Valeria POV
My step-brothers went easy on me for the rest of the week.
They treated me like I was invisible but that was fine since they were no longer bullying me. Maybe they finally had a rethink. So, I decided to take my mother’s advice.
The sound of sizzling oil filled the kitchen as I carefully arranged the honey-glazed chicken inside a lunch box. I tried to copy the movements of the chef whose tutorials I had seen, cutting the vegetables into perfect shapes – carrots carved into delicate flowers, cucumbers rolled into a beautiful spiral.
The clock in the kitchen read 5:30 Am but I have been awake since four, determined to make the perfect lunch for my Oldest brother, Alerion.
Three weeks of living in the Packhouse has taught me to treasure these quiet morning hours before the maids arrived, before my step-father’s critical gaze – although he rarely speaks to me except when he wants to organize my life the way it pleases him and wants to inform me, still I couldn’t help but feel the heavy judgments in his eyes all the time.
Also, before my step-brothers came from their room paying no attention to me. Here, in the morning stillness, I could pretend that I was the luckiest girl in the whole of Red Ridge pack. I have hot brothers who love me to bits, a stepfather who cherishes me and a mom who will do anything for me.
Here, I don’t have to pretend that the action figure that I had gotten for Lysander from the money I saved up from my part-time job before moving here as an act of peace offering had ended up with the housekeeper’s grandkids.
Since Lysander was the hardest to crack and I had to endure going to school with him every day in the same car, I found out through the pack maids that he was into action figures. In my bid to please him, I had gotten a collection of action figures last week.
The next morning on our way to school, I had carefully brought out the gift box and called out to him gently.
“Um, Lysander?” I called out softly.
“What?” he didn’t even look up from his phone.
“I – I got you something,” I stammered holding out the gift box.
Finally, he glanced up, his eyebrows raising in mild surprise. “What is it?” he had asked flatly, almost uninterested.
“It’s…an action figure,” I said, feeling a little foolish as I gave him the gift.
He stared at the package for a moment, before lazily unwrapping it. He pulled the figures out and studied them with a cold expression.
“Huh,” he muttered. “I guess it’s fine.”
I had smiled faintly, relieved that he hadn’t rejected it outright. “I thought you might like it,” I said.
He didn’t say anything he just dropped the gift box next to him. Later that evening, while I was walking to the garden, I passed by one of the housekeepers chatting with another maid.
“Alpha Lysander gave my grandkids a set of action figures. Isn’t it nice?” the woman laughed.
At first, I tried to dismiss it but when I saw some children playing in the grass with some action figures, the same ones I had given Lysander some hours ago, my chest tightened and I felt humiliated but I knew better than to show it.
I would try again.
Not just that, I made it a point of duty last week to help Caius iron his clothes with the guidance of the maid that was in charge of it and had delivered it to him, two days ago. I had a big smile on my face just like my mom had suggested.
“Valeria!” he had arched his brows at me when he had opened his bedroom door, his eyes darting from me to the laundry basket in front of me.
“Hi, Caius,” I greeted brightly. “So, I found a way to keep your shirts crispy and still ironed all day. I used to work at a laundry shop before we moved here. So, I can just help you with ironing all your shirts, starching them or whatever you want.”
He had looked at the shirts in the laundry basket for a moment before he nodded and took them adding a curt “Thanks.”
Only for me to come home the day after and I saw the shirts on the bodies of the male servants. They said, Caius had given them to it, that it was a gift from a weirdo.
Even Zane, who I thought would be friendlier since he welcomed me and Mom well the first day. I noticed he was always leaving the house early to go to the Pack building because of work and barely had time for breakfast.
So, I started doing something for him too. I would wake up extra early each day and pack him breakfast. One of the afternoons, since I didn’t go to school that day because I had my heart, I decided to make lunch for him and Alerion.
It took hours to prepare the meal I thought they would like. When I brought the food to them in the office. Alerion was the one who answered. He didn’t say a word to me, he just glared.
“I made lunch for you and Zane,” I said quietly, holding out the containers.
Alerion glanced at the food and then back at me, his face unreadable. “You didn’t need to do that.”
“I just thought … since you’re both working so hard, packing breakfast is not just enough and I wasn’t doing anything, so I decided to bring this here.”
He had taken the containers without a word and shut the door in my face but I didn’t mind. At least they still accepted my food.
That was why this morning, I had woken up earlier to make food for Alerion.
So, two days ago, I overheard, Alerion mentioning his fondness for honey-glazed chicken to his brothers and saying he would make out time this week to go and get it from a diner in a neighbouring pack.
The recipe had taken me five attempts to perfect, each trial was funded by my meagre savings but I didn’t mind. Of all the brothers, they were the only ones who accepted my gifts.
“Miss, you’re up early,” the pack’s head housekeeper, appeared in the doorway. Her name is Rose.
“Good morning, Rose,” I managed a small smile as I secured the lid of the lunch box. “I thought I’d prepared something special for Alerion.”
“I’m sure he’d love that,” Rose chuckled. “I’ll leave you to it then.” She said.
Later, I took the bus to his office, leaving the house before Lysander was ready for school. As I neared his office, through the glass walls, I could see him hunched over his laptop with his secretary organizing documents beside him.
I knocked and ushered myself in. “Alerion,” I said softly. “I brought you breakfast but you can have it as lunch.”
He glanced up briefly. “Just leave it with Angela. I’m busy.”
I placed the lunch box on the coffee table in his office, my fingers lingering on the lid. “I made honey-glazed chicken. I remembered you mentioned…”
‘I said I’m busy,” he cut me off, his voice filled with irritation. You don’t need to bring me food anymore. That’s what the pack staff is for.”
“I was just trying to be…”
“Listen, Valeria!” he looked up at me now. “I don’t appreciate you always bringing food for me like I’m a dog or kitten. Stop showing up here and causing a nuisance.”
“I’m sorry!” I nodded. “I’ll go to school now. Have a nice day.”
***
After school, I went to the Pack Office building to retrieve the lunch box and the other containers I always bring food with to him. I was already running out of containers and I needed them for him and Zane’s breakfast tomorrow.
When I got to his office, he wasn’t in.
Wondering where he had gone to, I started towards Zane’s office thinking he would be there, when a voice reached me.
“Valeria, right?”
When I turned, it was Angela, Alerion’s secretary.
“Yes!” I nodded drawing close to her. “Do you know where my brother is?”
“Alpha Alerion?” she arched her brows at me. “He’s in a meeting. What brings you here?” she asked.
“Oh, nothing!” I responded with a smile. “Just that, I wanted to ask him for all the food containers I’ve used to bring him food. I’m running out and I’ll need them to pack his lunch tomorrow.”
“Oh my goodness!” Angela exclaimed with a bright smile. “Are you the person behind all those delicious meals?” she smacked her lips sighing wistfully, “Today’s honey-glazed chicken is a 10 out of 10 for me. It was so delicious.”
My heart lurched. “I don’t understand. What do you mean?”
“Alpha Alerion gives me all the food you bring to him. He’s always too busy to eat them. I was wondering if you could make porridge tomorrow, you see…”
But I didn’t need to hear the rest. I knew what she would say next. I turned on my heels, before she could see the tears in my eyes and started for the elevator.
I could have my body diced into small parts and offered to them but they would never accept it nor appreciate my efforts.
Who was I kidding? They would never accept me.
Valeria POVThat evening, I sat at my desk calculating my remaining savings which had dwindled significantly after my recent attempts at buying my step-brothers affection. My mother’s words from breakfast some days ago echoed in my mind. “You should focus on building relationships between yourself and your brothers. Don’t just give up because they’re not being receptive yet.”I had tried to explain to her about the gifts and lunches, about my efforts to connect with them but my mother had insisted I wasn’t trying enough.“If they’re not receptive, you’re not trying hard enough. They’ll be Future Alphas one day and are perfect examples of grace and refinement. The problem must lie with your approach. So, I kept trying. I learned all of their favourite food, spent hours browsing the stores for perfect gifts, and offered help with tasks before being asked but each of my attempts was met with the same polite dismissal, each gift redirected to another person and today… I couldn’t believe t
Valeria POVEight Months later…I struck a day off the calendar sighing with content – three more days until my eighteenth birthday. Three days until I could finally escape this prison.I had even planned everything: a small apartment in the city, far from Red Ridge Pack, I’d already gotten a job at a bookstore, and thankfully since I was no longer vying for the affection of my stepbrothers, I’ve been able to save. Not only that, I was supposed to have gotten my wolf at 14 but I am almost 18, everyone has assumed I am human but for me, it was the best thing ever. No wolf meant no pack bonds to break, no mate to pine for, no ties to sever except the already fragile ones binding me to this family that had never wanted me.The only problem was my stepfather, Alpha Cassian was growing impatient.A month ago, I’d overheard him telling my mother, that as soon as I turn 18, I’ll be mated off.His voice had been calm but it was laced with disdain as if it was my fault that I had no wolf.“She
Zane POVI leaned against the doorframe of the library watching my brothers pace the room. The tension in the library was thick enough to choke on anyone and I couldn’t blame them. No one expects that their mate will turn out to be the same girl they’ve maltreated. There was this guilt already gnawing at my heart, just thinking about that but… there was also my wolf, begging me to be with her…The image of Valeria rising from the pool last night, her wet clothes sticking to all those curves on her body – made my manliness move with excitement just thinking about all the things I want to do to that body.Which is what I want to do more than anything right now… but for my brothers.“Is it even possible?” Lysander broke the silence. He was more restless than the others. “The Moon Goddess cannot have given her to us as a mate. Something doesn’t feel right?” “I would have believed you, Ly!” I said quietly “But you remember how crazy our wolves had gone when she got hers? I think the Moon
Valeria POVFor the first time in my life, I wasn’t alone in my mind.I lay on my bed staring up at the ceiling. My mind was racing, my heart was still pounding from everything that had happened earlier. I still couldn’t believe what started as a disaster turned out to be a good thing for me.I had my wolf.“Hello, Valeria,” Hazel’s voice warmed into my heart. “You’ve waited so long for me.”Curled up in my bed, my hair was still damp from the pool but I was too excited to care. I close my eyes, letting myself disappear into my small world with my wolf.“I’m so happy to meet you,” I murmured. “I thought I was broken. Everyone said I was just human, that I’d never have a wolf and they called me…”“Useless? Weak?” Hazel finished for me. “You are none of those things, Valeria. They were wrong. You weren’t broken or wolfless. I was simply waiting for the right time. You are special, and you’re meant for more than just this small life. And you were becoming…”“Becoming what and how am I sp
Valeria POVThe late afternoon sun cast long shadows through the café window as I wiped down another table, my muscles were aching from hours of work.I pulled the apron tighter around my waist, as I glanced around the bustling café. This was a perfect escape from the chaos of my life at home and the suffocating tension I had to endure around my stepbrothers. Here, I was just another employee, trying to make ends meet and that suited me perfectly. With my 18th birthday behind me, I was determined to save enough money to leave. The café job might not pay much, but to me, it was a start.Wiping my brow after taking several orders, I returned behind the counter to start processing the orders. Just as I was done filling up a tray with coffee cups and pastries, the bell above the door chimed.I turned to the newcomers, a smile on my face to welcome them but as I saw who they were, my heart sank. It was Merah from school and her friends. As soon as they spotted me, their expressions changed
Valeria POVSome seconds later, Zane returned, carrying a small, white plastic bag.“Valeria!” he motioned to me. “Come here!”There were people at the counter, waiting in line for their order. I glared at him.“I’m busy!” I said through gritted teeth.“Do you want me to come carry you or will you come willingly?” he asked, arching a brow at me as a playful smile played on his lips.A blush crept up my neck as I swallowed hard. Why was he openly flirting with me?“I said I cannot!” I repeated, pointing at the line of customers in front of me.He nodded and came towards the counter and in one single swoop, he grabbed me and lifted me off the ground like I weighed nothing. Some of the customers hooted and clapped but I wasn’t impressed. Finally, he set me down on an empty chair, the smile was still on his face. On the other hand, I couldn’t stop blushing. After setting me on the chair, he sat on the other chair and dragged me close to him.Our faces were dangerously close to each other
Valeria POVOver the following weeks, I found myself increasingly surrounded by unexpected kindnesses from Zane.Like now, Zane stood in front of me, holding a bouquet of flowers in front of the café. The bright yellow blooms contrasted sharply with the dark autumn sky behind him and I could only stare, speechless.“I thought you could use a little something to brighten your shift,” he said with his signature grin. The one that melted my heart easily these days.I blinked, not sure what to do. Why was this becoming a habit? Despite it’s been weeks since the incident in the café when he had stepped in and defended me from Merah and her friends. Since then, he has been… different. Nicer. More attentive. At first, they were small gestures – fresh flowers appearing on my locker on every Monday morning, a hot coffee already ordered and waiting for me at the beginning of my café shifts. Then they grew more bolder, more personal. He had also mastered the art of being present without seeming
Valeria POVA few days later, it was a weekend and I was home alone. My mother and Alpha Cassian were attending the wedding ceremony of an Alpha from a nearby pack and had informed me the night before. It was almost midday when I woke up to discover it was just me at home and the pack domestic staff who seemed busy.I decided to see a movie. Though Zane had promised to come over later to help me study for my upcoming calculus test.I brought out the necessary textbooks and questions, waiting for his arrival. I was almost settling into the movie when the doorbell rang. I opened the door to find Zane leaning against the frame, flashing me that familiar grin that made my heart skip a beat.“Hey,” he said, stepping inside, refusing my attempt to relieve him of the bag of groceries he had in one hand and the bottle of wine he had in the other. “Am I too late?” he asked making straight for the kitchen. “I thought we could make lunch together before we do the math. I’ve been craving your hel
~Valeria~You know that moment when you're stuck between the Devil and the deep blue sea, and neither option looks pretty? Yeah, that was me.Zane was heading straight for me, eyes dark with anger, jaw tight, walking trouble disguised as charmfor naive little girls. My instinct pinched me to take the nearest exit, but that would only make things worse. So I stood gracefully, glancing around to see if anyone else had noticed the raging tornado that had just entered the room.Caius must have noticed but he didn’t budge and I didn’t expect him to.“Zane, what a surprise.” My lips curled into something resembling a smile, but my teeth were clenched. “Didn’t expect to see you here.”If his eyes could shoot fire, I’d be ashes by now. He didn’t say a word but his eyes howled a thousand things I could understand. A few people were already staring and my heart raced from being the center of attraction in a bad way.Without caring at all for his image or mine, Zane grabbed me by the arm and dr
~Valeria~“You need a break from that shithole they call an academy,” Landon said the moment I answered the FaceTime call. His face filled my screen, seeming more upset over the stories he had heard of my suffering. I sighed, shifting against my pillows. “Unless you have a magic wand to make everyone shut up, I don’t see how that’s possible.”Landon leaned back against what looked like an expensive leather chair. “Actually,” he drawled, “I’ve got something even better.”I raised a brow. “And that is?”“There’s a gala this weekend—high-end, exclusive, the kind of event that could actually do you some good.”I hesitated. The idea of walking into a room full of powerful strangers, pretending I belonged, made my stomach twist.“I don’t know, Lan…”He tilted his head. “Come on, Val. Think of it as a chance to network. Expand your circle. Show people you’re more than the rumors.”I bit my lip, still unconvinced. “I’d rather stay home and study with Caius.”“Study? Come on, Val.”“There wil
~Valeria~If there was a world record for how fast someone’s life could go to hell thrice in a row, I was pretty sure I’d just broken it.I thought everyone went back to paying attention at Amanda but she doubled her game and it made it even worst with the scandals.School had become a torture ground and I dreaded the weekdays badly.Even teachers looked at me with disgust and made snide comments about my grades dropping low.“If you focused more on school than boys, you wouldn’t have an F on your maths test.” Mr. Collins said as I approached him in his office about my scores.Right there, my breathing went shallow and I was close to passing out from the drum of insults loaded on me.I expected them to know better. I wasn’t skipping classes to make out under the bleachers. I was suffocating under the pressure of deadlines, assignments and soul crushing comments and drags on my social media. But it didn’t matter to them to stop and think for a second that I was the victim here.Swallow
~Valeria~The thing with rumors? They never really die. You can suppress them with facts but some people would never accept the truth. They would rather eat me up with their eyes and mutter insults in disgust. And right now? I just wanted the ground to swallow me from this walk of disgrace.I knew appearing in school would be the biggest mistake but I didn’t expect the silence. I thought they would throw crumpled papers at my head, laugh in my face or mutter curses but they didn’t.Not even a single whisper as I passed, just eyes, so many damn eyes watching me like I had their favorite soap opera on my face.Honestly, it was worse than the gossip. At least when people talked, I could pretend I didn’t care but not now.“Just keep walking.” Lysander muttered beside me, jolting me back to the reality that he was here.I did keep walking, head high, spine straight like a model like I hadn’t read half the school calling me every single name under the sun on social media last night.Slut.
~Valeria~The guilt was eating me alive.I wasn’t the one who called Landon. I wasn’t the one who embarrassed him. But I was the reason it happened.Maybe that’s why Alerion’s words wouldn’t stop echoing in my head.I exhaled sharply and pulled out my phone.I hesitated for a second, my thumb hovering over the call button. Then, before I could talk myself out of it, I pressed it.He answered almost immediately.“Val?” His voice was deep, groggy, like he had just woken up. And damn, it was the kind of voice that could make any girl weak in the knees.I swallowed. “Hey… are you busy?”There was a pause. Then a lazy chuckle. “Well, I am now.”Despite everything, a small smile tugged at my lips.“I..uh, I’m sorry for disturbing you.”“I can never see you as a burden, Val.” His voice was soft, sincere. And just like that, my heart did a stupid little flip. His words made me even more guilty because he was the sweetest guy ever and I just had to make him look bad with my selfish actions.Cl
~Alerion~I was in the wrong place at the right time. That was the only explanation. I wasn’t following her. I wasn’t looking for her. I was just... there. Walking. Thinking. Telling myself I didn’t care where she was or who she was with. And then I heard it. A struggle for life. A sharp gasp. My body reacted before my brain did. My wolf grew reckless, muscles tensing, instincts screaming one thing.Protect her. The moment I saw her, my stomach twisted. She was fighting, but she was losing. For the first time in my life, I felt something I never wanted to feel. Panic. A sick, helpless kind of fear that turned my blood to ice. I hated it. I fucking hated it. And I was going to make them pay for it. The fight was over before it even began. I moved through them like a blade through flesh. Quick. Brutal. Relentless. By the time the last one fell, my breathing was steady, my heart still hammering but I wasn’t afraid anymore. I was angry. Valeria was staring at me, wide-eyed,
~Valeria~I thought I was about to die.It wasn’t even dramatic or some slow-motion, life-flashing-before-my-eyes kind of moment. One second, I was fighting, throwing every last bit of strength into getting away, and the next, I was outnumbered, overpowered, and completely screwed. And then he showed up.Alerion.It happened so fast, I barely had time to register it. One second, the rogue in front of me was lunging, fangs bared, hands ready to grab me, and the next… Snap. A sickening crunch echoed through the alley as the rogue’s body crumpled to the ground. For a second, everything went still. Then the others turned to him, instinctively backing up, their fight-or-flight instincts kicking in too late.Because Alerion was already moving. And he didn’t just fight them;; he slaughtered them.I’d seen him covered in blood before. That first night when I saw him walk into the house, his shirt torn, hands stained with crimson red. I thought maybe it was from some typical Alpha bullshit,
~Valeria~I wasn’t sure if I could call it a date. Landon and I had already finalized that we wouldn’t be doing any of that, but that didn’t mean we couldn’t still hang out.And honestly? It was kind of nice having someone to talk to without all the baggage that came with my usual life.I didn’t have to walk on eggshells around him and that was my favorite part.I took a sip of my drink, swirling the straw slowly as I glanced at him. “You know, I think this is the longest I’ve ever willingly spent time with someone from your pack or any other pack to be honest.”Landon chuckled, his eyes twinkling with delight as he leaned against the booth. “I’ll take that as a compliment.”“You most definitely should…” I said, smirking. “I don’t really…do people.”“Oh, trust me, I noticed.”“And I was starting to feel proud that I got to be one of the chosen ones.” He winked at me.I playfully rolled my eyes but I didn’t deny it. He was t wrong at all. Most people were either a nightmare or a leech
~Caius~Valeria sat across from me, her brows creased in frustration as she tapped the eraser of her pencil against her notebook. My eyes couldn’t help but stay glued to the way she bit her lower lip, deep in concentration. For a moment, I forgot why I was even here, wondering what she would think when she noticed how closely I was watching her. “Focus,” she muttered to herself, her eyes scanning the page.I smirked. “You know, talking to yourself won’t magically provide a solution to the equation.”She fired me a glare before huffing and leaning back in her chair. “I’m really trying, you know, but this is just boring.”“Math has never been fun; you just have to get used to it.” “That’s how you put your head in the game and pass.” I advised. She rolled her eyes, but before she could give a response, the door opened. “Valeria,” Evelyn’s voice interrupted, her eyes roving between us.Valeria tensed, straightening in her chair. “Yes?”That was strange. She always addressed her with
