Cross POV
It was dusk already, yet Mulan was yet to reach out to me, not like I expected her to do so. Foremost, I was a stand in groom for her and I was crippled; which sane girl with her amount of beauty would agree to be a bride to a cripple. That was my thought but still, I couldn't hold myself back from reaching out to her. From our conversation, I knew at once that all was not well with her and this was confirmed when she arrived a few minutes ago. Though I was worried, I didn't show. “I should help you.” She suggested as I tried to lift myself off the wheelchair. “I never solicited your help.” I snapped back at her, pulling a brown envelope to myself. When she wouldn't join me on the couch, I patted the spot next to me but she chose the couch which was adjacent, giving me ample distance. After going through the document, I passed it to her. While she read through the lines, I never allowed my eyes to leave hers even for a second as I wanted to see every bit of her emotions. “I don't have anything to lose.” She said as she scribbled her signature on the document. Without any doubt, it was apparent that she had given up already. Her actions were a testament to this. Relieving her of the document, I placed my signature too before replacing the content of the envelope. In a bid to start up a conversation with her, I cleared my throat to get her attention and when I did, I asked, “Are you hungry?” As expected, her eyes went straight to my feet. Well, I was used to this so I didn't take any offense. “Show me the kitchen, I will make dinner.” She offered as she slowly pulled herself to her feet. “It's not hard to find.” I said with disinterest, reaching out for the remote which was next to me. Instead of flaring up because of the way I had treated her, a smile crept to her lips. “I will be back in half an hour.” She forced a smile at me and then took her leave. Certain she was out of ear shot, I reached out to my phone and then dialed Percy’s phone. The moment the lines connected, I asked, “What are you doing?” My voice was stern. Having analyzed her carefully, I was fully convinced that her plan didn't fall through. “I’m currently at the hospital.” He replied. “The surgery started about half an hour ago.” He added. When I didn't respond, he cleared his throat, “I was going to initiate the call at the end of a successful surgery.” “Hey Kaiser…” Mulan's voice interrupted and at once I snapped my head in her direction, wondering what she wanted. “Can you help me out here?” “A minute.” The moment she took her leave, I resumed my conversation with Percy. “Are you there?” I asked. “Yeah!” “What about the other stuff I asked you to handle?” “It's complex but I’m still working on it.” Mulan poked her face through the door and so without wasting more time, I hung up. Now in the kitchen with her, I expected she would start bombarding me with questions but she was mute as she diced the veggies. She must have wanted me to keep her company. I should have ignored her — I mumbled, filling up a glass with water. “What's your occupation?” She asked, casting me a glance before she resumed what she was doing. “A remote worker.” I said after a long silence. Talking about myself to people was one of my biggest challenges and so I always found it difficult to give a response when I was being asked. If it was someone else, I would have ignored her but since we had six months to spend together, it would only be fair if she knows a little about me. “What about you?” I asked though I already knew the answer to that. With a shrug, she said, “I lost my job but I already sent out my applications.” “I will definitely get a job before the new week ends.” She spoke with so much confidence that made a little smile appear on the side of my lips but I quickly wiped it off before she noticed. “I'm not supposed to ask a sensitive question of this sort but I’m curious…” I didn't give her the chance to finish speaking before I cut in. “An accident that was meant to take my life decided to go for my legs instead.” I spoke through my teeth as I grabbed the wheel of my chair. “That wasn't what I wanted to ask.” I was already at the door when she said this. Reluctantly, I pushed my chair backwards, locking eyes with her. “Then what?” “You're bitter, why is that?” Taken aback by her question, I couldn't speak as I was tongue tied. Mulan was the first person that had pointed this out to me, not even Percy, my closest ally. “It’s fine if you don't have a response.” She spoke in a dismissive manner and with her back turned on me. Digging my teeth into my lower lips, I grabbed the arm of my chair, trying hard to keep my anger in check as my chest rose and fell in rhythm. “We aren't close enough for you to say that to me.” I snarled only to start wheeling my chair out of the kitchen hurriedly. “Hey Kaiser,” She called out to me but I was too angry to respond. To my disdain, I heard a soft chuckle emitting from the kitchen. Turning around, I saw a bright smile tugging the side of her lips. “What?” “It's going to be fun after all.” Her soft chuckle rented the air, making me feel uncomfortable while making my skin crawl. “I will fix your legs, you just wait.” She smacked her lips passing me a wink. Confused, I raised my brow, urging her to speak but she ignored me completely.Mulan's POV At the end of dinner, I mustered up the courage to visit my mother for the last time but each time I got to the door, I always made a u-turn. “Ugh! What am I going to do now?" I muttered, sending my teeth into my lower lips in frustration. Bidding mom farewell was the least I could do at this point but it made me look like a bad and worthless child. The more I thought of it, the more terrified I became. “Mom will never forgive me." I mouthed Shutting my eyes tightly with my head tossed backwards, I added, “If I was in her place, she would do everything within her power to make sure I got an operation but…” Tears began to roll down my eyes as my heart constricted against my chest. Several times I was tempted to call father for help but I couldn't bring myself to do it, not after the situation that had put me in. But nevertheless, I was going to get back at them no matter what happens. “You said you were going to see your mom, you’re still here." Kaiser's voice bro
Cross' POV Despite my delayed response to her questions, mother wouldn't give up the call and it was pissing me off. She kept asking about my welfare like I was a child and a whole lot of personal questions I don't want to talk about. “Mom, that's enough." I snapped, slamming my palm against the table in anger. “Cross." She yelled on the other end causing me to roll my eyes in anger. “We’re worried about you son. Your father and I are worried, we don't know where the hell you are, you use a burner phone while speaking with us… even the vice chairman of your company doesn't know the whereabouts of you and Percy.” “Do you care about him now?" I asked through my teeth. “I can't find both of you." She sobbed. “That’s why you should quit trying to find us. Stick your nose to the ground and mind your business." I was about to hang up on her when she snapped at me. “What about on the weekend, can I see you even if it's for an hour?" Her voice trembled as she spoke. “Mom…” "Cross p
Mulan’s POV The frustration in Kaiser's face made me feel nothing but pity towards him and I wish I could be of help to him.Trailing after him, I allowed my thoughts to run wild. I only returned to my senses when I almost bumped into a gurney. “Be careful ma’am." The nurse said and then went her way. By the time I raised my head, Kaiser was already in front of the elevator with Percy standing right next to him.For some reason, I couldn't help but to think something interesting was going on between those two. Their chemistry was more than that of a boss and worker; there was more to it. "Come on Mulan, you already have a lot on your plate, interfering won't do any good.” I gritted my teeth, hurrying towards them. “I will be heading back to work now." I announced as the elevator door slid shut. “I will drop you off." Percy offered and a bright smile spread across my lips in appreciation. Since it was my first day at work, I didn't have much to do after I was shown around the c
Mulan's POV $50,000 is a whole lot of money. At the moment, I had only $4,500 and I got that from Kaiser when he caught me bemoaning about my fare for that week. Mom, on the other hand, was healing perfectly and speedily and for that, I was immensely grateful. The only issue I had was tracing the benevolent man that paid for her hospital fee and deposited some money in her account for her medications and others. “Ms. Mulan, you have zoned out again." Jax drummed his fingers against the table, snapping me out of my revive. Wiping the sweat off my forehead, I grabbed my pen pretending to be busy with work but a soft chuckle from Jax made me halt my pretense. “I'm sorry, I will…” I filtered off, avoiding his gaze. "Do you want a break or something? I can talk to the chairman on your behalf…” He didn't need to complete his words before I slammed my palm against the table. Flashing a smile at him, I pushed my hair off my face, "What do you want me to do?”If Jax reports my constan
Mulan's POV How did he find out I was looking for ways to give him his feet back? — I pondered, my gaze still on the door. Something about him was off. His charisma and attitude wasn't that of an average person. “It seems like he was born with a silver spoon, I'm sure of it." I mumbled, my gaze still fixated on the door. Even after retiring to my room which was door away, I just couldn't get my mind off him. Lowering myself on the edge of my bed, I had my hands clasped together, staring into space. “Kaiser Walker.” I murmured.Suddenly, it clicked and at once, I pulled my phone out of my purse and then typed in his name on the search engine. “Ugh! What was I thinking?" I mumbled, staring at the screen prompt. There was no result concerning his name but yet, I felt he was born with a silver spoon and also he was a man of influence. “It still doesn't make sense." I ratted out.Now pacing about my room with my hands crossed on my chest, I said, “If indeed he was born with a si
Mulan's POV Though Kaiser didn't say a word after catching me in the act, I was duly embarrassed. Each time I recalled the look he sent my way, my stomach would churn in protest as I facepalmed myself for being nosy. Since it was the weekend, I decided to get some groceries and a few things from the mall and also get Kaiser's medication. After paying for my purchased items, I began to head towards the exit door only for someone to block my path.At first I thought it was a mistake but when he kept making it impossible for me to walk through, I raised my head only to lock eyes with Tristan. “I thought I wasn't going to see you again, but here you are." He spoke in his carefree manner, trying to touch me but I veered backward, not after slapping his hand off my face. With a deep frown, I scowled, “What do you want?"“Come on Mulan, I know you are mad at me." He paused, pushing his hands into his pockets. After looking around for a while, he leaned in and with his hot breath fannin
Cross’ POVGlaring at my ringing phone, I grasped the arm of my wheelchair in anger and also to restrict myself from doing something I would regret. For the past hour, my mother has been trying to reach me non stop. It has been two weeks now since I promised to meet up with her by the weekend, yet I haven't fulfilled my part of the bargain, not like I intended to in the first place. When my phone wouldn't stop ringing, I grabbed it and was about to toss it under my pillow when her voice came through. “Ugh!" I sighed in frustration. In my rage, I had mistakenly received her call.“Cross, are you alright?" She asked, I could imagine her leaning over the table wherever she was at the moment with a worried look stamped on her face. “You're a pain in the ass." I said through my teeth. “I know right?" She chuckled like it was even funny. After a brief silence, she said, “About our date, when am I going to see you? Your father had been eager ever since I told him that you agreed to c
Reader’s POV From the first day Mulan stepped her feet into NexaCorp as an assistant to the chairman who was almost non-existent, Jax was curious. Several times, he has tried getting Cross to explain his relationship with her but he always hung up before he could complete his questioning. He never replied to his personal emails too but still Jax wouldn't give up. His suspicion skyrocketed when he discovered that Mulan was searching actively for an ostectomy procedure. Fully aware that she wasn't going to tell him whom she was doing it for, he decided to do a background check on her, giving rise to a new discovery that he held onto. The only reason why he was acting nice to her was so he could get close to her and then through her, he would be able to bring down her family for what they did to the Voss ten years ago. As for the ostectomy procedure, he decided to find out exactly who needed it and this prompted him into attempting to drive her home. The opportunity came when he
Mulan's POV The next day at work, Jax brought in a pile of files and with a huff, he dropped them on my table. “You didn't say anything when I was laying my complaint yesterday." He said, crossing his hands on his chest with his legs crossed. “What complaint?" I asked, peering at him for a while before I resumed what I was doing. “Working for a ghost boss." He spat out, a smile forming on my lips that instant. “I thought you dropped the complaint yesterday." Pouting, I added, “I give it to you, you have a knack for nagging." “Is that what you’re going to say?" He asked through his teeth. He was livid and I had no idea why he was reacting this way. “I'm used to it, I have no reason to complain.” I shrugged, making him flare up again. When he finally got down from his high horses, with a calm but firm voice, I said, "It's not as if we were with our so-called boss yesterday.” "There is no point complaining when the person you are directing your frustration to isn't there to list
Mulan's POVHis question was out of the blue. Well, the truth is, I'm mad at him.Extremely mad that I almost lost my head last night while thinking about his refusal to get a surgery. The money needed for the surgery had been settled, all that was needed was for him to give his consent and then the hospital in Germany would be contacted. "I was mad at you but not anymore.” I huffed, rolling my eyes to the back of my head. "The thing is…" He tried to explain but I didn't give him the chance, as I felt there was no point doing so. “I take your refusal as my inability to convince you on why you need to get off that wheelchair." I pouted. "Next time, I will make sure you have no choice but to give your consent. You just wait and see.” I smacked my lips as the sound of his soft laughter filtered into my ears. Smiling broadly, I said, "I'm being serious but first, let me get dinner ready.” "No, we should eat out.” He countered and before I could give my consent or refuse his sugges
Cross' POV Staring at her with my lips slightly parted, I felt my heart clench against my chest in full force. “Let's get your legs back." She said crouching next to me but I wheeled my chair away from her, grasping the tires as I began to hyperventilate. My reaction was not because I was mad at her or anything, it was solely borne out of shock. This was the first time someone had demonstrated this kind of care and attention to me despite having a family. When my family learnt I wouldn't be able to walk again, they resigned, claiming that it was my fate to be crippled while pledging to be by my side no matter what. Thanks to them, I lost interest in getting surgery coupled with my battle of topophobia. “We got into this agreement because of me." Mulan said, bringing me back to the present.“All thanks to you, my revenge plan on my family has been going on smoothly, why don't you want me to repay you back?" She said in a sing-song voice only to hear the echo of her sobs. Swirlin
Reader's POV Ethan quickly wired the money to Mulan after listening to Freya's tale. If Mulan carried out her threat of informing the prosecutors about her mother's stolen patent, the company was going to fold up. “I underestimated her." Freya's mom mumbled as she paced about the living room with her hands resting on her waist. "We just have to play by her rules until she uses up all her cards and then we will strike. “ Freya said, eliciting a nod from her mother who was also displeased. To clear her head, Freya decided to meet up with her finacé only to be faced with an embarrassment she never expected. Despite honking loudly to get the attention of the security personnel at the gate, she got no response. “I bet he is tired of handling his job. I will make sure Jason fires him the moment I get in." She spat out in fury, stepping out of her car. Since she knew the access code, she didn't find any trouble letting herself in and with her head raised, she strutted towards the ent
Mulan's POV Seated across from Freya in the restaurant, I had my straw in my mouth, taking sips at intervals from the juice which I held. Freya on the other hand was seething with anger. She probably had a lot of things to say to me; well, I had all the time in the world today to listen to her rant. When Kaiser informed me about the tip they sent to my family, I was disturbed at first. I wanted to deal with them in secret but after a careful thought, I felt it wasn't a bad idea after all. “Do you think you will be able to make progress?" She rolled her eyes in anger. Pressing her fingers down on the table, she said, “One of the people you trusted was the one who sold you out, what makes you think you will be able to take us down?" She spoke through her teeth. “I thought you called me here to plead with me." I mouthed with a shrug. “But it seems you came here to challenge me." Rolling her eyes, she tossed her head backwards as a low laughter rippled from her throat. “Oh please
Reader's POVIt had been two days since Mulan met with her family. Since then, they had been searching for alternative ways on how to get more shares before they lost hold of the company but all roads were blocked. Drumming her fingers against the table, Freya's mom said, “I wish we could just kill her and take over the shares." At that instant, Ethan swirled in her direction. “Don't even think about that." He hushed, his expression mournful while Freya on the other hand sulked. She had tried talking to some shareholders in giving up their shares but they were adamant, leaving them frustrated and angry. “The lawyer that came with her, isn't he Percy Rico from B&C Law Group?" Freya mouthed, twirling her hair around her fingers. “Yes, why?" Her parents asked in unison. They both had an expectant look on their faces as they stared back at her. Shrugging, she said, “I should go talk to him in person, who knows he will give out some information and then…” She filtered off. "I nee
Mulan's POVThe whole show down left me giddy with excitement that I couldn't hold myself back. With the way they had acted back there, if I had gone on my own, I would be forced to hand over the shares to them. Thanks to Kaiser's quick thinking then Percy’s presence else, everything would have backfired and I would be at the receiving end. All what Percy said were a few words but they were potent. Now I see why a lot of people hire B&C Law Group when it comes to corporate cases. “Thank you so much." I said, placing my hand together in appreciation. “I didn't do it for you; it's for Kaiser." His words made me roll my eyes as this was exactly the same thing Jax had said at the office just this morning. Anyway, I take their assistance as one of the benefits one gets from being associated with Kaiser.“Can you run a company?" Percy asked out of the blue, causing me to snap my head in his direction. My response to this was negative. Not only that, it reminded me of my father's word
Mulan's POV During lunch break as usual, I sat behind my computer searching for a temporary alternative for Kaiser's surgery. My focus was heightened until a phone call interrupted.Thinking it was Jax, I reached out of my phone only to see my father's number blaring on my screen. “Jax was right." I mumbled, tossing my phone inside the drawer. The next few minutes saw me struggling to concentrate as my phone wouldn't stop buzzing. In annoyance, I received his call. “Hey daughter, it's been a while." He said in a sing-song voice causing me to roll my eyes in anger.Grasping the table with my free hand, I snapped, "What do you want?” "I’m busy, be snappy about it.” I added, anger boiling through my veins. "What about dinner tonight?” He laughed. "I’m not hungry.” "It's just past noon, when it's time for dinner, you will be hungry.” When I didn't say a word of response to him, he said, "We will be waiting for you.” At the end of the call, I fell back on my chair, my chest risin
Reader's POV Pacing about her office with her hands resting on her waist, Freya had an unsettled look on her face. At intervals, she would rush to her computer but after scrolling and not finding what she was searching for, she would resume pacing about. “The chairman demands to see you." Tessy, her secretary said, breaking into her line of thoughts. Without hesitation, she hurriedly made her way out of her office and into the elevator with her phone placed against her ear. “Hey, have you found out the identity of the shareholder?” "Not yet.” The person on the other end replied, eliciting a scream of frustration from Freya. It was at this moment that the elevator door slid open and on seeing her reaction, the staff who were waiting to use the elevator quickly scurried off. Still fuming, she stormed out, "How much time do you need to find the shareholder?” She snapped, her hand stuck in her hair. "I can't give you a…" Too angry to listen to what he had to say
