing earlier.
Walking over and sitting by Sophia on the floor, Gianna took the book. “Are you asking about this word,” she said pointing to the top of the page.
Sophia nodded her head.
“It says protection,” Gianna said with her brow furrowing. “Do you feel like someone wants to hurt you?” Sophia had a way of knowing when things would happen sometimes. Maybe she knew that someone was going to try to kill her. Would Keres really try to have a child killed? Gianna suspected that he had a part in his father’s death, but did not have any way to prove her suspicions.
“No,” Sophia said, shaking her head.
“Then why do you want to learn this one,” Gianna pressed.
“They told me to learn it,” Sophia said with her eyes welling up with tears. “Are you mad at me?”
“No. No, I’m sorry,” Gianna said, pulling her sister in for a hug. “I’m not mad at you. I just wanted to make sure that you feel safe here. You know that I would do anything to protect you, right” Gianna asked, looking down at Sophia in her lap. She waited a few seconds till she saw Sophia nod her head. Letting out a deep breath she pulled her sister into another hug and waited a minute before asking, “So who told you to learn this one?”
Sophia sat back and scrunched up her face while trying to put into words why she needed to learn this symbol. “I hear voices in here,” she said pointing to her head. “They tell me how to do things, and sometimes they tell me things to learn.”
“How do you know that they wanted you to learn this picture,” Gianna asked pointing to the one on the page just below the word protection.
Sophia shrugged. “I turn the pages till they feel right or they tell me to stop.”
“Oh, okay,” Gianna said, but not fully understanding. Remembering that Sophia does seem to have a natural way of knowing how to do things, maybe she does have an intuition or voices that are guiding her. “Will you let me know if you ever feel like you are not safe here or if the voices tell you that you are not safe here?”
Gianna hoped that she was wrong, but in her heart she knew that Keres had something to do with his father’s death. Maybe it was her wolf that made her more intuitive or helped her to pick up on certain signs. One thing that Gianna did know was that if Keres was willing to have his own father killed to become king, what would stop him from trying to harm Sophia if he considers her a threat?
“Yes,” Sophia said looking confused. “Are we not safe here?”
“I think so,” Gianna said carefully, not wanting to scare her sister. “I just never want to chance anything happening to you. I just love you too much,” she said, smiling.
“I love you too.”
“You know what else I love,” Gianna asked, smiling mischievously.
“What,” Sophia asked excitedly.
“I love tickling you,” Gianna cried as she began tickling Sophia. “The tickle monster is going to get you!” Sophia laughed and shrieked trying to escape from the tickle monster.
Several minutes later they were both panting laying on the rug in their sitting room. Gianna was laying on her back thinking about what they should have for dinner when Sophia propped up on her elbows and looked at her. Gianna turned her head toward her sister so that she could see her.
“I will always protect you,” Sophia said in a much older sounding voice. Her eyes appeared glazed over. It was almost as if she was looking past Gianna.
“What do you mean,” Gianna asked, sitting up with her brow furrowing.
Sophia blinked for a second and then shrugged. “I don’t know,” she said and then got up. She began looking through her book again till she found the page that she had been on earlier. Sophia began humming happily and tracing the image from the page again.
That was weird Gianna thought to herself. Sophia has said weird things before, but this time she couldn’t help but feel like something was going to happen. Maybe she was reading too much into what her sister said, but with her argument with Keres still fresh, Gianna decided to make sure that she stayed alert and do a little snooping. She would wait for Sophia to go to sleep tonight and walk around to see if she could hear anything. There had to be a reason that she was this concerned. Hopefully she will learn something tonight.
Gianna looked at the clock on the night table beside her bed and saw that it was almost 11:30 PM. Time to go see if Keres has anyone watching their rooms. Sophia should be asleep pretty deeply by now Gianna thought as she slowly slid out of her bed trying not to make too much noise. Tiptoeing over to her sister’s bed, Gianna was greeted by the sounds of her sister's soft snores. With a smile she pulled the blanket back up to Sophia’s shoulders and then slowly crept to the door of their bedroom to slip out into their living room. She pulled the door softly closed behind her and made her way over to the simple dress that she had worn earlier today. Normally, Gianna would have been happy to have worn leggings and t-shirt, but Keres did not allow casual clothing to be worn around him. Women had to wear dresses and men had to wear dress slacks and a button down shirt at minimum. Putting her dress back on from earlier could help her say that she had just accidentally stayed up too late wat
“Wake up,” a little voice pouted. “I’m hungry and we have to leave soon.”“Go away,” Gianna mumbled, snuggling deeper into her pillow. “I just need five more minutes.”“You have said that for the last hour,” the little voice said exasperated. “Get up now,” the voice demanded and Gianna swore she heard the stomp of a foot. “I will. Just give me five more minutes,” Gianna said tiredly. She almost smiled when she heard the sound of footsteps moving away from the bed. Success. Now I can sleep a little more, she thought just as what felt like a wave of ice cold water crashed down onto her soaker her and her bed. Gianna bolted upright with a screech. “What in h-, what in the world Sophia ,” she yelled catching herself as her teeth began to chatter. “Wh-why did y-you pour water on m-me,” she stammered as she got out of her sopping wet bed to stand on the flood dripping by her bed. Her teeth were chattering as she took the towel that Sophia was holding out in offering. “It is almost noon,
Nolan slowly made his way to the spot where they had left the SUV the previous day. Mateo had initially suggested a short run that would only last a few hours, but not long after Nolan shifted, he felt his mate again. Nolan had told Mateo to cancel his afternoon meeting and to reschedule it for later the next day. He had then spent the rest of yesterday afternoon and evening trying to sense his mate again. His patience had finally been rewarded late last evening. He had briefly felt his mate trying to push back her wolf to keep her from emerging. Nolan couldn’t hear exactly what was going on, but he had been able to tell that his mate was very upset and even scared. When his mate was experiencing strong emotions seemed to be when he was able to sense her. The night that she first changed she was nervous and the first shift can hurt. Since she did not know how to control her wolf and emotions he was able to sense her for the first time a little over two years ago. Now, the fact that
Without a moment to spare Gianna hurried herself and Sophia down the hall to the smaller dining room frequently used by the royal family when they were not entertaining. At 12:00 on the dot, Gianna and Sophia stepped into the dining room. “Ah, my dear cousins,” Keres greeted. “I am so glad that you could join me for lunch today.” “It’s our pleasure,” Gianna said with a forced smile and small curtsey. Thankfully she saw Sophia follow her movement out of the corner of her eye. Sophia had been just as upset as Gianna when she learned what Gianna had overheard last night. It had taken a lot to get her to clam down enough to play an oblivious part for this surprise lunch. Keres smiled in acknowledgement of their proper greeting. Waving them over he had one of the waiters pull out the two seats on his left hand side. “Join me. We have much to discuss.” If only you knew how much we would like to discuss with you, Gianna thought as she smiled and took the seat closest to Keres. As
“Why did you say that,” Gianna tried to scold Sophia quietly as they quickly made their way back to their rooms. “You sounded too old. Keres can’t realize that you are not a normal four year old.” “I’m almost five,” Sophia offered with a shrug. “You know that is not what I meant,” Gianna said with a stern look. “I know,” Sophia said looking down at the floor. “I’m sorry. I just got mad, and one of the voices told me I should say that,” she whispered softly. “It’s okay,” Gianna said, squeezing her sister’s hand and opening the door to their rooms. “I’m glad they at least didn’t tell you to say something else.” As soon as they were inside and saw that Madame Fleur had not arrived yet, Gianna hurried Sophia over to the sofa. “Okay, as soon as Madame Fleur and whoever is done, we need to start packing for tonight. Think about what you want to take. Anything that we take will need to fit within two backpacks. I am thinking that you can wear one on your front and one on your back
“Yes. All of this looks great, “ Keres said as he looked over the plan for tomorrow. He had his most trusted advisor with him, looking over last minute changes for his big announcement tomorrow. “Thank you, your majesty,” the advisor said, inclining his head at the rare praise from the king. “I am happy that you are pleased with all of the changes.” “Yes, you did very good work,” Keres said, looking back over the plan again to make sure that nothing had been left out. “There is one more thing that I need you to do for me,” Keres said as he passed the papers back. “Of course, your majesty. Anything.” “Have our most trusted guards watch my cousins’ rooms tonight. I want to make sure that no one accidentally goes missing. Also, maybe have the guards bring up any dinner this evening and make sure to add a little something to make them sleep through the night to their tea as an added precaution.” “Of course,” the advisor agreed quickly. “We would not want to chance anyone missing t
Five hours later and Gianna was once again thanking Madame Fleur as they were finally leaving. She was exhausted. You wouldn’t think that just standing there and having someone fit you for a dress and making alterations would be so tiring. Making sure that the door was firmly shut as the last assistant carried out more fabric, Gianna slumped against the door. As soon as the door closed, Sophia opened the door to their bedroom. She quickly checked to make sure that they were alone before saying, “I thought they were going to be here all night.” “Tell me about it,” Gianna muttered, pushing herself off of the door and trying to stretch out sore muscles in her shoulders and back. “Are you done packing,” she asked quietly. “Yes,” Sophia nodded. “I put things that you might want on your bed to try to help.” “Thank you,” Gianna said as she made her way to their bedroom and her bed. “Did you pack underwear, leggings, dresses, a pair of jeans, a warm sweater, and a jacket?” “Yes,” Ol
Hurrying from King Keres’s office his advisor smiled as he remembered King Keres’s praise. He liked all of the plans that he had organized for his special day tomorrow. Surely if everything goes off perfectly tomorrow he might even be looking at a promotion or a raise the advisor thought happily to himself as he reached a heavy wooden door. Taking a deep breath to hide his happiness, the advisor quickly gave two short knocks on the door and opened it without waiting for a reply. Looking inside the room, he saw just the guard that he was looking for in the middle of a game of cards. “Captain Dolion, may I have a word with you,” the advisor said quickly as he saw all of the eyes in the room turn to him. None of them were friendly, but he also knew that they wouldn’t dare touch him due to his position. “What do you want,” Dolion asked after barely sparing the advisor a glance. “I need to speak to you out in the corridor, please,” the advisor said as he saw the looks some of the guar
