A Defiant Step

last update Last Updated: 2024-12-17 21:22:31

Lily stood rooted to the spot, her cheek still stinging from the slap that had landed with surprising force.

The pain was across her face, but what hurt more was the shock that Lexa, of all people, would hit her so openly.

She hadn’t even fully processed what had just happened when she felt her mother’s anger rising beside her.

“How dare you?” Lily’s mother hissed, her eyes flashing as she stepped toward Lexa. “You lay a hand on the new Luna? You have crossed a line.”

But Lexa was undeterred. She shot a glare at Lily’s mother, clearly unfazed by her position or her anger.

“The new Luna?” she scoffed. “Lily doesn’t deserve that title. She doesn’t deserve anything. I know she must’ve done something to rig the ceremony.”

Lily’s heart skipped a beat, the absurdity of the accusation making her want to laugh.

“Rigged the ceremony?” she repeated. “Lexa, do you even hear yourself? I would never choose this fate. Not in a million years.”

“Oh, you’re clever, Lily, I’ll give you that. Playing the victim so perfectly, getting everyone to feel sorry for you. But I know the truth.” She took a step closer, her gaze never wavering. “I know you’ve wormed your way into Liam and Lucas’s lives somehow, that you did something to make the Moon Goddess choose you.”

Lily let out a disbelieving laugh, folding her arms across her chest.

“Are you serious, Lexa? I hate them. I hate everything about this pack and everything they’ve done to me. Why would I ever want to be their mate?”

The crowd around them began to murmur, a ripple of shock and confusion spreading through the room.

Lexa, however, was undeterred, shaking her head slowly.

“That’s exactly what you want everyone to believe. That poor, innocent little Lily was ‘forced’ into this. But I know better. And believe me, I won’t let you get away with it.”

Lily felt a wave of anger surge through her. She couldn’t understand why Lexa would be so blind, so obsessed with the twins that she’d convince herself of anything to keep them away from anyone else.

“Believe whatever you want,” Lily shot back, her voice trembling with rage. “But I’ll tell you one thing: I didn’t choose this. I’d do anything to escape it.”

Lexa’s face twisted.

“You’re not fooling me, Lily. I’ll make your life miserable every single day you’re around. You think you’ve suffered in the past? Just wait. School is going to be hell, and you’ll have no one to blame but yourself.”

Lily’s mother motioned sharply to the guards.

“Enough. Take her away. She has no right to speak to Lily like this.”

The guards immediately stepped forward, grabbing Lexa’s arms, but she struggled, shouting furiously as they pulled her away.

“You can’t just get rid of me! I’ll make sure everyone knows what kind of a liar you are, Lily. You’ll regret this!”

Her voice faded as the guards dragged her down the hallway, her threats lingering in the air like a storm that had yet to pass.

Lily felt a shiver run down her spine, a mixture of anger, fear, and disbelief swirling inside her.

As much as she wanted to dismiss Lexa’s words as jealous ramblings, a small part of her couldn’t shake the feeling that the rest of the pack might share Lexa’s resentment.

“Come, Lily,” her mother said, placing a firm hand on her shoulder. “You don’t have to listen to such nonsense. She’s just bitter, that’s all.”

But as they turned toward the massive doors of the large hall, Lily felt a sudden heaviness settle over her.

She could feel the tension building, the resentment from the pack that awaited her just beyond those doors.

Her stomach got sick, and her feet felt like they were made of lead.

She knew what waited for her on the other side—hostility, judgment, and the cold, unforgiving stares of people who would see her as nothing more than an unworthy intruder.

She glanced around at the faces that filled the room, watching as every pair of eyes turned to her, their expressions dark with suspicion and disgust.

She could feel their hatred seeping into her, every look, every murmur weighing down on her like a thousand stones.

Lily’s heart hammered in her chest, her breath catching in her throat. She felt a surge of panic, her mind racing as she took in the hostile faces surrounding her.

This wasn’t what she wanted. She couldn’t go through with this.

The twins’ father, the Alpha, stood at the far end of the room, his eyes locked onto her with a look that was both expectant and cold.

She knew he was waiting for her to take her place, to fulfill the role that had been chosen for her. But as she stared back at him, the weight of everything—the hatred, the resentment, the suffocating expectations—pressed down on her like a storm she couldn’t escape.

Her mother’s hand tightened on her shoulder, a silent command to keep moving, to step forward and accept her fate. But Lily felt her legs stiffen, her body refusing to obey.

She couldn’t do it. She couldn’t step into a life that would chain her to people who despised her, to a destiny she never wanted.

A voice in the crowd spoke up.

“Look at her. She’s nothing but trouble.”

Another voice joined in.

“She’s not fit to be Luna. She’ll bring shame to the pack.”

Lily’s face burned with anger and shame as the voices grew louder, each word laced with scorn and derision.

She knew they saw her as an outsider, an unwanted burden forced upon them. And in that moment, something inside her snapped.

“No!” she shouted, her voice ringing out clear and strong, silencing the crowd. “I won’t do this. I won’t be a pawn in this twisted game. I never wanted any of this, and I refuse to be part of it.”

The crowd gasped, murmurs of shock and outrage rippling through the hall.

Her mother’s grip tightened even more, her nails digging into Lily’s shoulder as she whispered harshly.

“Lily, don’t you dare make a scene. You’re embarrassing us.”

But Lily shook her off, her voice rising above the noise.

“I don’t care! I’m not going to stand here and let you all dictate my life. This is my choice, and I choose to walk away.”

With that, she turned on her heel, her heart pounding with defiance as she took a step back, away from the crowd and the expectations they’d heaped upon her.

She heard gasps of horror, felt the eyes of the pack boring into her back, but she didn’t care.

For once, she was reclaiming control, refusing to bow to their demands.

The Alpha’s voice cut through the murmurs, cold and commanding.

“Lily! Do you understand what you’re doing? This is an act of betrayal to the pack.”

Lily paused, her heart racing as she turned to face him, her eyes blazing with determination.

“I understand perfectly,” she replied, her voice steady. “But I won’t be forced into a life that isn’t mine. Not by you, not by anyone.”

With that, she turned around and walked out, leaving the hatred and disdain behind.
