Chapter 3
Now Alpha and at twenty five, Laurel Kris was not new to the ups and downs of ruling over her pack, to the pain of losing in battle, the smell of victory, the stab of losing a trusted warrior to an enemy pack or even the fear of attack. She had trained herself for this, every day over the past six years since her parents' death. Standing at the balcony of her home now, Laurel wondered what it would have felt like if her parents were still here, and even more, she wondered what difference it would have made. She would probably have been married off to a wealthy Beta or even an Alpha somewhere, or perhaps she would have married one of the court lord's sons, who would in turn have taken over the ruling of the pack after her father's demise, which would not have happened sooner."My Lady" The greeting from the maid brought her back to reality."Is all well?""All is well, Alpha. It’s just that you have a visitor, Lord Charles is in the hall, he wishes to speak with you.""I'll be in shortly, you can serve him tea."The maid bowed and left, Laurel took her time to communicate with her sister through her eyes, it was something they had gotten used to doing over the years since their parent's death. To let each other know their way about, they had gotten used to speaking in each other's head in what Kristen described as security consciousness. If anything, Laurel appreciated the bond she had formed with her sister over the six years since their parent's death. It was one thing she was sure would never have happened if their parents were around. Now, as an Alpha of a great pack and the commander of all, she had learnt to appreciate the little things, she had learnt to lay her life in seconds for her people, even if it meant sacrificing her own self or comfort- not like there was any.In no time her sister was by her side, in full armor straight from the training field. Laurel smiled gratefully and pecked her sister on the cheek, another habit."The way you reach me at every beck and call I make should be investigated" Laurel said jokingly as she pecked her sister on the chick."When it's your job to protect your sister, who turns out to be the Alpha of the Sacred Moon pack, you take the job a little too seriously," Kristen replied in the same tone."Tell me about it," They both laughed. "So how did you get here so quickly, were you waiting for my call?""Maybe I was or maybe I teleported. After seeing that no good fellow with his entourage arrive the castle earlier, I figured you'll need my help""Kristen…""You are not trying to defend him, are you?""Of Course not, I mean you know he's Lord Gilbert's son and you know they don't take kindly to rejection. I'm beginning to wonder what they are doing here, Kristen. What if he wants me to be his Luna? What if his father… what if he's my mate?" Laurel said in quick succession."I don't know about Lunas, Alphas and mates but I know one thing, the moon goddess is certainly not so stupid to give you that lily-livered fellow for a husband, talk more of even a mate." Kristen said sternly as they crossed the hall into the courtyard.Laurel breathed in the fresh air, "After all these years of carrying this weight on my shoulders, I'm beginning to think I need to find my stand too, Kris. People are beginning to talk, I need to get a man… a representative of an Alpha or something, I need a husband."Kristen paused and turned her sister around to face her, "Laurel, I've seen you make some very tough decisions since our parent's passing. But I tell you this now, if you ever decide you need a husband, an Alpha or something here, it should be because you have seen him and you want him, not because of some stupid decision you have to make for the people."Laurel broke her sister's hold on her hand and turned away, "You don't understand Kris, " in the last council of elders' meeting. Lord Gilbert raised the topic, I was asked when I'll bring in a man, Kris. I said soon, because… I had to say something and I've looked around this entire place, this Pack. If anything, Charles is a far better option I have for a husband here, Kris.""And what happens to your one true mate if you decide to take the first man that asks for your hand? Are you just going to jump into conclusions and marry because the council of elders suggested you get a man?"Laurel grunted, "I don't believe in that bullshit, Kris. At least not for me, this is my life here, to keep papa's legacy, to serve these people and give them a good life. As a good Luna and the Alpha that I'm positioned to be right now, if it means sacrificing my own happiness for this pack, I'll do it.They paused in front of the hallway door now, Kristen gave her sister a firm look of disapproval."I've seen you make decisions that will not interest you, Laurel, but this one is a top tier one. If by chance what that Charles man has to say is about marriage or a proposal, you need time to think through it. Don't give a hasty reply, this is your life till the rest of your days, you marry the wrong man, you are selling yourself to bondage for the rest of your days."Laurel sighed tiredly, "I understand, Kris. Thank you for always being there, I'll try.""All this is just an assumption anyways. Remember, I'm just outside here in case you need me. And don't forget, if you marry the wrong person, it will be very hard for your true mate to locate you."Laurel rolled her eyes at her sister and went into the hall, she honestly didn't believe in happy endings. Especially not for her, whatever it was that lay outside the gates of these walls were certainly not for her.To her, living meant existing. And seeing to it that the rest of her pack existed was top most on that list, if marrying a powerful Lord's son was going to help protect her pack, then she'll do just that.It was her responsibility, her role, her reason for existence as an Alpha's daughter and of course, as the Luna that fate had made her.Lord Charles Gilbert was waiting patiently by the time Laurel arrived at the hall. Seated comfortably on a golden chair, a glass of wine in hand and one feet placed carelessly on the table in front of him.His eyes scanned the woman that approached him, Alpha of the Sacred Moon Pack, Laurel Kris. The only woman he had ever wished for himself even as a child when he first escorted his father to the palace for the council of elders meeting. He had always known she would be his own eventually, and together they will achieve what his father struggled for and couldn't achieve in his years- the position as the Alpha of the Sacred Moon Pack, the only thing he could kill for right now."Lord Charles, I was informed you were here to see me," The Luna created.Charles rose to his feet and took her hand in his possessively, he kissed it first before ushering him to a seat, "My Lady. Indeed I came to see you, what better way of spending a good evening other than being with a pretty woman like yourself?"Laurel flashed him a beautiful smile, "You flatter me, My Lord. I see you made yourself comfortable already."Charles raised a glass to that effect and poured Laurel a glass from the bottle on the table, "To a great future!"Laurel took a sip, "So, to what do I owe this visit?" She asked casually."Oh, I've come to discuss matters of interest, my father informed me of a sensitive matter that was discussed in the meeting yesterday, I know this is a sensitive matter, Lady Laurel. But I am proposing that you marry me.""What?" She sat up in the chair and looked at him to be sure. "What did you say?" Laurel asked again."I want us to marry, I want to make you my Luna."She opened her mouth to say something but just then, the door burst open and a maid ran in, panting. Beside the maid, Kristen followed in a speed of light, sword in hand ready to battle."Laurel are you alright? She wouldn't tell me what is wrong, she just requested to see you immediately" Kristen said in one breath. The maid was panting and tried to speak in one breath, "My lady … the flu, it's out again… the same flu that killed your father. The men from the river were fishing and then… they just fell into the water with blood in their mouths, some of them managed to get to the healer."Laurel staggered back and nearly lost her balance in the process. "How bad is it, Lucia? How bad is it?""I'm sorry my Lady, so far we have recorded five deaths… we still have a host of them in the healer's place… they think it's working through the water"Even as she spoke, Laurel saw the blood in Lucia's mouth, a scream escaped her lips._______Earl woke up with a splitting headache, was he not supposed to feel relieved at least after taking a nap? He sighed and got out of the bed. How was he supposed to have peace when his wolf was so hungry and mad at him? He made his way into the bathroom to freshen up, he was disturbed and troubled.Sleeping was as difficult, nightmares. When he stepped out of the bathroom, his head felt better, he had made sure to soak it in water, as if begging his wolf to calm down. Thankfully he was feeling refreshed, he donned a shirt and picked his armor and sword and put them in place.Gregg was probably waiting for him in the courtyard; they had arranged a duel to help them forget the pain for a while, and to help Earl think. When he reached the courtyard, as expected, Gregg was already waiting there for him, he appeared to be in a very deep thought as well. With his back to him, Gregg was dressed in a simple shirt, trouser and shirt, his sharp blonde hair was glistering and flying with the wing.Earl thought Gregg looked very beautiful standing there, it was a wolf blood thing, something to do with his wolf regularly being fed. Unlike Earl, Gregg enjoyed taking new women every day. For Earl, women came when the need arose, and that was often once in a while,"You look so worried standing there, no woman today?" Earl asked his friend in a playful tone.Gregg turned around slowly, he looked Earl over like he was just seeing him for the first time in a long while, he regarded him for only a few minutes before shaking his head slightly with a chuckle."You came fully prepared for war, should I say my last prayers already?" Gregg said jokingly."It wouldn't be so bad to kill you now, would it?" Earl returned."Let me see you try" Gregg replied with a smirk and they both laughed."So, why are you so bothered? What is wrong?" Earl asked again.Gregg regarded his friend for a while, "Something is going to happen, Earl. I feel it, something more than this whole Rogue thing, I feel like an energy shift will take place and it will…""You worry too much Gregg, I'll send out letters tomorrow, I just need time to process the whole thing. The Rogues, they won't get in here… we are definitely not dying if that's what you are afraid of."Gregg grunted and drew his sword. "For a Alpha, I think you play too much"Earl laughed and drew his own sword too, "Most times you complain that I don't speak at all""Tell me about it," Gregg shouted as he made the first strike with his sword, Earl dodged of course. They continued with the duel for a while. Indeed, it made them forget. Earl and Gregg never really got along when they first met, probably because of Earl's controlling and authoritative aura, Earl being used to always being in control and Gregg who was born with his protective instincts as a pure breed. When they first met, they both spent the next three years fighting to get along because their parents forced them to, existing in the same palace did not leave them much choice but when they finally got along, they became inseparable."So, what do you think about Lasik's marriage suggestion, found a mate yet?" Gregg asked carefully."You don't think I need that sort of distraction now, do you?" Earl eyed his friend."On the contrary, I think that might be just what we need to get us out of this whole Rogue mess" Gregg said seriously now, dropping his sword."Whatever are you talking about?" Earl asked with no emotion in his voice."You said something about reaching out to the neighboring Packs, I have been doing some research and some serious thinking. The Sacred Moon pack is closest to us, the most powerful of them I could pick, their armies are superb, trained by the late Alpha's daughter herself, the younger Lady Kristen Kris.""So, where is this headed?" Earl asked with a little interest in his voice now."Good. After the death of the former Alpha, the pack is now ruled by his first daughter, Lady Laurel Kris herself. You won't believe what killed their parents, Earl.""I'm not going to play your guessing game, Gregg, spit it out already."Gregg made a low grunt, "Well, the Lumphic flu did!"Earl's jaw dropped open, "But that can be cured with the leaves and we have it grown everywhere around here, how come they didn't know that?""Well, I like to think it was fate. The good news is this same flu is back and is threatening to wipe off the entire Pack, having been there for a little over five days already.""That is not very good news." Earl stated frankly."Well, you can say that. But we can use this to our advantage, that is why it is good news.""Hmmm. How exactly do you intend to do this?""My sources tell me they have been trying to contain the flu with medicines and whatever…""Your sources, why do I feel like you know more than you are telling?" Earl asked curiously."Well, you might be right. But there's no time to explain, Lady Laurel Kris will be here any moment from now… for the cure. This is an opportunity to form an alliance between two powerful packs, do you know what I mean?""I don't know what you mean," Earl said firmly."Come on Earl. We have been doing this long enough, it's time to get serious"Earl shook his head in rejection, "What are you proposing?""A pact, a contract or whatever you chose to call it, dear Alpha. An alliance, marriage. Healing in exchange for power.""What exactly are you saying?""I am saying that you will ask the lady for something in return for the healing she needs, this will help us with the alliance we need against the Rogues.""So in essence?”"You will either propose marriage to the lady or ask her for an alliance.""What?"Chapter 4Earl stared at Gregg, eyes widened. "How could you suggest that?""Sometimes I can't help but wonder if you are the same person I know. Why do you look like you have seen a ghost? I mean, what's so wrong with what I just said?" Gregg folded his arms."Since we have the cure at our disposal, enough of it at that, don't you think the best thing we could do is to give it to her first before talking about what we want? I'm sure she would be glad to help." Earl said.Gregg laughed and placed one hand on his friend's shoulders, "You think so?" He asked again."It's what anyone would do, one good turn deserves another." Earl replied, folding his hands across his chest in a more relaxed posture now.Gregg laughed again, "You think she would willingly leave her own pack and bring her army of soldiers to fight Lambert and his Rogues for your little favor? Think again, Earl." Now, Earl was not very convinced he was right, "Well, if she has a good heart…" "By God, Earl! She's a woman,
Chapter 5After waiting anxiously for Earl without any sight of him, Kristen, who had been pacing the length of the large parlor where she and Laurel were ushered in by the maids turned to her sister. Throwing caution to the wind, she had known that coming here was a waste of time and she had not failed to point it out, but according to Laurel, everything was worth trying so here they were, waiting for hours for the Alpha of the New Knight Pack, who they had not seen or met before. The possibility of them getting any help from these people was very slim and she knew it, but she had been trying not to shatter her sister's hope."What if he doesn't come?" Kristen finally voiced her fear.Laurel sighed weakly, "We have to be optimistic, and it has not even been up to three hours since we have been here." She said despite herself, she was equally afraid that they might not get the help they came for, but someone had to be strong."How sure are we that the cure is even here, Laurel? Where
Chapter 6Back in the garden, Kristen paced up and down waiting anxiously for Laurel, she hoped it went well. As much as she hated to admit it, having thought it through, her own way might have led them to destruction. Alpha Earl was not stupid and neither was his Beta, the lives of those men she had proposed they take as hostage might well have meant nothing to the Alpha. What if after going through the trouble, the men ended up showing them the wrong leaves and they went home and realized they had wasted their time? She sighed for the umpteenth time only to hear the annoying voice from behind her,"Are you not going to have your seat?" Gregg asked for the tenth time."Are you deaf? Or maybe you don't hear well in the afternoon? I said to keep quiet. If you have nothing better to say, I will prefer that you stop talking!" Kristen snapped at him."I am just concerned. If it's any consolation, you don't have to worry about your sister. Earl doesn't bite." Gregg offered."I would sugges
Chapter 7Earl was anxiously pacing in the library as he waited for Gregg to come in. It had been a while since Lady Laurel Kris left, and he was not back. He was either calculating, hoping that the lady would change her mind and come back or Gregg would come in to tell him she had realized her mistake, but none of that happened. When Gregg finally came in, it was to shatter Earl's hope with the first question he asked."How did it go?" Gregg asked again, guessing correctly that everything had not gone as planned, especially with the way he had seen Laurel storm out of the place, fuming with anger. Earl eyed his friend angrily, "You know this is all your fault, right? I hate that innocent look on your face." Gregg gave a light chuckle. "I don't understand why you are angry. Relax, man. You did not just expect her to give in, did you?" "This is not a time for games, Gregg. We are under threat from Lambert and his Rogues, life and death to be precise. And the only shot we have at get
Chapter 8The next few days were very difficult ones for Laurel. It had been five days since she went to Earl for help, now the plague was spreading really fast. The other Packs around them were not ready to help, although they did not even have the cure. Even if they had the cure, they didn't show any sympathy. They only got a nod from them and some words of encouragement, which did nothing to change the deaths that plague the Sacred Moon pack."It is getting worse, Laurel. I am afraid there is nothing more we can do now." Kristen said ruefully. She had been going from Pack to Pack soliciting for help while Laurel was tasked with handling things in the pack."I guess there is nothing else we can do," Laurel said painfully."The Alpha Pack at the North instructed their gate to be locked to keep us out for fears of us coming in there and infecting them with it. Looks like most people know it is transmittable now.""That is not surprising, words spread really fast." Laurel said, the sad
Chapter 9There was nothing to prepare for the decision that Laurel Kris, the Alpha of the Sacred Moon pack had made to marry Earl Malory, Alpha of the New Knight Pack. She barely picked a shawl from her room and hurried out as soon as she entered, shouting orders at the guards by the door to prepare for a journey. Her mood was sour, but she knew that there were worse days ahead, at least for her. Laurel prayed silently, she doubted that she was doing the right thing, wished she could ask her Papa for directions one last time, but this was a child's dream and she knew that now. Kristen had told her she was now a ruler countless times and that she had to act like one but it was only dawning on her now. Laurel made for the horses which had already been prepared for the journey. She did not take anything with her, didn't even know if there was anything she had to take. Kristen followed closely behind her, one hand clutching tightly to her sword which was installed and strapped firmly t
Chapter 10The ride was a quiet one, with each person riding fast on their horses and only having one thing in mind- their direction and the outcome of the meeting ahead. Everyone had something to think about, families they left behind, friends they hoped to go back to meet alive and they all hoped their journey this time would not be in vain. Perhaps everyone was afraid, except one person, Rick Adams. He was a lonely man who was oftentimes considered emotionless. In his mid thirties, he was without a family, wife or siblings. He spent most of his days training young wolves who hoped to be great warriors someday. His emotionlessness and lack of feelings had gained him the position as the Gamma of the Sacred Moon pack. He had only one agenda, to protect the Lady Alpha and her family at all cost, because with them, the future of the pack was secured. Rick had spent the last fourteen years training Kristen how to be a good swordsman. And he was glad that that knowledge, fueled by her f
Chapter 11"What are you doing?" Kristen yelled after Laurel as she tried to catch up with her. "What do you mean?""What the hell are you doing with that man?!" "Letting him go." Laurel replied calmly. "I can see that, but why? Certainly not after they just killed one of our men and made our horses go agog and leaving us stranded in this bush?" Kristen said angrily. "We have killed a number if their men too, let him go back and tell his Master that we do not want trouble." "And you think he'll buy that?" "He will. This whole thing was a misunderstanding, they will realize it." Laurel said adamantly. Kristen stopped walking and turned around in anger. She ran her hand through her hair and kicked the grass in front of her. Laurel stopped to pacify her but she shifted out of her sister's reach. "Look Laurel, I know you are all about sending a message but we don't know these people. For all we know, they could be vampires or even just serial killers. We can't risk a war with anoth
Chapter 70 “Going somewhere?” Lambert’s voice cut through the air like a blade as soon as Earl and Gregg stepped outside. He was there— and not alone. Earl’s heart lurched at the sight before him. Lambert stood with a smug grin, holding Laurel tightly by the arm. Her eyes were wide with fear, her beautiful face pale and drawn. A group of Lambert’s rogues surrounded them, forming a protective circle around Lmabert to keep Earl or his men from attacking. .“Laurel!” Earl shouted, taking a step forward, but Lambert tightened his grip on her, making her wince.“Ah, ah, ah,” Lambert said, wagging a finger. “One more step, and she gets hurt.” We don’t want that, do we?” Gregg moved to stand beside Earl, his eyes darkening with anger. “Lambert, what do you want?”Lambert chuckled, his eyes gleaming with malice. “Isn’t it obvious? I want what is rightfully mine, I also want to live. And it turns out that to do that, I have to kill. And your precious Luna here,” he gestured to Laurel, “is
Chapter 69The clash of swords and the roar of wolves filled the air as Kristen and Gregg fought fiercely against Charles and his band of rogues. The forest clearing was littered with bodies, but the fucking rogues won’t stop coming. Some of Kristen’s men had returned in time to join the fight though, which was an added advantage. Kristen’s blade met Charles’s with a resounding clash, their faces inches apart as they strained against each other, “You stupid idiot,” Kristen hissed, “I knew you were up to no good!” “You think you can win this?” Charles sneered, pushing against her sword. “You’re just like your father—weak.”Kristen’s eyes blazed with fury. “Don’t you dare speak of him, you bastard!”Charles grinned maliciously, his eyes glinting with a cruel satisfaction. “You know, it was my father who planted the flu that killed your dear old dad.”Kristen’s eyes widened in disbelief, “You didn’t—“Charles smirked, “It was supposed to make Laurel marry me so I could become Alpha. Bu
Chapter 68 Earl was well away from New Knight by the time his wolf started whining and he became restless. He didn’t know what else to do, so he simply dismissed it, thinking it was merely happening because his mate was unconscious. He tried talking to Gregg through the mindlink but nothing was working, it was either his Beta had disappeared from the face of this earth or he simply didn’t want to be found. Not knowing where else to find Gregg since he had combed through almost every nook and cranny of the pack and even sent a few guards to look for him, he simply dismissed Astrid’s words as mere lies to get him to leave Laurel alone with her. Panic. Simultaneously, a sharp pain tore through his heart and he doubled over on the floor, clutching his chest tightly as the pain increased. It felt like someone was twisting his insides with a trident and something was being torn from him, something very essential. Just then, he felt the metallic taste of blood in his mouth and a shrill
Chapter 67"I was really hoping we could hunt together tonight." Gregg told Kristen as she fastened the button on her pants and tucked a few strands of hair behind her ear. "And I just told you I'm not hunting today." She replied with a livid tone. "Then can I stay here with you?" He asked again with an hopeful glint in his voice."No."She said it vehemently, shattering the heart he didn't know he had to tiny pieces. His wolf whined inside him and for some reason, he felt like he had just been rejected by the very person who was supposed to accept and cherish him. "But Kris–" She turned cold eyes on him and he frowned, "Get up and leave, Gregg. I have a lot to do and I can't do that with you here." "But it’s full moon today, we can just leave the world behind and let our wolves have fun. Besides," he nodded towards the spot where he had just taken a considerable amount of her blood from her neck, "You'll need to replenish that." Subconsciously, her hand flew to the spot on her
Chapter 66All through the run back home, Earl was mentally beating himself for his own foolishness. How could he have lost himself like that? He looked down at Laurel only to find her eyes still shut and her lips quivering slightly. He thanked his stars at least that she was moving now, few minutes ago she had been totally unresponsive. This was the first time she was fainting after a bout of sex, and he knew then that he must have been too rough. What was he saying? His wolf was too greedy with her blood. Even right now, he had to try really hard to avoid looking at her neck. The spot where he had marked her was not healing, and the mark, which was still trailing with blood looked like it was almost calling out to him. When he reached the house that night, almost everywhere was silent. He ran inside, looking frantically about for any sign of life, just anyone to take care of her in her condition. But it seemed like everyone had gone hunting for the full moon. "Fuck!" He muttered
Chapter 65 The pack run was all that it should be, thousands of wolves gathered in packs, howling and growling their praises to the Moon Goddess. Earl was expected to address the pack regardless of his anger, and he did. Laurel was there to encourage him even though they were both mad at each other. After the short speech to the pack members warning them to avoid any contact with rogues or hunting near rogue territory, he led Laurel to his secret spot. She followed him silently, without asking any questions, perhaps it was due to the itching in her gum or the heat she was feeling at his nearness. The ache in his heart was still there, only subsiding a bit because of the full moon and the fact that his wolf was slowly taking over his human side.As Alphas, they could control when and how they shifted into their wolf form, except of course when the male was in too much heat and the female was around or when the mate bond was too strong like right now. "Where are you?" Earl mindlinked
Chapter 64"What the hell do you mean by that nonsense you just said?" Astrid did not flinch, she merely watched Earl with cloudy eyes,as if daring him to strangle her. Channeling his wolf, Earl let his eyes watch her fiercely, more like he was searching for something, some sort of recognition or rejection perhaps. But instead of the ferocious urge to tear her apart, limb by limb, he felt a strange warmth in his heart, a need to comfort and be comforted. The desire was so strong that he threw Astrid down with a force that startled even him. Laurel ran to his side and he grabbed her and shoved her forcefully to himself, eliciting a loud gasp from Laurel. "What is wrong with you?" She asked with genuine concern. But even before she could complete the sentence, Earl crashed his lips forcefully on hers and kissed her. Even as she whimpered and her wolf whined in his hand, he didn't stop. Whatever it was that touching Astrid had stirred in his wolf, he hoped to hell that kissing his mat
Chapter 63Two weeks slipped by pretty fast, they were the most peaceful days for Laurel since her marriage with Earl. She and Earl spent most of the evenings in their room, because well, for some reasons, they couldn't seem to keep their hands off each other. Astrid told her once that she was in heat, which usually happens when a wolf finds his mate and accepts the mate bond, their desire for each other during this period is usually almost insatiable.Laurel particularly could not seem to get enough of Earl, and he in turn could smell her heat from as far as he possible. Those two weeks were blissful, almost like it was their honeymoon but there was also this nagging feeling that something terrible would happen soon enough. Which was why Earl and Gregg were working on reinforcing the pack gates and the soldiers in preparation for any possible surprise attacks from Lambert. Hayley was sleeping that evening when Astrid came running into the room. Earl had left a while earlier, so it
Chapter 62She couldn't lose him, Asher thought idly as she ran the rest of the way through the familiar paths. He was the only ticket she had to get out of her misery, the only guaranteed way she could get her brother back. How could he do this to her? She had waited this long to have him, waited this long only to be rejected and treated in a sick manner! He would have killed her if she hadn't come when she did. And the way his eyes softened when he saw her, the way his wolf calmed. Fuck! The sexually provocative way she had talked to him and the way he carried her back to the room. How could he? She clutched her chest as she reached the gate and tried to wipe the tears she didn't know had started dropping with the back of her hand. "Let me in." She told the first guard she met there. "He didn't tell us you were coming." The guard said stubbornly."That is because he didn't know I was coming.""Then why are you here?" "Because I have news, urgent news that cannot wait for the us
