Zoe's POV

I woke up groggily to find myself in different yet familiar surroundings.

How did I manage to get into Xavier’s bed again? I had no memory of going to his home.

Wait, what was the last thing I remembered?

I racked my brain and sat up straight.

I was kidnapped with Alyssa. John had saved her and left me to the wolves, literally. Xavier had shown up in the nick of time and saved me.

Sitting up I felt a sudden cold hit my chest and back. I shivered and looked down to find myself utterly naked. How did I get undressed?

I did not feel anything between my legs, so I could assume that nothing of that sort happened. I wrapped the blanket around me and looked around the room. Where was Xavier?

I saw a note stuck to the bedside table lamp. It read, ‘Gone to check on Alyssa. Will be back by lunch.’ Impulsively I kissed the paper and folded it.

Feeling hungry, I got up and threaded to the kitchen to ransack his fridge.

I found half a loaf of bread and some cheese. Thankfully, ne

Xavier’s POVJohn’s question ignited a fire within me. A rage that I did not want to express in front of my sister’s chosen mate. But this man was making it hard to stay in control. How dare he excuse sacrificing Zoe to the rogues? I made a fist from my hand and held it tight to make sure I kept Spike in control, “You mean to say that you understood what a dangerous situation it was and still made the choice to leave an unmated girl from your pack with the rogues?” I asked, trying to keep my voice steady. He opened his mouth but I interrupted him, “You are first and foremost a beta of the pack. It entails a lot of responsibility for your fellow wolves. Think carefully about what you say next.” I studied him as he nervously crossed his hands and fiddled with his thumbs. I could smell the sweat on him. He was looking for a story to cover how awful he truly was. “Of course, Alpha. I know the heavy responsibility to all my wolves. But that’s the thing,” He shifted ahead, trying to ac

Xavier POVZoe was curled up in the blanket that I draped over her when I had brought her in. She was rocking back and forth while staring at the bloody uniform that I had stupidly left on the bathroom floor instead of throwing it in the laundry like every time I did with my bloody clothes. I rushed to her side and was on my knees beside her in an instant. “Zoe?”I called but she was like in a trace. I scooped her and stood up, the clothes falling back to the bathroom floor she had picked them from. That made her look at me like she was seeing me for the first time. She seemed surprised to wike me there. Like waking up from a long slumber. “Hey there.” I looked at her, curled in my arms as I walked back inside the room and lay her on the bed. She grabbed a handful of my shirt and pulled me down with her. I did not resist. It was clear that she needed me. I moved her to my lap and settled on the bed. She placed her head on my chest without a word. I wrapped my arms around her unde

Zoe’s POVXavier’s way of helping me was different. I can’t deny that I loved every second of it. The way he worked my body made me forget everything around us and lose track of time. Every second made me feel like we belonged together and this is how it is meant to be. It was a strange emotion. I felt like I had known him for a lifetime when we had barely met a couple of month ago. So much had happened since then. I had been so busy I had not gone to meet Dad. He must’ve been so lonely and sad. I know I would not be as courageous as he was. In the evening, I woke up and found that Xavier was gone again. Another note awaited me on the bedside tablelamp. It read, ‘Gone to Office, there is an emergency. You can borrow my clothes. Don’t wait for me.’ The last part meant that he was not going to be back anytime soon. I went to the bathroom and was relieved to see that the bloody uniform was gone. Xavier must’ve made sure that I did not come across it again. I showered and borrowed

Zoe’s POVI walked in and saw the same receptionist. I walked straight to the elevator without giving her a chance to stop me or ask anything. “Where are you going? You cannot just-” She called behind me but I was already inside the elevator as someone had just left and it was closing. I had been to Xavier’s office before and knew of his floor number. I pressed the button and watched with satisfaction as the elevator doors closed in her face. I was sure she was going to call security and I wanted to see her face when she would be told that I was Xavier’s paying client. I walked into the office and found Xavier sitting in his rotating chair waiting for me. “Welcome.” He said with a smirk, one foot placed on the knee of the other leg. I plopped my handbag onto a couch and spoke, hoping to convey my frustration, “I get it.”“What do you get?” He raised a brow. This man was testing my patience. “I get that this is unlike your usual high-profile cases and I’m paying in installments.

Xavier’s POVJacob brought the files that I had asked and the three of us had been creating a strategy for a while now. Zoe had been sharing some stuff that she thought could help us with the case. Everything had to be perfect for us to be able to hit John without him having any chance to escape. The more I found out about him the more suspicious I got of how he got to be the new Beta of the pack. Men like him don’t just get promoted, especially when there is so little merit to him. I still don’t know what my sister saw in him. It had become personal to me now. Not just my mate but my sister’s life was also on the line. I had to expose John’s real face to her without making things rough between us. I knew I was all she had after our mom. Father had been more of a mentor to me and left her to the nanny. “You are not listening. I’ll make some coffee, we are starting to get distracted.” Zoe stood up and I looked at them. She was right, I had started to zone again. Coffee would do

She looked at me like I was the only thing that mattered to her. Did she even realize that she was doing it, or was it the mate bond making it happen? “About what?” She asked and I raised my brows confused, so she repeated herself, “You were about to say something when I said I’ll ask Auntie Julie to bring homecooked dinner.” “Yes, yes.” I mentally facepalmed, what was happening to me? “Jacob and I got this. You have been here since morning. Thank you for your help, but you should go home and get some rest. If I’ll need you I’ll call, or send Jacob to pick you up. Take my keys. You don’t have to drive all the way back to Silver Moon in this weather.” It was February and still snowing. I was not going to allow her to travel in this weather alone. She wanted to refuse or argue but I dangled my keys in front of her, and she quickly got them. Everyone who had been to the loft loved it. Except for my father who did not approve of my methods. But he did not matter anymore. Once Zoe

Xavier’s POVAfter dinner, we had smoothly transitioned back to work. Zoe proved to be a great work partner. She was just as focused and refused to lie down or rest for even an hour despite my insisting she do so. I understood how personal it was, and I admired her resilience. She was ready to go to any lengths to save her father. She had taken on Jacob’s role in his absence and it made work go on quite fast despite the fact that there was a lot of data to sort through and I preferred doing everything manually in hardware. Due to personal experiences, I had learned that big heavy files were harder to steal than a tiny USB with terabytes of classified data. Also, paper was unhackable and once burnt could never be retrieved thus, saving it from ever being recovered by the wrong people. Either she would read out some stuff and I would note down whatever I believed to be useful or I would read and dictate to her what to note down for me. We had been so busy sifting through piles of da

I waited for her to fall asleep before slipping out from behind her, tucking her in properly, and getting in my working chair to resume on the case. Jacob joined me with breakfast for three and some good news. I shushed him so he did not wake Zoe up. Jacob and I sorted through the new data that he had brought, a plan started to form in my head. But I needed more details before I could confirm or set anything in motion. A premature plan is more dangerous than no plan. It was clear that John had played the long game. I had to do the same. I just didn’t want it to be too late. Alyssa had chosen a spring wedding, which meant that we had roughly two more months to free Zoe’s father and confirm if John was truly an awful person beyond redemption or not. Jacob had gone to attend a call on my behalf as Zoe stirred and sat up, rubbing her eyes adorably. I had seen her wake up before, but not like this. It did not make her less cute. Quite the opposite. “What time is it? How long was I aslee

It took an hour and a lot of emotional blackmail from Aunt Julie to convince me to let Xavier come to Kansas City. The only reason I agreed was to test if he could keep his word. Nothing more, nothing less. After endless talk about mates, second chances, and the Moon Goddess, Aunt Julie smiled and patted my back. "I'll go tell him you need to talk. Be nice, okay?"I didn’t roll my eyes, though I wanted to. I respected her too much for that. Instead, I shook my head, knowing she had played me perfectly. She always did.If anyone had a right to push me, it was Aunt Julie. She had done more for my family than anyone. More than just a distant cousin of my dad or a housekeeper—she was family. The closest thing I had to a mother."Be nice, Princess." She gave me one last sweet smile before heading inside.I sighed, leaning against the hood of my car and fidgeting with my keychain. My fingers itched for something that wasn’t there—my father’s necklace. The one I had given him in the prison.

Zoe's POVI climbed the stairs, leaving Xavier in the garage. He needed time to calm down. My forgiveness—if it ever came—wouldn’t be immediate. That was his problem, not mine.He wanted to tell me something about Claire, probably to convince me I had nothing to worry about. But I didn’t care about her. I was done caring about him. His past didn’t matter to me anymore. The only thing that mattered was getting to those coordinates. I had no idea what I would find there, but it was my only lead. My mother left me that clue for a reason. I wouldn’t ignore it. A decade had passed. Anything could have changed. But I needed answers.I rushed through the house, grabbing only the essentials. Clothes, water, a flashlight, a knife. I packed quickly, like I had done this before. Because I had. Running was second nature now."She’s really doing this," Aunt Julie muttered from the kitchen doorway.I ignored her. Nothing to say.Xavier, however, had other plans. By the time I reached the garage, my

Zoe's POVI barely heard Xavier start talking. I knew he had been planning this speech since we got in the car two days ago."Zoe, I won’t pretend to understand your pain. I won’t insult you by saying I do. But I know how many times I’ve let you down." His voice was careful, like he was walking on thin ice."Don’t. Please." I turned away. I had dreamed of this moment so many times—Xavier realizing what a huge mistake he had made. But not like this. Not when I was barely holding myself together."Let me say this. You need to hear it, and I need to say it." He stepped closer, his hands resting lightly on my arms. Not trapping me. Just asking me to stay."Why?" My voice was bitter. My body tensed under his touch. I hated how my senses reacted to him now—too sharp, too raw. "You didn’t care about talking months ago.""Believe me or don’t, but I thought letting you go was the right choice. I wanted you to have a fresh start." Regret thickened his voice, but I didn’t care.I let out a short

Zoe's POV"What are you so happy about?" I asked Aunt Julie whose excitement was confusing me.Instead of answering right away, she gave me a nostalgic look, sat me down on the couch, and took my hands gently, like a mother would."Did your dad ever tell you that you have your mother's eyes?" she asked, her smile soft but sad.She didn’t wait for me to respond—probably because she already knew the answer, "Of course not. He did his best to remove any mention of her from his life. That was his way of dealing with his grief."What about my grief? I wanted to ask but I chose to listen. She was right, no one was allowed to talk about Mom in our house. I was never allowed to ask any questions. Aunt Julie tried her best to fill that hole in my life but for a ten-year-old girl, no one could replace her mother. I barely had any memories of her either. The psychiatrist had told Dad that it was a form of PTSD. I don't remember what the trauma exactly was, but apparently, it was deep enough for

Zoe's POVI ran to my room, grabbing everything from the box. My old laptop barely held together, but I powered it up and searched the coordinates. Then, I rushed outside to my broken car.Xavier and Aunt Julie followed as I yanked open the backseat door."You can't take that. It won’t even start," Xavier commented."It better. The coordinates are a two-day drive away," I muttered, then turned to him. "Key?" I held out my hand."Zoe—""Key. Now."He sighed, pulled the key from his pocket, and placed it in my palm. I grabbed it and turned without a thank you."You can't let her go alone," Aunt Julie protested."I'm not," Xavier assured, arms crossed as I tried to start the car. It didn’t even sputter.I kept turning the key, refusing to admit he was right. The car had been through too much. It wasn’t taking me anywhere.Aunt Julie whispered to Xavier, "How long do we wait?""You can wait inside. She won’t last long," he replied, knowing full well I could hear him."I heard that!" I sna

Zoe's POVI placed the envelope on the coffee table between us, staring at Xavier. "What are these?"His brows furrowed as he leaned forward, confusion flickering across his face. "A letter to you?""The numbers. What do they mean?" I resisted the urge to roll my eyes—or worse, to kiss the perplexed look off his face. He was trying not to upset me. I didn't know why he suddenly cared, but a small part of me was relieved he hadn’t mentioned his so-called chosen mate. Right now, it seemed like he only cared about me. I didn't want to let him in again, but deep down, I wasn’t sure if I had ever truly let him go."Looks like coordinates," he murmured, thinking out loud.I knew it. Snatching the envelope back, my fingers brushed against his, and for a brief moment, we both pretended not to feel anything."I can have the location checked. If you want," Xavier offered softly.I didn’t answer. Dahlia, my beast, was already debating with me.'Say yes,' she urged, practically purring."I won’t.

Xavier's POV"Weren't you informed not to call? The lines can be intercepted!" I whisper-yelled into the phone as soon as I was sure neither Aunt Julie nor Zoe could overhear."This one's fine, Sir. I made sure. And this is urgent." Jacob spoke in a hushed tone like he was afraid."Well?" I said expectantly, urging Jacob to resume."We were found. Some of our men work for your father and call him Alpha. I don't know how they found out." Jacob informed."Did they take Claire?" I asked expecting the worst."No. They tripped off an alarm I had planted around the area and I got a fifteen-minute headstart. I drugged Claire and took her before they could get us. They knew about the underground room." He told."Where are you now?""At the Shaw Safehouse. I cleaned up any evidence of the underground room being in use before we left. They won't know Claire was there." Jacob reassured me and then said, "But the bad news is, the cleanup team at Golden Eclipse didn't do as great of a job.""What d

The next morning, I was up and out of the house just as the dawn broke through the sky.I barely slept. Every time I closed my eyes, the same nightmare burned through my mind. I had waited for my wolf for so long, only to realize I would never transform like the others because I was wolfless. But now, I had a beast. Not a regular wolf, but an animal nonetheless. And I wanted to transform. I needed to know it had actually happened, that I wasn’t imagining it. Focusing on that need kept me distracted from my grief, kept me from falling apart over the loss of my father."Dahlia," I called out, dropping to my knees. I willed my bones to shift, for my skin to be covered in thin gray fur, for my canines to elongate and sharpen. But nothing happened.Dahlia tried to help me, pushing her strength into me, but it was useless. No matter how hard we tried, my body refused to transform.“UGH!” I screamed in frustration.I could talk to her. That was proof enough that I wasn’t wolfless anymore. Bu

[WARNING: This chapter contains details of gore and death. Proceed with caution.]Zoe's POVThat night, I slept in my old bed. Apparently, no one had known about our departure from Golden Eclipse or our arrival at Silver Moon. Xavier chose to stay, and Aunt Julie offered him my father’s room, but he refused. He knew I’d be furious if he stayed there. I blamed him for my father’s death, and honestly, so did he.Aunt Julie wanted to ask Xavier about his pack, but he’d been so quiet that she decided against it.I sat on my bed, staring at the contents of the wooden box. I looked at the pictures again, this time paying more attention to the details. I read the notes on the back of each one. Some were simple comments about the photo, while others were written in the same unfamiliar language as the bundle of papers and needed to be deciphered. It was all too much to process at once. The only good thing about opening the box so far was that it had distracted me from my grief, even if just for
