Clara was pleased to hear confirmation that she was going to get revenge against those who had hurt her. It gave her some hope that everything would work out for her despite the odd circumstances.

She smiled to herself and Caiden patted her head. It was an strangely tender gesture from a demon.

“I would like to say that what I can see is far in the future. It’s going to take some time to build up to it. Are you willing to do that?” Caiden asked.

Clara didn’t like the idea of waiting a long time to get revenge, she didn’t feel patient right now. She thought about the portrayals of revenge she had seen in popular media. Some people waited a very long time to get revenge and the phrase ‘revenge is a dish best served cold' was often thrown around.

She could wait a while so she could perfect her revenge against everyone who had driven her to death.

“That’s fine as long as I eventually get revenge,” she replied.

***

Breakfast was a simple meal of toast, fruit and orange juice. Clara enjoyed it despite the simplicity and spent the time wondering about her visitor. Caiden had disappeared when the nurse arrived with her breakfast so she had been unable to ask him any more questions.

"Clarissa, you’ve got a visitor. He’s your grandfather,” Anna announced when she came back. “I’ll take your tray now and leave you two in peace.”

A man walked into the room and Clara looked at him curiously. Her new grandfather looked to be around 70 with a lined face and white hair. She could tell that he had been a very attractive man in his youth and he was still handsome now.

“I’ve been waiting for you to wake up,” he said and pulled her in for a tight hug.

“I’m awake now,” she replied unsurely.

She didn’t know if the doctor would have told her grandfather about her lack of memories. It would be easier if he had. It felt like it was going to be hard to lie to this person. He came across as someone who could detect lies.

He let go of her and she could tell he was looking at the bandages on her arms.

“I’m sorry for going away for such a long time. I’m never going on a business trip ever again,” he promised sincerely. “My granddaughter is worth more than a business deal.”

“I’m fine now. Don’t worry...” her voice broke.

It was difficult to tell him that there was nothing to worry about. Clarissa wasn’t fine. Clarissa was dead and she was an impersonator in his granddaughter’s body. She hadn’t been expecting to feel guilty like this. James St. Clair would never know that his real granddaughter was dead.

“I am going to worry about this for the rest of my life,” James said and went to pull her in for another hug before pausing suddenly. “I spoke to the doctor before coming to see you. Is it true that you can’t remember anything? I should have asked earlier; I was just so glad to see you awake that I didn’t think.”

Clara nodded. She knew she was going to disappoint Clarissa’s grandfather by not remembering him. As expected, his face fell.

“I see. I am your grandfather and you live with me,” he told her. “My name is James St. Clair and I've been looking after you since you were a baby. Do I look familiar?”

“You do,” she said with a brief smile.

James perked up visibly.

“That’s good. The doctor said your memories may return soon.”

“I hope they do,” she replied.

It was a shame Caiden wasn’t around now. He might prompt her with some suitable things to say. There was an awkward air in the room now. Clarissa’s grandfather was reluctant to make eye contact with her and looked like he didn’t know what to say.

“Do you know why I’m here?” she asked. “The doctor didn’t want to tell me yesterday and I only saw him for a minute this morning.”

James averted his eyes and she could tell that he was unwilling to tell her that she had tried to commit suicide. She appreciated that. Caiden had been right about James St. Clair being a loving grandfather.

“You came very close to dying by your own hand,” he said cautiously. “In some ways, it might be best if you don’t remember anything, you might be happier that way.”

Clara couldn’t refute that.

“I should have noticed you weren’t happy before,” he continued with a sigh. “I run a big company and my time isn’t split well between the business and you. I am going to do better for you now. You are my only blood relation and I need to take care of you.”

“I’m sure you will,” she replied. “Do you know when I’m leaving the hospital?”

Now that she was more adjusted to her new surroundings and body, she wanted to explore. She had never been outside of the US before. Now she was in a completely different country and she was stuck in a hospital. There had been lots of international school trips available at Trinity Academy, but the fees for them had been way out of her reach as a poor scholarship student.

“The doctor didn’t tell me, you are under observation for now,” James said. “There was a lot of concern that you weren’t going to wake up. It was a long time to be unconscious. You never showed any signs of life when I visited. I wish I had been here when you woke up.”

The cause of that long period of unconsciousness was probably Clarissa’s soul giving out and leaving her body. Caiden had said there was a time limit on transferring her soul. It was likely that the human body didn’t stay alive for long without a soul.

“I’m here now,” she replied. “I’m looking forward to getting out of here. Is the bill going to be large?”

James looked confused.

“There isn’t going to be a bill. Why would there be?”

Clara remembered all too late that she was in England right now. Healthcare in the UK was free. She needed to get Clarissa’s memories before she showed any more signs of being secretly American.

“I was confused for a moment and thought of American hospital bills,” she said with a nervous laugh.

James nodded slowly and she could tell that he was still puzzled.

“No, it’s all free. I would like to recommend that you undergo some counselling after you have been discharged. I don’t want anything like this to ever happen again.”

***

She was discharged from the hospital four days later. It was such a relief to walk outside and feel the wind on her skin. Clara stood outside the hospital with her arms outstretched for a few minutes whilst her new grandfather waited patiently nearby.

When she felt a chill, she put her arms back down and looked back at James.

“It must feel nice after being cooped up in that hospital room,” he commented with a gentle smile. “I feel almost sorry that we’re getting in a car to get home.”

James was very nice old man based on her observations from the past four days. Caiden had said it wasn’t the right time to give her Clarissa’s memories yet.

She had been annoyed, but unable to protest. He was the one with the power. She had just been very careful not to say anything that sounded overly American. It had been hard and she had caught James giving her confused looks every now and then.

James led her across the car park to his car. It was a sleek car that was clearly expensive. Clara had seen a lot of cars like that waiting outside Trinity Academy to pick up the rich students. It was odd to think she now had that luxury.

He opened the passenger door for her and Clara climbed in. The leather seating was nice and soft. James closed the door and walked around to the other side. Clara was confused until she saw the driver in the front seat. James was a millionaire and millionaires didn’t usually drive their own cars.

“Good afternoon, Miss. St. Clair, I’m glad to see you’ve recovered,” the driver said to her politely.

“Thank you,” she replied.

James patted her shoulder. The driver pulled out of the parking space and they were on their way home. Clara was intrigued to see where she would be living now. It had to be luxurious like the car and the clothes she was wearing.

Her grandfather had given her a selection of clothes to wear earlier. The clothes all had labels indicating they were from a St. Clair collection. They felt high quality and looked stylish. It was odd to wear such expensive clothes.

The drive home was highly fascinating for Clara. The car was driving on the left side of the road which had felt out of place at first. The scenery constantly caught her attention and she spent the whole car journey staring out the window. Everything was so different to the US.

She could tell they were getting close to their destination when the view outside became large houses with ornate gardens. The car soon stopped in front of a gate and the driver leaned out of the window to input a code. The gate opened and the car went up a long and winding driveway. Clara held her breath as she waited for the house to appear.

When the house became visible, she wasn’t disappointed in the slightest. The house looked like it had come out of the most expensive section of a property magazine. It had three floors, several balconies and ivy crawling across the Victorian stonework. There was even a fountain in the front garden.

Clara felt a spark of excitement. She was going to be experiencing the rich life after so many years of being on the lowest financial rung. She was definitely going to get her revenge in this body. Caiden was right in his decision to transplant her soul to Clarissa’s body.

In that moment, everything felt perfect to her.

James opened her door for her and she stepped onto the gravel and followed him up the path to the house. The front door opened and there was a tall woman with red hair standing in the doorway.

The look the woman was giving her made her feel like she was a poor scholarship student again and she hadn’t escaped her grey life.

She quickly realised she had been naïve. Clarissa had lived in an expensive house and worn fancy clothes and had still wanted to die. Her body was telling her that it was something to do with this woman.

“Hello Clara,” the red-haired woman greeted with a snide smile. “I am glad to see you survived your near-death experience. I thought I would never see you again.” Clara felt a chill down her spine from the mysterious woman’s words. She had to be someone who had tormented the real Clarissa. Her body was telling her to run. “I don’t know you,” Clara said plainly and walked past the woman. “Beryl, I thought I said to greet Clara later,” James said sharply. “Did you forget? I don’t want her to get overwhelmed by lots of new faces.” Clara looked back at the woman. Now she had a name to put to the face. Beryl was a good actress; she did look like she was sorry. There was still an insincere look in her eyes despite the apologetic expression on her face. “I forgot, sorry,” Beryl said. “I’ll pop by later to say hello to her.” Clara hoped that she wouldn’t. She didn’t know why Beryl was standing there. James had said there were staff members who worked in the house, but it didn’t fee

Caiden nodded in reply. Clara could tell that he was pleased with her answer. It also felt like he had been expecting her to say that.“I thought you would say that when you saw Clarissa’s memories,” he said. “I will leave now so you can shower in peace. We can talk about revenge later.”He let go of her hand and promptly disappeared. By now Clara was used to the quick disappearing act and didn’t bother to wonder where he had gone. She returned to the bathroom and gave the bath a wide berth. It wasn’t the same bath Clarissa had used as she had been in a guest bathroom, but it was still a bath.Instead, she picked out a shampoo for dyed hair and a hair mask and had a long shower, being careful not to get the covered knife slash wounds wet. Feeling the hot water against her matted hair and sweaty skin was cathartic for her and she felt r

Clara found it hard to continue the conversation after finding out that Beryl was even worse than she had imagined. “Maria, I’m feeling tired now,” she said. “Talking about Beryl tires me out.” “You go and have a rest, dear,” Maria said kindly. “I will make your favourite for dinner to welcome you back. We can talk about this when you’re much better.” Clara walked back to her bedroom with Caiden in tow. As soon as the door was closed, she turned to him. “What happened on that day? Clarissa’s memories weren’t very clear. Why does Beryl want Clarissa dead?” She sat on her bed and Caiden sat down next to her. Clara didn’t bother to complain about how close he was. She would probably appreciate his close presence when she heard the truth. “Beryl dragged Clarissa into that bathroom after demeaning her verbally, gave her the knife and told her that she probably couldn’t even manage to take her own life properly,” Caiden explained. “As for her motive. It’s very simple; she wants m

Clara’s reaction to that line was to throw her pen at Caiden. He disappeared before it could hit him and she was left glaring at empty space. She sighed and picked her pen off the floor. Sometimes he was very annoying, but most of the time he was oddly kind for a demon. She still didn’t quite know what to make of the demon she was bonded to. She looked down at her notes again. Revenge didn’t seem as easy now that she knew she would have to somehow get hold of all the evidence needed to prove Beryl’s wrongdoing. How was she going to do that by herself? To obtain James’ financial records she would either have to ask him, ask his financial advisor or somehow steal them herself. She sighed and closed her notebook. There was no chance any of them were possible. James might love his granddaughter, but he was never going to disclose very personal financial information to her and neither would his financial advisor. She needed to ask Caiden for more advice. He would know a way to ge

Clara didn’t quite know what to say to that. It was no wonder that he hadn’t mentioned this plan earlier, he knew she wouldn’t like it.“I have to flirt with this hacker to convince him to help me?” she asked just to make sure she had heard correctly. Caiden shrugged. “I was only joking. He will accept money; he needs it and he will most definitely think something is strange if you flirt with him.”Clara threw her pen at him again. This time Caiden side stepped it instead of disappearing.“I was trying to lighten the tone,” he protested. “You need to stop throwing things at me.”Clara knew that he was doing his best to distract her from everything. After all it was her first day with Clarissa’s memories. She didn’t even know if she was going to sleep well tonight. Sl

Caiden frowned and he checked her future again. It was still the same vision. Something had happened to change Clara’s end from a simple soul handover to a make out scene. He moved to stand next to Clara to see if there were any changes in her appearance. It was evident that she looked a little happier now. She looked up at him curiously and he failed to see any sign of attraction in her eyes. There was no chance she wanted to kiss him passionately on the lips like she had in his vision of the future. Maybe her interaction with Arthur Wang had changed her future. He was a potential future romantic interest for her. Perhaps she opened her heart to romance in the future before her end and that led to their kiss. He reminded himself that her future would change slightly over time due to natural shifts. Clara giving up her soul to him was a guaranteed event because they had bonded and had made a contract together. The vision that he was currently seeing could also change again at a

Clara fought the urge to throw the menu at Caiden. It was almost a shame he wasn’t visible in the human world. If she retaliated now, she would look completely crazy. The demon swanned over to her side to whisper in her ear. “Remember I can see your future. I know everything.” “Thank you,” she said sweetly to Arthur. “Perhaps I can just buy you food instead.” She did her best to ignore Caiden. He really felt like a demon right now. There was an evil glint in his eyes. She focused her attention on Arthur. Caiden didn’t deserve to have any of her attention right now. Arthur smiled at her. “That sounds good. It really doesn’t feel right to accept money from you.” Clara could understand his thinking in some way. He had known Clarissa since he was 11 and had experienced a crush on her at some point. It would be awkward to let her pay him with money. She smiled back him and she began to get the feeling that Arthur might still have a crush on Clarissa from the spark in his eyes. T

Clara narrowed her eyes. Just when she thought Caiden was less annoying, he came out with something like this.“I don’t think being able to tell when someone is flirting with me is going to help with my final goal,” she snapped and removed her hand from his hair.“There was someone at Trinity Academy who liked you in your first life,” Caiden told her. That was enough to pique Clara’s curiosity. Then she remembered that it didn’t really matter because Clara was dead and she considered everyone at Trinity Academy to be a bully in one way or another. “Well, they didn’t do anything to save me so I don’t care who they are,” she replied. She was sure she would have been interested in this titbit of information before she had died. Now her only focus was revenge.&

“I’m getting married!” Clara announced happily. She smiled over her coffee and Arthur watched her with a bemused look on his face. "When is the wedding?" he asked. “Next month,” Clara told him. “I was planning to invite you. We’ve only just decided on the date so there’s no invitations to give out yet.” “Do you not have wedding planner then?” the hacker questioned. “Invitations are normally sent out much sooner.” “I don’t want a big wedding,” Clara replied. “James was fine with it and just asked that I invite him.” She was a little surprised that her grandfather had agreed with her desire to have a very small wedding. They both enjoyed high positions in society and people like them normally had grand weddings with a long guest list and a high budget. “I shall consider an invite as a great honour then,” Arthur quipped. “How many guests are invited?” “I’m inviting 12 people,” Clara said. “Caiden has invited a couple of friends. He doesn’t have any relations to invite.” “Of cour

Their first month of dating passed by quickly. They soon fell into a routine of meeting after work and going on dates. Clara was blissfully happy, but she knew they needed to discuss their future together. Caiden was only living temporarily in the UK after all. She chose to ask after they had finished eating Caiden’s latest attempt at a home cooked romantic meal. His cooking skills were unique to say the least. “Are you going to stay here in London when your job here is finished?” she asked. “Where would you like to live?” he questioned. “Here or in a different country? We have lots of options.” Clara thought about the matter seriously. She had grown up in the US and had been unexpectedly pulled into a different country. She did prefer living in the UK, but there were other countries to try as well. “We can move around,” Clara said. “I think we should make this our main country and travel to other places. That is if you want to. This is a decision we should make as a couple.” Ca

Clara kept a careful watch on the office building opposite so she wouldn’t miss seeing Caiden leave when his work day had finished. She had already missed seeing him before, she wasn’t going to do it again. Fortunately, he was one of the first people out of the building and Clara immediately began to pack up everything she had brought with her. Caiden entered the coffeeshop and beamed when he saw her waiting by the door. “Excellent. You’re ready to leave on our date,” he said and held his hand out to her. “Can we take a diversion first?” she requested. It was only fair to let Arthur know that she had found Caiden, but she had decided a text wouldn’t suffice and it was better to let them meet in person. “Will it take long?” “I want to introduce you to someone,” she explained. “Arthur has been helping me look for you and I think he would like to see the success of our search.” Caiden looked thoughtful and then he nodded. “I would like to meet him. When Clara finally looked up from her phone and glanced back at the door, the person she had been waiting for had already left. She had missed a lot in the two minutes her attention had been diverted.A member of staff approached her table with a cup of coffee in her hand. Clara looked around in confusion. “I didn’t order anything,” she said. Clara was aware that she was the strangest customer in the coffeeshop and the staff were probably wondering when she was going to leave. She had been the first customer of the day and had only ordered two drinks in the past three hours. “One of our regulars came in a couple of minutes ago to pick up his online order. He saw you looking tired and bought an expresso for you,” the staff member explained with a smile. “He’s a nice person.” Clara blinked in surprise. She had never noticed any of the customers paying attention to her. The incident must have occurred when she had been occupied with her phone. She checked the name tag on the girl’s

The weeks quickly turned into months and soon an entire year had passed. Clara had taken a position at St. Clair that had enabled her to travel around the world just so she would have better chance of finding Caiden. She returned to the family mansion on the anniversary of her return from the demon realm after an unsuccessful trip to New York. Her actual work had gone well, she just hadn’t found any signs of Caiden in the city. There hadn’t been any traces of Caiden in any of the 10 countries she had travelled to over the past year. He didn’t have any presence on the internet either and Clara didn’t have any idea of how she could improve her search methods. Clara collapsed onto her bed and closed her eyes. She was physically and emotionally exhausted from her search. Despite everything, she wasn’t going to give up. She would sleep for a while and then she would look at other highly populated places to visit. “Clara Kennedy.” Clara’s eyes opened immediately at the sound of

Clara landed on the floor of her bedroom alone and fully aware of the gravity of the situation. She didn’t have Caiden at her side anymore. She needed to find him for that to happen. Clara stood up and realised that her legs were shaking. She had been feeling intimidated by the demon king and had refused to let him know. Now her nerves and lack of sleep had got to her. She took a deep breath to calm down. She had vowed that she would be able to find Caiden and she needed to start working on that. One person came to mind immediately. Arthur would be able to help her. She took her phone out of her pocket and called him. “...Hello?” Arthur asked cautiously when he picked up the call. Clara realised he had assumed that the phone call was someone else using her phone to inform him of her death. “It’s me, Clara,” she told him immediately. “Things have changed. Can we meet up? I have a lot to tell you.” “Of course,” he said. “I think we'll need to go somewhere that allows for private c

Caiden was lost for words as he watched the events that he had foreseen so many times play out in front of him. It was no longer a vision of the future; it was happening in reality. It was finally the end of Clara’s life. Her soul floated in front of him as her eyes slowly closed. Caiden made his decision in that moment. He grabbed hold of Clara’s soul with his hands and pushed it back into her. Despite being very light, her soul wouldn’t move until he exerted all of his power. Clara’s eyes snapped open when her soul returned to her. “...What’s going on?” she asked breathlessly. “I can’t take your soul,” Caiden admitted. “I want you to keep it.” He had no real idea what was going to happen now. The contract had not been fulfilled properly. He had completed his part of the contract and he had stopped Clara from fulfilling her part. There was no precedent to follow here. He was the first demon to refuse a soul. “What’s going to happen to both of us?” Clara questioned weakl

Clara knew that her grandfather was confused to hear her sentimental words. They rarely talked about their personal feelings. “I haven’t been the best grandfather,” James replied with a deep frown. “I brought Beryl here to be your mother figure as I had felt that it would prevent you from becoming like my daughter. It turned out to be the worst decision I have ever made.” Clara could not deny that James’ decision to date Beryl and bring her into the family had been lethal for Clarissa. She decided to focus on something else. “Thank you for rescuing me when I was a baby,” she said. “I’m sure Clara would also thank you for looking for her.” “You don’t need to thank me for that,” James replied. “I would also like to thank you for taking me in instead of leaving me to the care system,” Clara continued. She didn’t know much about the British care system, but it was likely similar to the American one she had lived through. She had been lucky to be adopted by a decent set of foster pa

“It was a good ride,” Arthur said with a wink. “You kept me guessing for so many years. I’m so pleased to finally know what was going on the entire time.” Clara relaxed. The hardest part was over now. “Is everything over now?” he asked a moment later. “You’ve brought all of your targets down apart from Xavier King.” “It is,” she confirmed. Arthur nodded and then he looked deep in thought. He coughed awkwardly before speaking again. “Where did Clarissa go if you are in her body?” he questioned. Clara had been expecting this question. Arthur was the only person who had a connection to Clarissa and knew that she was using her body. It would have been odd if he didn’t ask where Clarissa had gone. “...She died when she committed suicide four years ago,” she explained. “Her body was alive for a short time and I was put into it. I’m sorry to tell that she died all that time ago.” Arthur frowned and looked away. “I see... That’s sad,” he said. “It’s odd to hear that Clariss
